There was a pang of jealousy through the irritation and grief Rep felt as he eyed Jordan touch Melvin on the shoulder. It was hard to think sensibly, hard to do anything with any degree of sense here. There was only an oppressive sadness and lack of self worth and the jealousy settled back into it once again.
He wasn't part of the sad scene in front of him, he wasn't really part of anything much these days, feeling like a spectator in a lot of his own life.
He just wanted to go home to Mask, to make sure he was still there.
Without saying anything he headed back towards the water he'd come from.

Grief wasn't a feeling Ever was completely familiar with; wasn't something he'd had much opportunity to experience. Loss was an old friend, but more of an ephemeral loss. He'd never had to deal with the death of a loved one, with weighing through memories of people half-forgotten, of putting his life back together around a hole that had been left behind.
It meant that the sensation, instead of driving him to his knees, was more like a sore tooth, something that he could poke and prod at through the nausea and try to put his mind right.
Melvin, on the other hand, seemed weigh down by it; it tugged at his shoulders, made his head droop. Others had changed similarly, stooped and quiet, voices dropped to a hush. Ever watched them he approached, a slight, thoughtful frown on his own lips.
"...I can take people back." His voice sounded too loud to his own ears in this mess; he had to swallow it down, head tipped to turn his attention from Melvin, who seemed not quite capable of making this decision right now, to Jordan. "I can't dive, but I could get people back to the infirmary for a bit of help."
He hesitated just a moment, and then nodded to Kim, too. "Her too."
As Ever moved to call out to others, along with Jordan and Al, Melvin stared at the artifact now heavy in his hands. It took everything not to start dry heaving on the shore, and exhausted, he moved back to the main group.
"Whoever wants to port home can do that." He said, his voice not holding the same volume and strength than it had at the start. "The rest of us will complete the mission with returning the artifact. We need off the island immediately." Before Creation decided they were even more ungrateful than he had alluded to moments ago.
Quote:
Decisions: Go Home: Your character can go with Ever's group and pendant back to the main island. There is no penalty for this. You have successfully helped with the mission, and your hard work is appreciated.
Go to Atlantis: If you have the will to continue, you can finish the last leg of the mission by diving to Atlantis with Melvin's group to return the artifact.
There are no rp point penalties for either options. Just decide what is IC for your character as there are options available.
At 12pm Midnight EST I will do an update to dive down to Atlantis. If you haven't done your rolls for swimming to Creation Island: You can still do so and reach the island and then make a decision.

Watching Kim hit the ground and the wailing that was taken up around her the teenager knew immediately that something had gone very, very wrong. Fatally wrong. People didn't scream like that because someone had gotten injured or you dropped something important.
Henry's hand grabbed at her own and she wondered if he noticed how hard he was squeezing. Someone was talking about taking a group back to the main island with the girl's body (her body!!!) and everything in the girl wanted to run for that bit of safety.
But they had fought to be here. Bled to be here. That girl had died to be here. The artifact had to be returned to Atlantis and if everyone bailed and went home now what would happen if Melvin failed? And she couldn't send him alone...
Stepping into Henry's line of vision she snapped fingers in front of his face to get his attention. "Hey. Look at me." She smiled, grim and afraid. "You can go home if you want. I...I gotta help. I don't really want to but I gotta. You know?"
Terry didn't seem to quite get that Kim was gone. Or perhaps he was only refusing to see it, trapped in the initial shock. She's dead, Jordan thought, and groped dully for a gentler way to say it, but Seren beat him to it. Who knew how Terry would take that, though?
He caught a glimpse of Rep turning away, moving toward the water, and ached to go after him, to seek comfort and offer comfort. But the grief and guilt insinuated themselves into his mind and heart in a low whisper of you don't deserve that.
If he was heading back to the island - Jordan hadn't planned to return now, he'd intended to complete the mission, but it seemed that it had fallen to him to see to the body. He was guiltily relieved when Ever spoke up, and he carefully picked up Kim's body to bring to Ever. "Thanks," he said, subdued, and to Terry he said, "You should go with her."

Melvin watched Ever gather those who would be returning back
"Everyone who is returning back, thank you. I'll see you all back on the island. Please don't stay here any longer. It's too dangerous."
Melvin moved over to Ever. "Try and get them to the infirmary. He'll need time. They'll take Kim." He whispered to Ever, looking over at Terry and Kim before turning away.
"We're heading down! Everyone follow me if you are coming. We need off this island pronto!" He called out.
On the shore, Melvin checked to make sure everyone knew how to secure their diving gear into place before waving them down. Entering the water, he pointed down, this time no longer resisting the water that had wanted to pull them under before. The waves overhead were rough and the ocean was darker now without the light of the sun, but the glow of the runics on their equipment offered some light and a way to follow the Life hunter down.
Further below, he lead them into a wide cave, the sides smoothed out by something large, and down down down at the end was a door. Melvin paused here, and as he approached, it's strange designs lit up blue, and he pushed it open. Diving through went into a large, dark chamber, and he gestured for them all to follow him up. What light there was before was gone, and no attempts at turning on your lights worked, but you manage to figure out which way is up. For a moment, it seemed there was no top, but then there the surface flickered above.
Breaking the surface, Melvin rose up onto a stone surface, pulling himself out of the pool they had come from. All around them other similar pools dotted the ground around them down to other places unkown.
At the end of the room was a door. Melvin pulled off his mask and waited for the group. "We're here."
Quote:
Going Under: Decisions are to be made. Hunters can now pendant back to the main island. The rest head down to Atlantis following Melvin. The currents are rough and hard to navigate, but with persistence you can make it down.
Rp your character diving with the group and arriving at Atlantis. As a note, you no longer have runic bandages or a weapon charge. All runic energy is now absorbed.
Seren gave Rhys a look of gratitude, though her eyes were still filled with the heartbreak she was feeling at the loss of her friend, and her hand slid up to rest on his for a moment, just accepting what little comfort he could offer, before focusing back on the situation.
She watched Jordan lift Kim's body, and said "Thank you... Thank you both..." She included the pale haired man she'd never met before in that thank you, then turned her eyes to the shore, unable to cope with the sight of her dead friend anymore. To Terry, she said "Jordan's... right... You should go with her..." Her voice shook, wondering if Terry hated her now for trying to make him see the truth.
She was trying hard to put her emotional mask back on, to hide how hurt she was. It wasn't working very well, but she kept trying.
When the instructions to get the equipment on came, she struggled a little, not an experience diver, but finally managed to get it all on. She followed Melvin into the water, her eyes blank, and then down.
With her thoughts trapped in this moment as they were, it felt like it took forever to get there. It felt like it took no time at all, too. She continued to follow Melvin, blindly putting faith in him at this moment. Part of her wondered if this was a stupid idea, but she refused to give in to that. When they finally emerged, she found a place to stand out of the way, pulling the mask off and wondering where to put the equipment. She didn't bother to even look around, when normally she'd have been burning up inside with curiosity at what the entrance to Atlantis would look like. She simply watched Melvin, waiting.

There was more relief in knowing that someone more experienced would be taking charge of those who wanted to get back to the island safely, so when he approached Rhys gave both Ever and Jordan a clap on the shoulder as well. "Thanks..." he said very quietly before moving past themm and toward the shore, right behind Seren. He hadn't meant to bypass Terry, but he had an inkling of what the guy was going through and he just couldn't bring himself to even try and comfort him...
His head still wasn't totally on straight, but leaving the island was the goal and that meant this sick, gut-wrenching grief would soon be going away and he was all for it. He followed Melvin's example and got his gear in order before diving down, still following his lead. The further they got from the island the more normal he really felt, which helped a lot since he was moving his head around a lot and checking to make sure nothing was picking off whoever was in their group. His eyes landed on Seren a number of times, each time relief pouring over him when he saw that she was still there. How "okay" she was, was a whole other question, though.
When eventually they surfaced he pulled his mask off and slicked his hair back to get it out of his face. He looked around a little curiously, but soon lost interest in what was all there and just kept his eyes on Melvin, waiting for what they needed to do next.

[Atlantis Party]
Al chose to go with Melvin, already suited up at this point for their inevitable dive. He also really really didn't want to go with the mourning party, just as much as, if not more than, he wanted to see Atlantis and hopefully an end to all this madness.
He put on his mask and followed Melvin through the inky darkness and back towards the light and fresh air. He crawled up alongside him on the rocks and pulled up his goggles to his forehead. Black hair slicked down around his face.
He looked at Melvin anxiously. Nuru was drained and he felt so very vulnerable aside as he sat by the blonde on the hard stony ground.
He wanted to ask what now but was aware Melvin probably didn't know any more than he did.

[ Atlantis Party ]
Grief was a rather unfamiliar feeling for Zeke. He'd never really lost anyone, let alone someone who was important to him. He could feel something weighing him down, recognized it as some kind of emotional baggage, but couldn't have placed a finger on exactly what it was. It left him standing beside Ever with a thoughtful frown on his face, a hand lifted to rest fingers against his temple as he tried to figure what exactly was happening.
Although, as he followed the Life over to where Melvin had stopped near the shore, he couldn't help but feel a small flicker of relief as Ever offered to head back, bringing with him...
She's dead?
{Looks that way, boil.
The frown deepened but not out of sadness for her, but for concern as to what had caused it. He hadn't seen the conversation beside the tree, and he hadn't seen what Creation had done. Only the aftermath. The lifeless girl who had started all this, and the apparent loved ones she was leaving behind.
He'd turn to Ever as Jordan approached with the body, and a dark hand wrapped loosely around the wrist that was missing a bracelet, offering a small squeeze. A silent request to be careful, even if it wasn't needed. Ever was a lot tougher than her looked. "I'll come find you when we get back."
Then he was heading towards the water, adjusting his gear, checking the tank. A last flick of a look, and then the mask was being drawn down and the regulator secured as he waded out into the water to follow Melvin.
The dive down was tricky. It was dark, they had to go through tunnels her knew to be dangerous, and head through a door that they weren't entirely sure was safe on the other side. Zeke concentrated on the swim, on his breathing, and on following Melvin until it was too dark to see properly. Then he was swimming up and up until he could feel air on his face. Dragging the regulator down, and the mask up, he grunted as he drew himself out of the water. "Is it always this dark?"

Oh, now he remembered what this feeling was. Grief. Crippling, choking grief. Like the sort he'd experienced when He and Olivia's parents had died. The sort of grief that had made it hard to breath, and had lingered for so long the young man had wondered if he'd ever really feel more than brief, fleeting moments of happiness again.
"Hey. Look at me."
He startled as Cami suddenly filled his vision, and the smile that followed her own was purely automatic and thoughtless. Just as tight as her own, just as nervous and strained, but there nonetheless. She was giving him an out, letting him know he could go back, but she was going forward regardless. She was going down there, and...
"No. I'm not going let you go down there alone." He knew why she had to keep going, he felt the same, but more than that, he couldn't go back without her. "I've got your back." He would have given her hand a squeeze, but he was only just realizing how hard he'd been holding it, and slowly uncurled his fingers. "Sorry..."
Getting all the equipment ready and strapped on proved to be a bit of a challenge, but he managed, eventually. Thigh deep in the water, he was fiddling with he regulator, mask on his head, before glancing at Cami. "Ready for this?" It was now or never, right?
How he managed to actually make it all the way to where they were going, he wasn't sure. At a certain point it'd gotten so dark he couldn't see even an inch in front of his own nose, but he'd found his way, and hurriedly scrambled up onto the rock, out of the water. Out of breath, again.

Thinking was difficult, some strong emotion he couldn't place threatening to get the better of him. If there had been anything in his stomach he would have surely wretched it all up as he turned over on the sand and dry heaved anyway.
I don't understand, he thought, with Lerna's uncertain hum vibrating back at him.
<The Island...> She replied, meekly. That worried him but he forced himself to focus on the woman with him.
"I don't---" His voice cut off, torn between a word and a gasp at the girl crumpling to the ground and then...
Green eyes squeezed shut and his hands grasped uselessly at the sand. He didn't know what Soleil was saying to him but he reached for her anyway. Or rather he opened his arms to her and let her fall into him.
Zane didn't recognize the girl, but he recognized Terry. "T--" the nickname died on his lips and he shook his head. No, no something was wrong and they were going to go...The girl had to be okay right?
To Soleil, he tried to put on a composed front even if he felt utterly drained. "Come on chickadee, we need to go help them with Atlantis." Maybe there they could actually do something.

He looked up from staring at the pool to look over at those who arrived. "We'll wait a moment for everyone to arrive. Atlantis stays powered longer with us around. I want as long as we can afford to speak with Sophie." He explained.
"It's dark until we approach the doors." He pointed over to a set of doors that were dormant at the moment. "Sophie first met us here. I don't want to get too close to the doors but she might appear soon." He glanced at the ground and walls.
The relief that came over Ever at being left behind was -- well, just a tiny bit embarrassing. Having a task that he could take over took away some of the sting of it, meant that he drew in a breath through his nose and looked down to Kim again limp in his arms. It took him a moment to steel himself, and then looked up at whoever stayed behind.
"Ready? We can all head to the infirmary together, to get looked over."
He'd wait until they were all there, all together, before speaking quietly into his pendant to send them home.
