Sorry to hear about that, Audley. I've had that happen before so now I don't accept the trade until I get a watermarked copy of the art at least. I'm pretty trustful so usually get the art completed without a watermark. Then, I accept the trade to complete the commission process.

Yay for new rankings! I probably need an update.

Jesus on a stick, the "now leaving Gaia Online" alert just got a lot more glaring. I mean. Gosh, was that really necessary? I ... just, wow.

Well, anyway. More practical/reasonable/non-rhetorical enquiries ...

Say you and someone agree to a commission some period of time ago. Say this is a real long time ago, and it's been over a year since you've heard from them about it, and you have a ... lot of pending trades like this clogging up your trade list.

Is it really poor form to cancel them? ;_; I mean, over a year is a while. I seriously doubt I am ever going to see these pictures and I don't hold that against these people but ... it's also kind of shitty to just have your gold tied up for like 2+ years in some cases, yeah?

Yes, it was really necessary, sadly. sweatdrop

I cancel them. Actually, I'll usually drop them a PM or post-stalk them a little to see if they're taking new commissions--which probably means they have no intention of finishing mine. If I get no reply, or see they're doing other things instead, I cancel. If they do come back an finish eventually, you can always restart the trade...and if you don't have the gold when they do, well, you waited over a year for your art, I guess they'll just have to wait a little while for their payment.

Please note, these are my personal views, not the views of a moderator--though, I don't think you could get in trouble unless the last scenario happened and the artist got all pissed and reported you for taking the art without payment...but really, even then I don't know how much ground they'd have to stand on.

Okay, thanks Rae. I'll send around some PMs. Some of these I've tried sending PMs before and got no answers, others have just kind of been leering at me silently.
But some people get so upset about getting PMs from "omg u are not on my friends list!!!!!" or whatever so I always feel really intimidated about sending PMs on Gaia. ;_;

Edit: okay so I don't think I will send PMs to people whose names were changed to gobbleygarbage and have deleted avatars...

The last time I sent "hey, what's the deal ...?" (but, you know, worded very politely and not featuring the words "hey" or "deal") messages the ones who cancelled didn't bother to reply - they cancelled on their end and that was it.

Fortunately, I no longer remember their names so it's hard for me to focus my eye rolling (;

Hahaha. Well, some good came of this! Artist was having trouble with the specific character due to stylistic changes on their end over the progressed time since trade conception, but was embarrassed about how deng long it'd been, so I set'm up with a different character.
Wooo.

i know i was one of those pending artists. FOR SHAME!!!
when i do that, i'm usually the person to cancel and whatever i got done the person can keep for free. it seems fair to me.

on the artist's side of things, i just lose interest in gaia sometimes and don't even bother logging on so gaian commissions are kept on the back burner. i know a lot of people are the same way. unless someone specifically tells me "hey, give me updates once in a while" - i don't do it at all. i don't mind receiving PMs as long as they aren't rude bc even though i both buy and sell art here i still believe that it's essentially a free service and you can't treat people like you're paying them big money for it. i am a little more nonchalant about the whole thing because i live off freelance work i suppose.

on the commissioner's side of things - i have one 2 year old trade for an OMG, another for an AFK and a third for a little over 1mil. i am hesitant to cancel because all 3 artists are really really hard to commission and are fairly inactive here. for me, a time frame depends on who it is. if it's a shop commission from someone i think is good but i'm not crazy about i don't mind canceling after 6 months.

Hahah yeah, I agree Magaly. Gaia money isn't really good for a whole lot. It's like a really convoluted art trade, where you aren't obligated to want a picture from the person who wants it from you.
PostPosted: Sat Nov 17, 2007 10:01 pm

Yeah, I usually go with what Galy does. I mean, most of the artists I know I somehow know RL, too - either via someone else, or whatever - and it's never good to let Gaia ******** you up so bad something real's ruined.

Sure, gold isn't "real", but the time it takes to acquire it (for some people - not all) definitely is. That's part of why it has a lot of value (perhaps more than it should) to users of this site - they worked hard for it (or they think they did).

Unrelated, but if anyone is looking for gallery software and hasn't heard of zenphoto yet, well ... here I am mentioning it. I heard about it a long time ago, but I'm such a slacker I didn't install it until a few days ago - my gallery in progress is here. It's quite simple to install and - joy of joys - thumbnail creation is automatic.

Does that mean you're not going to be using the lightbox anymore on your normal website? I liked the way you had that set up~

I do the same as magaly as an artist, sometimes when I can't do the commission in a timely manner I'll let them know and cancel the trade. Sometimes with the possibility that I might finish it in the future for free.

I think if they haven't responded to messages but are still active, or haven't logged on in a long time it's fair to just cancel the trades.

For some artists, I wouldn't mind waiting forever with the trade sitting there. If it's a really amazing artist I'd rather wait with the possibility of getting the commission.

Ill try to let someone know up front that their commission will probably take around a month when they commission me. Mainly because I have a LOT of responsibilities outside of gaia, and I spend 80% of my time awake at work. I don't have a lot of time to work on my commissions. Usually most people, especially dedicated art whores don't mind waiting. But once in awhile circumstances will be out of my control and Ill have to take longer on a commission. I try to keep in contact with the commissioner and let them know the status of their art. Ill even glady screencap the progress for them. If it take TOO long then Ill gladly give it to them for free, but too long for me is a lot longer then it is for a lot of people. x__x

I'm not sure - what I like about zenphoto is that I can just upload a folder and it's all thumbnailed out and just ... there. That said, I do enjoy lightbox and it's cool lightboxiness ...

Meanwhile, I updated my gallery so it looks like how it used to look - that was far less work than anything else (;
