"Tell you what," Joker said, picking her up and taking her to a room that she hadn't been to yet in the place, "How about I tell you about the number of times that I've cheated death. I keep all those old suits, for memorabilia."

Rosie beamed and looked around the room. "Cheated death? Have you done it a lot of times?" she asked excitedly.

"Oh, yes," Joker said cheerily, as if this was something people did all the time. He set her on her feet, and then opened the closet on the left side wall. "Let's see... Well, I guess it would be best to start with the first time..." He pulled out a purple suit, faded fom years of existence, with a small slit in the left side of the chest. Blood covered the area with the slit, as well as below it. "This one, was right after my second encounter with the Bat. Someone who knew one of my victims stabbed me in the chest, just missing my heart."

Rosie looked at it curiously, then walked up to it to get a closer look at the stain. "How did you get away? Or were you taken to the hospital afterwards?" she asked, her eyes fixated on the hole and the dark stain running down it.

Rosie's smile faded as her expression changed, taking note of how serious Joker's expression had become. If anything, her curiosity had been piqued. She nodded once, and kept her focus on Joker.

"Alright then..." Joker took a deep breath, and began. "You see, the truth is, none of this is reality. There's some people. With computers. This is all just the product of their twisted imaginations. I don't say or do anything without them actually making me do it. The same goes for you. And your mother. And everyone else that you know." The clown started pacing. "These people are doing this because they think it's fun. Now, very few of us characters, because that all we are, really, just characters, actually know about this. There's this thing in the way. It's generally referred to by a theater term, 'the Fourth Wall.' The term comes from the theater concept of the backdrop and the stage side being three walls within the scene, while the fourth wall, though it exists for the characters, doesn't for the audience. It's what allows them to see us, and not the other way around. The few of us that KNOW about it..." Deadpool sprang into his mind immediately, though that thought didn't slow him down. "...Don't do anything about it, because without them, we don't exist. Our lives are entirely dependant on them. When we DO bring it up with most other characters, they just think we're out of our minds. Of course, I really AM out of my mind, but that fact doesn't make this any less true." Joker stopped pacing, and looked at Rosie with absolutely no trace of humor in his face. "Did you understand any of that?"

Rosie stared at him with a rather puzzled look on her face. Slowly, she shook her head yes...and half way through the motion, she began shaking her head no. "Kinnddaa....." she replied in an unsure tone.

Joker sighed. "I shouldn't be surprised... That same 4th wall is what's keeping you from getting it. We're not supposed to know about the other side. Here, think of it this way. You know about one-way windows, right? the ones that you can only see through on one side, and the other side is a mirror?"

Joker's expression brightened a bit at her recognition. "Alright. Now, just picture yourself, myself, and evryone we know on the side with the mirror." He was going to take it slow this time, to make sure she got it.

Joker nodded back. "Good. Now, imagine a whole slew of other people. These are the people that control our every move and thought. They are on the side with the window."

Rosie grew quiet again, and her expression grew quizzical. She tilted her head to the side in thought, and it took a moment before responding. "......okay. Is it.....kind of like....a 'higher power' kind of thing? Without....the whole free will?"

"Kind of, except they're just people," Joker said, "Not gods or anything like that. They have their likes and dislikes. They have life issues. And someone on that side of the window actually had to think of you in order for you to live. Think about it. Someone actually had to think of you, take the time to make that thought into a character, and now spend their time giving you life. Kinda makes one feel special."
