When you make a practice exam, relate it to the actual exam. Seriously, giving a 20pt question on something that was not indicated to be on the test is a horrid move. Don't do it again, 'kay?

You are not going to be recieving paper statements on your cd anymore. There are three ways to get this information now. It is not the end of the world. Really, it's not.

What script do you prefer, if any?

As much as I want to chime up with Old Persian Cuneiform!
I can't really, it is awesome, but not what I find most elegant.
For me, it is a toss up b'twixt Pahlavi and Avestan.

Poe, one more question then, before I start ratcheting around with your response... Do you observe The Internet, Gaia, and/or this Forum to have their own distinct cultural identities?
I am glad I can provide you with a bit of mental exercise. 3nodding

I am also glad you liked that part there Sophist. wink

I hate that in the present age if you don't have a checking account that you can't do anything much with your money. This is the third time in 6 months that my bank has charged me an overdraft fee on a purchase made 4 days before. How the blazes am I supposed to keep track of my finances when you don't remove the money until days after the purchase? And the rote answer that I get from every single employee, including the branch manager, isn't helping with the fact that I really want to find someone to throttle. If a purchase is made on Friday it was made on Firday, not Monday, not Tuesday. I am sick and tired of you taking $37.50 out of my account every time you feel like it and not being able to give me a decent explination or tell me how you even came to the conclusion that I overdrafted when there's still a blasted POSITIVE balance!

Have you considered a new bank? Or tying your checking account to your savings in a manner that doesn't charge overdraft fees? I don't have a problem like this with my Credit Union.

I also had problems keeping track of my money. I recommend getting checks from the bank. Usually the first few are free. It comes with a ledger where you can write down what checks you wrote and to whom, as well as the new balance after that. I would just use that ledger to keep track of every purchase you make and update your balance constantly. That way you won't have to rely on the electronic version that does not update immediately.

It's because they make money holding your purchases and charging you overdraft fees.

When I pay off my student loans, it sometimes takes a week to take the money out of my account. And, I have overdraft protection, which means they charge my $10 to make sure I don't overdraw.

also keep this in mind -- just because you purchased it on Friday doesn't mean the purchase was settled on Friday. If you made it with a check card, it goes through a settlement processes. You can see this most readily with gas purchases. The pump charges $1, holds as much as they can (I saw a costco doing an authorization hold of $100 for a $17.

So that $1 is what shows up in your pending until both, say Visa, who underwrites your check card and the vendor agree and settle for the $17.

So yeah, keep a register. Don't run your debit as a credit, run it only with your pin. Electronic registers aren't automatic, we still have to wait for settlement, clearing, etc.

I have a week to do a three to five minute spoken presentation in Spanish, with an accompanying PowerPoint presentation, which requires at least fifteen photos from my life.

The presentation is on my childhood. Which revolved around moving a lot, and around illness, neither of which I have the vocabulary to describe. And there aren't fifteen photos of my childhood IN EXISTENCE. Of me, there's maybe two or three.

And I still haven't quite figured out the difference between the preterit and imperfect tenses (though in my defence, neither has the rest of the class, and THEY aren't a week behind).

I think a lot of the time when you're learning imperfect and asked to describe your childhood, they just want to say what you used to do as a kid. It could be as simple as "Cuando yo era niña, mi mamá me llevaba al parque y yo jugaba con los otros niños por el día entero." It doesn't have to be much more complicated than that. If I were you I would just avoid mentioning having to go to the hospital and having to move because those would be considered things you did infrequently, while you would use the imperfect to describe things that happened fairly often in the past.

Why run it only with pin? What is the difference?

PIN runs it solely like a debit -- straight from your bank account. Running it as a "credit" means it goes through VISA, MC, whoever underwrites it, and will allow you to take more than the amount in your account out and overdraft, incurring fees.

Or at least, that's how I figure it works at my bank -- our ATM cards can be used at places that will run things with pin, but not with as a credit.

But then, I'm also more forgiving than I should be with overdraft fees, and we don't charge for overdrafts of less then $5.00.

Honestly? Most of the problems I've seen people have with overdrafts could be avoided by better monitoring of their account, such as keeping a register. I'm bad though, I don't keep one either.

Do you know why banks do that? I remember my mother explaining that to me when I first got a debit card, but I never did understand the reasoning behind it. That would be cool to know.

Short answer, we don't. That's entirely the process of settlement between the merchant and someone like Visa. Places will do an authorization hold until settlement is complete, then it falls off and is replaced with the actual amount. Settlement takes about 1-7 days for debit cards, up to a month for credit cards.

The different amount for gas happens when you swipe it first -- the pump has no idea how much you are going to get so it only charges a certain amount, which finalizes during settlement.
