When you play scales in class and a director asks for you to play a Bflat major scale, do you start on a Bflat and not sound like you're playing the wrong note? If yes, you're playing a C flute.
Most likely you do play a concert C flute, it's the standard one, most people start out on this.
My question is, what's a good (but not too expensive, under 1500 please) open hole flute? I march with a closed-hole, and play clarinet in concert, but I wish to get my sister an open-hole (or at least persuade my parents to do so) flute so she won't be stuck with my 5 year old closed hole.

Or, if you can't afford solid silver, which is usually found in professional models with are extremely expensive, you could go for a sterling silver body with plated keys. The Jupiter 711 series is good, well, I think at least, because I have one. XD Split E is optional, but not available on inline G flutes which is what most intermediate flutes have. I advise looking up all termonology you're not familiar with online before buying a flute. Another good one is an Armstrong intermediate, I think they only make one, it has a gold lip plate, which does affect sound, though it is thick wall.

yay! i play the flute!
i also play the alto and tenor sax, but the flute is my favourite.
it just sounds so...sugary, you know?
i love playing the flute. most of the time i dont really like other flute players, though. no offense or anything, but they can be the snobbiest people in the whole band.
makes me sad, seeing as the flute is the coolest instrument <3
w00t for fl00te. <3

There are 4 flutes total in our 2 bands, 3 in advanced which I am in. Erm, yah. We are actually not snobby at all, 1 is an outcast 8th grader, 1 a quiet 7th grader and then there is me. The ever so odd 8th grader. x3 We are all girls. The ENTIRE woodwind section in our advanced band is made up of girls! lol And the entire brass section made up of boys! In begining band I play the Single Bb French horn with another girl who plays the F French horn, then 1 trumpet and a flute, and an alto sax, and um... a baritone. There is only 3 boys in the begining band. 1 on purcussion, 1 on guitar, and 1 on the trumpet. xp
I'm thinking about asking if I could rent a bassoon and teach myself to play that ontop of the flute and Horn. =) Whee! Then I'd be a woodwind, brass player with a reed. =3

People don't think much about flutes sadly.Im an 8th grade advanced flute player at school and im the only 8th grade flute player which sucks.ITs seems as though everyone wether play clarinet or percussion and everything.Theres I think three flute players that are advanced and were are also not snobby. We see no reason to be.Were just like the rest of them just really high pitched.Theres two seventh and then me.

Why does everyone say an open hole flute is better than a closed one?

Yes,it is.My old music teacher has a open holed flute. And it was able to play higher/lower pure notes than the original one....A closed hole flute is a student flute and the op hole one is for very proffesionals...

__penguin__ Why does everyone say an open hole flute is better than a closed one? Because it produces a better tone...you'd have to hear one to know. xD Night Rain: Open-hole is for anyone, not just professionals, some people even learn on open-hole, but most people learn on beginner closed and move to open later on. I love my open-hole flute <3 Now I just need lessons sweatdrop

Nah, she's 3rd year already, 4th year next year. We share the closed-hole, when it's marching season we rent a flute from the music store, but when it's concert season I go back to clarinet and she just uses the closed-hole. She's a middle school student right now, but high school next year and the competition is fierce to move up bands, it's ridiculous. I was looking for more toward what brand would be best, but thanks for the info about split E, I know about the B foot one but not about split E. Anyone know any good brands? I've heard Yamaha's Allegro is pretty good for an open hole and not excessively expensive.
