Elnara knelt and plucked a leaf from one of the garden plants that was growing near the edge of the garden. Tearing it in half, she popped half of it into her mouth, then held the other piece out to Lore.
Naekeurtsl ... one of the most amazing plants in the entire Four Lands.

Lore took the piece from Elnara, nibbling on it a bit before popping the rest of it in his mouth. He was quite pleasently surprised at it's taste, and he had never seen a plant like it.
"It's very good," he murmured.

"I know," Elnara quipped smartly, grinning. "It's one of those things that I miss most about here. You think it's good like this? You should try it cooked."
Idhril was trying to reach for her own piece, and Elnara handed her a bit. She munched on it happily and lay her head on Elnara's shoulder.

Ulani led them further up the river, past the sleeping cat and the clump of bushes, and nodded at the house that loomed on their left.
"That's where Ulrich's parents lived, about three thousand years ago," she told them. "They're long gone, and the house was actually starting to fall apart until recently. But Beregond's been fixing it up for himself, and Ulrich has been helping occasionally."
She turned to Lore and explained, "Beregond is my neice's son, they live up on the mountainside." She pointed to one of the northern mountains to show him.

Lore couldn't help but eye the sleeping cat, though seeing the other house interested him as well. That was quite an old house, most would have to rebuild it, not repair it. Then again for all he knew it had been rebuilt before...
"I see..." he murmured softly.
And there were other people living in the area, though farther away.

"How old is he now?" Elnara asked curiously. "I think he was maybe fourteen when last I was here ..."
And if he was fixing up the house for himself, then she wondered if there wasn't a reason for him to do so, besides getting out from under his parents' roof.

"He's going on twenty now," Ulani smiled. "And once the house is ready, he's planning on traveling to some of the towns south of Chansond'eau. He's been talking about starting a family of his own, but he wants to be ready for it first."

Lore nodded at that, that sounded about right. Most would start trying to find families at that time wouldn't they? He hadn't thought about it that way, after all he was much older than that....

"Wow," Elnara murmured. "I hadn't really realized how much time had passed here ... that would mean that I've been gone for ..."
She did the math in her head and was amazed at the answer she got.
"Twenty years ..."
Her entire life span so far. Which meant that she was supposed to be closer to the age she had thought her mother was.
Ouch.

"Indeed you have," Ulani nodded seriously, tucking the blanket around Aliya more firmly. "But things haven't changed much."
She pointed at a path that disappeared into the forest.
"My aunt and uncle's old house," she explained. "They're also long gone, and their house hasn't been kept up so it's mostly just ruins now. No one goes there anymore."

That sounded sad to him as he nodded and looked towards that direction. It sounded like there use to be plently of people here, but not anymore. He wondered what it was like with more people?

Elnara shifted Idhril to one arm and moved to walk right beside Lore so that she could take his hand. She hadn't met any of the people who had used to live here, but she knew that Ulani missed them. She thought it was a shame that none of them would ever meet again, and that there was no chance for communication between them.
"Is it dangerous there, in the ruins?" she asked.

Ulani shook her head negatively. "The roof's been gone for a few centuries already, and everything else about the house is sturdy," she explained. "We just don't like going there much. Even Amara doesn't, and she grew up in that house."
She paused thoughtfully. "I think it's a memory thing for her."

Lore nodded at that slowly, so he thought in several more decades if no one did anything the house might be gone. Unless there were bricks, then it would be many many more decades before it would disappear.
