Zach shifted his weight a little as he straightened up more. His frill flared slightly, another unconscious gesture that wasn't even defensive so much as a display of dominance. It wasn't something he thought about. Giving every impression of seeming bigger than Alec was just important.

"I see," he remarked flatly, staring at Alec just a second too long. He switched his attention to the nearby jungle with a quick turn of his head. As far as he was concerned, Alec had knocked her up and had tried to unload the blame on him. While he felt above the petty actions of the other islanders, he was not above petty dislike. It just made it even less guilt-inducing to use the teen to gather information. He was actually starting to enjoy this minute amount of power over others. While he wasn't going to do anything himself, that didn't seem to be a huge obstruction to getting his way when he deserved it.

His went from quietly flicking to curling in worry. Anything involving Jamal couldn't be good. It was enough to draw his single eye from gazing at the trees. His voice was unsure, as if asking the question didn't necessarily mean he wanted an answer. "Jamal and a jeep?"

Alec looked visibly shocked as he stared at Zach in mute astonishment. "Ye. Ye don' neh abou' Jamal?" His gaze remained locked as if he meant to follow up with a 'Are you serious?'. How was it even possible to have not even heard a hint of the chaos that destruction had caused? Without even thinking, the boy spilled it all. "J'mal drove a jeep in'teh a duplex, man! 'e killed some'un, stole i' and 'e drove i' righ' in'teh Ambrose's duplex!" His expression still registered a mild shock but that wasn't what mattered. He was only getting to the important part.

The teen abruptly snatched up the rims of his wheelchair and began rolling forwards, head lowered as if he meant to close the distance in order to prevent others from overhearing. It was then that he remembered how adversely Zach had reacted to his presence before, so his motion stopped as quickly as it begun and he opted to continue is as much of a hushed voice as he could manage. "'e jumped righ' b'fore i' caught flame! e' tol' everehone... 'e threaten'd t'do i' again too." By 'it' he meant murder of course. He didn't doubt it for a second either. The tiger and senseless violence went hand-in-hand in his mind.

Zach had a pretty good idea of Jamal's agenda. The tiger had landed himself in a cage once, for trying to kill Aubrey. How long ago had that been, a year? It seemed like so long ago, and yet couldn't have been that far off. He was momentarily perplexed. Thinking about the past caused him to hit snags, whole blank spots of memory, even from the time he'd been on the island. It made things distorted, and worried him for a minute. It didn't occur to him that it was because of all the electric shocks he'd received from the chip in his neck. But, just as soon as he'd really gotten a grasp on the fact that something was very obviously off, he chose to push it away. That was what he did with everything that threatened him. Nothing was wrong with him. Nothing at all. He wasn't going crazy like the other islanders.

Zach glanced down his snout at Alec. For once, not having an expressive face was a good thing. He bared his teeth a little, but the full horrified grimace was easier to keep off his reptilian face. Jamal was after staff, he reasoned. But if he was after a doctor, why would he try to hit a duplex? Unless... well, Ambrose was presumably another supporter of the labs. He flexed his claws nervously, toes clinging to the stair.

"He... but... how could he have done that without getting buzzed?" Not two seconds after the words left his mouth did he figure it out for himself. He couldn't pale, but the dullness of his scales and sunken-seeming eye probably contributed to an appearance of weakness and fatigue. Just what he needed now, another murderer after anyone who disagreed with his radical views. And unlike the rest, he must've found a way to get his chip out like the wolf.

Alec had crossed his webbed hands on his lap after the news had been told, donning a quiet expression. He never noticed how interesting Zach looked, how surreal were the movements of a large red devil within metres of himself. Unfortunately his silent and curious scrutiny only revealed to him a torrent of expressions the man was now displaying. The seemingly drastic shifts between viciousness, bitter rage, utter surprise and numbed shock. Despite his own somewhat persistantly intimidating look he was still a young teenager; mutilated and helpless on land and on a set of wheels. Zach frightened him, perhaps more than even the forever-merciless exterior of Jamal. Yes, he was afraid.

His hands slowly moved to the rims of his wheelchair though he didn't seem to want to move just then. Of course he'd thought long and hard about what went on that day infront of the wrackage of the stolen jeep, the death and destruction. Jamal no doubt had found some way to negate the effects of his chip. It made him ever more the dangerous, though more the target for the labs one would think. Then again, Alec wasn't that smart to think ahead to the future. He couldn't predict what would happen to Jamal or anyone else on the Island any more than he could predict the course of his own future. He just didn't bother, he took things in stride.

As the dragon man seemed to settle, the sharkboy tried to mirror this to no avail. Instead he merely shook his head, unable to provide the answers to what was most likely a retorical question anyways.

Zach made a noise as though he was about to say something, but snapped his mouth shut not a moment later. He grit his teeth together and once again looked away from Alec with his one eye. He didn't want to take things out on the shark, even though he itched to do so. It would have felt so much better to accuse him of being part of the problem, even if it was totally unfounded. But he had to hold his tongue on this one. He needed Alec's help this time, and he'd been scathing enough earlier. There just wasn't anything to do about this but wait till Jamal got caught.

He tapped several toes on the stair in a way that would have looked far less disturbing if done by fingers. He'd spent long enough pondering the many what-ifs that constituted his future. What he needed now were results. Perhaps Jamal's antics could sway a few of the less radical islanders? Or were they all as hopelessly insane as the tiger? He cleared his long throat.

"Well. Uh. Thanks for coming by. And for the apology," he forced out, most of the sincerity smothered by his split attention. His own fate was infinitely more important than anything he could think of. He started back up the stairs slowly, turning to glance down at the wheelchair-bound figure when he'd climbed to the top. "Don't be too hard on yourself. Just cooperate... maybe talk to S- Dr. Duvert if you need anything."

Without bothering to go into any details, he slipped back inside his dark duplex.

Alec's eyes wandered to the opposable toes of the dragon man's feet, the rhythmic tat-tat-tat against the hard metal surface of the staircase almost mesmorizing. Before he knew it, Zach seemed to have made up his mind about something and was quickly taking his leave of the teenager. "Ekay" He meekly responded to the man's advice though the mention of a 'Dr. Duvert' made him curious. He'd heard the name mentioned before by more than one person but had yet to meet this apparently famous individual. Although he naively trusted the somewhat scheming dragon, he wouldn't believe off the bat that any doctor working on this island could possibly be as accomidating as Zach made him out to be. Was he really that better than Moreau himself? Was he... worse?

All the teen knew was that he wouldn't be taking that advice to heart. No way in hell was he going to seek out a doctor for a friendly chat on his own accord.

With that settled in his mind, Alec glanced up to the retreating dragon to offer a friendly wave. "G'bye Za-" The door was shut. "...." With a light shrug, he turned himself around and wheeled off in the direction of his 'former' duplex with a slew of mixed feelings. What the hell went on there?

It always came back to the labs. No matter what it was, the labs were involved with it somehow. The April Fools prank? The dogs? Harassing, prodding, providing, and making life generally hard for everyone that tried to exert a measure of freedom. And they were unreachable behind their electric fence and gun-toting guards up the hill. All of them were out of reach... all except the one connection he was unhappily familiar with in the Village. Zach.

The horse-man had spent the morning mulling over it. He'd made a promise, but what did that promise matter to the likes of Sabin? Gaius scratched at the infuriatingly itchy patch on his rump where hair was painfully slowly growing in. He had little doubt the scientist was responsible for his first and only tattoo. But, that wasn't reason enough to break a promise.

Well, it wouldn't be actually breaking the promise he reasoned. It was just righting one of the myriad of wrongs the labs had committed, this one a particularly vile offense against the humanity of one of the islanders Gaius considered friends.

By mid-afternoon, Gaius was trotting across the lawn, Vixen bouncing about his heels, with destination clear in his mind. His knuckles knocked sharply on the door still displaying faded signs of red paint. Gaius stood back, folding his arms, and waited for the dragon.

There was a half a minute of silence as Zach crawled out of bed and grabbed the two most important objects he needed on him, the eyepatch and the panic button. The knocking had woken Zach up from a nap. His sleep schedule was never attuned to day and night more than about a week each month, and this was one of the off weeks.

It wasn't far to the door, but he had to be careful to duck his head enough the entire time or risk cutting into the ceiling with his horns. He rubbed the sleep out of his right eye, his other hand hovering over the lock on the door. He wasn't about to open it. What if it was Jamal? Or Thom? But on the other hand, it could be Kaveri... He cleared his throat and then called out the standard question. "Who is it?"

"You have something that doesn't belong to you, Zach," Gaius responded, not bothering to name himself. He doubted the dragon wouldn't be able to guess his identity by the tone of his voice.

"Open up," he continued, a bit annoyed that the dragon hadn't opened the door to begin with. "We need to talk."

"I'm flattered you'd think so, but I didn't take your girlfriend's virginity," he grinned at the door, trying to mask his growing concern over Kaveri's absence. It was reminiscent of the friend he'd lost ten years ago, and it was nerve-wracking enough even to think about. Not to mention the issue of getting zapped a couple days ago for no apparent reason. But no matter his worry, he knew that there had to be answers, and just because he didn't know them didn't mean there wasn't a good reason for everything that happened. "I've already got a girlfriend."

There was an audible click as he turned the lock. Gaius wouldn't be stupid enough to come at him again, he reasoned. He'd give him the benefit of the doubt, if only to be sure he suffered if he did make the wrong choice. His tail brushed across the floor several times. The door creaked open about an inch, allowing him to stare down the pegasus and his canine sidekick. "Talk? There's nothing to talk about."

Gaius's lip curled up in a sneer at the jab. "You calling Nita a whore?" he growled, his hackles and feathers rising. Vixen, sensing her companion's agitation, lowered her head, ears pulling back as she watched Zach intently. He'd been expecting a personal blow at himself, something he could shrug off, since it was coming from Zach of all people. He'd not been expecting mud flung against his--well, she wasn't a girlfriend exactly, but she was still a good friend! For Zach to dare question her character...

No, no, he had to stay calm. Gaius took a deep breath, forcing his hair and wings to settle down. He had a mission here. He always had a mission, he muttered to himself, but this one was pretty important by his standards. He'd not seen Lucas since February, and that, Gaius believed, was Zach's doing, in league with the labs.

Taking a step forward, Gaius forced a disarming smile. "What? You mean you're not happy to see me? It's been so long since our fun up in the labs, thanks to your precious Sabin..." Being a failure of a liar, the friendly act was flimsy at best, but Gaius pushed forward, leaning his bulk against the opened door and bracing a foot on the landing. Zach was not going to be closing that door easily. "Listen, it's just a small thing - I came to return it to its rightful owner. If you'll just hand it over, I'll be out of your hair - ah, sorry, I meant scales - in an instant."

"Touchy," he commented airily, glad to see the horse was upset.

He didn't have long to gloat, though. The door already had opened another couple inches by the time he had the sense to throw his own weight against it to try and close it. Not to mention, he had to listen to Gaius's own slew of insults. Gaius seemed to have the advantage here - the door wasn't doing anything but opening more and more every time he gave a little slack.

"We already established," he growled from between clenched teeth, digging his clawed feet into the carpet, "that was all your fault. Congratulations, you're an idiot. What more can I say?"

To the second comment, he could only offer a rather guttural feline growl at first. The door lurched forward on him and he stumbled back from it, desperately trying to regain his balance. He clenched his jaw tightly in agitation, sending the frill flaring. The duplex was pretty sparse in decoration. It had the usual bed and chair of any duplex. A geode sat in the corner, a couple unusual-looking rocks and cracked-open geodes were scattered on the dresser. Nearby those was a folded piece of paper with large, indecipherable letters printed on it, signed "Kav", weighted down by a small leather pouch filled with five gold coins. And finally, farthest from the door, was a nondescript little jar in which an altogether human-looking eye was floating in formaldehyde.

The horse grunted and snorted, putting his all into this battle of force. He didn't have the gift of claws like his rival, but the half-year of life on the island and the serums had done much to rid the man of the city-fat, toning his body down to hard muscle.

"It was just as much your fault, idiot, for lying to me in the first place!" The same old grievances, the same old accusations. But Gaius wasn't interested in running around those verbal circles again. Craning his neck, the pegasus tried to glimpse past the dragon into the room behind. The door creaked as the two strained. Most of it was just random junk belonging to the dragon, but... Aha!

Giving the door a hard shove, Gaius tried to dislodge Zach from it. Vixen slipped in the entrance he'd already provided. Making a desperate move, Gaius dove to the side, hoping he wouldn't get the door slammed on him. If he could just make it to the desk and back out...!

Most of the island didn't mean anything to him as it did to some islanders. He was usually above the concept of "territory". But if nothing else, this room was his. It was his only escape from the insanity outside. It was the only place where he had any fraction of control. Like hell was he going to let Gaius invade the only sanctuary he had left. "Get out!"

Snarling and blinded with his own self-preservation, Zach leapt back to the door as quickly as he could, trying to keep his tail and wings from knocking into anything as he did. Even though Gaius had reiterated several times he was here for something, Zach wasn't totally sure what it was. He was already slamming the door as Gaius leapt to the side. It was completely unexpected, but far too late to stop from slamming the door into the pegasus.
