Carlos sobbed and slumped against Adrian, otherwise weeping silently. But he was listening to every word the rat said. He nodded because he knew that Adrian was going out of his way to change, even if it seemed otherwise. He was thinking differently, even if it was his actions, and his words at times, that were so cruel. What Adrian was doing, or at least attempting to do, was going to make him happy, someday.
He wiped his eyes on a shirt sleeve and looked up at the rat. "You are my motive. I know it's hard for you. I'm trying to help you... but you have to let me."

Adrian held Carlos close and petted the unicat's hair, trying to calm him down some. He honestly hated to see Carlos cry, and it happens way too often for the rat's liking. "I know you do it because you care, but it's just difficult to wrap my mind around that even though my heart is perfectly okay with it. I know you're trying to help, and I love it more than you know, but, like I've said about a million times by now and is not a good excuse, it's difficult to feel comfortable with it. I've been on my own for so long."

"I know." He half-grinned through teary and swollen eyes at the rat and muttered, "Maybe I should start calling you names or something." He sighed and leaned his head against Adrian's chest. "I guess some things just can't be figured out and we have to accept them without understanding them." He meant it as much for Adrian as for himself. Maybe there were things about each other they would never understand.

"Let's head back inside before we attract a crowd." Adrian kissed the top of Carlos's head."Yeah, there are a lot of things that we can't figure out but have to accept, like gravity." The rat tried to make a joke, he didn't know how bad it would turn out, or if this was even a good time for jokes.

Carlos nodded and hugged Adrian. "Okay." He glanced back at him. Was he joking? He smiled a little and stuck out his tongue. "Yeah..."

Adrian pulled away from Carlos and lead the way back to his apartment. "Come on, let's get cleaned up, we look horrible."

Carlos followed wordlessly. Oh? Really? He hadn't considered how he looked. He rubbed his eyes again. I must really look awful.

Adrian gestured for Carlos to enter the apartment first, being a gentleman...or at least trying to be one.

He tilted his head curiously for only an instant before smiling happily and slipping back inside the apartment.

Adrian followed into his apartment and closed the door behind them. "The bathroom is down the hall, if you want to wash up or something."

Carlos glanced down that way before turning back to Adrian and nodding. "All right." He hesitated for a moment then smiled and craned up to kiss the rat on the cheek with a wave of his tail before heading off down the hall and finding the bathroom.

Adrian gave Carlos a small smile, that the unicat is the only one allowed to see when he kissed him. After the unicat walked down the hall, Adrian walked into the living room and flopped onto one of the chairs.

Carlos washed his face in the sink. The sparing makeup he liked to wear had been completely smudged so he scrubbed it all off. Adrian had never seen him without it, had he? He rubbed at his star-shaped birthmark subconsciously, then looked in the mirror and sighed. Even though he had used cold water his face was still puffy. I look terrible... but he smiled at me, didn't he? Maybe things were looking up. Maybe things would work out all right this time. It wasn't that he thought there would be anything resembling a fairy tale ending, but maybe they would learn to just talk things out. Arguments were okay too, as long as they worked it out in the end. But these fights were just too much.
When he returned to the living room, he found Adrian in a chair. The unicat perched on the couch, toes curling over the edge like a bird. "So... before... we were going to think of something else to do. Any ideas?"

Adrian closed his eyes and sighed. Today started out so well, why did he have to open his mouth and ruin it all? He stretched out before curling up. He really hoped Carlos was okay, and that they would be okay.
He opened his eyes when the unicat spoke to him. "You...still want to do something with me?" The rat was shocked, happy, but shocked. He really thought he f*cked up bad.

Carlos rubbed behind an ear and sighed. "Well, I figure you're trying your best to change. But I know it's hard and a person can't change himself right away. So I have to try my best to help you. We need to do our best to support and forgive each other, and move on." He nodded and smiled. "That's what I'm trying to do."
