Raquel blinked blankly fora moment, piecing things together. "Lorey...was that the-" She stopped, recalling the beautiful young lady in bed with the older, attractive man. "Oh...You poor thing..." She furrowed her brow, realizing what this was all about and suddenly felt guilty for behaving the way she did. He had no interest in her past but merely wanted a way to patch himself up. She sighed a little and reached out to touch his face. "Come with me..." She said in a strangely soothing yet almost motherly voice. She grasped his hand firm yet gently and pulled him along, not looking back.

She led him past a few broken down buildings until they arrived to one with maybe a few less broken windows than the other. "I apologize for judging you so quickly..." She said quietly, leading him to the back of the building and reveling a door, hidden among the trash. She opened it and led him in to a small room, with a dirty cot in one corner, a small pile of clothes in the other. There seemed to be a sink and toilet though they looked to have been out of order for 20 some odd years. The only thing that stood out in the room was an old guitar, kept in perfect condition except fora few scratches and a crack here or there. She turned to him getting unexpectedly close to his face. She traced his lips with a single slender finger as if it were some foreign object to her. "It's my job to make men feel loved..." She started getting a tad closer, as if trying to read his body vibes. "But that's not the kind of love you're looking for huh?" She asked looking him directly in the eye before turning to gather her few belongings. "Excuse the mess.." She added over her shoulder as she picked through the small pile of previously mentioned clothes.

Her touch left his skin tingling as if someone had charged every nerve ending. The pounding in his head seems to travel down to his heart, but he would control himself. Raquel would not be someone he would sleep with, ever. Taking advantage of her like that would only sink him deeper into his hell.

It seemed he had already been brought into one, though. Damian could honestly say he had never been in a slum environment before... all he could think of then being Lorey, of course. She had lived in an apartment, all broken down and crime-ridden. How had she done it, he wondered? How had Raquel survived?

"She... used to work as a cleaning woman in the Ballroom," he began. Her sudden change of heart made him feel like he could confide in her, and good Lord, did he need to tell his story. "I tossed her out of doors to make her become something better. But I unwittingly brought her into the arms of another man... the worst part being that they are seemingly perfect for one another."

His eyes scanned the ugly place carefully, wondering what Richard had seen in his years of darkness.
"Both carry on in hysterics, both have these open hearts... both are as poor as anything. I suppose I should be happy for them."

Raquel had her back turned to him as she finally found the shirt she was looking for, stripped off her old one as if Damian wasn't even there, and redressed her self promptly she tossed the rather seductive, old shirt into the pile as she located an old beaten up guitar case and placed the fragile instrument into it with care. "...But you still love her...that's understandable." She said, making sense of his story as she listened carefully. She sat at the edge of the bunk and looked back at him cocking her head. "It sounds like you did the right thing. And that if this Lorey doesn't love you for it as much as she loves this other man, than it's simply not meant to be." She didn't mean to come off so harsh, it was just a fact she wanted him to see. "All it mean's is if she seemed so perfect for you in your eyes, imagine what you're real love will be like." She said with a tiny smile. "There'll be no doubt in either of your minds that you love each other. It's just as simple as that..." She offered, feeling the irony of her words taste sour rolling around her tongue. It was obvious she didn't feel that way, but ti was a nice thing to believe in. Plus she knew that Damian needed to hear something hopeful. Raquel herself didn't believe in love at all. To her there was no such thing as one being being forever dedicated and forever faithful to one other being. It just made no sense to her.

During her unveiling, he quickly turned his back, only once more facing her when he was sure she was properly clothed. Listening to her words afterwards proved to be a bit more shocking than any removed shirt, but he listened, and nodded. There was no arguing against that logic, really.

"It wasn't that she was perfect for me," he tried. "It was that... she is so beautiful." Uttering the very word said it all. "And she deserves so much better. I could give it to her, I could have... but it was not to be."

And as if that was that, he extended his hand to her gathered things in a silent desire to carry them.
"And you are much the same. You deserve to be in a better environment and taken care of. I am not trying to come on to you in any way and am not asking or expecting or wanting any part of your body, just... trying to be kind where I never could be."

There was no smile upon his face, not even in his eyes. It was all just desperation. Damian just wanted to help.

Raquel looked at him for a long time, searching his eyes and picking his brain. After a moment, she sighed, stood, and lifted the guitar case, able to carry it on her back with a simple strap. "...The clothes I have...wouldn't be something you'd want a lady in your company to be wearing...I mean, for a lady of 'higher class'..." She added looking disdainfully at the ripped and reveling clothes on the floor. She looked back up to Damian with a strange smile on her face. Heading to the door, she stopped in front of him and patted his cheek gently. "You're moving me into compassion... I don't think I've ever felt that... You're different Damian Centurion. Maybe you can do some good for me." Her eyes softened as she said this, smiling a little. Something was indeed different about Damian. Something she couldn't place. She figured she'd go along with this 'charity' even if he didn't think of it that way. If it didn't work out she could always return to the streets where she felt she belonged. That was always waiting for her. With one last look over her shoulder, and one last half smile Damian's way, she walked out the door a little ways, extending her arm for him to join her.

Again, that charged feeling entered his skin. Damian followed her, enchanted for just a second before reminding himself he didn't actually know her.

As a gentleman did, he took her arm, and began walking her back to the hotel room. Goodness knows what would happen when he came back with this bruised and fascinating creature.

"I will buy you new ones," he said as they walked. "Ones that you want to wear. You do not have to look like you just walked out of the Ballroom, but if that is what you want... then that is what we will buy."

Buying, buying, that was all he did and knew how to do (or at least he thought so). In his first conscious effort to verbally express something like friendship, Damian said, "And I will be here for anything you need. I won't turn you into the cops, or doctors. I will pay you for what you lost tonight..."

Was there anything he had failed to address? "And I will be your friend. Employer, in a way, but friend nonetheless."

Raquel scoffed a little bit. Not in a disdaining way to him but just because she found this all so surreal and humorous. "A 'friend' huh?" She let the idea mull around her head for a moment. "Hm...well alright then. A friend. huh...If you're willing to risk it..." She joked. "I've had the worst luck at keeping and maintaining 'friends'..." She sighed, looking up at the sky which was growing a tad brighter.

"Lorey has, too," he said without thinking. "All of hers have gone away... except for Richard and I. Perhaps you could become their friend as well."

--

It was a rather normal walk back to the hotel room. Through the doors, in the elevator, ride it up and up until it stopped and opened up to another hallway. Damian once more pressed his finger to his lips before opening the door.

Pale morning light was starting to lighten the darkness here and there. Damian gently took Raquel's things from her to place on the kitchen table, where he saw a bottle of aspirin sitting, next to the soggy pile of ice.
"Here," he said, popping open the little bottle. Out came two little white pills, which he offered to Raquel. "They'll help the pain. I'll make you a better icepack, and you can sleep on the couch. It's rather nice."

It was so odd how... not pitiful, but overly concerned he sounded as he fussed. Damian hardly seemed like the same person anymore, and all because he had someone to dote upon.

Raquel took the pills thankfully, hoping her cheek would soon stop aching. Though in stead of heading to the couch, she turned to Damian and cocked her head once more, obviously about to ask a question. "So I've been thinking..." She said quietly, so as not to disturb the others. "I know you're my 'friend' now...and you're hiring me to 'be with you'? So...does that mean I act like you're girl friend or something?" She asked blatantly, honestly wanting to know if that was her part to play or not. she didn't mention however how she wouldn't mind it at all. She was curious to see what it was like to be 'paired off' with some one.

"Not in so many words..." Though the odd redness brought to his cheeks gave him away. "I would only put my arm about you. Whatever you are comfortable with. It is more just so that I don't seem utterly alone and in bad company. It sounds terrible, and I am not proud, but I cannot have people thinking anything is out of place."

He would take her to dinner every now and then, walk in the park with her... but behind the scenes, he promised himself he would take care of her. Damian needed a stranger to play this part so no one would ask questions, and yet he kept finding himself feeling so guilty that he almost wished he had went out to find an older acquaintance.

As a distraction, he fished a bottle of water out of the fridge and handed it to her, as she had taken the pills without any water at all.
"Here. We'll discuss everything once you wake up. If you need anything, just call for me. For all you're agreeing to do, I owe you the world."

As this conversation was taking place, Lorey was beginning to stir. She had always risen with the sun for as long as she could remember, but this time, she knew she had no job to go to. There was only a marvelously comfortable bed, the kind she dreamed of having... there was warmth as well, found in the arms of a man she loved. She hadn't had that kind of warmth and security in years. Fearing it would all go away in some kind of waking dream, Lorey stayed put, right where she was. Richard's arms were around her anyhow. Not that she minded, but moving would be difficult without waking him.

"That's more than fine with me." She nodded, taking the water. She was feeling a tad tired since she usually did sleep during the day as it was. She was about to go lie down when she stopped, and turned to Damian. She looked puzzled, then leaned up and kissed him softly on the corner of his mouth. She lingered but only for a moment before she pulled back and looked at him shyly, as if asking if that was ok. "Um...Yea, i ..um.." Her face turned a little red but she quickly shrugged it off. "That's how a girlfriend thanks her boyfriend right?" She asked, slightly unnerved at herself. She stepped back and shrugged casually, smiling a bit. "Erm...I'll learn it up as we go." She promised before turning to go rest a bit. She headed to the couch, only to trip on a rather large boot on the floor. She spun around embarassed but smiled at him and mouthed 'sorry' before getting the chance to lay herself down on the couch.

He stood stock-still as her soft lips kissed his face, and it wasn't until he found himself giving a laugh that he realized he'd been holding his breath. Damian still seemed wracked with grief and a strange desperation, but at least he had found someone to focus that care on. Lorey had Richard... and he would have Raquel, though not quite. There was always a catch there.

In the silence of the room, Damian heaved a very deep but soft sigh. Where were the blankets? he wondered. Usually there was an extra one in a utility closet somewhere. He went off to find that, still light-headed from that soft little kiss.

Lorey, though, was sitting in bed, utterly confused. Who was the female she had just heard and seen go to the couch? And why was she bruised so on her face? And just what was going on? Honestly, it seemed a few hours couldn't go by without something happening, and nothing ever good.

Richard sighed deeply finding himself stirring a bit. For a brief moment, he felt like he was back home, and that the last dozen or more years had been a dream. He was about to kiss his Rose good morning...when it hit him. He hadn't been dreaming. He was in a hotel room downtown in Veratia, and he wonderful bundle of pureness in his arms was not his Rose...It was Lorey. Though he didn't mind that at all. Smiling he kissed the back of her neck and whispered good morning as he hugged her a bit tighter.

Raquel on the other hand was just saying goodnight. She was asleep as soon as she shut her eyes. She had never been able to sleep so soundly. Usually because she could never be sure if she were really safe at night. But the idea of Damian being close by and having a solid roof over her head, she couldn't help but feel safe.
PostPosted: Thu Mar 05, 2009 7:50 pm

Lorey turned upon her back in her lazy morning way. Good morning, she whispered back, and kissed him upon his forehead. Would she tell him? Better wait a few more minutes, she reasoned, before telling Richard that there was yet another guest in the room. Lorey kept her quiet voice next to his ear, so as not to wake the poor girl.
"I haven't woken up like this... ever. Or felt safe like that since my mom."

As Lorey and Richard gently woke up, Damian kept to his word. First he fished out a wash cloth from the bathroom, and found a rubber band in a drawer by the phone. Then came the ice to make it a proper ice pack. All was safely tucked inside, tied off on the top, and ready to be used in case the pain woke Raquel up. Next came the thinner blanket that he found in the closet where coats were kept. It was a bit scratchy, and an unattractive yellow color, but it would keep her warm in the slight air conditioning.

Damian practically tiptoed over to where she was upon the couch. Carefully he threw that blanket over her, making sure her hands and feet were covered. The icepack was placed on the table in arm's reach just in case. It was all he could do for her at that time... everything else would have to wait.

Richard smiled at her, glad to hear how happy she was even if jstu for a moment. He then stretched and reluctantly stood up seeing Damian already up and at 'em. He was about to say goodmorning when he noticed an unfamiliar lump laying covered on the couch. He soon realized it was a girl, a battered one at that. He shot Damian a look and flinched his head toward the kitchen so as to have a word with him. "What exactly were you up to last night?" He demanded to know, all sorts of possibilities pouring into his head, none of which pleasant.
