As soon as the chill faded, Selena slunk back towards the first aid tent, grabbing a set of bandages for herself, wrapping up a scraped thigh.

Venturing back towards the others, she overheard a conversation she couldn't help resist giving her two cents on.

"Don't be daft," Selena scoffed, sliding up next to them, guns still in hand, eyes flicking around for possible enemies that might sneak back up.

"They are probably preoccupied with bigger s**t than taking care of their baby birds that have long since left the nest." But there was a quiver in her voice, and she dipped her fingers into a pocket to touch the trinket Velda had left for her.

Hard to tell what was worse; being abandoned...or feeling like you've done the abandoning.

Dave nodded gratefully to Julio, glad of the recap at least on the situation up top. It was unsettling though that there had been creatures coming /out/ of the portal when they hadn't so much as seen a soul down there.

"We didn't see a single creature in there. Not one. Not till whatever it was showed up." Suddenly those subtle voices and whispers he'd heard held very sinister undertones. "Best we stay on alert I think, this could be the eye of a very shitty storm. Because that place was HUGE. And not to see anyone...yeah."

He adressed Jess's question last because it was one he was concerned about, but he'd heard the tones of voice down there before he left, of men looking death in the face, there was no hint of smug betrayal anywhere. "I don't think so Jess. I think they..might have stayed behind to give us a /chance/"

He frowned more deeply at Selena. "They sounded pretty..sincere to me." his face was utterly serious. "I mean. It wasn't a "get out you inept idiots" fall back. It was a "This is a choice." sort of fall back."

Lucas winced, but tried to remain strong as the creature assaulted their ears. The damn thing had gotten away. Zoey was off to find friends, Mya was looking around, and if she moved her head back and forth any faster it would probably just pop right off, and some little kid had wandered into the area and was asking him a question.

"C'mon little boy lets go find your momm-" huh, he blinked at him. Was this supposed to be a hunter? "They brought damn trainees? Now look here son, you shouldn't be using such strong language." Even as he spoke he was looking him over. Yep, much too young. The boy needed to be cleared out of the area pronto, mission or no.

As much as he hated to do it the older man put a hand to his forehead and sagged just a smidgen. "Damn, looks like that monster hit me harder than I thought. Think you could help me over to the healing station?" Once there he could probably give the boy a nice love tap and stow him out of harm's way for a little while.

((Belatedly Entering))

Some time after the last hunter had trickled out, Em finally toppled out of the portal, landing right on her a**. She shouldn't have waited for Liam - she was just asking for trouble, doing something stupid like that. But she wasn't going to risk the chance of Cael losing his father - if he didn't smile enough now, when would he ever smile, then?

Her job would get way too hard.

She stayed where she was, hidden by the legs of the crowd, and looked up at the s**t that she'd teleported into. She hadn't seen whatever they'd been fighting, but she knew she'd missed something.

At least everybody was safe here.

Her eyes drifted towards the portal, and pursed her lips sadly. Two good men that she would probably never see again, still inside. She hoped that they gave War a hell of a fight. The next time she saw that Horseman, she wanted to see her bleed.

Guard duty. Wickett waited with feral wariness. The ragged remains of the Runic Death Hunters had been left at the portal mouth to beggar for scraps. He was careful, and in no hurry to see Halloween shriek under his weapons, even with the memory of his fallen team mates still close. He continued to wait while others killed the shadows that slipped through.

He touched his cards occasionally, like a holstered gun.

Withdraw, Dave was saying, All Hunters.

He watched the grounds, waiting for other familiar faces, and for something besides scraps.

And then it was gone.

Something felt wrong. Very very wrong. Aiden just couldn't place a finger on what. However, as usual, he approached the situation with a nonchalant attitude.

He simply waited for orders... where were the leads, anyway?

But Wolf had a pack all around him, even if the alphas were unfortunately not present. A pack hungry for information.

"So what the hell happened in there?" Mark asked the familiar face of the hunter he'd seen talking to himself on the island. Crazy or not, he wasn't going to find a single FEAR hunter that didn't have a strange antropomorphic hangup over their weapon. And in a situation like this he wanted the answers first. There was nothing good about those creatures disappearing. "Did you guys find the artifact?"

"Me too." Marsh scruffed his free hand through his hair, shoving back the strands that had gotten loose of the ponytail, and scanned the area, on edge and jittery and not particularly happy. The thing had gotten away. Still, he didn't think anyone had died, and Lowe was okay ... and that made him feel better than it should, really. "Let me see your back," he said, a little more gruffly than he'd intended to. He could at least do his job and patch the wound up properly.

At the question, he paused. "No, I haven't." He scanned the crowd, looking for her.

Little boy.

Trainee.

To be honest, Aaron wasn't sure which was worse. One implied that he looked really young (like someone who still needed his mother, apparently), but the latter felt like an indirect jab at his skills and training. That struck a nerve with him, if only because he felt that he had worked pretty damn hard to get where he was today.

"Number one," Without warning, he lifting his hand and stuck his index finger up right in front of Lucas' face, "I'm not a trainee. And two," Up came a second finger, "I am ********> Well, he topped that "hell" that he had just been scolded for.

There were two more was all she could think as she gave Julio an unblinkingly startled look. A look she couldn't seem to get off her face for an uncomfortable amount of time. When it finally broke, she frowned deeply as she reached up wiping off a bit of blood from her face with her fingertip and looked at it.

It was then she heard Selena harp up. So this is what an optimist looks like. She couldn't say she didn't like it. Forcing a slight smile onto her face.

"I hope you're right." She stated while warily looking around again. Wary. But Selena managed to soothe several of her nerves. Enough she managed to get out a calm little sigh.

And finally she looked at Dave, he added to the easing of her mind... still.. she had more nagging concerns.

"Then what do they expect us to do? Stand here and waste their efforts to.. stall... whatever it is?" She didn't know of a nicer way to word that, really.

And then the monster just... vanished. Cliff's smug expression turned to one of complete surprise as the lasso dropped to the street once more, leaving the southern boy to stumble backwards, tripping and falling back into his back on the street. Pushing his upper body up with his forearms, he stared at where the thing had been, eyebrows raised high enough you couldn't see them beneath the wavy blonde locks brushed over his forehead. That... had been surprisingly easy. In fact, he was suspicious with how easy it had been. Still, even as Cliff laid there for a good few minutes, there didn't seem to be any disturbance, nothing that disrupted the gentle wind and the soft hum as the other hunters began to recover.

When Zoey approached, he was already getting up from the street, brushing off a little before looking over at her, grinning. "I'm one of your favorite people, huh?" he teased, reaching over to grab her around the shoulders, squeezing a bit in a hug. The grin faded a bit when she mentioned Isaac and Adam, sobering him a bit -- he hoped they were coming back. Despite this thought, he forced himself to grin again, sighing a bit as he uncurled his arm from her shoulder to start winding the lasso again.

"You're right -- he's such a baby," he retorted, bending over to pick up the rope, "Goddamn am I regretting this weapon, it takes so long to put away."

She landed on her knees, roughly. Still dazed and over her courageous high, the fear was sinking in. And more, the heavy dense feeling hung in the air as if the Horseman had followed them out. Aki shuddered. Something's not right.

Hand on her knee, the Sun Hunter stood up. Her leader was still in there. She'd left her leader there. There was a bitter taste in her mouth. ...There were orders, but Aki could not deny that she had left for only one reason.

"Nico!" She called out, turned her head left and right, looking for her partner. She couldn't find him before they entered, but that didn't mean he wasn't here. "Flair!" She yelled. What if Flair hadn't made it out? What if the leads hadn't been able to beat War. What if--

Well... this can't be good. Where in the hell did that thing go? And why would it just run from a fight? Something isn't right here... they are up to something... Verdandi huffed, obviously not pleased with the fact that she hadn't been able to beat the crap out of the enemy a bit more. Miriam on the other hand was more than happy to get away without getting the stuffing beat out of her, but it did seem odd to her too that they had just run away.

" I know Verdi... but this whole thing seems to have been one big trap. So who knows what is going to happen next. As it is... the leaders haven't shown up yet. Damn it." Miri replied to her weapon as she scanned the crowd to see who all had made it out and if any of the runic hunters had taken any damage. Granted, she wasn't a healer, but that didn't mean she couldn't help or at least serve as some extra protection if someone needed help. Though for now there was no one she was paired up with or even recognized... and if things went the way she was thinking they would, it was probably for the best.

He looked up at the voice and shook his head. He let out a breath before answering Mark. "We got to the center... and it wasn't there. Then a woman came out of the shadows... With a s**t ton of hers with her. We were told to get out of there... The leads are still down there..." he trailed off, running a hand through his hair. He felt like he should have stayed. HE should have, he wasn't as powerful as the leads, but he could have helped.

And died for it. I am not going to let you die, pup. He glanced down at his weapon for a moment. Besides, that woman was far more powerful than any of you.

"They haven't come back yet... I'm starting to worry for them." He clenched a fist silently for a moment.

((Healing))

Apparently this boy didn't care for injured older men or about respecting his elders. He drew himself up, there was really no need to pretend like he was worse off than he really was if the boy wasn't buying it. "Now lookie here boy. You are too young to be mixed up in this even if they did promote you before you were out of the cradle. And there's obviously something messed up in your head if you think you can talk to me like that."

He eyed him suspiciously, "were you in the damn labyrinth?" Without waiting to hear his response he picked him up and threw him over his shoulder like a sack of feed.

As he walked to the healing station he passed by Zoey and Cliff and gave them a salute with his free hand. Just carting off a barely legal boy, nothing to see here.
