((eek, three posts in a row?? sweatdrop ))

Okay, A House Relay Race

The Hogwarts founders cast an enchantment on the castle to ensure that spirit week was celebrated properly, and this year they've gone off a bit...

The first day of spirit week, during breakfast, four animals appeared simultaneously at different places in the castle. A large flesh and blood, lion appeared in the Astronomy Tower. A surprisingly vicious badger appeared in North Tower. A massive and imperious Eagle appeared just outside the entrance to the Owlery. And a large silver Snake appeared hissing and spitting madly near the Headmaster's Office.

They're quite resistant to powerful magic, and the Headmaster feels that the animals need to be together in order to be dealt with, and the only place big enough would be out on the grounds. So each house has to somehow manage to herd their creature to the grounds.

The Gryffindors will have to demonstrate their courage and nerve in order to lead the Lion away. The Hufflepuffs will have to show the protective and suspicious badger their truth and kindness in order to earn it's trust and lead it to safety. The Ravenclaws will have to use their wit and learning to outsmart the sharp-eyed Eagle. And the Slytherins will have to coerce the poisonous Snake to do what they need.

Then basically it will be a bit like the Giants, in how it works, they have however far the animals have to travel and the numbers could be the methods that work, and the ones that don't. That kind of thing... And they have to work together because well... they don't want to get any of their appendages ripped off.... wink

What do you think? Maybe? Silly? Perhaps you need a vivid imagination to enjoy it.. haha...

DUDE! I've always loved the thought of Poltergeist in the Pear! I seriously wish I was a House Elf for last year's spirit week.

AND Runaway Giants is also brilliant! I love it!!! I can't help thinking that Spirit Week this year is going to have a tough act to follow after last year's. xd But I'm at least fairly confident that this year, at least, Hufflepuff will definitely hold it's own.
And we're totally win everything too wink

Okay. Ideas!

Hm... For clothing, maybe use the seasons? Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring? Only I'm not sure which season would go to which house... And House Colors are always fun.

Hm, 2011 is the year of the Rabbit... And then I looked up the number 11 just for fun... and the Eleventh house in astrology is the segment of the horoscope ruling friendships, hopes, desires, and social relations apparently. If anyone can think of something that relates to the year or something...

if we were going to do house :season it should be slytherin for spring cause spring is green and thats the time for us grffiendor should get summer cause summer is known as the month of fire which is red
winter blues is said to cause people to be sad so winter would go to raven claw and that leaves fall for hufflepuff who get to have the orange/yellow colors of the changing leafs

rofl thanks! I haven't read your idea yet, but I saw the relay race, and I'll save everything else for my response.

I don't think we should use seasons this time because we used elements last time and it's really, really similar.
We can do animal themes maybe.... like Monday = Eagle Tues= Lion, etc. Friday would be House Pride day.
Or we can flip that and have each day be a color and on Friday, the members represent their house by having their symbol equipped.
I sudddenly have a headache

One word: amazing; two words: LOVE it. three words: oh my gosh!!!
Summary: hellll yess. Excuse my language. Anyway, I love the backstory. We can work out a few of the other details (like maybe using dice or something)... but if everyone else loves it, then I say we go from here.

We've never focused on the animals before, so I like how that would all work around the animal symbols

Really?!? xd I'm glad you like it!!!!

Well, I went a bit overboard on it yesterday, before I decided to make it a bit more brief to submit it.... but I did a little teaser....

House Spirit Week is a very old tradition, set in place by the Founders of Hogwarts themselves. They placed powerful enchantments on the castle to ensure that it be observed every school year without fail.

On the first day of Spirit Week, suddenly during breakfast, the whole castle gives a great loud shudder. The windows rattle and all the plates and cutlery on the tables clang and bounce, the noise is deafening until suddenly --it stops-- and the great hall goes eerily silent as everyone listens...

Then, the silence is broken by a loud, booming, genuine lion's roar coming from within the castle!

red: I love it too!! It think that's an amazing idea, and I love the teaser.
Based on how long this event lasts, I think it should just be a race to get the animal to the grounds (and not get rid of them or anything).
I think we should use dice rolls, and each roll moves the animal either towards or away from the grounds a certain distance.
In order to make the people within each house work together, we could have a rule that says something like after you roll, you must wait for someone else in YOUR house to roll before you can roll again. Or maybe it should be up to two rolls, like this:
Red rolls twice, the Slappy rolls once, then Red rolls twice, then Slappy rolls twice, then Red rolls once, etc.
So you cannot roll MORE than twice without someone else in the same house rolling in the middle.

As for what to dress up in/themes for each day, I think that animals would be pretty difficult. Even though we did elements last time, I think seasons would be ok because it a little different from elements and less difficult than animals. Or we could pick a color for each day, but that would be more like guild pride rather than house pride because everyone would end up dressing up in all the house colors. I think we should make one day a guild pride day where you try to make your outfit represent ALL of the house colors (and house-elf purple too).

Thanks Lyra! Thanks Tina! And Tina congrats on the head of house-ship! xd

The way I pictured it playing out was that the School Founders cast the enchantments to make sure that the students found out what it means to be part of their respective houses during spirit week. So when the animals arrive and the students and staff turn to their Headmaster saying things like, "Can't you get rid of them, Headmaster?" "Surely such dangerous beasts aren't conductive to learning!" and the general mass of students begin to panic, their Headmaster stands to address them.
And Headmaster Adonis --in a moment of Albus Dumbledore-ian omniscience, tells the students that he can get rid of the creatures but he needs the animals all together in one place, someplace big enough for all of them... the grounds of course, and that they, the students, need to try to cajole the beasts through the castle and into the grounds. In essence telling them exactly how they can get rid of the animals themselves. Knowing full well that once the students finally manage to get the animals to the grounds willingly, they will have unknowingly had to understand the values and principles of their house ("understand the true meaning of Christmas" type of moment wink ) thus fulfilling the Founder's magic, and in doing so, the animals will vanish having done what they were sent to do.

Haha, that's how I pictured it anyways, I'm afraid it might be too narrative, but I just thought I'd iterate it.

So yeah, like I say, I think it'd be something like the giants, where people do either random number or the dice, and the number indicates whether they gain ground, or lose ground. And instead of spells, I was wondering about what the different methods they would have to use for each animal would be, to bring home the idea of House values and such. Perhaps I'll post some suggestions for that in a new post.

I really like Lyra's suggestion about where you can roll up to two times before you have to wait for another person from your house to roll. It's perfect, cause we are going for House unity I believe... (and personally I see some fun role playing opportunities in that. xd )

Ohhh dear... another novel... Thanks guys for valuing my opinion enough to tolerate my 4th book length ramblings! heart

For whatever reason... thinking of a lion in the castle, makes me think of Jumanji. User Image

Man oh man, I'm such a nerd...
Ideas for the Houses to do different things, I think numbers for all the houses should be the same, as in the number rolled and it's outcome in distance gained or lost would be the same for everyone, just that in the spirit of narrative they'd be for different reasons appropriate to house. So some suggestions...

For the Gryffindors, there's nerve and chivalry. Both things needed to even just approach a fully grown Lion, in my opinion.
For a roll gaining 10 meters, a Gryffindor might have approached the lion, looking it in the eye, never breaking eye contact and bowing. In a very Hippogriff-like trust earning gesture.
For a roll gaining 100 meters, they might get a piece of raw meat from the kitchens wave it up for the Lion to see, and lure it the distance before giving it the meat. (cause who in their right mind would get anywhere in between a lion and it's food? A Griffindor of course. wink Those plucky daredevils)
And then a roll losing however much distance could be something like, the Lion gives a great loud roar, and they squeal with terror, diving to hide behind a suit of armor.

For Hufflepuffs, loyalty, fair play, and kindness. And to win over a badger, which will protect itself against bears and wolves... well...
For a roll gaining 10 meters, a Hufflepuff might sit near the badger for half an hour rolling fruit to it and earning it's trust.
For a roll gaining 100 meters, they might defend it from the scrutiny of another student, or something....
And then a roll losing distance, might be something where they try to scare the badger into moving forward, but to their great surprise and horror they find the badger advancing toward them hissing and sputtering, forcing them to back away very quickly...

I'd suggest something for the Ravenclaws and Slytherins, but I think I'm talking too much... and would like to hear what other people think sweatdrop

I love all of your ideas! And please do suggest something for Ravenclaws and Slytherins, because I am severely lacking in the creativity department. I think we should say that people need to try to roleplay and give those as examples maybe.

I've been ruminating on what Ravenclaw and Slytherin can do for probably more than a week now(if you want, just read the black, that's the crux of it anyways)!

Ravenclaw is giving me the most trouble, cause whenever I try to problem solve it, I just keep thinking of the times we'd get a sparrow stuck in the band room at my high school back in the day. And in those situations we'd be trying the most ill-conceived methods possible, I swear it was like everyone in the room's IQ dropped 60 points! Finally, we learned to just throw all the windows open and the door (which oddly was usually how the bird got out) and wait it out.

Anyways, I did a little research on the behavior of Eagles and Snakes, to help me in my ideas.

For Ravenclaws, wisdom, wit, and learning. Definitely things needed to lure a sharp eyed member of the avian raptors! (especially if you don't want to get ripped to shreds by it's talons)
Real quick, in my research i learned that eagles blink with a transparent membrane, so they can literally see everything. And that they are faithful to their nests, and will always return back to it. So let's see if we can put that to use....

For a roll gaining 10 meters, a Ravenclaw might observe the Eagle, transfiguring buttons into mice to experiment with it's behavior.
For a roll gaining 100 meters, a well-learned Ravenclaw might have observed that the Eagle continues to return to it's nest, so then to edge the Eagle along, they could levitate the nest very carefully down the corridor while the eagle is away, and then cast an illusion making it look like the nest hasn't moved. There by gaining ground without the eagle being any the wiser.
And then a roll losing distance might involve a misstep in the above plan, where they try to move the nest and the eagle see's, in which case the eagle protects their clutch and swoops down at the blundering student who very wisely runs away with their arms covering their head.

((For ravenclaw I also contemplated the possibility of trying to manipulate the air waves in Hogwarts to make it conductive of flying... and also making the ceiling higher to make the eagle more comfortable. OH! Or maybe they could make the ceiling lower, and then the eagle would fly forward trying to get to the higher altitude which is what it is more used to... that one has merit... ))

For the Slytherins I had a little bit of a better time when I remembered what Phineas Nigellus said, "We Slytherins are brave, yes, but not stupid. For instance, given the choice, we will always choose to save our own necks." wink

For a roll gaining 10 meters, a Slytherin might convince a First year that they can speak Parstletongue and that the snake wouldn't have a problem at all if said first year were to grab it by it's tail and drag it part way down the corridor.
For a roll gaining 100 meters, they might cast a warming charm, warmth being something that a cold blooded snake will seek, and luring it down the corridor with the promise of warmth.
For a roll losing distance, they might conjure a mouse for the snake as incentive, and then lose said mouse, and have to wait while the snake hunts the mouse down, watch as it eats it, and then have to put up with it's slower movement while it digests it's prey.

Alrighty, so those are some ideas, but I do like the thought of people coming up with their own as well! I know I probably would enjoy doing that, but then I always get carried away role playing for event games. whee
Anyways... Any thoughts? Ideas? Fun stuff?

(P.S. Did I mention that I think the idea of doing Portkeys for the QWC is genius? Cause I do! Great Job Mod Squad! Thanks for keeping things fun, and whimsical!)
eek Holy Smokes! I wrote a lot!!! sweatdrop

P.S. I'm definitely going to STOP talking now. And if I do talk, I shall limit myself to four sentences MAX! Sorry for my ramblings! If there is anything I can do to help out, just let me know!

In your case, I don't mind the long posts because I don't find them unnecessarily wordy. There's just a lot of information in them, so they turn out long. I read every word biggrin Four sentences isn't that much. Maybe try one or two decent-sized paragraphs instead? (By decent-sized I mean like the one below.)

The game seems pretty sorted, so how about we discuss themes for each day again? (Part of this is copied from what I said earlier.)
Icee didn't want seasons because it's kind of similar to elements, which we did last time, so she suggested the animals, but as I said before I think that's too difficult. There aren't many items that represent the house animals, and those aren't exactly cheap. Even though we did elements last time, I think seasons would be ok because it's a little different from elements and less difficult than animals. Or we could pick a color for each day, but that would be more like guild pride rather than house pride because everyone would end up dressing up in all the house colors. Red: We';re going with your idea.

Question though before everything else gets laid out: do you want to create a thread or just participate? It's up to you! You can def do both, I'll just need to know so we can take this dicussion to PMs or something
