She snuggled against him, pulling his arms tightly around her. "Now you can mentally shut down your systems and exhale the air in your lungs. Would you like me to go first or to wait until you've gone before I go? We could go together. It's up to you."

"Stay merged with me then, and do everything I do." Callista imagined a little switchboard in her mind, each switch on it turning a system of her body on or off.

"More or less...like turning out the lights when no one's home to save energy." Callista started to flip her switches off slowly, taking her time to make sure Valzar followed suit.

Valzar's heart pounded as her breathing rate began to slow. This went against eveything he'd ever known...

Callista sent him feelings of warmth and love, urging his heart to slow and match hers as it began to stop beating.

Callista reached in and took control, slowly shutting his systems down. Sleep well, lifemate. She echoed it into his mind as she turned off the last system.

Valzar's consciousness slowly faded away but at least he was with Callista...

Callista let herself fade as well, using her last breath to kiss Valzar before she waved the ground over top of them and fell to sleep.
Several hours later, the sun sank below the horizon. Callista's heart started to beat slowly, her mind moving the ground above her and her lifemate so that they could wake up to fresh air. Callista smiled when she opened her eyes and took her first breath, Valzar's strong scent the first thing to enter her lungs. She floated herself out of the small "grave," as Valzar called it, and then floated him over to the bed and closed the earth. Curling up next to him on the soft mattress, Callista hovered inches above his mouth when she issued the call for him to wake. She wanted his first breath to come from her lungs.

Valzar blinked himself back to the world of the living and he was surprised and grateful that he was no longer in the grave. Even more so for the pleasant waking from his lifemate's lips. My Callista...
