Lexis headed out the door and onto the ice where he glided toward Talitha and gently took hold of the knife, pondering on how he was supposed to cut the ice. He didn't want to accidently break the ice in a way that would cause them to fall in. Still, there's a slight risk in everything. "I'm not sure. I'm going to try to cut the ice though, so if you could stand back a bit then that would be great," He smiled at her, thinking that even if he cut it wrong and caused the ice to crack he could at least try to prevent her from falling in.

Talitha moved back, her green eyes fixated on the ice where he was going to cut. "Be careful," she said, nervously wrapping her tail arround her paws. Then she unwrapped it from her paws, thinking that if anything happened it would be better if he trip over herself in an attempt to help.

Lexis nodded, indicating that he will be as careful as possible. He gripped the knife in his paw, and, bracing himself for the possibility of the ice cracking beneath him, stabbed the knife into the ice. The knife went in about half and inch, not penetrating the ice completely. Lexis sighed a bit, happy that the ice wasn't breaking away beneath him, and continued to work at it. It took some time, but after about 10 minutes he had not only penetrated the ice but had started to make the circle. It would still be a little while until he was done, but at least it was progress.
(What do you think: thirty minutes to cut a good sized circle through thick ice with a butter knife? Or would it be less?)

(Yeah, I think thirty minutes sounds about right)
Talitha had layed down on the ice to watch him, fighting back a yawn at the slow progress. "I can help if you start getting tired..." she offered, wanting something useful to do instead of sitting around doing nothing. She pondered, "Or I could go look for a stick and some string, and something to use for bait... Are we going to fish with a rod or are you supposed to do it differently in the ice?"

Lexis continued to work, his paws going somewhat numb from the chill of the ice. Still, he toiled on. "I can take care of things here. You can go and get something we can make into a fishing pole if you'd like." He recalled how ice fishing was done. "It's pretty much the same fishing under the ice as it is during spring and summer. The only difference is that winter is a bit more work."

"Alright!" she said, springing to her paws and racing into the woods, flinging snow behind her in her excitement. Skidding to a stop next to an old tree, she dug around in the snow. She figured she would try to find a long stick that was still flexible enough to handle the weight of a fish. Her paws were getting a little frozen, but she finally pried out a stick she thought would work. Dragging it behind her along with her scarf, she set it down next to the hole Lexis was working on. "That's one out of two!" she said, stopping to peer excitedly at the progress of the hole, "It's getting close to being finished, isn't it?"

"Yep, it's getting there," replied Lexis as he worked on the last couple of inches on the hole. His paws were completely numb by this point, but he didn't care so long as he didn't get hurt. Finally, about a minute or so later, he completed the circle. "There! All done," he said. He set down the knife and carefully lifted the ice from the pond, revealing the water beneath. He placed the ice puck nearby, figuring that they could recover the hole when they were done.

Talitha had disappeared into the snow again after his first comment, reappearing a short time later with some string she had found in Chaos's dwelling. Trying to tie it to the stick with her non-opposable-thumb-paws she jumped up and whooped when he was finished, "Al right! What do we do now?" She was exstatic about being able to fish through the ice, and about being able to repay Chaos for feeding them and giving them a place to stay the night.

Lexis watched as Talitha tied the string to the stick, creating a homemade fishing pole. Now we need some bait... He looked around for a bit. Normally he would tie some worms or small fish, but in winter those would be in somewhat short supply. "Is there any leftover food that isn't going to be eaten? Like leftovers from the fish? Maybe we could use that as bait."

Talitha zipped off to scrounge through the house, trotting back with a few scraps of fish that had obviously been stuck to the wrapper too long. She set them down next to the rickety pole and asked, "Are these okie?"

"Those are perfect," answered Lexis. He then looked around a bit, searching for something to use as a hook. Something glittery caught his eye, and he picked it up. It was a metal paper clip. "Huh. I wonder why this is here." It always irritated him slightly when there was litter on the ground. Still, since this might help out he wasn't quite so annoyed. He tested it out a bit. It didn't seem to fimsy, but maybe that was just wishful thinking. He handed it over to Talitha to look over it, asking, "What do you think? Too flimsy for a hook?"

Talitha peered at the paperclip, inspecting it with a paw, "I don't think it's too flimsy, but I guess we'll never know unless we try... If it doesn't work we can always look for something else." If it didn't work because it was too flimsy to catch a fish, then she doubted it could really hurt a fish, so she wasnt worrying too much about that. But it could pose a problem to the pond if it was allowed to just sit on the bottom and rust. So she frowned a little, wondering if it would hold enough to the string and the fish.

"Well, let's try then," replied Lexis. Carefully he tried the string around the paperclip twice, knotting it as best he could. Then, with more effort than he expected to use, he manipulated one end to wrap around the knot, so that it wouldn't fall off so easily, and the other end into the typical hook shape. He then stuck some of the bait on. "Here's hoping," he commented, holding the make-shift rod by the handle and allowing the string to descend into the darkness of the pond.

"Hoping..." Talitha repeated, watching as the hook sank. She settled down and wrapped her tail arround her paws, not knowing how long it would take the fish under the ice to notice the bait laiden hook.

"It might take a while," commented Lexis. He hoped that a fish would bite soon, but there were no guarantees. "Anything you'd like to talk about to pass by the time?" He started compiling a list of things that they could talk about, just in case she couldn't think of anything.
