There was the sound of somebody cursing in a language neither Zach nor Emma knew, and silver-blue light flashed for a moment. A low, lyrical, obviously male voice sounded.
"The distance makes it more difficult. We'll have to try again."

"Um, excuse me," Zach called out to the voice that had spoken. "I don't suppose you would be willing to help me with my problem too. I'm a phoenix and I've lost my wings in battle. If you help me I'd be more than willing to help you in return."

A man (seemingly) in his early fifties stepped out from the shadows, running long fingers through short, silver hair.
"Emma has told me about you...Hrothbert of Bainbridge, at your service."
The man standing before Zach looked like he should be teaching at Oxford, like a professor, a scholar.
He was. But he was so much more.

"Pleasure to meet you, sir," Zach held out her right hand to the Lord of Bainbridge. Ivan retreated up Zach's arm to rest around her navel. "I'm Zachary Danta Charon."

"The pleasure is mine, I assure you." He took the offered hand and shook it warmly.
He was much better at hiding his power than Emma.
With her, a mage would see a brilliant aura at any time.
With him, only the most careful of observers would have detected that he had any power at all.
But he did. Oh, he most certainly did.

"I wonder if you'd be able to help me with my wings," Zach said nervously. "And if there is anything I could do or give to help with Emma's sudden change. I mean, she's done a lot for me and I'd like to return the favour."

Ivan would definitely notice, but Zach might not as the Sight flared in his eyes. "I believe I can help you." he said thoughtfully. "And if that can be accomplished you just might be able to help her."
He indicated Emma, who looked up from her spell-induced reverie.

Ivan did notice and tried hiding by moving to Zach's back. He knew it wouldn't do any good but it made him feel better by trying.
"That's fantastic," Zach exclaimed, trying to pay no mind to Ivan moving around her body. "And I won't have to die to do it?"

The couple noticed Ivan's movements and shared a brief glance.
"You will not." he replied.
"But it will hurt." Emma added, standing and walking over to where the other two stood.

"Yeah," Zach sighed. "I had a feeling it would. I guess it couldn't be much worse than dying tho, would it?"
She said nothing for a moment.
"Don't tell me if it is or isn't," she said.

Emma raised a hand to her rounded ears, still in mild shock.
Hrothbert slipped an arm around her shoulders, drawing her closer in a clear attempt at reassurance.
Emma was frightened. A rare thing for her to be.

"I guess I'm ready whenever you are," Zach said quietly before jerking her head to the side and revealing a set of red eyes.
"Not so fast," Ivan growled at the couple. "What exactly is going to happen here?"

His tone hadn't changed as he regarded the possessed Zach with a scholarly curiosity.
"Could you specify?"

"Mister of Bainbridge," Ivan nodded and glared at the man. "I want to know what this idiot's signing up for before she makes a mistake, so what exactly is going to happen?"

"Well, for a start, we are going to try and get her wings back."
Emma nodded emphatically as her own answer, hands already forming a spell-sigil. She needed only half a reason to tear into Ivan, and if he laid so much as a fingertip on her Lord-
