User ImageSkylar didn’t know what to do after what she said. Was she waiting for Jack to respond? No, it would be best not to get into a conversation with him right now. It would just make everyone upset. Shaking her head, Skylar was just all the more positive that her coming here was a bad idea. If she had stayed away then she wouldn’t be causing others pain. Sure, she would be alone with the pain she was feeling but that almost seemed like it was the best thing.

As she stood in the hallway, Skylar heard Alice come in and start talking to Adam about her. It was clear to her that Alice knew what had happened. They had probably talked about it in the car. Images of Jack holding Bella’s hand and then professing his love to her for everyone in the car to hear. She shook that thought from her head. Why was she doing this to herself? It was just making everything harder to take in.

Looking up she saw Adam make his way towards her. She really didn’t want to talk to him. She wanted to just leave this cabin and go home. Of course, there was nowhere for her to run. Adam was blocking her only exit. She had no choice but to talk to him. She just hoped that he wasn’t going to try and defend Jack. That wasn’t something that she could handle at the moment.

Hearing was came out of Adam’s mouth should have made her relax a little. Everything he was saying was nice and comforting. However, Skylar didn’t feel any of that comfort. Instead, she heard one of the lines he had said and it just repeated over and over in her head. I really respect that you put your feelings aside to be here for us. There were so much things that made her upset about that statement. One was that she didn’t need to be there. Adam had confirmed it. She had half the mind to just walk up to Cailen and demand his keys so she could get out of there. Another thing that bothered her was the ‘us’. It meant everyone else, something she wasn’t apart of originally. It was like that thought kept going through her head and getting confirmations every which way.

The biggest thing that bothered her, however, was the statement saying that she was so nice to put her feelings aside and be there for everyone else. She had not put her feelings aside. They were all there still floating around in her head. It wasn’t like she could just shoot them away to some island were they could still until she was ready to deal with them. If that were possible, Skylar would have done it hours ago. She didn’t mean to but because she couldn’t stop this statement playing over and over in her head she was starting to get really angry.

”I’m sick and tired of being the better person.” It was a bit strange. She had followed Adam out into the living room and he had already moved onto talking about dinner. What she said probably just came out as a weird comment. She looked over at the door and was tempted to just run out of it. Run into the forest and just run until she couldn’t anymore. Something kept her in place though. She didn’t know what but something wasn’t letting her move her feet.

Cailen was still standing in the kitchen as the whole Adam and Jack scene went on. It reminded him of the good old days when the three of them would goof around as young boys did. That was back in the simpler days when girls didn’t get in the way of their friendship. He had to admit it was funny to watch them mess around, and he wanted to be there too as lighthearted and relaxed as they were, but he was still angry. Adam wasn’t his favorite person to be around right now and it just seemed that everything about him ticked Cailen off. His goofy smile, his over confidence as he spoke to his sister like the way he did, everything just made him more aggravated at Adam. He kept quiet as they discussed who was going to room with whom. Adam asked Jack, which he was happy about because there was no way that he was rooming with Adam. Then he heard Alice ask Skylar. He figured that was probably the best idea since Cailen did not want to room with Alice, though he wouldn’t mind rooming with Skylar. In the end though, rooming with Bella he liked best. It was just that much closer he could be to her in case anything happened in the middle of the night. He was not going to let her be taken away again.

He saw Alice take Bella back out to the porch for a talk. Wondering what it was about, he knew it was a serious matter. Are they talking about me? He watched them sit and talk out there until he was distracted by Jack getting up from the couch and went over to Skylar. Dwelling in his own thoughts and anger, Cailen hadn’t been really paying much attention to Skylar. He hadn’t left her, he only a few paces away from where she was standing. Even though he was only that short distance away, he felt horrible for leaving her there all by herself. He saw the pain on her face as Jack reached out for her arm. Maybe if he stood by her, the Jack wouldn’t have bothered to approach her. It’ll be ok, don’t worry. He tried to give her a reassuring smile, hoping that she was able to catch it before Jack took her off. He didn’t want to eavesdrop, so he tried focusing his attention on Alice and Bella out on the porch. Then, his eyes followed Adam as he made his way into the kitchen and rummages through the refrigerator.

Cailen remained unmoving as he stood there and listened to Adam moving about the kitchen. He really did not want to be this close to Adam. Right now he wanted nothing to do with the man. Then to his surprise, Adam actually started talking to him. He reluctantly turned around and forced himself to look at Adam. He didn’t want to listen to Adam’s excuses; they didn’t mean anything to him right now. He only half listened to Adam at first, because Cailen was stubborn like that, but as he heard what Adam had to say, he put more attention into it. Sure he has a point, I wasn’t technically dating Alice at the time, but that sort of thing happened all the time. It wasn’t the first time that they decided to take a break in their relationship. He never thought of them as separated, just giving each other some distance. Hearing what happened from Adam’s point of view though, made Cailen a little more understanding, but it didn’t change anything.

As much as it hurt, Cailen didn’t want to accept that he was the one who drove Alice right into Adam’s arms. Maybe if he wasn’t so focused on his stupid gambling, he could have prevented it from happening. But if Adam cared about Cailen as much as he said he did, then why did he let it happen? Maybe if he brought it to Cailen’s attention, then he could have tried and done something. As much as he hated to admit so, Adam was true when he said he didn’t make any moves on Alice when they were together. Slowly, Cailen’s anger towards Adam was diminishing. He made good points that Cailen couldn’t argue against. It was almost touching to hear Adam apologize and say how much their friendship meant to him. Not to mention the smell of the chicken cooking was really getting to him. The best way to get to Cailen was with food. He was starving, not able to remember the last thing he ate.

Trying to ignore the intense growling coming from his stomach, he let Adam finish his speech. “You know man, I appreciate that,” Cailen responded to Adam saying he wouldn’t date Alice unless it was ok with him. It took a true friend to say that and it really meant a lot to him. He knew that he couldn’t keep them from dating though. That would be cruel to both Adam and Alice and he didn’t want to hurt them. If they were what made each other happy, then who was Cailen to keep them from it. That’s not saying that it wouldn’t kill him to see them together, but he hoped he would eventually get over it. “I’m not going to lie when I say that I am still angry with you. It will be sometime before I can forgive you, but I’m pretty sure that I will. Eventually.” After the years of friendship that Adam and Cailen had built, girl trouble like this wasn’t going to keep them apart forever. Adam was there for Cailen always bailing him out of his tight money situations. That thought brought him back to something Adam had said earlier about selling his body. What did he mean by that? He was about to ask when Alice came back into the cabin and said something to Adam.

Watching Adam walk away and leave Cailen alone with Alice, he decided to ask Adam about that later. His eyes were glued to the freshly cooked chicken for a moment. He wanted to take some since it smelled so good and he was starving, but he could sense Alice’s presence next to him. Tearing his eyes away from the tasty looking chicken, he turned to look at Alice. He knew what she was going to say before she even said it. Yes they had to talk, but Cailen wasn’t sure he was ready. “Yeah, I guess we should.” He knew that it was inevitable, so might as well get it done with now. “Do you wanna sit down or…?” Cailen couldn’t help but notice how hard it was to talk to Alice now. What seemed so easy to do before he was struggling with, not sure what to say. How did so much change in such a short amount of time?

Do you wanna sit down or…?

It was finally happening. The moment that she was trying to avoid for fear of how it was going to cause everything to turn out. Unfortunately, it was inevitable. Alice figured that it would be better if they had some privacy before actually starting the conversation, and led Cailen into the room that she planned on sharing with Skylar for the group's stay. "It's probably best if we talk in private."

Once they were alone, Alice felt her mind clutter up once again with ten million different things she wanted to say. Everything had all seemed so clear just moments before, and now everything felt like it was falling apart. She took a few deep breaths before making her way to the edge of the bed to sit down, trying to collect herself before she spoke.

"I suppose I should start by saying... I never meant to hurt you. I know it's cliche and stupid, but it's true. I try to imagine what you must be feeling... and I can't fathom it. To try just makes me sick to my stomach to think about what I've done." That was was most definitely true. Alice had been beating herself up about hurting him almost from the moment she admitted the truth, perhaps even prior to that as well. "At the hospital... I meant it, when I said I love you. Love. As in present tense. I still do. Maybe I always will. I don't want you to ever question that. I don't want you to ever think that there'll be a situation that I won't be there for you. I want you to be happy. I want to be able to see you smile again. More than anything I would love for things to work between you and I but..."

Alice rose from her seat and walked over towards the window, in an attempt to hide her face and the emotions that were painted all across it. She could feel herself beginning to cry once more, but used up all the energy that she had to keep herself from doing so. She attempted to finish her sentence, but for a few moments the words just did not seem to want to leave her lips. It was as if the second she spoke the words, that would be it. Everything would come crashing down. That wasn't what she wanted at all.

"I wish I was the one who could make you happy. But I think at this point, we both know that... I can't be that person anymore. It wouldn't be fair to you, with my attention split between you and...." Alice allowed her sentence to trail off, not wanting to speak Adam's name around Cailen, for fear that the entire conversation was like a sheet of thin ice that would shatter if Adam's name was spoken. "Maybe being apart would be good for us... you know? Maybe it will make us realize later on down the road that we're actually meant to be together." This time, Alice couldn't hold back the flood gates any longer. She could not think of a single thing in her entire life that was harder to do than this. She had spent her entire childhood fighting off a debilitating illness, and yet that was somehow easier to do than what she was currently attempting. "To say I don't love him...would be lying, and I both care about and respect you too much to do that anymore. But that doesn't make me feel anything less for you. I... I won't date him... if it would upset you. I'd do anything right now to make this easier for you; to make this hurt less for you. Anything." As much as Alice felt like everything she had ever known for sure; everything she had ever taken comfort in was coming crashing down with each word she spoke, she was sure that Cailen felt similar. Alice saw the look of complete ruin on Skylar's face and it wasn't something she would wish on her worst enemy, let alone her best friend and her boyfriend... well, soon to be ex-boyfriend.

"I love you, but sometimes relationships just don't work out. I wish that the gambling didn't bother me so much all these years. I wish we'd just talked about it more instead of arguing. I wish the trust on both sides of this hadn't been lost. Nothing excuses what I did, but... I wish circumstances were different. But I guess they're not..."

That was the final sentence that Alice found herself able to speak. She wanted to turn her head back to face Cailen to see how he felt about everything, to see if he was choking up about this like she was, but she couldn't bring herself to move from where she stood, not wanting to be seen in such a raw state. All she had to do now, was wait and see what Cailen would say back. ...I hope I didn't ******** up the possibility of friendship ever happening again....

Laying in the back of Jack’s car in momentary suspense for almost five minutes, her heart leapt in her chest when Jack’s ringtone blared out of her phone. ‘ Jack!’, gasping, overjoyed, Bella wasted no time in prying the phone from her chest and snapping it open to see the text message. Irritated that her phone was already half-way down it’s battery life, Bella frowned and clicked the ‘ok’ button so that the phone didn’t have a panic attack in relaying the little tidbit of information. Finally able to open the text, Bella’s heart once more fluttered in her chest as the message blared onto the screen and lit up her face in the dark.

To: Bella
From: Jack
Message: I‘m fine. Don‘t worry about me. Everything is fine <3

Bella leaned her head back with a confused look on her face. Jack had sent her a double negative. Or, more really a double positive. In the end, it didn’t matter. A double negative or positive meant the same thing: Jack was lying…and poorly too. Furrowing her eyebrows, a part of Bella wanted to rush inside and demand to speak to him; however, seeing him and Skylar leave the room together might entail seeing something she didn’t want to see. Like making up or making ou…Shaking those thoughts from her head to the best of her abilities, her efforts to distract herself proved to be futile. With only the fabric of the chair to serve as a distraction, images that had been collected over the years of Jack and Skylar kissing each other snapped into her brain with a vengeance.

The pain resurfacing with the full extent of his fury, Bella clamped her eyes shut to avoid spilling any more tears. No tears came…but it could have fooled her. A stinging pain fooling her into believing that the tears would soon fall, Bella leaned forward to press her face against the back of the seat so that the fabric would catch any water that deigned to drop from her eyes. Even though no water could come, Bella subconsciously wiped her cheek against the rough material, perhaps hoping that the sensation of the fabric against her face would sooth away her worries. It didn’t; but, it certainly felt nice. Wanting to type a response, Bella lowered her head to open her phone, a downcast expression darkening her face. ‘
He probably wants to be left alone right now.’Like a little nail being tapped into her glass heart again and again, Bella’s hand slowly sank down to rest on the seat.

Not expecting to hear another sound from that ruby contraption, Bella closed her eyes and wished she was home. Well, if she even had a home left after all this mayhem took place. True, she could go to her apartment and be by herself; but, was it even safe anymore? Remembering her truck at the mall parking lot, Bella felt her stomach start to become sick. ‘
What if they towed it?…’, knowing there was -no- way she was going to get to Vermont or any nice bed and breakfast -alone- without her own car, Bella closed her eyes and whined. Not like a dog, persay, but like an animal feeling cornered. Like there was no way out. So lost in her thoughts, when the phone finally beeped again Bella nearly shot up and shrieked. ‘ Jack?!’ snapping it open with a depressed mood tainting her joy, Bella flickered her eyes over the message.

To: Bella.
From: Jack.
Message: I wish we could go somewhere, you and I, escape the madness… Which brings me to my next point: Bella, would you like to go out to a movie sometime? You know, like a real live date? d: <3

Just staring and blinking for heaven knows how long, Bella contemplated whether to answer through a text of just hit the talk button and call him. He doesn’t want to see you right now, he’s probably still talking to Skylar. Even if he doesn’t want to, he still wouldn’t answer the phone while talking a ‘serious’ talk with someone. As much as she wanted to disregard that foolish thought, Bella found that she couldn’t. Only able to half push it away, Bella closed her eyes and truly gave the matter some thought. ‘
if only we could go on a date…But there isn‘t a movie theatre around for miles. ’ Not that Bella wasn’t willing to sit in the car a little while extra just to ‘get away’ with Jack for a little while. If anything, it would only increase their time together. Pinning her thumb in preparation to type a response, another thought stalled her fingers from moving. He said ‘I wish’…not that he ‘could’. sighing from bitter disappointment, Bella shook her head and wondered how best to response. Obviously, Bella was going to say yes; but, when? ‘ Are we even dating right now? Am I even his girlfriend?’ inside, Bella could imagine a cruel voice laughing and saying: ‘no’. Unfortunately believing that, Bella cradled her body against the backseat of the car and closed her eyes. Terribly missing Toby at that very moment. The bear always seemed to care about problems, and for once she desperately wanted to hold him. ‘ I can‘t keep Jack waiting forever.’, opening her phone, Bella typed and re-typed several little tidbits of a message before finally clicking: ‘send’ and waiting. Too ashamed that her voice might sound watery to risk giving him a call.

To: Jack.
From: Bella.
Message: When do you mean: ‘sometime’?
I‘m…in the back of your car if you
want to go somewhere…
Or something.

Waiting for an answer, Bella kept staring at her phone in uncertainty. Her heart pounding in fear. Telling Jack her hiding place was a very risky move. Always preferring to be alone when she was in pain, the possibility that Jack would just stop by without warning her first brought forth sudden bursts of anxiety to flow through her nervous system. ‘
If he just shows up, he‘ll see that I‘m upset and ask me whats wrong.’ Or worse, regret walking to the car. He had certainly been through enough with Skylar in the hallway to ‘lie’ via text message…Did she really want to stress him out even further? Bella shook her head with a syrupy heart. Hurting Jack was the last thing she wanted to do right now; but, the hope of him folding her into his arms again…Like he had just forty minutes ago in the car…Bella could not shake away that image from her mind, and a part of her would always desperately long to be in Jack’s arms. ‘ Please don‘t be busy…I miss you.
▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄
Unfortunately, I can't forget what you mean to me.
But when I'm gone...will youto me?

As Cailen followed Alice to one of the bedrooms, he knew this was it. This was the talk where she said that she didn’t love him anymore and that they were through. She chose Adam over himself and now she was going to tell him so. Cailen sat down on one of the beds and looked at Alice. He was quiet as he waited for her to start, but it looked like she was having trouble thinking of what to say. As she opened her mouth to speak, he mentally prepared himself for the news he was expecting. He listened to her as she said she didn’t mean to hurt him. Sure neither of them did, but it doesn’t change the fact that they did. Although he knew Alice was sincere, Cailen couldn’t help but be bitter about the situation.

When she continued on to say that she still loved him, he couldn’t believe it. Cailen thought for sure that Alice didn’t love him anymore; that was why she didn’t want to be with him. It just didn’t make sense to him. If she loves me like she says she does, then why is she doing this? Why are we ending our relationship? Sometimes girls just didn’t make sense to him. She wanted things to work but…? But what? Her silence as she got up and walked over to the window was agonizing as he waited for her to continue. Was there any hope for their relationship? As soon as she said, well actually she implied, Adam’s name, he knew there wasn’t any hope. She was right, she couldn’t be in a relationship with him if she loved Adam. Cailen wouldn’t want that anyway, but maybe there was hope. Maybe Alice was right when she said that the time apart might be good for them. But did Cailen want that? Would he want to be with Alice after she’s been with Adam?

Once again Cailen found that he had the power to allow or prevent Alice and Adam’s relationship. He wondered why they put so much faith into his decision. What if he said he really didn’t want them to date? Would they seriously listen to him? As much as he’d like to believe it, he knew that if it eventually came to it, they would just date behind his back, and Cailen didn’t want that. He knew he couldn’t keep them from being together, but he wish he could say it wouldn’t hurt for them to be together. It would be strange, after being with Alice for so long, to see her in someone else’s arms and happy with someone else. Doing the things they used to do together, but without him. It would be strange since he couldn’t remember the last time Alice was with someone other than himself. Up until her last sentence, Cailen was able to keep himself together. He wasn’t really angry anymore, not after Adam’s really long apology.

Cailen couldn’t bear the fact that this was all his fault. It was him and his gambling that got him into this mess. Everything that happened today was his fault. It was my fault that Bella got kidnapped, that Alice got shot at, that Alice was now faced with HIV, and that everyone has to hide out in this cabin together. Everything is my fault. After realizing this, Cailen couldn’t help but be upset. He tried to hold it back, but it was hard. He had to take a few deep breaths just so he could speak. He didn’t know where to start though. After everything that Alice just said, he didn’t know which to address first. “I want you to know that I’m sorry too. I’m sorry my gambling caused you so much pain and if I took the time to realize that at the time, I would have stopped. This is all my fault and I’m sorry.” He looked down at his hands and started to twiddle his thumbs out of nerves.

“I love you too. Even after all this, I still do, but I know that you love Adam too. As much as I wish I could say that seeing you guys together wouldn’t hurt, I can’t. But I don’t want me to keep you from, being happy. So if you want to be with Adam you can. Don’t stop yourself just because of me, because knowing that, it won’t make me feel any better.” It would hurt to see Adam and Alice together, but it would hurt more to see her unhappy because he won’t allow them to be together. In this case, it was a lose-lose situation for Cailen. “It will be some time before I will be ok with this, but I will. Adam and I sort of made up just before you came in and I kind of told him the same thing. So I want you to know that I will be ok, and you don’t have to worry about me.”

Cailen was quiet as he thought of something else to say. He didn’t really know what to say though. He couldn’t put his thoughts and his feelings into words. It was weird to experience. He used to be able to tell Alice almost everything. It was never this hard to speak to her. Was this all a sign that things between them were not meant to be? “So I guess this means we’re over?” It was a stupid question to ask because after everything that was just said, it was clear that their relationship was over, but for some reason he wanted a straight up answer. He wanted to clear the gray area and make things black and white. He didn’t want any confusion on the matter, and most of all he just wanted closure.

"I want you to know that I’m sorry too. I’m sorry my gambling caused you so much pain and if I took the time to realize that at the time, I would have stopped. This is all my fault and I’m sorry."

Alice felt a sharp pain in the pit of her stomach hearing him apologize. It wasn't just that he was apologizing for the gambling, he was apologizing for everything. After spending so many years together, she could still read Cailen like a book. She wanted to tell him that everything wasn't solely his fault, that she'd been the one who had gotten Alexis' attention which got her involved. On top of that, no one at any point decided to call the police. So everyone was just as guilty by association. Each time she tried to speak, she found herself unable as if a wall of water in her throat was preventing noise from emanating out.

"I love you too. Even after all this, I still do, but I know that you love Adam too. As much as I wish I could say that seeing you guys together wouldn’t hurt, I can’t. But I don’t want me to keep you from, being happy. So if you want to be with Adam you can. Don’t stop yourself just because of me, because knowing that, it won’t make me feel any better."

Cailen's next bit of speech hit her just as hard as the first. She knew just how much it would hurt Cailen to see her with Adam. It would be the exact same feeling that she herself would feel to see Cailen with Skylar. Of course, she knew that even if she were able to speak that it wasn't something she would even begin to mention. She had absolutely no right to do so; but she hoped that Cailen would realize how painful it would be, knowing how he would feel in that situation.

Although Alice did want to try to give things a shot with Adam, she couldn't deny the voice inside of her that told her perhaps jumping into another relationship would be an exceptionally bad idea. She needed time to be unattached to anyone and have a completely clear head before dating anyone else, even Adam. Even though Cailen had just told her that he wouldn't keep them from dating, Alice knew that she wouldn't be able to live with herself if she went straight from breaking up with him to dating someone else, basically just throwing it in Cailen's face by doing so.

"So I guess this means we’re over?"

Now Alice was forced to speak again, Cailen had asked her a question that she knew required answering on her part. Not wanting to just tell him, "Yes" and leave it at that, she searched her brain for a better way to express those three letters. The more she thought about how she was going to go about doing this, the more she found it harder to speak. The words would start to come up, but mix with the tears and cause her to choke on what she wanted to say. Instead of speaking, she nodded her head to signal what she couldn't say.

Even though she told herself that she wasn't going to allow herself to be seen crying anymore, Alice decided that she at least owed it to Cailen to make some sort of eye-contact, especially since she wasn't able to form any actual words. Alice had done what she could to ease up just how badly she had been crying from moments before, but the act of pinning her gaze to Cailen's was enough to open the floodgates once again. She had expected this to be hard, but not nearly this hard. Of course, Alice had actually never experienced a break up in which the two parties involved were still in love with each other before, so she had no idea what she actually should be expecting.

Once Cailen had posed his question, the two remained absolutely silent, and Alice began to fear that if she didn't say something that Cailen was just going to get up and leave. Technically, he already had his answer if he had noticed her gesture, so there wasn't much point in him even staying.

"I don't... I... I d -..." Alice attempted to speak, only making minimal progress from what she had been making before. She attempted to swallow past the lump that had formed in her throat and decided to try again. "I don't... blame you. For what's happened. We're all somehow at fault for where we are right now." Another extended pause on Alice's part. She wanted to find some way to just tell him, that yes... they were no longer dating. "I really hope we can still be friends like we were before."

She decided that was going to have to do, there really was no easy way to end the conversation, even though at this point her mind was screaming at her to do so. As if trying to push the point, Alice began to feel the throbbing sensation in her arm again. The medication she had obtained from Jack must have worn off and drew her attention from her broken heart to the pain in her arm. "I wonder if there is a First Aid kit around here somewhere?"

Alice felt a pang of guilt for abruptly changing the subject, but she couldn't ignore the fact that once again, her arm was killing her. Eventually, she was going to need to see a doctor about it, perhaps she would just wait until everything was over and make an appointment with her own doctor; since she would need to go regarding her recent diagnosis. The hospital had only given her enough medication to last a few days.

outofcharacter: Could I pick a worse song to listen to while writing this? Holy moly Alice, stop making me cry. Srsly. I'm sick and slightly dehydrated from being sick... I can't afford to cry right now!

After asking his last question, the room became silent. The silence only confused Cailen more. He thought it was going to be a simple answer. He already knew it was over, he just wanted to be sure. Apparently Alice wasn’t sure, or at least that was what Cailen thought the silence meant. Of course it could have been because she just didn’t want to say the words. Maybe, like him, she didn’t want it to be true. He just wished that none of this had happened; maybe then everything would be ok between them. Who am I kidding? This has been going on for awhile. One small change wasn’t going to make a difference. Daring to look up at Alice, who still was facing the window, he saw her nod. She couldn’t even say the words, and by the she was acting it seemed that was all she could do.

After another moment of silence, Alice finally looked over at him. The pain and sadness on her face felt like a stab to his heart. At the same time, he sort of felt glad that this hurt her just as much as it hurt him. He wanted to go over to her and just wrap her in his arms. Even if they were no longer together, he wanted to do what he could to make things better. This just didn’t make sense to him at all. If this was causing them so much pain and they both still loved each other, then why were they doing this? Why are they causing each other all this sadness? Because being together wouldn’t make things much better. There was no way to win. Anything they did would hurt someone somehow. Why does life have to be so complicated? Upon making eye contact with Alice, Cailen could see the pain in her eyes and the tears breaking free. Trying to hold his own tears back, he got up and crossed the room where he wrapped his arms around her.

He didn’t care if it wasn’t the best idea to be hugging her. She was hurt, and so was he, and they needed this moment. They needed to hold each other for what might be the last time. He could hear Alice trying to say something in between the tears, but she was having a hard time. He rubbed her back letting her know that it was ok. It was nice to hear that she didn’t blame this on him, even though he still blamed himself. Sure all this might not be entirely his fault, but that was how he felt. By this point he had tears of his own tricking down his cheeks. He couldn’t hold it back any longer. Knowing something that he loved was ending was a hard thing to deal with. He was glad that she still wanted to be friends. I guess if I can’t have her in my life as my girlfriend, a friend is better than nothing. Cailen wished they could be friends, like the old times, but he knew things were never going to be the same.

After you’ve dated someone for so long, going back to being just friends was going to be hard. “I hope so too,” he said responding to her wanting to still be friends. He didn’t really don’t know what else to say at this point. Break ups were always hard to do, and this one seemed to be especially hard. Alice managed to change the subject by asking for a first aid kit. His eyes went straight to Alice’s arm where her sleeve was stained from the blood. He had completely forgotten about Alice getting shot. He was surprised she was able to hold out this long. “Oh Alice, your arm. Um, I’ll see if I can find one.” He looked around as if one was going to appear out of nowhere. After everything that just happened, it was hard to get his thoughts straight. Finally he realized the bathroom would be the best place to find one. Slightly running down the hands to the small bathroom he opened the cabinets till he found a small first aid kit. Grabbing it, he ran back to the bedroom he’d left just a few moments ago.

“Ok, uh, I don’t have much medical experience, but, I can see what I can do.” He opened the kit to see what was in it. He rummaged around until he found some gauze and rubbing alcohol. He remembered what his mom used to do when he came home with all sorts of cuts and injuries when he was a kid. He also remembered how bad the alcohol stung when his mom used it to clean the wound. Remembering how much he hated it and how much it stung, Cailen became afraid to do it. He hadn’t even seen how bad the wound was, but from the bleeding, he knew it was no ordinary cut. “On second thought, maybe I shouldn’t do anything. You really should see a doctor.” He was afraid to mess anything up. He didn’t want to hurt Alice anymore than what he already did. He knew what to do, clean the wound then wrap it in gauze to prevent an infection, but he wasn’t sure if she would want him to help. He looked away to hide his embarrasment on the matter and hoped Alice didn't notice.

Standing outside the door of his downtown penthouse, Harrison continued to glance down at his wristwatch every few heartbeats. Waiting for Ronald to finish packing his toys. Having re-packed his bags three times to comply with what one 'should' pack for a vacation, Ronald only considered 'legos' to be a valuable commodity. After much argument and deliberation, Harrison simply had Florr pack three boxes worth of legos into the back of his Rolls Royce. Now, waiting for his youngest son to decide whether or not to bring his stuffed animals, Harrison once more bent his chin to observe his watch.

7:37 p.m.

"
The boat wont wait forever Ronald.", Lying to his child perhaps wasn't the best idea, but Ron wasn't quite old enough to understand the concept of lying. Truth was, Harrison owned a two-person boat in Redwood Pond that was still tied to the dock. Planning on using it as a valid excuse to visit both Bella and her 'friends', Harrison decided to bring his son along. The man rarely ever spent quality time with his children, and perhaps he felt the desire to try and fix his relationships with them. Starting with little Ronald.

If only he would hurry...

~

Finally pulling out of the driveway at a quarter to eight, it would only take forty minutes at the most to arrive at his lakehouse. Assuming they didn't stop for ice cream. Sending a text message at the corner stop light, Harrison hoped to escape from the world. Whenever Tony opened his phone, he would discover this:

To: Tony.
From: Harrison.
Message: Handle the business for a couple
of days. Ronald and I are going
on a vacation. Don't bother me
unless its important.

Stay with the demons you drown
Stay with the spirit I found
Stay
and the night would be enough

As Cailen walked off in search of something resembling a first aid kit, Alice removed her sweater to reveal the sleeveless pink top underneath. She hadn't gotten a good look at the wound since the quick trip in the bathroom, and was surprised at how much it hurt for something that only appeared to be small. Of course, looks could be deceiving and it probably wasn't as minuscule as it looked, especially with all of the blood.

When Cailen returned, having found a small first aid kit, he rummaged around looking for the items that he would need to clean the wound up. At first it looked like he was going to do the job himself, but after a few moments Alice noticed that he was hesitating. She couldn't figure out why, all he needed to do was dab some of the rubbing alcohol onto it and then bandage it up. Maybe he feels awkward about doing it, since we just broke up.

"On second thought, maybe I shouldn’t do anything. You really should see a doctor."

That was it. Although Alice agreed that her wound needed medical attention, she knew that unless someone felt like calling the police about Alexis, that there was no way it was going to be safe for any of them to leave the lakehouse. They didn't even know if the lakehouse was safe for sure, but it was the best thing they had to go with right now.

"I should, I know. But we can't go anywhere right now. If I keep it clean and bandaged, it'll buy me a few extra days before needing to get it looked at," Alice explained, taking the items from the first aid kit from him. Once she had what she needed, she made her way to the bathroom where there was a mirror and more light and began to clean out the wound. "MOTHER F--" she yelled out. The alcohol on the fresh wound was definitely a horrific stinging sensation; enough to make her call out a curse word of that calibre.

After cleaning the wound and surrounding area, Alice grabbed some gauze and medical tape to bandage up her arm. Once everything was clean and wrapped up it looked a lot better than it had before. Of course, the sweater she had previously been wearing had definitely seen better, non-bloodstained days. She decided that it would be best to just leave it off. Upon leaving the bathroom, she noticed that Cailen was still standing in the bedroom, as if waiting to see how the bandaging worked out. "This should hold up for a bit. Hmm.... something smells really good!"

Alice exited the room and followed the delicious smell into the kitchen, where it appeared that someone had prepared dinner for the group. Whoever it was, Alice was incredibly thankful; she had listened to the sound of her stomach growling the entire day, but ignored it as there were more important things; like - staying alive, on her mind. "Someone's trying to win over my heart. Whoever's cooking that... holy crap, that smells amazing!" Alice laughed, before poking around until she found the others; or, rather - just Adam and Skylar. Jack had seemed to of disappeared, but Alice assumed that he had gone after Bella.

She looked in Adam's direction, wondering if now would be a good time to tell him that even though Cailen gave the green light, that she didn't think dating right away would be the best idea. She couldn't seem to bring herself to do it, instead, she flashed him a simple smile and turned her attention to Skylar. "So, I'm not taking no for an answer on sharing that room, by the way," Alice laughed once more, trying to brighten up Skylar's mood, which judging by her face had not improved much.

Jack stood in silence as he took in the night air. He waited for his phone to go off again, he hoped he hadn’t come off as forward or anything, he knew the situation they were all currently in was quite serious, he just didn’t want anyone to think he hadn’t just blew off the entire day just because there was a brief moment of calm. (It's always calm right before the storm.) Jack bit his lip and sucked in a huge breath. It tasted like the lake. It wasn’t a bad scent in the air, just different compared to the city. He rolled his eyes and leaned his head forward. Soon after, his body slumped over so he could rest his forehead against his forearms on the railing. Before he could go any deeper into his thoughts, his phone went off. As quick as he could, Jack sprang up and pulled the phone out to read said message.

The message made him laugh out loud, but then he stopped abruptly. Why did she climb into the back of his car? Jack raised an eyebrow and decided it would be best to actually confront her. If they did want to be together and show affection, it might as well be far away from the others as to not cause any more pain on a particular person’s face. Jack, in a nearly forgetful and hysterical moment, felt his pockets for his car keys. They were, in fact, in his pocket. A huge sigh of relief came upon him. Quickly, jack turned on his heel and hurried down the steps to head down and towards the driveway. He knew that Bella would probably prefer time alone, but she could have time alone anywhere in the house. But she wasn’t there. She was in his car.

Jack finally meandered enough to finally (‘coincidentally’) find the driveway. The place was huge. It was nearly impossible to find his way in the dark. He couldn’t wait till the sun came up to really get a good view and see just how beautiful the place really was. Jack fumbled through the darkness, his eyes watching the ground in front of him. Before he could notice, he had walked directly into his car. He looked around, he certainly hoped that no one had seen his little clumsy moment. Jack wasn’t usually clumsy, but when so many things were on his mind the world around him tended to vanish from the haze. Quietly, he grabbed the back door and pulled it open to get a good look at Bella’s feet. He chuckled, “What are you doing in here?” He ducked his head into the car to get a better look at Bella. “Something on your mind?”

User Image Walking out into the living room, Adam was about to say something to Skylar when her words broke his concentration. Even if it barely showed on his face, Skylar’s words affected him on a personal level. Reciting them in his head, Adam let his eyes drift down towards the floor. I’m tired of being the better person. It wasn’t that Adam was the best man in the world, especially with the lifestyle he used to live, but there were ‘some’ things he did that he had hoped would make him acceptable to his friends. As much as Adam wanted to say something to her, nothing came to mind. ‘ There‘s nothing I can say to make this situation better without spilling my life story.’, looking back towards Skylar, Adam let his stone-cold face curve in an indignant expression. Out of everyone in the group besides Alice, perhaps even more-so, Adam had thought Skylar to naturally be a sweet and innocent seeming person. The idea of Skylar being enraged, bitter, or hateful was simply too much of an oddity to ignore. As if everything he thought he knew about his friend was null and void. Maybe everything was falling apart; but, it would certainly not stay that way if he had anything to say about it. Which, unfortunately, he did.

I‘m sick of it too, Sky. It gets hard trying to be fine when your not. If not for the fact that I didn‘t bring my car, you don‘t think I‘d be wanting to just hit the road until all this bullsh*t is over? But you know, our friends need us here. I need to be here and play ‘nice‘. ”, letting his rant stop there, Adam let out a breath and began to walk towards the dinner table. Simply because he would need his strength if any form of attack happened to stop by. Shaking his head at walking away, Adam turned back towards Skylar. ‘ Its not ending like this.’, a determined look showing on his face, Adam crossed his arms over his chest.

Skylar, do you realize how much what you said hurts me?” Turning around promptly to fix himself a plate, Adam pulled the top off of the steamer to find that the green beans were finished cooking. Happy at a job well done, Adam found a few serving spoons for the rice and green beans. Using a gigantic fork to pick at one of the lemon chicken pieces like a caveman to put it on his plate, Adam put the fork back down beside the pan full of chicken before moving to the table and almost tossing his pate onto the wooden surface. Glancing towards the window, Adam sat down and wished he could properly admire the lake. ‘ It must be nice out there.’, only then noticing that Bella was gone, Adam raised an inquisitive brow.

Hey, have you seen--”, realizing the catastrophe of mentioning Bella around Skylar, Adam simply swallowed the final word and turned his attention towards the lovely dinner sitting in front of him. As he began to eat using a knife as a utensil, he vaguely patted the seat next to him.

Why don’t you sit; eat, sky? Stay for a while.”, meaning nothing hinting or sexual in the request, Adam kept his eyes on the window for the longest time. Or more really, what seemed like the longest time. Hearing footsteps entering the chamber, Adam’s head continued to face the glass until a voice broke him out of his concentration. Seeing Alice standing there, his heart began to sink in his chest. She and Cailen fixed things. The thought was almost enough to make him disinterested in his food. As it was, his stomach only growled more. Seeing what looked to be an ‘oh no, how do I tell him?’ smile grace her face, his stomach only turned more.

So, I‘m not taking no for an answer on sharing that room, by the way.

To Skylar, that might have been dreaded news; but, to Adam, it was proof that she was purposefully avoiding him. ‘
I‘m not putting up with this bullsh*t tonight.’, determined not to be the sad ‘lonesome’ or desperate member of the party, a devious thought began to turn in his head. No! Don’t do that Adam. Like hell he wasn’t. ‘ I don‘t like sky that way and you know it, but I wont be seen as pathetic.’ An almost angered tone overshadowing his face, Adam leaned on one of his hands and turned his head towards Skylar with a devious grin forming on his mouth.

Hey Skylar, want to hang out later? Just me and you?”, Adam let his eyes flicker towards Alice in the hopes of seeing a jealous reaction. If -anyone- was going to be driving anyone crazy tonight, it was going to be him. ‘ See how you like that after f*cking with me like I‘m nothing.’, pissed underneath his devious cherade, Adam raised his eyebrows and waited for Skylar’s answer.

Waiting in the darkness of Jack’s backseat for the longest time, Bella began to fear the worst when she didn’t hear a text right away. ‘
Jack, where are you?’, not thinking that Jack would come to see her since he usually gave her space, the noise caused by Jack bumping into the back of the car scared her half to death. Thinking it to be Tony or this ‘Alexis’ person, Bella almost screamed bloody murder. Until she saw the familiar flannel shirt pop into view. Seeing him standing there, Bella’s heart skipped a beat and she hastily sat up in the car to keep from looking ‘too’ appealing. Wetting her lips, Bella raised her right hand to brush her wavy hair behind her ear and send him a bright little smile just as the backdoor opened.

What are you doing here?”, A reddish tint flushed her face at hearing his voice again, and Bella could not help but bite her lip and let the man climb into his car. Feeling like teenagers sneaking out of their parent‘s house, she debated locking her door. If anything, she didn‘t have time to contemplate more before seeing Jack‘s head duck down to look at her. Seeing his mouth open, her usually cringing face began to show a lighthearted version of the expression. ‘
Here is comes…

Something on your mind?”, Bella had that joke coming, so she simply smirked as a response at the way men think. Grinning broadly at the potential tease, Bella decided to do something different than she usually did, and stood up on her knees to grab her fingers around the collar of his shirt, lean in, and press her mouth to his own. If he didn’t get the idea now after that kiss he gave her in the car, then maybe he was brain-damaged. Blushing at the tickle his beard caused against her chin, Bella giggled against Jack’s mouth before she parted the kiss with a ‘smack’ sound and smiled at him. Deciding to be coy, she tilted her head as if to be ‘girly’ or ‘appealing’.

Your on my mind…”, Bella leaned back against the opposite door of the backseat, parting her legs to get comfortable and letting her wavy hair sprawl out over her chest and shoulders. To say what she really wanted to say: ‘The backseat smells like you.’ being too embarrassing to mention, Bella rethought her words and came up with an even better thing to say.

I figured this was the only way we could be alone…

As he looked down at his hands, Cailen hoped Alice didn’t think of him as a wimp. It wasn’t the fact that he didn’t like the sight of blood or anything like that; he just didn’t want to hurt her anymore. Even if he knew the pain was actually supposed to help, he couldn’t bring himself to bring her more pain. He listened to her answer to his last statement. True, getting it cleaned and bandaged would help it. They didn’t have time to bring her to a doctor to get it fixed, so they had to settle for what they could do now. Cailen was about to help her when she took the alcohol and bandages and went off to the bathroom. Waiting for the inevitable sound, he winced when he heard her react to the alcohol on her open wound. He could almost feel the stinging sensation as he remembered what it felt like as a kid.

Cailen just stood in the bedroom not too sure what to do next. He figured he’d let Alice have her time in the bathroom and wait for her to let him know how it went. As he stood there waiting, he noticed Alice’s bloody sweater lying on the bed. He just couldn’t believe that Alexis shot her. That proved just how dangerous she was. This was no joke; all of their lives were in danger. This wasn’t some game they played as kids where hiding out was all part of the fun. This was serious. It hadn’t really dawned on him just how serious this was. After running around all day with hardly any time to think about this situation, he didn’t have time to think about it. As he thought about it now, he became worried. How is this all going to end? Were they all going to get away unharmed, or was one of them not going to make it out alive? Cailen tried not to think of that and was glad when Alice came back from the bathroom.

He smiled at Alice’s sudden distraction from the smell coming from the kitchen. At least her arm doesn’t look so bad, he noted as she walked back out to the hall. He stood there for a few more moments. He still had that urge to wrap his arms around her, or grab her hand as she walked away. It was hard to ignore it. When she wasn’t with Adam, she was the Alice he loved. He knew they were not together anymore, but he still couldn’t wrap his mind over the fact that it was really over. They’d “separated” before, but somehow Cailen always knew they were going to get back together. This time they were really separated. There was no making up a few weeks later. It was hard for him to think of himself as a single man. He’d been with Alice for a long time and even when they were taking one of their breaks, he never considered himself single. Of course he wasn’t ready to date anyone else yet, but the fact that he was alone felt weird. It was a strange loneliness that Cailen wasn’t used to feeling.

The smell from the dinner that Adam made wafted its way to Cailen’s nose. Just the smell made his stomach growl with hunger. Man, am I hungry. Walking back out to the kitchen the smell got stronger and his stomach got louder. He got out just in time to hear Adam ask Skylar to hang out later, just the two of them. Confused as to what he missed, he looked to Skylar to see her reaction to Adam’s question. What did I miss? He stopped where he was standing to wait to see what happened next. This was not something he expected. Cailen thought Adam would be all over Alice, especially after he just told the both of them that he wasn’t going to stop them from being together. Now the tables have turned. Is he making a move on Skylar? This thought angered Cailen. How could he do that? Does he not realize that she is heartbroken and doesn’t need you messing with her? He couldn’t understand why Adam would do that. Cailen was beginning to like the man again, dismissing all his anger after Adam’s apology.

Cailen thought Adam wanted to try and repair their friendship. If that was the case, he wasn’t doing a very good job. He could feel his anger building again as he thought what Adam could be up to. If she hurts either one of them, I am going to kill him. Was he trying to play games with Alice and Skylar? He tried to give Adam a warning look, but as soon as he looked in Adam’s direction his eyes fell on the food he was eating. All previous thoughts seemed to escape his mind as all he could think about now was getting something to eat. His stomach was begging for food and Cailen’s mouth almost watered at the smell of the chicken. Moving now towards the pan of chicken he looked around for a plate. “Do you mind if I take some?” he asked. He looked around at Adam, because he made it, but couldn’t wait for an answer. He took a fork and knife and filled his plate with the chicken and rice and green beans, making sure to leave enough for everyone else. It looked like enough was made for everyone, so he decided to help himself. He grabbed a glass of water and sat down at the table, across from Adam and dug in.

Not that she thought Adam wasn’t a good person by any means. She had great respect for Adam but she knew that he could let loose every now and then and not even worry about the consequences. That was what she wanted. She didn’t want to worry about others at the moment. She wanted to be selfish. Hearing his comment, Skylar was reminded why she usually chose not to say stuff like that. She hated the thought that any of her friends would think of her as a bad person. It was the main reason she chose to look on the bright side and make anyone feel better if they were feeling down.

Skylar saw just how much she had offended Adam when he turned away and then simple turned right back with his comment. What she said hadn’t meant to be hurtful by any means. She was just expressing her feelings. The need to apologize to Adam hit her pretty hard. She was even close enough to open her mouth and actually say so when a thought popped in her head. This is what you wanted to avoid. You don’t want to be the one who apologizes for everything. This stopped her from saying her apology but it did nothing for the guilt she felt inside. No, she wanted to tell her mind, this guilt is what I want gone.

Skylar was ready to resign herself to the fact that she had pissed off another one of her friends. There was one more person in this place that didn’t want her there. She heard Adam say something but she didn’t really think about it. She didn’t want to listen to Adam be upset with her anymore. Of course, after that, she heard Adam asking her to sit and eat. So he wasn’t mad? Skylar was too confused to continue this questioning about what others thought about her. Did it even matter at this moment? She simply nodded and picked up a plate and grabbed some food.

It wasn’t until the smell of the food hit her that Skylar realized she hadn’t really eaten all day. She had skipped breakfast because she usually never ate it anyway, thinking she would eat at the mall. That never happened. She had basically been running off of adrenaline, being too busy to worry about food at all. Now that things had calmed down slightly she knew she was hungry. The food was delicious as well. Who knew that Adam could cook like this?

Then Alice and Cailen had joined the room. She heard Alice tall her that basically Skylar would be rooming with her no matter what. She didn’t know what to say about this. The thought of sleeping wasn’t on her mind. She knew that it had been a long day and she would need her rest but she didn’t feel exhausted at all. Instead, she felt nervous and anxious. She just wanted to get out of there. Of course, there was no way Skylar could voice any of this. Instead, she just offered Alice a small smile. She didn’t want to offend Alice, especially since they hadn’t had a chance to talk through things yet.

While she was trying to think of something she could say to Alice, Skylar’s attention was taken off the topic by Adam speaking to her. He had a strange look on his face like he meant something else by saying they could hang out but all Skylar really heard was it just being the two of them. That would mean they would be away from everyone else. That idea really appealed to her at the moment. She didn’t want to be around Jack and Bella and if she was away with Adam she wouldn’t have to worry about that. ”Sure, yeah I would like that.”

Alice couldn't believe the words that she was hearing come out of Adam's mouth. Did he just ask Skylar to hang out? Just the two of them? I can't ******** believe this! Alice repeated that that line over and over again in her head, the pain in her chest resurfacing twice as much as it had before. I knew I never meant anything to you! I ******** -KNEW- it! She wanted to start crying. Even more - she wanted to start screaming right then and there at Skylar. First she crawls into the comforting arms of Cailen... and then the second I turn my back... there she is with Adam! Alice tried everything she knew to contain just how angry she was at the entire situation but she could still feel the blood boil underneath her skin.

Alice took one look at the food that had been prepared - the food that Adam was now munching on. What had seemed so appealing moments before suddenly repulsed her; the anger completely wiping away any semblance of an appetite that she might have had. Bella was wrong... Bella was so wrong! How could I think that I'd matter enough to him to change his ways?! Speech seemed to be just out of Alice's grasp. There were so many things she wanted to say all at the same time that they jumbled together and blocked anything from actually coming out. At first, she contemplated just getting up and walking out of the lakehouse. She would find the nearest residence that still had lights on and go knock on their door. She would call the police and everything would be solved - and in the meantime, she wouldn't have to deal with seeing her two friends who were causing her all of this heartbreak, without even knowing it.

"Sure, I would like that," The sound of Skylar's reply made Alice want to vomit.

"Sky... the room is all yours. Maybe you two can go hang out in there," Alice finally found her words and spoke with a slight bite to the sounds coming out. That wasn't all Alice had intended on saying, either. Sure Alice was angry at Skylar for seemingly have everything that she ever wanted just fall in her lap, but she was livid at Adam for making her think that he actually felt something for her. She had only been out of the room for fifteen minutes... half an hour at the most, and he'd already moved on. A sickening feeling crept up in her stomach. Suddenly Alice couldn't help but feel incredibly dirty, like she was just a whore who slept with people who she thought cared about her, but really were just messing with her head. "You know what... all of a sudden, I'm not very hungry," Alice barked, this time directing her statement in Adam's direction. "And Adam... you can royally go ******** yourself. Next time warn me that you don't mean s**t when you say you love me. I just broke up with someone I've been dating for... I don't even know how long... all because I'm head over heels in love with you. Guess that doesn't matter, does it? You don't care. You never cared. I'm done. I'm done with this whole ******** situation!"

Alice started to make her way out of the kitchen. She wanted to turn around and make a bitter remark about Skylar deserving what had happened to her, but even in her anger she couldn't justify stabbing a knife into that fresh wound. Instead, she kept her statement a bit more neutral.

"I'm going to go call the police now... I'm done with this crap," she stated before leaving, hoping in her heart that Adam would prove everything she said wrong, but knowing deep down that she was expecting too much. He didn't love her. He never loved her.

Alice decided against using the phone in the lakehouse to make the call, not being able to bring herself to stay at that place for a moment longer with the way her heart was breaking. Instead, she bolted in the direction of the front door and slammed it behind her. Without looking back she began walking.
