As he struck the first boar in the face, he was hit from the sides and forced back a few inches by the remaining two. But that's okay. His healthbar was barely even touched, and he wasn't worried about anything that these little pests could throw at him. They circled around and prepared for the next charge as Alyx raised his glowing sword once more, taking aim at the already wounded boar, planning to take it out of the fight as quickly as possible. He hoped that the dungeon had more... Deadly enemies... He guessed. He didn't want to die, but he wanted some challenge in his combat, you know? Dagron's eyes lit up. A free bow, just for helping this person who does this so many times a day she is probably bored of it. Graciously accepting her offer, he sat and watched her hands work over the wood, handing it so expertly. He heeded to her beck and call, excited, almost like a puppy. The work didn't take long, and soon she was handing him the newly crafted ranged weapon. His thanks didn't feel like they were enough, but the wood resting in his palm felt right. Dagron slung the bow over his shoulder. His hands grasped and shook the woodworkers own violently, and with much enthusiasm turned into the settlement to look for more work. His eyes caught a very disgruntled looking woman standing next to the forge. Looks like he found his next opourtunity to help someone out.

Sitting in a corner booth at a small restaurant in town, Zyke opens a laptop after ordering a drink from his waitress. One of his old raiding buddies from a MMO he used to play had sent him a beta key for this new game that was supposed to rock the genre or something, he didn't know. All he knew is that after getting his highest level character killed in a perma-death game, after losing something he had dedicated so much spare time into developing for the end game content, all because some asshat had let a tank in the party without checking his credentials or knowledge of the fight, Zyke couldn't step virtual foot back into that game anytime soon.
The thought that this game was going to be all that it had seemingly been hyped up to be (he may have not been paying to much attention to the email sent to him...) didn't even cross his mind. Just maybe it'd be enough of a distraction to pass the time when he wasn't working in a shitty bar. Where was his drink?
Username: PocketChange Password: aredcarkilledthatman1001
Beta-Key: 86TSEO9
Server population was pretty damn low, although being a closed beta that should be expected. Maybe he should feel lucky that someone he used to know thought enough of him to give him a key.
Character creation screen. Well there is no knowing if this character is going to be transferable to the release of the game so there's no need to put too much into it. Average height, average weight, Exotic hair color, because why the ******** not? This is an RPG, if I can't have white hair and be normal why play at all?
He tanked in his last game, tried to give the damn noob advice to hold the boss and not die, but the b*****d thought he was all that since someone carried him into all his gear and level. ******** the entire Guild lost their best toons for that kind of error! OK, so maybe he was slightly more salty about it then he'd admit... Like five years of grinding, gearing, studying to lose because soldier B couldn't taunt.
Ok DPS seemed fun to try this time around. Now that everything was set it was time to log in. Here we go tedious fetch quests and slow escort quests! Here we go ALICE Online!

Approaching the Weaponsmith, Dagron greeted her and listened to her dialouge. "Of course I'll take you up on that offer!" He reached over and grabbed one of her hammers, hefted it up and raised it triumphantly. She showed him how to work the metal, shape the blade and fix the handle. He sat at the griding wheel and pushed the pedal as he finished forming the edge of the blade. Flipping it around, he handed it back to the Weaponsmith, beaming with his acomplisment. "Well, what else do you have for me?"

His healthbar was still full, but it's not like he enjoyed being touched by these things. They were kind of disgusting, despite the fact that they were simulated and a very, very small part of his mind knew that they weren't actually smelly and disease-ridden. So it was kind of his pleasure to kill them, in the end. Every one he removed from the game was one less affront to his senses, and he was glad to be rid of it. His VR headset kicked into gear, A white grid room assembled around him as the game software loaded itself. His Hardware was a little old, OK almost ancient as far as VR systems go, but it had been with him ever since the first model came out with World of Warcraft 3, Murlocs of the Tide. It had history, personality, not to mention his favorite wolf stickers for extra luck on those loot rolls.
Using the "Classic" system for choosing his character to log in as, he readied himself for the process of having his senses and nerves connected to the completely digital world inside his computer.
Pinewood and Moss. Those were the first senses to hit him as he entered the world. At least the smells that is. He could hear people shuffling around him and the sounds of wildlife or nature in general outside of his immediate surrounding. He finally opened his eyes to observe this world he warped in to. Holy ******** s**t, these graphics are ******** amazing! Seriously it's almost like he was looking at medieval Washington state or something! This is beta graphics? Programmers don't have s**t to worry about in this regard.
Zyke, or Kiyoshi as he named this character, examines himself. A slightly exaggerated samurai appearance. Randomly chosen starting gear that matches this theme was all he had on him. Inside his small messenger bag that served as his inventory and extensions of his menu, there was not but a single Healing Potion, A Journal to track his Quests, available Quests nearby, Maps, and Options. No way to turn down the ambient noise in the area? Bullshit.
Oh well, He could see the player list in this level, and it was not terribly large. I guess logging on at six in the morning probably meant that many people weren't playing, no matter time zone differences. Young bastards probably had school to worry about. Hah! Searching the meager list, found the character name Arin had told him that Kiyoshi could find them on. Alyx. Easy enough to remember.
Pulling out a quill Kiyoshi writes a personal message, folding it in half and holding it aloft for it to vanish in a quick flash of pinkish/purple feathers. "Hey, finally decided to try this games you've been bugging me about for weeks. What's up? Care to give me a tutorial or something, or do you just want me to fend for myself in this untested perma-death game like usual?"

Dagron hefted his new pick axe and waved at the Weaponsmith and stepped to the edge of the settlement. Staring out into the dense forest, and a world of dangers in front of him. He tred carefully along the path, taking in everything through the filtered light. He swore he could see a boar or two along his path towards the caves the weaponsmith pointed him towards. He had heard this place was crawling with wildlife, but the part that worried him the most, more than spiders, was the bears. What he wouldn't do to avoid running into one of them in the dark forest. Through the trees he could see the outcropping of the cave and aproached it slowly. Looking clear he found what looked like what he though would be a coal vein. Really what did he know, it's not like he knew what he was doing. Gripping his pickaxe tightly, he made his first swing at the rock and watched it bounce back. Looks like he's got a long process to go through for five pieces of coal.

What was even the whole purpose of this? He understood but this was a whole game, but the story is really lack luster. Sure it's a really pretty game, and the dive system was super in depth. It must have just been a part of the beta, but a huge part of the beta is all about glitches and game mechanics working out, so whats wrong with abiding some silly fetch quests to get to some of the more in depth parts of this whole adventure. God forbid he try the combat in this game quite yet. Permadeath isn't a joke, especially on your first character. Rouge-likes are one thing, but MMOs cant just been thrown around and tossed aside. Dagron did complete two quests, not that big of a loss but who wants to sit through character creation all over again? Not him, not on his first day at least.

So he wasn't entirely out of luck in his endless quest for success. He would just have to make sure that he was dangerously overpowered for the floor that he was on. Who was he kidding? This character was probably dead the moment he decided to try and use that bow! The low server population was probably the first nail in the coffin for that idea, and him carrying that bow probaby put the next row in. If he had any hope for playing this hardcore mmo, he'd have to at least make an attempt to find a guild, or even a friend at this point. For that to happen Dagron would probably have to find his place in this game beyond that of an archer. Maybe healing, however that mechanic works in this blasted game.

Throwing more stone into his inventory, he wondered the merit of the material anyways. Masonry wouldn't be a bad idea, but no practical use if he didn't have a group. It's not like there's enough of a player base for him to find a market for some lazy player with too much money who needed to blast their masonry skill through the roof. Maybe he could work a barter with another beta tester. There cant be too many people out there wasting time on mining like him, granted this is a quest in the first zone so there's no doubt that this idea may have crossed someone elses mind.

Back to that point, what was the validity of the non combat skills anyways? Was Dagron just wasting his time, even contemplating the idea of just sitting here and filling his inventory with materials he may or may not have needed? Like this quartz, yes it's different from stone, but how? Heaving the pick again, how impractical could Dagron even make this character. Were half of these quests even a necessity to the basic adventurer? Mumbling to himself about fetch quests, he continued his solitary actions of pummeling the rocks in front of him into dust or smaller stones.

Advancement in the quest! This coal must be pretty valuable if this much time has passed and he finaly recieved a single piece of this black gold. Grinding and economy, when this game launches is there any possible way to corner the market on this? That would definately require working with other players, which would mean sharing profits, and surely there are more valuable ores and materials later down the road. Is a quarry or mine a viable way to play this MMO? Did the developers actually intend for someone to spend hours upon hours of this game seriously grinding away at the rock in the starting zone to corner the market of crafting materials for players who have no interest in crafting at all?

Briliant, if he could manage to push and out level the noobs on launch day. Cornering this market could be a sinch, as long as he found a way to prevent players from acessing this cave. Probable idea for masonry, maybe. Build a giant wall in front of this cave and charge for acess, and attempt to hostily corner the first floors materials market. He could even charge for people to enter the cave at that point, to clean up the remaining money that was floating around. Pausing from the manual labor for just a second, he would have no choice but to find a guild, or form one. If he gained levels just as fast from noncombatant abilities, he could even have an intimidation factor to hold against the fresh players. Who would try and mess with a level hundered player in a starting zone? Granted later in the game he would have to watch his back, but this could actually work out to his favor.
