Hatsumomo looked at her for moment.Then with a nice smile she hands the brush to Yume."Here you go." While looking the mirror she Hatsumomo says "What's your name again?"

"My name is Yume," Yume said shyly. While she was brushing Hatsumomo's hair, Yume started to talk, "You are very pretty. I hope you get whatever you're looking for. You see, I admire your determination and hope to be just like you, you know what you want and you are set to do whatever is needed to get it. I hope we can be allies and maybe even sisters one day?" Yume did not look into Hatsumomo's eyes, afraid to offend her in any way.

When Yume was done chatting with Hatsumomo ((not knowing a reply to her question since Hatsumomo is offline)), she gave her back her brush and excused herself with the most respect.
"I wonder what I should do now?" Yume thought. She went back to the maid's quarters and started to clean some of her clothes, trying to look the least bit presentable or some kind of pretty.

While Yume was cleaning her clothes, Okaa-san called for her. "Get me rice and pickled plums," she ordered. "Right away, Okaa-san," Yume replied, and with that she excused herself, went to the kitchen and told the cook what to make.
As the cook prepaired the rice, Yume saw a mouse. The cook said to kill it, but Yume was too kind-hearted. She got a broken bowl and plate that was thrown away and picked up the mouse and set it free outside.
Yume washed her hands, took Okaa-san's food and gave it to her. Okaa-san dismissed her and Yume once again didn't know what to do with herself.

Yume was starving and went into the kitchen to ask the cook for some rice. The cook didn't give her any. "Why won't you give me food?" She asked. "You let that rat go and now he's back!" the cook said. The cook told Yume that he'd give her food if she'd kill the mouse, but she couldn't. Yume didn't get food...luckily fellow maids and some maiko gave her leftovers.
Until the mouse died of old age (a few days later), the cook didn't give Yume food...but luckily when the mouse died, the cook apologized and gave Yume a special dessert, shaved ice.

No one could stay mad at Yume for a long time...even Okaa-san. Once, Yume tripped on a tatami mat and broke a tea cup. Okaa-san didn't yell, she just calmly said that the tea cup was added to her debt...she even said it nicely which made Yume confused because she thought she would have gotten into big trouble.

One day when Yume was making her futon, she looked around at the other maids and wondered, "Look at all of these beautiful women. I can't believe I have to compete against even one of them. I don't know how I'm going to be successful and be loved. I even have to compete against Hatsumomo-sempai." With a nervous soul, Yume just got ready for the day and went off to do her chores.

After a long rain, Okaa-san told Yume to wipe the patio ((is that the right term??)) dry so none of the geisha or maiko trip and injure themself...which was smart because while Yume was standing up to move to a different spot to clean, she tripped and fell. Her clothes were wet but she kept on working, thinking that if she changed, she might get those clothes dirty too. When she was done, the patio was sparkling clean.

Almost a maiko, Yume was excited, yet nervous and intimidated. She did want to pursue her dream and destiny, yet she was scared that some friendships may break or enemies will be made. She looks at the garden at the beautiful flowers thinking about her future...which strangely made her think about her past...who were her parents? Were they still alive? If they were alive, will they contact her if she becomes a famous geisha? "Only time will tell," she said to herself.

Walking through the garden, raking leaves for Okaa-san, Yume was looking forward to becoming a maiko. The wind blew through her hair and the sun made her brown eyes sparkle. "I wonder if things would change that much," she thought to herself, "I wouldn't think things would be that different." She was starting to feel the butterflies about the ceremony to come and a smile suddenly grew across her oval, fair face.

Yume was cleaning a dust covered room filled with cobwebs and spiderwebs. She opened a window and began to dust. She coughed and her eyes began to tear because the dust was so thick. When the dust finally cleared, she saw what the room was filled with: old pictures, really old kimonos and head ornaments and old newspapers articles about geisha. This room was filled with history and culture that Yume felt overwhelmed. Just then a butterfly flew past the window and Yume felt a sudden surge of relief.

Before heading to the hall of ceremonies, Yume secretly went into her things in the maids' quarters and took out the two head ornaments, the flower and the butterflies. "Soon, I'll find out where you came from and why I got you," she muttered while looking at the treasures, "I'll also be able to wear you without getting into trouble...it's not long now." She put them into her sash for good luck for being accepted and went off...

Yokome sat in her room, getting ready to go out to the salon. One maiko was joining her and she asked if others wanted to as well. "Could some one please get me a case of white foundation?" Yokome said as she walked over to the maids' quarters. She needed to touch up her make-up.
