And what a haul! Well, this was obviously a good idea. Alyx set off to find another node while contemplating the fact that in all of his harvesting, he'd only managed to get enough wood for three walls. Building a house was hard work in this game. But dammit if he wasn't going to do it. It would be hard work, yes, but it would be worth it. And when he was done, he would be one of the only people in the entire game able to say "Yeah. Yeah, I did that. I built that." And it would all be worth it in that moment. Yeah. He could handle it. Because he was, if nothing else, patient. This game had taught him, if nothing else, to be patient in order to get what he wanted.

And he would apparently need all of that patience now. That's okay, though. He didn't have too much longer before he had his new level and could leave to go on the adventure of a lifetime. He could imagine the battles and conquests to come with crystal clarity. He was lost in a world of imagination and it took him far away from the ennui of chopping wood ad infinitum. And that was alright by him. Anything that could take him away from his job as a lumberjack was a welcome distraction, and it wasn't like anything exciting was going to happen otherwise. He smiled as he thought of fighting and conquering a dragon, his shield held aloft as flames roared harmlessly around him.

Well. It's a good thing his imagination was vivid, because if he was out here to get enough wood for that last wall, he'd apparently be here for a while. But that's okay. What else did he have to do? In a world without responsibility, he was free to gallivant through the trees chopping wood and catching butterflies, as he fancied. And really, what more could you want? Purpose? Direction? Company? Bah! Why yearn for the company of man when you might keep the company of nature? Or something approximating nature. A collection of pixels that looked a lot like nature. Yeah. Yeah, that worked. A computer program that at least behaved a little like nature. And what better company was there than that to keep?

He smiled as he finally got another decent take. Three is always better than one, at any rate. And he'd never gotten better than four, so he figured that was the ceiling on gains from one node. So he'd gotten lucky this time, he knew. And for that he was thankful. With this, he had enough for the last wall he figured he would need for a basic house. But then again, he didn't really know. However, it wasn't just about walls now. He had floors to build. And you can't have a floor without wood. So he would have to continue. And this wood he was at least excited about. It was going toward something new, instead of the army of planks that he needed to form the barest shelter possible. This was polish on the house of his future, instead of just bare necessity.

And he was back to mediocre hauls. But that's okay. It was progress in the right direction, and he would never take that for granted. Progress was progress, and it not only brought him ever closer to his goal of a grand hall, but it brought him ever closer to his next level, and the overwhelming power that he could gain from those adventures that come next. And what an adventure it was sure to be. No one knew why they were where they were. No one knew why they had to push forward and breach the dungeon to free themselves from this place, but he was sure that that story would unfold, in time, and he would be on the forefront of that discovery. He would be responsible for unveiling the truth of this game to the world.

A decent take, to be sure. It was better than one, anyway. He treasured each unit of wood as he took it, painfully aware of how much work he had put into collecting this massive amount of pixels. Well, massive might be a bit of a strong word, but it was definitely not a minor amount. Compared to the work that it took to bring this much wood in, he figured that he was sitting on a sizable wealth of crafting supplies, and he figured that if there was a marketplace in the system, he could make quite a bit of money selling the sweat of his brow. But he could never sell his precious crafting supplies. As a carpenter, all creations started here; at wood. Or at least that's what he suspected. And with wood, he was capable of crafting so much. It was too personally valuable to him to sell to anyone who did not want it enough to harvest it themselves.

Two more pieces. Just four more pieces now and he'd have enough for the floor. And then all he'd need is a ceiling. He guessed. He didn't really know how this worked. To his knowledge, no one had built a house, because no one could afford to buy the land upon which they would build a house. It was moderately expensive, and by moderately expensive, he really meant ludicrously out of his price range. He could double his money and still not have enough to buy that plot of land. But that's okay, because he figured that money would come, in time. If there was one thing he always had enough of in games, it was money. he spent so much time doing quests and farming mobs that he would amass incredible fortunes that served as testament to his insanity.

Outstanding! Another excellent haul, and with that he had enough to finally build the floor of his home. He knew that he would probably have to expand on all these things, and thus would require more building materials, so he settled in to harvest more of those until he leveled up, because, again, as a carpenter, he was almost positive that he could not have enough wood. And besides, he was actually starting to enjoy this. It was cathartic, in a way, to not be in a constant struggle for one's life. To relax and just put some work in to making the world a better place. For him. A better place for him. He would build this house, and the world would be better for him and his friends. Friends. What friends? Well. It would be better for him, at least.

And another one! Man, he was hitting the jackpot today. With each node taking a couple minutes to find, and then each taking time itself to harvest, this was not a very fast process, and Alyxandeyr was overjoyed when it worked out that he got a huge haul. Sure, it averaged out to be about two units per harvest, but no one could argue that hitting it big once in a while was an awesome feeling. That small rush was enough to keep you going for a while, and the hopeful anticipation that you had each time you harvested a node was pleasant, in and of itself. So Alyx would continue. He still had a little bit to go before he leveled anyway, so what was the harm in continuing?

YES! Another critical success. How was he getting this lucky? He decided that as long as this hot streak was going, he would continue, no matter what. Because what else was there to do? Save the world? Oh, yeah. He'd get right on that, solo missioning away all the bad men and monsters of the world until people could safely live in the game that he had beaten by himself. On the plus side, he was sure that he would get a lot of titles that way. On the downside, there was the fact that he would have to go through the entire game as a lonely soul, and, not to be melodramatic or anything, but that just didn't sound altogether pleasant. Alyx was getting lonely, and it was starting to sink in just how little human contact he'd had lately.

Aaaand... Lucky streak officially over. Alyx was done. He put away his axe and picked himself up ready to go back to town and resupply for the mission to come. He did not know what was going to happen, but he knew that it was going to be harder than anything he'd done so far. More dangerous than all of his training and all of his practicing up to this point. He was ready. He just wanted to go back and make sure that all his ducks were in a row before he ventured out into the great unknown to be slaughtered by some unbelievable monster or another. He had no illusions; he would, as a solo player, most likely meet something that would kill him. The only option he'd have in that situation is to spiderweb smash and run away as fast as he possibly could.

Luckily, it was no secret which way the dungeon lay, so he simply set a course and began to follow the path. As he walked, he was prepared for anything, but after a while he just let his guard down. It was disappointing. he'd been walking for some time without so much as a whisper on the wind. Suddenly, he hears a grunting sound from low in the bushes at the side of the road, and he is ambushed by three boars! Alyx raises his shield in preparation for the assault, but does not have time to draw his weapon, so sudden was their attack. He was surprised, yes, but he was not scared. It's not like he hadn't taken down a superboar already. These were just a few regular, run-of-the-mill pests for him to deal with. He readied his blade, pointing it toward the boar closest to him, and watched carefully as the three animals prepared to charge him again. Name: Rampaging Rabbits! Questgiver: Beastmaster Prerequisites: None Objectives: spend 1 post spreading bait for the rabbits to put them back in their pen. Rewards:+1 Beastmaster
You come upon a man surrounded by an army of rabbits, all hopping and walking in different directions. He appears to be attempting to herd them back through the door of a pen that has been left open. He notices you and looks at you entreatingly. "Oh no! Oh no! Get back in the pen, pretties. You're not supposed to be out here! You! You, help me, please! I'm able to keep them from running off, but only just. Can you grab some of their food and spread it in their pen? I'm sure it will lure them back in!
Gloomwood. Why was everyone here? Where was 'here', anyway? What was going to happen to them? Bourtai wasn't sure if anyone new, but she knew she was going to find out. Somehow. She looked about her, quietly taking in the surroundings. There were so many different kinds of people and creatures here. Dwarves, rabbits, elves, humans, rabbits, fauns, werewolves, and...GOD, WHERE WERE ALL THE RABBITS COMING FROM??? They were just everywhere. Thousands of them. Bourtai finally caught sight of a helpless looking man, desperately trying to herd the legion of rodents into an open pen. She slowly made her way towards him, trying not to trip on the milling, hopping balls of fuzz that covered half the campground. Finally reaching the hutch, she quickly took some feed from an open bag at the man's feet and spread it on the ground inside. The wide ocean of rabbits, smelling the food, quickly became a squealing, writhing mass, running over each each other in the direction of the hutch with only one intent: supper. Not five minutes later, the door of the hutch closed as the last rabbit ran inside.
