I love playing the flute heart I just recently got moved down from 2nd chair to 3rd. Probably 'cause my tones sucks compared to the 2nd chair flutist (who talks about me behind my back and then acts all nice towards me like she's never done that before stare ). For All District Band, I'm 4th chair in the Concert Band and she's 2nd chair and I forgot what band she made sweatdrop
So I have one question, does anyone have ideas on producing a better tone? Also tips on hitting a high E, high F#, and high A would be appreciated 3nodding I can hit high E flat, high F, and high G just fine, but when it comes to those notes I always have problems. Please PM these tips. Thanks blaugh

I feel a little downgraded here, I play so many instruments... including a brass and string. However I learned the flute from my sister, who's first flute in Symphonic band (whereas I'm in the Wind Emsemble), and that was two, maybe three years ago. I'm not too bad at it, since I play about every other day, but I don't play it in school. I play only my brass or string instrument there.

Just don't blow all the way into the hole. That would sound... off. I have to work with just theory since my flute's in the shop for some repairs... a spring broke... sweatdrop

Hii. <333
I play flute. Most of the other flute players I know /play with are kind of like me. They're loud, proud, athletic, and have a strong passion for their instrumental talents.

I used to mostly blow in, but now I blow across and I sound so much better.

I have a feeling that I made first chair of the All State band. I'm really depressed. I really wanted to make orchestra (the way it goes here is that the highest score gets to choose between band and orchestra, and based on that, they put every other flute into orchestra until they have as many as they need, which is usually two). My reasons for thinking this are; my friend Nick got first chair clarinet, and they called over a WEEK ago to ask if he wanted orchestra or band, and my other reason is that last week they called my band director and asked her to ask me if I would play piccolo for any of the pieces, and if no piccolos make it, they always ask the first chair person. So I think Katie (she goes to a different school, but she's first chair in a private wind ensemble we're in, and I got second chair but they put me on piccolo) got first chair, and chose orchestra, so I got first chair band. Man, i'm so depressed.... I wanted first chair of everything.

I didn't even make the first part; I'm a 2nd (for the first time like..ever =/) I understand how you feel, though. Cheer up though, there's always a next time. =)
What is orchestral music like? I've never played with an orchestra and haven't dwelled too deeply into it during my lessons.

What is orchestral music like? I've never played with an orchestra and haven't dwelled too deeply into it during my lessons. Orchestral music can be fun. But I recently played Beethoven's Lenore Overture No. 3, and it was the most boring thing in the world. It was basically like, play 20 measures, rest 150. Plus a ton of it is a flute solo, and I wasn't playing principal flute (the girl who I predicted got first chair all state orchestra, and did ((i found out today, my predictions were correct))) was, so she got all the solos. But the parts we did play were fun. I'm also playing Peter and the Wolf currently, and that's an AWESOME piece. And i'm playing the Firebird Suite, which is fun, but is alot of just fast runs, which people seem to think is the only thing the flute is good for.

My sister (who taught me) was taught to get the low notes to sound more like an oboe's by blowing in, and thus good tone would be achieved. If you can't get a note and the rest of your scale is fine, there might be a spring problem. And I would know, seeing as my sis is a bit careless sometimes when it comes to her insrument, so she turns to me for certain things. Also, I was given a bad flute to learn with... I'm getting a better one for Christmas.

I'll be practicing getting a better tone over the Christmas break 3nodding Then when I get back and take my chair test (hopefully we'll have a chair test), I will regain my spot as 2nd chair! Or I could possibly be 1st... Being 1st chair is a dream right now xd
