woe - no, people are just broke during the holidays. i think it's one of the worst times to offer up commissions. everyone opens commissions during the holidays too, which doesn't help.

no one ever reads 2 pages worth of rules, but it's difficult dealing with people who are unfamiliar with things we are totally familiar with. some people don't know basic things like "a trade has to be sent before your order is accepted" or "no pornographic images" or "no mecha [which not everyone is against doing, but maybe 80% of people here are]" or "full artistic license / no specific poses" and all that typical stuff. it IS wasted space, but every once in a while you come across two or three lost souls who ask you to draw their naked naruto "inspired" (ripped) oc with 4 testicles and 500 lbs of armor on his calves in a dance-inspired pose.
and there you are rule-less explaining to them what you can and can't do. WHAT A PREDICAMENT!
on a side note:
i have been noticing this a lot lately, especially with new gaian artists. it sucks when an auction's freebies look better than the person's finished samples. how does that work exactly? it's so strange.

I haaate doing freebies for auctions, I always end up owing like 500 freebies and the winning bid will be like, under 10k.

Who made freebies an official auction rule anyway? x.x I think somewhere it started out to be nice, or attract more people... but by now I just see artists -suffer- from being expected to do them.

I offered them because I never have the time/attention to bump my own threads, hahah. But you have to make SO many rules for freebies to be worth doing. "Must make X many posts, posts must be X time apart" etc etc, or people will just binge-post like fourty pages worth of spam in half an hour, and you're still stuck with nobody bidding.

Yeha, it's a careful thing w/ freebies - usually I do them for bumpers because I don't like bumping myself. But damn, yeah, you can be exploited sometimes.

Do people expect freebies? I don't hang around too many auction threads, and when I do I usually make two posts before disappearing into the aether ... I do see people hanging around doing the wishful-thinking dance, but I've never seen anyone outright ask if there would be free art ... magaly ... but every once in a while you come across two or three lost souls who ask you to draw their naked naruto "inspired" (ripped) oc with 4 testicles and 500 lbs of armor on his calves in a dance-inspired pose. Oh, go on - you know you want to draw that (;

Oh, go on - you know you want to draw that (; Can't pinpoint when it's happened, but I'm pretyt sure it's happened in places I've been in... but that said, I've got another freebie horror story for y'all.... I dunno, but I was in this one auction - fantasy dumplings - with http://bw-inc.deviantart.com , http://kuroitora.deviantart.com , http://luciole.deviantart.com and http://look.deviantart.com ... and like, these was this one guy who was hanging out in the thread and bumping but then got really suepr excited when we started doing freebie games. Now, bw did a dice roll thing and kuroitora won (i mean, it was like, the five of us, the one guy, and two more people bumping the thread pretty much). So she drew Bianca, his character - very cute, sexy, full of awesome. Anyway, so I do a post-on-such-and-such-page game. And this bumper guy wins. I was like "What would you like me to draw? I'm not that good at drawing really cute characters, though." And he's like "but you drew such a pretty girl three pages back!". And that's when Kuroitora booted him from the thread. XD I think there was also some point when he forgot Luciole was in the auction, too. Hell, but as I said - I don't think he was there because of us. Only because we were doing a lot of freebie games.

RE: Bizzare weird things nobody wants to draw, I only do those in squiggly form, because, I dunno. I've always been a bit disappointed that I never got any REALLY weird squiggly orders, considering their sales pitch says I'll do squiggly furniture or the readers mother, etc.
The weirdest one I got was a naked, winged, striped, dinosaur woman. = Awesome.
