She was surprised a moment, then laughed, despite everything. "You make him sound like a masochist. You might be right, though. He's a lot harder on himself than he is on other people. You probably just misconstrued- I doubt he's upset with you."

"I suppose." He wondered if she should tell her everything about what been said, but he hesitated. It might just make her uncomfortable for her to know something he'd learned about on accident.

"He hasn't been having it easy either. Apparently someone called Jamal crashed a jeep through his duplex."

She took a deep breath, then scooted off the edge of the bed to kneel next to Reuben. The mutt rolled over and whined, thumping his tail up against her leg. She was surprised the name didn't incite the same sort of panic that it had for so many months, or that veiled sense of anger and unfinished business. Maybe it was for the sense of time, or maybe it was just one of the many things she'd buried.

"I'm surprised I didn't notice. Our duplexes aren't... too far apart." She peered up through some spines that had fallen into her eyes. "You've heard of Jamal before. He was the one who attacked me in the woods. Well... not that time. The one before, that I'd told you about. The reason I was carrying the little knife around with me." She huffed a dry laugh, then went back to scratching the dog. "I wonder where that damn thing ever went." She'd not seen it since that morning of the Joliette attack when she had tucked it into her pocket as usual.

At first he didn't follow her. The only attack he could remember was Joli's. Had Emelyn really told him she had been attacked more than once? He was a little irritated that he'd forget something like that...but a lot had happened since.

"Jamal attacked you? I'm afraid I forgot that." His voice was apologetic. He adjusted Dasher off his lap and moved so he sat near the edge of the bed. "The name didn't sound familiar when I heard if from Ambrose. Now I'm doubly glad you aren't out there. Jamal isn't chipped anymore. The labs have no control over him and he's killing guards. After his attack on Ambrose, I guess it's not just guards he's after."

"...I think he's got more control about him, anyway. ...I saw him a while back- on the beach, there was a truth or dare party. He seemed lucid enough. Didn't talk to me at all. Guess I don't blame him." The dog wriggled happily beneath her gently scratching claws. "And it's okay," she said, referring to his having misplaced the memory of Jamal's attack, "I'm not really sure I told you, anyway." She smiled- a strange thing, and not wholly meant. "It was a looong time ago. You go through something, you move on." She looked up at him, her eyes sympathetic but brutally honest. "It gets less painful." She balked a moment, realizing that she had inadvertently linked what had been two very asimilar incidences. She didn't want Lucas to be offended, and think that she likened her attack to his loss of an eye- but regardless, she still meant what she said. Perhaps she wasn't thinking of the attack, anyway. The vision of a young girl, forever young, now- sitting on the end of a dock, waiting for her sister to return, buoyed up in her mind. Time did go on... and it did get less painful. Or maybe, a different kind of pain. One that had been boxed away- labeled, stored, and compartmentalized.

At first he wasn't sure what to make of Emelyn's behavior and reply. It didn't click in his mind at first that she was comparing their experiences. When it did, he wanted to argue. Tell her that they were nothing alike, but kept himself from blurting anything out immediately. "I don't know what it was like for you. Maybe they are somewhat alike, but I don't think so. I don't think this will get any easier." He was sure that her thoughts and memories of the event were not always at the front of her thoughts. Every time he opened his eyes, tried to blink, looked around the room, he was reminded of the eye he'd lost. The dull ache was always there, too. Only sleep allowed him a chance to forget.

"...I really don't know. Either way, I just don't know. But for your sake..." she was close enough, kneeling there on the floor next to the bed, to give his leg a sympathetic brush, "I hope we're more alike than you think."

The petting was making things awkward. He hadn't thought of Emelyn other than a close friend, but after what Ambrose had said...now the thought had entered his head. Could there be something between them? He was tempted to pull his leg away, but left it there and waited for her to take her hand back, not wanting to upset or offend. The touch was just an act of comforting between two friends, he told himself. It shouldn't feel awkward or make him embarrassed. Once again he pushed the thought from his mind. Emelyn was just a friend.

"Maybe...hopefully." But he didn't really feel it or think it.

He looked over at her, but at an angle so she couldn't see past his bangs. "I'm sorry. I'm really not good company. You were in a good mood just a moment ago."

"I think you're just fine company. And I'm in a perfectly decent mood," she said, in what she hoped was an assuaging tone.

He sighed. What could he do or say? Was she covering up her feelings to try to make him feel better? Did he want to risk actually lowering her mood?

For fear of saying anything, he looked at the dog at the corner of his eye, and sat quietly.

"So..." she said, trying to massage some life out of the silence. "Is there anything that you would like to do? A walk... a movie... we could try to teach the mutts some tricks." She smiled, a thing that said as much as her words 'I'm not going away'.

She really wasn't going to leave. His ear twitched.

There was still little desire to leave his duplex. "No...no movie." A movie meant going to the Entertainment room and that was one place he really did not want to visit. "I don't know... You choose."

"Come forth into the realm of men, my brothers. ...It's a quote," she explained, "Well... actually, I don't know if something can be a quote if you paraphrase it. Then it's a... mangle. Long story short... you choose. Anything you want to do, sir." She laughed. "Well, within reason."

The corner of his mouth curled into a smile. "It doesn't help if we're both indecisive."

He went quiet as he thought, the smile fading, then he sighed. "I really don't know. I just... I don't want to go out. I don't want anyone to see me like this right now." He brushed a few strands of his bangs back over his eye. "And I don't want to walk around with bandages over my head." That would attract more attention he did not want.

"Okay, one more question. Promise." She tapped the back of one hand's clawed fingernails against the other, making a swift, absent tack tack tack noise. "Are you putting up with this for my sake- and what you really want is to be left alone? Because I don't want to force you into anything you're not ready for- but I also don't want you to stay in here forever." It was soft and honest, and even a little rude... all together.
