Who are these "names", anyway? Are they actually any good? I've never really hung around the art forums ... ever - what a bad art whore, I am.

Some "names" warrant the attention, some are okay, some are IMHO pretty boring. Magaly is an example of someone with a "big name", as she indicated in her post already. I'd hate to offend anyone by listing off people who I think are popularized like that though :@
Coming in second place to "big names" are "chibi artists", kheh. "Hi pls pay 70k for my 10-minute no detail chibi with HUGE ANIME EYES."

magaly NinjaKana I love your art! I agree that 30k is really reasonable, but maybe start at 20k until your more farmiliar around gaia, wink Very nice though!

yeah the pricing forum is noobs pricing other noobs, tru dat ;i.
i think i used it once out of curiosity almost a year ago if i remember correctly. the highest i got for a sketch was i think 70k, but most people stayed under 10k.
i like opening shops on my mules. it takes 4 times longer to get someone just to even come in and say "good luck" than if i use my main. crazy. on my main i can open a shop with one slot and get it filled in less than 3-10 posts, never on a mule. people just like names and saying they have something that person did for whatever reason. i don't think it has much to do with actual quality. i've seen people proudly display really bad/old sketches of people with "names" and go around just saying "look i have a soandso". it can look like chicken scratch and they don't care. pretty nuts. :3
Lol. Agreed man. I've tried a couple of those disguised shops, too. I'd say I'm a middling name. People know who I am, but I'm not someone who everyone will pay a huge amount for. You know, that whole not drawing people with huge eyes is sometimes a hindrance. And the having-no-time-to-color and not-coloring-with-super-shiny colors. Lol. Little do people know, but I have Ramy art from when we were in tenth grade! *gaspshock* But yeah, to back up that quality thing - it a big artist does really small crappy sketches for cheap, people will buy them sometimes just to say they have work from them. It was kind of like that when PB was offering headshots on Menewsha. They were taking her 10 minutes, and people were paying large prices for them - just because PB art would be so hard to get on Gaia. Lol. It's easy to keep a facade on the internet. Just rant to someone on MSN and type a kind of "oo *noobyd spacey look*" phrase into the list box, lol. I mean, the n00blets are giving me DA pageviews after all... >.>; XD I need to figure out when to kind of reveal myself. But I think a couple of my R/C buddies picked up on it and are watching/bumping, too. I had to PM j.spork and be like "shhhh ;3" - DeZarin also stopped by. It's even funnier - the pricing thing, cuz i've got a huge big-name shop in my sig... and I'm in it, and managing it, LOL. That's how I feel I got my name on Gaia though - not through style or skill or attitude, but by simply knowing all these other, more popular artists and people thinking "hey, she's decent at least, and I want a set" ... kinda sucks. Granted, I know a lot of people like my work, and I'm really thankful for that - but it's not something targeted marketed towards anime-infused folk. One day, I want someone I randomly meet IRL to be like "holy crap, you're fongmingyun" (and not be one of my online buddies already). I't happened like twice at cons (but the "holy crap! you're prodigybombay!" has happened more often. ... this is what you get when you share con tables. and your more popular partner goes to the bathroom) Jjak/HInabi said it happened to her on the train the other day. Ramy said it happened in his high school. XD lol. I want to have a freaky experience, too...!

Hahah I'm pretty sure I'm basically a nobody on Gaia. Like select people know who I am, but only through OGAWG or DYBIM and not actually through ... you know. The R&C or anything. Granted the last auction I tried to hold was a year ago. It was a big group auction with like DeZarin and Earthkid in it, as well as four really stupendous people I know from off gaia .. and, I mean, sure, it probably more-or-less bombed because it was an auction specifically for non-bishounen-man art, but ... I can't help but feel that my absolute lack of "fame" or w/e contributed. Like maybe if I had Earthkid make the first post it would have done better, hahah.

oh there are so many!
most of them do anime or chibi work. big names on gaia are people like luciole, Prodigy Bombay, roxbaby, cheshire, kiriko, woe is big and doesn't realize it obviously haha. there's rarely any additions to the "big names list", it's pretty set. even if someone is gone for a long time, people still remember them and would pay more than they would before for their work.
the people i listed are actually really good and super nice. there are some others that are big names by association and another group that's for unknown reasons. sometimes a person's reputation is bigger than their actual work and a lot of times they are huge self-absorbed jackasses. both scenarios are a little disappointing. though, i think i prefer the self-absorbed jackasses over the whinny teenagers. i don't know which i'd shoot first. maybe i'd flip a coin.
woe - it's hard for any of us to weight ourselves against PB. just judging by her DA popularity, she is a superstar. i still think you're both pretty fab ladiez. cool

Gaia is just so... historic to me. I used to be really well known around the exchange, R&C and Q&A. No really, I'm serious. I got newbie fans and lots of PMs and requests and everything. I've even contributed to a bunch of stickies. But on the other hand the only people -I- remember are from ages ago as well. Like SaturnAlice would dominate the top in the art arena.
But you know, things change, people get hacked. I quit really posting in the forums like... 2 years ago? And this is basically the only guild I'm still active in. I get my art through PMs.

Lol. I don't consider myself a big name because I haven't hit the frontpage of DA yet, haha. But even if it is name, it's always going to bother me whether I got it for my own skill or because they know me for knowing someone else.

In any case, I think you're popular and I think people are afraid to talk to you - you kick arse far too much and you're against so many of the things that people love (and which are obnoxious - like the so-called word "arts"). You're instantly recognisable by style - I would say the same for Woe, as well. I didn't realise any of those names (apart from PB) were "names" ...

I didn't realize Kiriko was active enough on Gaia to be considered a "big name" here still hahahah.
Anyway, Woe, er. I'd say that popularity in most cases feeds itself. Originally you were popular with, (this is horrible to put it this way but) high-society people with actual taste to speak of. That is, people who really like traditional mediums, and have some actual sense about what is and isn't a skillful piece of work.
However.
The lower class will of course mimic the higher class, and THEY, the lower class, are only interested because they want artwork "by that person who drew $bigartwhorename."
As the "upper class" dies out or becomes more reclusive, the "lower class" sustains the popularity for "the wrong reasons."
