Elli stared down at the baby in the crib before her. For one she was relieved that the child was finally asleep. The young girl felt like she hadn't had any rest in what felt like forever. In all honesty it was more like a couple days. That's how long it'd been since he was born. His name was Kory Branon Rowley and he was hers, but she still, even now, didn't know how to feel about it. She smoothed her hands over her face and leaned back to stare up at the ceiling. She knew it the moment she found out she was pregnant. She wasn't ready to be a mother. She wasn't sure if she ever would be. Even so she'd kept the child because Cam wanted it and she'd always known he wanted a kid sometime. She couldn't bring herself to break his heart by having an abortion. Yet here she was, alone with the baby, because Cam was busy with his job. The job she had always wanted. Her dream job, just sitting there and now she wasn't sure if she'd ever make it to now. She covered her mouth, fighting back a sob and backed away from the crib to drop into a rocking chair near by, burying her face in her hands as she landed.
"Elli?"The quiet voice barely even registered in her ears, but then a soft hand was resting on her shoulder and she was lifting her face. Eyes met identical eyes and a small smile lifted the former Gryffindor's lips for a brief second before they dropped back down into a frown.
"I don't think I can do this Ver...." She whispered, running a hand through her messy, and rather greasy pony tail. The usually immaculate, perfectly done up woman, seemed to have lost her entire appeal. "I just... I haven't slept, and I feel like my life has just been put on stop for them. I know its my own damn fault for putting myself into this situation, but I thought.... I dunno what I thought. I just feel so alone."
Ver shook her head and knelt down in front of her sister with a kind smile. "El, Kory was only born a few days ago, of course its tough right now. But its gonna get better, and you're not alone. I'm here and dad's here and Cam.... sometimes. I know you love your son Elli, and I promise it's gonna get better and easier." Slowly, she pulled her sister to her feet and pushed her out of the room. "You go sleep, if he wakes I'll take care of him."
"Thanks Ver...."

Verily sat on her stairs staring up at the floor above her where she could hear Kory sobbing his heart out with Elli attempting to calm the poor child down. She rubbed her temples but just when she thought she was going to scream, the crying quieted down and she breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed to her the world was out to be against Elli. First she failed her OWLs, ruining her dreams of being an auror, then she got pregnant, runing her dreams of being recruited right out of Hogwarts for a professional Quidditch team, and now the most impatient girl in the world had a colicky baby.
There was some good news in her life though. Besides Kory and Elli being perfectly healthy (besides the crying), Ver had told her father she was dating Kenneth only a couple days after it became official and he'd taken it pretty well, although he'd insisted he meet him sooner or later. She'd promised he would, but today would not be that day. Her father was out with the rest of the governors doing God knows what, and this wasn't technically really a date. They were just cleaning house. Not very romantic. Just very much needed.
She smiled at the thought of Kenneth. She was always excited to see him, but since they'd started dating the excitement was ten-fold. Now that they were together, she didn't have to hide her feelings, and she could dress all cutesy without fear of him looking at her like he always did and her getting all flustered and annoyed. Because well... if they were dating, she was perfectly fine with him looking at her like that. Not that she looked cutesy today. Cleaning was not a cutesy affair.

spaceKenneth couldn't help the way his nerves were jumping around as he walked to the front door of Verily's house... or, her father's house, he thought, grimacing. He was happy to come over and help her clean the place, really he was, especially since they would have help, but... he hadn't met any of her family yet. Not even her twin sister, which he supposed was odd, since they'd been friends a lot longer than they'd been dating. But, somehow, Verily had until this point kept him entirely separate from her family. He had a feeling that wasn't going to last through the day. The American sighed, knocking on the front door, trying to smile a bit. He didn't want her to notice that he was, ever so slightly, freaking out. Her sister was probably here, with her newborn son. So Kenneth would, in all likelihood, have to meet Elli. That, he wasn't quite so worried about, although he disliked the idea that he might make a bad impression on his girlfriend's twin sister just because he happened to meet her at a bad time. No, he was more worried about her father... who was not supposed to be home, but he couldn't shake the feeling that the universe was going to fix that. Libby and Mitzy stood just behind him, peeking up at the house curiously. The pair were apparently quite happy to be out and about, and even more happy that they were going to be put to work. Sometimes, he swore, the pair of them managed to make him feel guilty for not living like a pig, which was completely insane. He couldn't help it if he were used to doing things himself. He glanced down at the pair.'Okay, y'all, soon as we get inside, Ver's the boss, got it?"he said. Libby responded with an eager nod and a small smile, one which he could tell she was trying desperately to contain. Mitzy, on the other hand, muttered a quiet, "Yes, Master Holt," and he had to suppress the sigh that rose. The creature acted like she were terrified of him, which made absolutely no sense, because he knew for a fact that no one in his family had ever given her cause to be afraid of them. He would never wrap his head around it... but he at least tried not to let her know how much it irritated him.

The knock on the door brought a grin to the red head's face and had her bouncing from her spot on the stairs and quite literally sprinting to the door. Just as she reached the door she heard a very snarky giggle behind her and then arms were reaching past her to pull the door open, practically shoving her out of the way to get there first. "Elli!" She growled, trying to shove her sister away before she made some horrible impression on Kenneth. Of course it was probably far too late for that.
"Hi! She never told me you were this cute! You've been holding out on me Verily!"
"I'm gonna go hang myself."Ver groaned, covering her face with her eyes. "I hate you so much Elli." Her twin grinned maniacally and hugged her sister tightly, making the healer cough and struggle for air.
"Oh don't lie! You love me! Now say that you love me or I'll hug you to death!"Ver grabbed at the other's arms, pulling herself free and glared at her sister.
"I love you, now will you leave us alone? Go play with your son of something!"'Thoughts'
"Aww! Do you want some one on one snogging time???"The look given to the new mother was one that could have killed her. Thankfully it seemed Elli knew better than to really push Ver. Honestly it was probably because Ver knew a lot more hexes than Elli did. At the look Elli was racing away and the former redhead was sighing in relief before finally turning her attention to Kenneth with a rather unperturbed smile for what had just transpired.
"Hey..."

spaceKenneth blinked oddly when the door was opened, expecting to see Verily and instead finding himself face to face with her sister. His girlfriend stood just behind Elli, looking absolutely mortified, which would've made him snort if not for the fact that he was, in fact, face to face with Verily's sister. Her words registered, and he flushed lightly."Uh, hi, nice to meetcha?"he said, the words getting lost in the pair's back and forth. He watched them with a mixture of confusion and amusement, blinking a bit when a single look from her sister sent Elli off. As soon as the other girl was gone, Kenneth relaxed somewhat, stepping forward and wrapping his arms around Verily's waist."Hey,"he said softly, leaning forward to kiss her lightly. The American gestured with a tilt of his head to the House-Elves, both of whom were still standing on the porch, looking somewhat uncomfortable."I brought reinforcements,"he joked."You'll have to invite them in formally, though. I think they learned their manners from muggle books about vampires,"he told her with a chuckle, feeling a bit bad for the quip when the pair's heads dropped somewhat. Dammit, neither of them had a sense of humor, and it was driving him completely nuts, because he kept hurting their feelings. Dammit, House-Elves were freaking weird.

Verily couldn't help the grin that slid onto her lips the moment his arms slid around her. No matter how embarrassing Elli was, she was pretty sure even she couldn't chase Kenneth off. Hell Ver hadn't accidentally chased him off yet, so she had a feeling no one could. After the soft kiss, she glanced back to where Elli was hovering at the top of the stairs, like a hunter waiting to pounced. Her eyes rolled, but she was still smiling. "At least she likes you..." The red head said with a shrug, before returning her attention to those in front of her. She smiled genuinely at the house elves he'd brought along before stepping back to let them all pass into the house completely. At his comment about having to invite them in, she blinked a couple times awkwardly.
"Uhhh would you like to come in?"She asked, flushing at how ridiculous she sounded. She did have enough focus to notice their heads drop slightly at his comment and she swatted at Kenneth with a mockingy disappointed frown. "Don't tease them you egg!" She said, sticking her tongue out at him, before her frown returned to its former grin and she was chuckling quietly at his expense.

spaceKenneth gave his girlfriend a nervous sort-of half smile, scratching the back of his head in confusion."I guess so? I mean... 'He's cute' doesn't really mean much. I would think she'd have a tougher screening process,"he said, somewhat bewildered. He'd think that Verily's crazy twin would have more to say to him than that, after all. Especially given her history... but then, Elli was sort of busy being a new mother, maybe her brain wasn't firing just right yet? Oh, that was a terrifying thought, mostly because it lent to the idea that later she might come flying down the stairs and start screaming at him, which honestly sounded more than a little scary. Of course, she was watching them now, so maybe she was taking the observant stance? It didn't sound like something he'd have expected from her, not the way Verily made her sound, but then, he didn't really know anything about Elli other than what her sister had told him, which was admittedly a pretty narrow view.
spaceHe frowned lightly as she scolded him for teasing the House-Elves."I don't do it on purpose! You know me well enough to know that I don't always think before I speak! An' that I'm about as sarcastic as I am Southern!"he told her exasperatedly. Still, at her invitation, the pair had entered the house, and were even now looking about with interest. He swore he could hear them making a list of everything to be done in their heads. The American stepped back from his girlfriend, eyeing the house."Alright, so it ain't half-bad just yet. But, how many rooms are we gonna find that look like sets from an old Vincent Price movie, huh?"he asked, eyes crinkling as he teased her. He had to wonder, though, if she'd even know what he meant. Did she know who Vincent Price was? She was pureblooded, purebloods didn't tend to know much about muggle pop culture, and British on top of that. Was he anyone of note in England? He honestly had no idea.

Elliryanna was looking more and more rundown as time had passed. It wasn't that she hated her son, or Cameron, or anything. She just wasn't happy. It was Cam who'd wanted her to keep the baby, and yet she felt like she was practically a single mom. She just felt so alone. She didn't know if it was Cam's fault or Kory's fault or her own. She just wasn't happy and she didn't know why anymore.
Elli had let her eyes slip closed for only a couple minutes, she swore it, and the next thing she knew, there was a crashing, shattering noise, and she was jolting off the couch and to her feet. She immediately raced to the entryway where the noise had come from, only to find her son sitting on the floor with a shatter vase around him. Elli groaned and leaned down to lift the crying toddler up and rest him on her hip. "It's okay Kory. Hush now sweet thing. You're okay. You didn't hurt anything. Hush.." She cooed softly, rocking him gently until he stopped crying. She smiled gently at the toddler and pressed a gentle kiss to his forehead. "See sweetheart, everything is perfectly okay."
At her smile the toddler grinned and clapped his hands together. "Happy mama!" He squealed. She chuckled softly, hefting him along her hip as she walked towards the kitchen. Since Dolly and Jupiter had gone with Grace, the house had become something of a mess. Elli had grown up for most of her life not having to lift a single finger, and now she was raising a child, cleaning house, and cooking, while also trying to find a job to support herself with. She had Cam's income of course... but something told her she needed to find something to support herself with. It was a little nagging thought in the back of her head.
"Mama is going to put you down now Kory, cuz mama needs to clean up the broken vase." Slowly and carefully she the child down, grabbed a dustpan and broom and began cleaning up the shattered ceramics. When she was done she crouched down in front of her son, who'd been sitting watching her since she put him down. "You wanna go to Diagon?" She asked, grinning at him. The toddler nodded excitedly and stood up on unsteady feet. "Die-gun! Die-gun!" She grinned and took his hand in hers, apparating away with him.

There’s 7 billion 46 million people on the planet And most of us have the audacity to think we matter The reason there’s smog in Los Angeles is ‘cause if we could see the stars If we could see the context of the universe in which we exist And we could see how small each one of us is Against the vastness of what we don’t know No one would ever audition for a McDonalds commercial again
Aimee was not quite excited about this party. She wasn't even sure all the invited people even liked her. She doubted anyone but Caty would show up.... but that was okay, at least she'd be able to spend the day with her best friend. She jumped as the house elves cracked into appearance behind her, carrying the last of the trays of food from her cousin's place. It was about 10AM at the moment so Gracie wouldn't be able to make any actual appearances unless the party went late into the night, which knowing Caty it would. Honestly Aimee wouldn't be surprised if Caty somehow convinced Michael to let them all stay the night.
The food trays were laid out on the dining room table. They were covered with every kind of food you could imagine, and looked beautiful. Her da hadn't been kidding when he'd said Grace was an amazing chef. Aimee plopped her butt on the stairs and watched the front door anxiously. She couldn't wait for at least someone to arrive. Michael still wasn't convinced she had actually made friends, and so she both wanted to prove to him that she did, and prove to herself that she did. Caty kept telling her, they all liked her, and maybe she was right. Maybe Aimee was just being silly by thinking they didn't like her.
"Miss Amelia, Miss Gracie gave us strict instructions to make sure all the children were happy and fed. You won't mind us sticking around will you?" Aimee blinked at the creature for a few long moments. She wasn't used to having servants.... especially not ones of a different race. She barely knew her cousin's two house elves but they acted like she was their master which was weird.... She shrugged and nodded. "You guys can hang out with us. I don't mind. And please call me Aimee."

ﻬஐCaty had gotten up early to ensure that she had everything perfect by the time it was ready to go to her friend's party. She knew that Aimee was probably going to have buckets of food already but she had promised some sort of sweets to bring and she always kept her promises. So with a bit of help from her Da she kept it simple and just made ladybug cupcakes; she had seen them on pintrest one day and had practically squealed herself hoarse and luckily had printed out the recipe for another day. Real lucky since the manor was so saturated in magic she was afraid their old computer would just burst into flames had they tried to make it work. Technically ladybugs and flowers were more for spring type parties but she liked working with fondant and she didn't think just putting a sun and some rain puddles were very fun for cupcakes. Still, she broke up the monotony by have some with the ladybugs, some with just flowers, and some that were polka-dotted. It was fun, messy, and just what she needed to keep her head out of the cloudy haze she sometimes found herself in. The other day she had felt so heavy, like she couldn't lift her head from her own pillow without feeling more tired than she had before she went to bed the night before. So she had just sat on her bed for hours until her Da had come in asking if she were sick or not. She couldn't really answer him, it had seemed like just speaking required a form of effort she didn't have so he had tucked her bag in with the promise of cold medication. They had waved it away as a twenty-four hour bug when she was up and rowdy the day after but it still stuck with her for some reason. But today wasn't about that! Caty grinned as her dad apparated her about a block away from her friends home and after double checking the address she was sure she knew exactly which house it was. After giving him a quick goodbye hug and peck she ran up to the door and knocked excitedly with her take-away box of cupcakes wrapped neatly in her hands. A house elf answered the door and she immediately spotted Aimee sitting right on the stairs and beamed at her while taking in her appearance. She thought her friend looked amazing if a bit jealous by how her clothing made her look filled out since she sometimes swore she still looked like a nine year old boy. "Hey Aimee! You look grand by the way. Before I forget, I brought cupcakes! I know you probably have a mess of different foods but I did say I would bring some." she told her with a short giggle. ஐﻬ

Diantha and Isolde stared at the house from just outside the front gates, the young woman's hand still in the preteen's shoulder from the side along side apparation that had just occurred.
"Are you sure this is the right address, Ann?" Isolde asked after a moment, her tone one of slight disbelief.
"Yes," said Di frankly. "She didn't tell me she was well off."
"Hm," said Isolde in a 'I want to say more but am refraining' sort of way, and then, "It looks a bit like the main estate, doesn't it?"
"Yes," said Di again with a small nod. This sort of sprawling architecture was very reminiscent of the home her paternal grandparents and eldest uncle and his family resided at. Very old. Very pureblood.
"They've got their crest on everything; twin serpents, isn't that lovely," Isolde murmured, more to herself than Di, and patted her shoulder a bit. "Should I walk you up, or can you take it from here?"
"I'll be fine, I think," Di replied more brightly than she felt, and smoothed her sundress a bit. She hated it. She'd rather have come in a tee shirt and shorts, but Tad and Isolde wouldn't hear of it. They'd made her wear a dress and bring a 'hostess gift', and she supposed she was lucky Isolde wasn't insisting on walking her to the door.
"Alright. Have fun, be good, and don't forget to thank her and her parents. Your da will come get you later."
Di nodded and adjusted the satchel over her shoulder before passing through the rather imposing gates and walking briskly up to the house. She wasn't intimidated, not exactly, but as happy as she had been to be invited, she wasn't exactly comfortable, either. She and Aimee were friendly enough, she supposed, but she really knew Caty better than the other Slytherin girl, and she was a little worried the party would be full of people from their year she barely knew. She was prepared to grin and bear it in a corner if she had to, but...
She knocked, and a house elf answered, and she blinked a little, before realizing of course, they'd have house elves, they were pureblooded and rich. Probably more house elves than Taid and Nain, because the Warlows were land wealthy and money poor, though Tad insisted their fortunes were doing a bit better because Uncle Roddy made a fair bit as a cursebreaker- anyways.
"Thank you," she told the house elf quite seriously, because Isolde had drilled it into her, and because it was the decent thing to do, and stepped into what had to be the foyer. Aimee was there, and Caty was excitedly chatting and giggling with her, and Di felt terribly awkward suddenly, knowing they were best friends. She didn't want to interrupt or come off as obnoxious; Treva said she was obnoxious, but then again Treva was eight and had only recently learned what the word meant.
"Hi Aimee, hi Caty," she said after a moment, taking a slight step forward. They were both dressed fairly casually; ugh, she had known wearing a sundress was going to be ridiculous. "Thank you for inviting me," she addressed the dark haired girl, and them fumbled with her satchel before pulling something out in a small jar. She held it out with what she hoped was a friendly smile, but felt as thought it might have come off more like a look of distress. "I made you a candle, um- It's lilac scented," she added, and then bit her lip a bit. "Sorry if you don't like that scent."

The invitation had come as a surprise to Chessie, who had honestly been loving the summer so far. Normalcy had returned, and every moment spent giggling with Journey and playing fetch with Frodo was pure gold. Sure, school had taught her a lot and she enjoyed using magic and going to quidditch games and such. But Chess had felt a little bit sidelined during her time at Hogwarts so far. People interacted with her on occasion, but if the First Year Class was a book, she would have been a supporting character rather than a main one. She’d heard her friends gossiping about this exciting thing and that, while her most fabulous moment was when she made second reserve seeker. Big whoop. Even so, she harbored zero resentment and was glad for the opportunity to visit her classmates and catch up.
Dressed in her cutest floral sundress, she marveled at the mass of the homestead as her father drove toward it. Used to sharing a room with Journey in her little row house in Brighton, she wondered how anyone could even tolerate so much space. What did they do with it? Just let it sit there emptily? In Chessie’s opinion, it was just downright unnecessary. But some people liked that sort of thing, and they were entitled to their own decisions. The girl thanked her father and pecked him on the cheek before making her way to the grand entrance, where a peculiar looking creature answered the door. She had never encountered one before, and having returned to her muggle family was re-accustomed to ordinary things. Before making a fool of herself, she reminded herself of the necessary open-mindedness that came with entering the Wizarding World and thanked the creature courteously.
At last, she found herself in the presence of several classmates she’d become acquainted with. Caty had become one of Chessie’s first friends when they’d ridden the train at the start of the year and then had a sort of solidarity as a result of both being on their respective houses’ quidditch teams. It was sort of melancholy that they’d ended up in different houses; Chess would have liked to spend more time with the outgoing and friendly girl. There was Diantha, who Chessie knew as Di, and hadn’t had much chance to become friendly with. They’s had a brief conversation at a quidditch game once, and were often in similar social circles, but hadn’t bonded much. And lastly there was the host, Aimee, who seemed to get along splendidly with Caty. Chessie had met her at the platform in Hogsmead when Caty had shouted her name quite enthusiastically.
The young Gryffindor put on a brave face and began the exhaustive task of attempting to be social. "Hi Aimee, Di, Caty. How’re all your summers going?"

spaceColin had been very, very excited to get an invitation to Aimee's party. He'd also been sort of surprised, since he hadn't really been entirely certain that she actually liked him. Aimee was quiet, like he was in his more introverted moments, and he always had a hard time reading her. That didn't mean he didn't like her, obviously, he just was never sure if the feeling was mutual. His mother, upon seeing the rather impressive home, had insisted on escorting Colin to the front door. As a result, the woman was rather shocked to see the House-Elf who opened the door, blinking at the odd little creature a moment. Colin frowned, thinking it was rude, and poked her in the ribs. She stuttered an apology, then told her son she loved him, kissed the top of his head, and was off."I'm really sorry about her, magic stuff is new for her. She's never seen a House-Elf before,"he explained sheepishly, following the elf inside.
spaceHe was lead to a small collection of his classmates, all girls, and wondered if he was the first boy to arrive. He wouldn't be the only boy invited, right? That'd be a bit weird. Unless he was the only boy Aimee considered her friend, but that didn't seem right, considering he hadn't even known she considered him a friend to begin with. Still, that didn't stop him from grinning at the girls, approaching with an enthusiastic wave."Hey, everyone!"he said happily, joining them. He was surprised to see Di here, he hadn't known she was friends with Aimee. But, he was happy to see her, since he liked her being around. Chessie and Caty, too, obviously, so he was glad to see all of them. And glad that he knew everyone who was here, too."How are you guys? Have your Summers been nice?"Wide eyes gazed around the rather impressive interior of the home."Your house is huuuuuge, Aimee, you should've seen my Mum's face when she saw it. I think our whole house could fit in the front yard!"He blushed then, wondering if now he was the one being rude."It's really nice,"he tacked on, hoping he hadn't made her uncomfortable or insulted her home somehow. He'd just called it big, after all, that didn't seem like an insult. But you never knew what someone was going to be weirdly sensitive about.

The summer rolled in like it owned the place not a moment too late or too soon. It hadn't hesitated in the slightest with how ferocious it would be this year. Ralph felt sweat trickle down his back and he grimaced.
Hogwarts had pretty much come and gone for Ralph, not waiting to kiss him goodbye on the cheek before throwing him unceremoniously back onto the train that had dumped the first year at the castle's feet all those months ago. Ralph felt cheated in some way, as if he had been playing a game without knowing all the rules because no one had told him them. The boy felt lost, floating through space with no hope of ever coming back to Earth.
Then a shudder of wings pulled him from his stupor. He was hunched over on the sidewalk and was pressing his fingers into ants as they marched on. They were searching for water, Ralph deduced, as they swerved away from the bag of chips he was enjoying that now lay on the ground at their level. But when the sound of air rushing over millions of feathers brushed his ears, Ralph knew that something was coming.
A shadow passed over him, cooling him for an instant. He wished it would stay in that spot for a little while longer. The heat was starting to drive the poor boy mad.
No sooner had it passed over Ralph's head that a letter landed with a plop onto the Slytherin's lap. He rolled his eyes, but secretly couldn't contain his excitement. Someone had written him? Him? ... It was for him, right? Ralph lifted the note skeptically, examining it with his cinnamon-colored eyes.
The envelope it was secured in was the most refreshing shade of green Ralph had ever laid eyes on. It was dark, like it had come straight of the Amazon rainforest, or some other rather lush, deep green place. The front was scribbled on with some wonderful silver ink, each letter masterfully and impeccably denoted with every stroke. It simply read, "Mr. Ralph Thomas Hastings" and, despite it's length, Ralph was impressed that, whoever had wrote it, had done so with the utmost care. Flipping the envelope over to its back, the Slytherin gasped. There, in a bright red seal, was an insignia that Ralph recognized.
He rolled his eyes once more, "Oh gee, what does she want?" Ralph was, of course, referring to Aimee McHalen. She and her best friend, Caty, were always grating on Ralph and Raymond's nerves. The girls were inseparable as well as insufferable. Ralph wouldn't have minded them so much if they weren't always talking about nonsense; the prattled on and on about some of the most mundane things!
In fact, the more Ralph thought about it, the less enthused he was about the whole affair. Especially since he wondered if Raymond was even invited. The girls never really took notice of him, the Slytherin was pretty much to himself most times. The only reason Ralph even met him was because of their mutual interest in Transfiguration. And, well, those girls didn't seem to focus much on their studies.
Ralph slipped a finger under the lip of the envelope and skimmed the note. It had a lot of formal language sprinkled throughout the letter but Ralph understood the gist of it: summer house party.
If only I was older, Ralph thought darkly, then I could just set this stupid letter on fire or something. He put the note down and stared across the street. Muggle cars zoomed past without even noticing him. They puttered along dangerously, threatening to give up whenever a muggle stepped on the gas unexpectedly. Brooms were much better, Ralph had announced one day to Effy. She had laughed and agreed with him.
The Slytherin boy stood and went inside the house to show the letter to Effy. If she thought he should go, then he would. Otherwise, he'd ask Tristan to set the thing on fire. He'd do it in a heartbeat, anyway.
The McHalen Manor gave Ralph the willies. It was old, and Tristan had filled Ralph's head with all sorts of stories and legends surrounding that unfortunate house. It made him shake at night, thinking that he was essentially walking into a murder house. He would get nightmares that Aimee and Caty were just pulling his leg and sent him an invitation just to make fun of him or to do whatever it was that girls did that gave them a good rush. Ralph didn't know. And it freaked him out more.
Effy had insisted he go: "It'll be good for you to meet some of your housemates outside of school, Ralphy!"
In fact, Ralph was certain that Savannah was more excited about this arrangement than he was. When the day came for the party, it was Effy who dressed him, telling him what to wear and what not to wear, what to say and what to avoid. She was coaching him on how to be a proper Slytherin and, when the training was over, she took a step back and looked him over.
"There, now you look like a proper, young gentleman," she beamed.
Now, as he stood in front of the McHalen Manor, with a gift in one hand and his broom in the other, Ralph gulped audibly and searched around for a way out. The lawn of the Manor was well trimmed and vibrant, and all manner of plants seemed to thrive in the dirt here. Ralph thought he might have seen a garden gnome hobbling through the petunias on the west side, but he blinked and it was gone.
With as much courage as he could muster, Ralph rapped on the giant manor door. The knock echoed inside, sounding more like a cave than a home. It made Ralph's courage falter for a flutter of a moment and he felt his legs shaking. He could run now if he wanted to. A general unease settled in his stomach and he glanced over his shoulder constantly due to it.
He jumped as the door creaked open and a rather shriveled creature answered the door. Ralph stared at it with wide eyes, but realized that Effy had warned him of this, too. This must be a house elf, Ralph deduced, his eyes looking over the elf with curiosity now. This was the first time he had ever seen one, since his family never really believed they needed a house elf themselves. Effy had guaranteed Ralph that he would see a large manner of house elves before the day was done.
"Hello, Master Hastings," the elf bowed so low to the ground, Ralph thought he was going to kiss it. The Slytherin didn't know what to say or do, as this pointed-earred creature showed him respect and reverence. The only thing it wore was a nasty, heavily-stained towel, with a hole in the exact middle to fit its mishapen head through. The towel was ragged and trailed the floor, dirtying the ends with all manner of unmentionables, and it was cinched up by a fraying rope around the creature's waist.
Ralph wanted to cry and help the thing, but Effy had told him no. It was someone else's property, essentially. Ralph had no right to do anything with these things; they weren't his to do anything with. "But they sound like slaves!" the poor naive boy had argued, unable to wrap his young mind around the injustice. Effy only shrugged and said, "Just don't do anything with them, okay?"
The creature didn't seem to notice or, if it did, it didn't make it known. It straightened and stepped aside so Ralph could enter, "Please, come inside. The young mistress has been waiting for you. May Jupiter take your broom, young master?" The house elf put both his hands together and looked up at Ralph with the shiniest, wide eyes that he'd ever seen. It broke his heart more.
"Oh, um, alright," Ralph handed the broom to the little thing and watched as it scurried off behind a door (which Ralph assumed was the broom closet). It returned broom-less, and his suspicions were verified. "Thank you," the boy said as the elf returned.
The thing looked up at the boy and lowered its ears, "If there is anything else you need, please allow Jupiter to humbly serve you," Jupiter bowed once more, sweeping the entire floor with his nose. He had no hair on his head except for a small patch on the very top. He straightened and motioned for Ralph to follow, "The young lady is this way, Master Ralph,"
When Ralph entered, he first searched for his friend, Ray. The black-haired snake was no where to be found. Ralph tried very hard to hide his disappointment, especially as his eyes landed on Aimee. Not far behind her was Caty. No surprise, Ralph mentally joked as he approached the girls.
He held out the gift to Aimee and blushed a little, "Here. This is a gift from my family to you." It was wrapped very well, with beautiful emerald green wrapping paper covered in little red fox pups playing with each other. The ribbon it was held together by was the color of ivory, matching the white tuffs of fur that the foxes showed on their paws and bellies. A tag stuck from it that read, "To Aimee McHalen, From the Hastings."
Ralph's stomach grumbled and his eyes were already undressing some of the foods that were lined up atop a table. It stretched down the room and reminded the boy of when he was at Hogwarts. It had the same large selection of foods ranging from sweets to savories. Ralph wondered how it was that witches and wizards were able to stay so thin with how much delicious food they consumed regularly.
His eyes returned to Aimee. It was strange seeing her outside of her house robes and in normal attire. She wore a floral skirt and a bright pink top, and reminded Ralph of bubblegum. It was clear she had money because all her clothes looked new and not handed down, like Ralph's was.
It wasn't that the Hastings were poor, by any stretch of the word, but Ralph's parents liked to live frugally. Why buy new clothes for Ralph when Tristan's old clothes will do the trick? Sure, Ralph wasn't nearly as large as Tristan he was at the same age, but that's fine. He could just grow into his clothes.
Today, however, he wore his own clothing. It fit him well and didn't get baggy in the wrong places. It was a button-up shirt, the color of clouds, and was very breathable. He wore some nice slacks, too, with the shirt tucked into the waist. Ralph felt like he was marching along in a penguin suit, but Effy had insisted that this was the way to go for a family as prestigious and renowned as the McHalen's. What she probably didn't mention to Ralph was that he looked smart. Not book smart, but stylish, on-point, and, yes, even a little handsome for being so young.
She didn't mention it, most likely, because Ralph would have objected to the whole affair of things if she had. Him? More attractive to those girls? Ralph would have stomped out of the country in a heartbeat.

This is the story of a girl who cried a river and drowned the whole world. And while she looked so sad in photographs, I absolutely love her when she smiles.
Kiley and Kimberly arrived at the McHalen house. They waved goodbye to their mother as she pulled away, then turned to face the house and fully take it in. It was huge! Much bigger than their cottage. It wasn't really a house, either. It was clearly a manor or a small mansion. Maybe even a big mansion. They hadn't ever seen a mansion before, so they couldn't really judge one on size if they didn't know the average size of one.
"Come on, let's hurry inside. We're already late," Kiley said, heading towards what appeared to be the front door. Kimberly walked alongside her. "We're not late. We're fashionably late. There's a difference," she replied. Kiley snorted in response. "We're still late, by definition. Were we supposed to bring anything?""I don't think so? It's not a birthday party, it's just a house party, and by the size of this mansion, I'd say she has enough house elves to cover the food part of the party."
Kiley, now at the front door, knocked as loud as she could. It was a big door, and they were fairly small, so she needed to use as much force as possible. Surely enough, a house elf answered the door. The twins smiled and waved awkwardly at the creature that ushered them inside before they headed over to their friends. Aimee was there, of course since it was her house and all, along with Caty, Diantha, Chelsea, Colin and Ralph. Kiley knew Colin and Diantha, since they were both in her house, and Kimberly had become friends with Chelsea, while she knew of Caty as well. They both knew Ralph from class though, so they wouldn't be faced with any awkward first introductions. "Hey guys! Aimee, your house is so big and so pretty!" Kim said with a starry look in her eye. "Yeah, thanks for inviting us, Aimee," Kiley added, standing a bit behind her sister. Kimberly had always been better at talking to people than her. In situations like this, she tended to stay back and let her sister do the socializing.
