[rant]Understandably so. As much as computers become increasingly *cringe*"user-friendly"*cringe*, the complexity and volume of information the average user must know is ludicrous. I used to be a master of doing anything that needed tweaking in Windows XP. Now with Vista and then 7 (and 8 coming along in 2 years), I find it difficult to keep up with the knowhow. Of course, it doesn't help that Microsoft has made some erribly bad dcisions regading intuitive menu design. Worst of all, Microsoft seems to enjoy, with each successive version of Windows, bury the useful features and settings so deeply under the "helpful" garbage that one needs internet tutorials in order to find out how to do things. And it isn't that Microsoft is trying to prevent inexperienced users from screwing up with computer, because it is still far too simple to genuinely destroy your installation of Windows. They also need to take more time to develop an OS and release fewer. The gap after XP was marvelous. I will agree that i dragged on a bit too long after a while (in the area of 64-bit support especially), but Vista is the result of Microsoft getting to comfortable. Honestly, the biggest problem with Microsoft is the change in focus that happened some time between XP and Vista. With all the versions of Windows up to XP, Microsoft focused on making their OS slim, efficient, and business-oriented. That the consumer market used the products as well was just a bonus. With Vista, Microsoft geared it toward users and forsaked businesses (their real cash cows). I can understand that they were attempting to keep up with Apple (not like they were gaining much market share anyway), but listening to the masses all the time is ignorance. On a mass scale, people often don't truly realize what they wnt when weighed with factors they don't colectively fully understand. They can't comprehend that nearly demanding Microsoft make a "pretty" OS like Apple takes valuable development time away from refining the NT kernel and basic operations. As a result, Microsoft gave the masses what they asked for, bloated Vista. And (in true mass fashion) once the masses saw the results of what they had asked for, they threw it in Microsoft's face and blamed them! Now, Microsoft is to blame for being so naive, but I guess expecting the masses to possess any amount of introspection is asking for a miracle.[/rant]

Well, I certainly got carried away there...
Nearly became a political rant, eh?

THIS.

THIIIIIIIIIIS.

I actually grew up using Windows 3, and Windows 2000. They're the reason that out of habit, I don't leave spaces in my file names - all one word, or with underscores. I just missed the generation that installed games from floppy disks, but I was there for the early versions of MS paint, for the old Windows logo and startup tune, I remember the old blue/white/yellow defrag screen, being only allowed to go online when supervised and for short times, because dial-up put the house phone line on hold....

Ooooh, I feel nostalgic.

The days of DOS and Windows 95/98 were good times, no matter how buggy they were. Not to mention some games (mostly DOS games) won't even run on anything newer than 98. Ah, I remember when SoundBlaster cards reigned as king!

I remember struggling to play through Commander Keen...

The Lemmings games were my big DOS games. Those and the 2 Mega Man games for PC (terribly awful games, but fun nonetheless). I've played a lot of the DOS "classics", but I was too young at the time to really enjoy or appreciate them. Can a 5-year-old really be expected to fully grasp Master of Magic?

Thankfully, DOS Box provides great DOS emulaion, and most of those old games have become freely-downloadable abandonware.

A friend of mine told me it was fiendish to let her start playing the megaman series on that one. He is into Mega the same way I am into Transformers. burning_eyes

Oh, that is a tough one to start out on. I believe I played them all in order, though I certainly didn't beat them in order.

MM6 is considered to be the easiest in the classic series, but starting with any game after 2/3 might make thse first few games' lack of sliding/charging seem inbearable.

Well, at least you didn't start her on 2 or 9. It's a toss-up between those as to which is the hardest.

The Mega Man franchise is one of my favorite, but my inner fanboy is geared toward Sega. mrgreen

Always get powerups that go boom. I found Mega 8 to be truly easy once you get the right powerups. For instance, the "Arrow Shot" was a favorite. When a buster shot hits, it recoils, and becomes spreadfire on impact.

I too enjoyed the ability to change how your charge shot acted. Sadly, there were never enough bolts in the game to get every upgrade.
I loved that game's inclusion of the Mega Ball. I guess they realized it was too versatile, because it didn't show up in any other games (with the exception of Capcom's vs. series).

MM9's weapons were far too epic, but MM10's are more balanced. I also apprecate how MM10's weapons have such unique auxilliary uses that can even change the way you platform. The Wheel Cutter specifically comes to mind. Normally this weapon revs up for a second then takes off, scaling any terrain it comes across. However, if you are standing close to a wall and hold down the fire button, Mega will go up the wall as well.

Nice video!

At least the meme of fitting the Fresh Prince of Bel Air rap to various non-vocal music hasn't yet reached the MM2 anthem.

Nevermind the application of rap to anything... *attempts to hold back his hatred of rap*
