Curly aka Jerome Lester Horwitz was the youngest of 5 boys.. he was most defiantly male.
like before I said he fell sick... he had a stroke after the 97th episode. Was then replaced by his older brother shemp.

hmmmm... it seems shemp was an original stooge! after leaving, curly joined the crew for their club appearances. soon after that, they started makin their films.
