Flipping through the pages, as she cautiously glances over ta Elruda every once in a while, she landed on the directed page and stared. They want me to read this?!? This of all things? They have got to be kidding me...

There were so many scenes. Warriors, geishas, lovers, servants... how the hell did they get so many different character types in one story? She wasn't sure if they were all part of the same story now that she thought about it...

So, of course, the next scene was of love... the servant, who supposidly didn't die, was having an affair or whatever with the master of the household while the wife was out of town. Not only did the situation disgust her, but the lines were just plain cheesy. Oh my love? How long do we have together before your maiden finds us? It was all crap...She couldn't even bring hersefl to say it.

The lines were so orrible, the girl wondered how badly the judges would react to a few... changes...

"Oh my love... you are a fool! How could you betray your bride for one such as I?" She made the expression of anger and sadness, two she was better at than most. Boredom was her favorite though. "One so unfaithful... I could never love..."

Looking to the judges, she saw they were shocked somewhat... but they didn't complain. That was a good sign. Didn't meant she'd get the part though... not that she'd want it.

Flipping the pages towards the end now, she was happy to be almost finished, she saw that the last scene was a scene of farewell. Not bad for her... She'd had plenty of practice with good byes.

"Now I say farewell... for one I turn away, yuo shall never see me again..." She gave them a sorrowful look, one that she knew well as she remembered her past. "Good bye..."

A judge or two clapped for her, and one commented on how he beieved she wasn't going to make it... but now they were pushing her off into another room. Did they say a battle scene? Servent characters weren't supposed to fight, right?

Her dance was mesmerizing... At times, he wasn't certain if it wasn't an illusion before him. Though he knew of the Hyuuga family's unnatural grace before...and he had noticed from Yokou's particular gliding manner of walking... To see Elruda dance now... Not just him, even the director seemed enchanted by the Hyuuga princess' dance. For certain...she probably will be getting the heroine's part of the play... Somehow, the mere thought alone made his heart sink. He wanted to... So disconcerted was he, that Shinratsu did not notice the director repeatedly gesturing for him to begin.

Even if he managed the part of the geisha's lover entering the scene and gazing in awe at her dance quite well...he had long missed the moment of the dance when he was supposed to begin the flute accompaniment.

"Shin-kun!" Elruda had stopped dancing and rushed over. "What's wrong?" Her voice became thoughtful. "Do you have a fever? You look a bit red..." She gently reached out, to touch his forehead and check but then... "Kyah!" The director had taken her arm in a painful vicegrip and as she locked eyes with him...suddenly, she was filled with fear. True, she could use her Juuken in self-defense...but there was just something so terribly wrong with that person's eyes...

"Let her go." Shinratsu said coldly. "She's a foreign kunoichi of one of Iwa's allies." The threat hung in the air. The director looked hesitant, almost as if unsure of what exactly overcame him in that instant...but let go. Clearly, he did not want to create any sort of potential political scandal...

Shinratsu's eyes narrowed. He would prefer for the two of them to get out of this place as quickly as possible but...for now, it would appear that there was no need to further pursue the matter. Taking a deep breath, he beheld the flute to his lips and allowed crystal clear notes to be emitted, breaking the uncomfortable silence, notes floating gently and flowering into the surrounding atmosphere.

And indeed, almost relieved, quite quickly she moved away from the adult. Elruda rubbed at her wrist...it stung a bit. Well, nothing compared to Wrath-sensei's spars sure...but that was an unpleasant surprise. But...perhaps because Shinratsu's calm reached her, she was able to concentrate again. To get into a flowing position for the dance, she began with a small sweeping bow, before in a blur of colours, her outer kimono floated, suspended in the air for the briefest moment, as she did a sudden but held turn...dropping into a pleia, a gentle tondu, before proceeding to repeat the dance.

A strange combination...with the traditional elements of Japanese dance, Elruda had added some western elements... Nothing too exaggerated as that would ruin the pensive mood the dance should bring, but beautifully and smoothly incorporated.

Though the notes floated smoothly out, without error... There was no emotion in his music. Certainly, the dynamics, the crescendos and diminuendos were there...the staccatos and smooth legatos...but there was just something...something missing. The piece...he had left behind in Kiri...when that day in the ice and snow, a part of him had died... He wished the music accompanying Elruda's dance wouldn't give it such...a tragic atmosphere...but he could not help it.

Shin-kun... This music...wasn't at all supposed to be the flute music accompanying the geisha's dance. Certainly, it was the correct notes...correct tune...in fact, one could not find fault with it unless they really looked... But something just was missing. There was no spirit to the music - no vitality to make it alive. It was beautiful to listen to, certainly...Shinratsu was performing spectacularly...however, this wasn't the music the scene needed. And, despite the haunting beauty of the song Shinratsu was giving it...there was something painful about it to listen to, as if the music spoke unspoken woes...not because this play was a tragedy...

...but as if...the music instead brought to life...a certain tragic sadness in its performer... And with his song, so did Elruda's own dance change. Each step...instead brought to life a memory from her past... A father whose back she was only accustomed to seeing... A mother she rarely had by her side... Raised as a princess, pampered and constrained.

But like the bird in the gilded cage who wouldn't give up singing, dreaming of the sky... She hadn't wanted to give up her dream of freedom - freedom from the constraints of the Hyuuga family... To be free to be her own person... She shouldn't have been someone whom the Hyuuga family should've had to expect great things from. They were many greater clansmen of her age...her cousin Tetta, even her older brother Jurei, back when he was alive... Their presences had been as encaging, always compared, always outshadowed.

She didn't like the song, even if she admits that it was beautiful...
...it brought up unpleasant feelings.

Giglamesh would walk on to the stage and look at the director. The director would look at the giant man. "He look ...his attire.....oh my expect a performance from this man!" Giglamesh would clear his throat and slide on knee out and hold his right hand out as if he was holding something in it, was he going to pull the William Shakespeare hamlet play right.....more like William Shatner. "THERES...SOMETHING ON THE WING......SOME...THING!" Giglamesh would of acted exactly like Jim Carey in Ace Ventura II: when nature calls, grabbing a sound guy and pulling him in real close to him by his shirt. He would look to those watching that had fallen over anime style feet in the air as he performed. "...Oh well you guys can kiss the whitest part of my a**!" Giglamesh would stomp off the stage breaking a few things back stage as he stomped out, but slightly laughing to self.

In his music, now pervading strongly...was it remorse? A mourning for all that was lost... His face, a distant expression, as deft fingers guided smoothly over the holes on the flute, its sweet melody resonating through the room, soothing the minds of the listeners but yet at the same time...it was something hard to listen to... As if with each blossoming note reflected a stabbing knife on the heart, drawing blood...

Pieces of memories took root strongly in his mind... It was highly nostalgic, bringing up a certain bittersweet melancholy, however... Looking back now, it made him wonder...why...why did it not touch him before, how fortunate it was...the few tender moments really spent with his family... What he had taken for granted... Simply watching the stars with his parents, or, because his family members were sentry captains...being allowed to go to the highest point of the sentry towers and being able to see far into the distance - wondering what laid on the other side of the great ocean. Sure...in a way...in a way, he supposed it was sort of a caged bird existence...and when he came here...to this village in the mountains...he received the answer to what he was unconsciously searching for: freedom from traditional restraints. However, yet still...Kiri still evokes such strong memories...

He was living...with one foot in the past and another in the future... Desperately trying to maintain a hold in both...quickly sinking...the time would soon come that he would have to choose: to remain in the past or to go on to the future. Nankurunaisa... Giglamesh's saying. Live for today, but always look forward to tomorrow.

He only wished that he could.

Even if Elruda found Shinratsu’s song difficult to listen to, as the music progressed, her movements actually drew even closer to perfect coordination. But because Shinratsu's music was missing that element...in her dance, she provided it: small gestures, gentle gestures...but all the same, gestures of hope mixed in with the sharp regret. Indeed, though it was odd perhaps to look at such a pair...simply with how perfect their individual parts fitted together, like yin to yang, complemented and gave the setting an atmosphere that what one alone would've been unable to accomplish.

She was well aware of their growing audience now, not just the director and his Crew but also others who were auditioning.

Even though complementing the two significant portions of the scene was gradual...and then, they were in perfect harmony. The flute's music floated out smoothly, pouring out like water from the great river...telling a tale of long-forgotten stories, while with Elruda's equally smooth, graceful gestures, brought to life the music. It was a story that went beyond just the simple scene of the geisha dancing under the moonlight, waiting for her lover...but also told countless untold stories, similar stories...yet unique in their own kind... A dance and song that portrayed past the limits of country boundaries, here they were...two different but similar souls, hailed from different native lands yet in each other found something in common.

Shinratsu may not admit it, but he was glad...glad that he had ended up agreeing to audition with the Hyuuga princess. If he had not, he would not have been able to see her dance...so mystically mesmerizing it was. On her ankles, was tied tiny silver bells, that jingled with her movements... This song and dance...not the hero and heroine of the legend...not of Konoha nor Kiri...not even of Iwa...but theirs, and theirs alone.

Their moment.

Elruda's routine had proceeded smoothly, without error. A spectacular dance...she had added in and edited the required dance into her own: clearly, the same dance that was required but...infused with her own spirit, wild and free, her own mind...feelings...thoughts. She thought of nothing while her feet took to the pattern of the dance: focusing only and only on Shinratsu's music. The sadness... The underlying sadness of his song seemed to have faded now, growing in hope...escalating as a broken spirit would when it has found reason enough to live again.

A smile played on her lips.

They certainly made an excellent duo.

Her routine finished, Elruda slowed to a pause. Even if she had been breathing normally, when she finished...she was a bit breathless. Around the same time, Shinratsu's music glided to a fading pause. Excitedly, she turned to him. "Shin-kun, what do you think!" Well, it was perhaps a bit unfair to ask him...he was probably busy concentrating on playing his part. But with her words, one of the staff clapped. A spell was broken. More clapping, from other staff members, the stage crew too.

"Splendid." Commented a young woman - the stage crew captain. "Young lady, did you take dance lessons before?" Another, a middle-aged man this time, piped up. "Couldn't quite exactly make it out...but there seemed to be some elements of ballade incorporated to classical Japanese dance." Another member of the stage crew laughed aloud: "Well, it certainly was interesting. Most of the dance remained intact, but the young lady here had changed quite a bit!" A pause. "Well, what do you think? She does fit Sakuranko's part, doesn't she?"

The stage crew captain eyed Elruda up and down. "Hm...it's a pity. If only she could grow out her hair... But that's all right. We can use extensions." A squeal as she suddenly hugged the Hyuuga princess. "Kyah! So cute...like a little doll..." Another of the crew member interrupted. "Um... Can we talk about the accompanist role now?"

Mixed murmurs from the crowd.

"Well...he does play well..."

"Emotionally flat here and there..."

"Eh..."

All the while, Shinratsu waited patiently while they discussed him. It might've irritated another one other than him, but really... If they were going to speak about him like that, why not speak about him as if realizing that he was actually sitting there, listening to their criticisms? Whatever. He had realized with sinking disappointment. He was probably not going to get the accompanist role... Elruda's dance was perfect, stellar...however, his performance was not that stable. To be honest, it did make him feel quite regrettable...that he had not tried harder sooner.

He dreaded whatever conviction they might make.

The hopeful look on Elruda-hime's face...
...it made him wonder, what would her expression be, if the answer from the crew was...

After a while, they seemed to have made their decision.

"The young lady, for certain. However...we will like to proceed with the tests for..." The stage crew captain held up a sheet. "Fubuki Shinratsu-kun?" A soft smile, far from being harsh, at the boy. "Well, why don't we get continue?" A pause. "Whenever you're ready, of course." Unlike the director, this woman was kind...she did not want to pressure the young star hopefuls. Besides, a strained performance was always short of the height of ability.

Shinratsu nodded, before placing the flute gently to his lips. It was a wooden flute made out of enduring kaya wood: a special type of yew with pale golden wood that had wonderful sonorous qualities. He had particularly requested a wooden flute and not a fue, because noticeably, wooden flutes produced much more lovelier music than their purely metal counterparts. His fingers gently guided themselves over the holes of the flute, never once did he mistaken a note or blow it slightly out of tune... Like the gentle spring breeze of the zephyr whistling its gentle melody over the valleys, so did music pour out from where Shinratsu stood.

The members of the crew seemed mildly surprised: what they had seen before wasn't an illusion. Yes, this child did have ability...he had potential in the performing arts. And it was beautifully done too...half-lidded eyes, a gentle swaying of the body to further contribute to the smoothness of the notes and the overall grace of the performance... As well as oddly fitting...for the geisha's lover who had found her unattainable...because she already had a danna (lit. husband). In truth, her danna wasn't really her husband...merely her benefactor. However...because she owed her existence to her danna...the geisha and her lover could not be together... A sad love, a distant love...

However, the music had ended abruptly. The song never reached its full length... Shinratsu instead held a palm over his heart, breathing heavily. Elruda looked worried, and the other crew members rushed to him. Distantly, his mind registered pressing of what was wrong... "I-I'm fine..." He managed out. He...he couldn't do this. The realization dawned upon him slowly, but painfully. His body naturally had poor circulation after all...his physical stamina would not be able to withhold a suspended performance...

Realization seemed to come over one member of the crew. "You..." "Yes." Shinratsu snapped. "I have medical problems, is that satisfying enough?" Well, it perhaps wasn't the best way to phrase it...but it was true. It wasn't very well known, but it was a partially asthmatic drawback... Generally, a constant wind manipulation of the oxygen around them helped take care of the problem, and in Iwa the air was thankfully crisp and clean... However, it was still high up in the mountains and with very little vegetation...so the air was also thin. And when he performs dance and music, his breathing regulation also becomes more divided... Yet, taking a deep breath and calming his mind, Shinratsu placed the flute to his lips and resumed the song. Elruda had proceeded through her dance, gliding like a swan. Similarly, Shinratsu's fingers glided over the holes of the flute, the sweetest melody pouring from the instrument.

It was either for the better or the worse...but the crew's suspicions were confirmed. Shinratsu can perform extraordinarily well...but there was something terribly odd about his respiratory system... And that might be a potentially dangerous factor for him... They probably wouldn't have known, without seeing his medical records, of the pros and cons of the boy's limit - and how even the slightest accident may turn out to be potentially lethal. It was wrong too, for Shinratsu to brush by the sudden attack as if it did not matter at all...acting like absolutely nothing had happened and continued the music as masterfully as he had began.
