AUGH. I've been waiting 5 months to get a flute from my dad's girlfriend's best friend. 5 ******** months. And she's been like oh, it's in the shop, they're fixing up the pads.
And just now she admits she hasn't even looked for it yet, it's somewhere in her attic.
5 months of wasted time. My dad offered to buy me a cheap one (I'm looking at the highest price being $150, here) from somewhere, probably Ebay or Amazon and since you guys are the flautists, do you have any recommendations?
I was looking at this one http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/B000F08GJM/ref=s9_asin_title_1/002-3321738-0044827
Or maybe this http://www.amazon.com/Crystalcello-CWD406-Flute-Carrying-Accessories/dp/B000I5LBPA/sr=8-5/qid=1161819218/ref=pd_bbs_5/002-3321738-0044827?ie=UTF8&s=musical-instruments
Or this one http://www.amazon.com/Signature-Music-Brand-Flute-2810N/dp/B000BHC4BU/sr=8-11/qid=1161819218/ref=pd_bbs_sr_11/002-3321738-0044827?ie=UTF8&s=musical-instruments
Orrr maybe this one http://www.amazon.com/Flute-Carrying-Case-Accessories-Nickel/dp/B0007W8NAA/sr=8-12/qid=1161819218/ref=pd_bbs_12/002-3321738-0044827?ie=UTF8&s=musical-instruments (for some reason it looks so... bulky..)
Anyway you get the point, something very cheap but not garbage. As long as it plays. So yes, opinions?

Anyway you get the point, something very cheap but not garbage. As long as it plays. So yes, opinions? Please, please, PLEASE don't get any of those. Yes they will, play, but not for very long. All of them are nickel plated, and the oils in human skin corrodes, tarnishes and degrades nickel. Quickly. Try looking on Ebay if you want a cheap flute that will play well. I recommend looking for the low end Armstrongs and Emersons on ebay. But don't buy Venus or Cecilio or any of those, those are very very not good.

So i've decided to start a year-round sectional type situation with the marching band flute section. They all really love music, and marching band, but there are only a couple that can really play well, and all of them want to play alot better than they now do, so we all decided that well have meetings every week and work on improving everybody's playing skills (except mine, but my teaching skills will get way better). So next year, all of the flutes will be pretty good, and that's a wonderful thing. They're all so enthusiastic about it too. They're great.

Coolness!
GODAMNIT! Last week (Tuesday) I asked one of my band directors (who has taken an instrumental repair class) to replace a pad on my new-old flute. Well, ya, he ends up with the wrong thickness pad and I have to send it to the local music store to get it fixed. So I still have my student model Armstrong to play off of.
I am going to go insane if I don't get it back soon. I haven't had any time to go pick it up, even though it was finished on Wednesday.
Wait...I don't even remember when he broke it now gonk

Rhyala:
Yamaha flutes arn't that bad of a price and I've found mine to be pretty durable. It's silver plated, silver head, b-flat foot, open hole. Ended up costing $800. Of course I never took it marching, but I've also never had to change the pads and it still has a nice tone. So I'd recommend just buying one of those and being done with it. Be better than buying something to last just a little while that makes your ears bleed and never ending up getting the free one you're supposed to get. (Of course you could get the free one anyways and make the worse of the two the marching flute. Then you're all set! ^.^)

I could never afford that. sweatdrop I can't get much because I'll be getting my license soon and spending a lot of money on that plus driving lessons and stuff, plus I'm saving up for a $1000 trip in May, and ontop of that I need $70 for my lessons again this month.. gonk I'm not really looking for one for school, just something to play at home. I borrowed a flute over the summer but I'm not going to switch sections, as I would be really, reaaally screwed as our band is only for people with experience and I'd suck and be terrible. xd We also don't have a marching band anyhow, so yeah. D: bwaha! I want a four member marching band to go to competition and kick some major butt. xd Anywho, I understand the money thing and empathise. Just keep in mind that the really cheap stuff makes for a bad bad tune and makes it hard to practice with. My best suggestion now would be check out the thrift stores. Sometimes people don't know what they're giving away. Hey, it's happened before.

Well, you can look and hope for a store that has either 1) a big sale (I got my pearl flute for 200$ and have had it for 5 years and only had to take it in 2 time [and both of those time were because I'm a major clutz] I love how it has removeable finger pads) 2) going out of buisness. My band director said there were some flutes at Brook Mays for under 200$! (The Brook Mays near me is going out of sale)
I wish you luck on your flute hunt! :salut:

Farferalloie __penguin__ Why does everyone say an open hole flute is better than a closed one? Because it produces a better tone...you'd have to hear one to know. xD Night Rain: Open-hole is for anyone, not just professionals, some people even learn on open-hole, but most people learn on beginner closed and move to open later on. I love my open-hole flute <3 Now I just need lessons sweatdrop Right On.That's a clear respond+=D
