The Shadow could accomplish nothing. They were truly and properly trapped, and unwilling to attack. Helmsborough was unwilling to attack. This could go on for days, unless Helmsborough suddenly got some initiative. The Shadows reformed themselves as one, smiling at Helmsborough unpleasantly.
---
Paul woke up. He tried to get up from the prostrate position he was in, but he had no strength. He tried to call out to someone, but he was too tired. Oh, and too lazy. Someone would notice eventually. He tried to find Joe, and instead found Darius, whom he marveled at for a moment before trying to find Joe again. Instead there was the flaming Djinni-channeler. Or, Joe. So he'd found Joe, but he didn't exactly want Joe to touch him. What about Siber? There was Siber, but he seemed busy. Or at least distracted. So no good there. Groaning, he tried to go back to sleep, but failed at that too.

The ring of unlight began steadily drawing inward.
--
Joe's patron gave Joe a mental effect that felt like his brain shrugging and the fire began to slowly recede.

Joe frantically gathered his energy as he felt the Patron pulling back, creating a bubble of energy around Joshua that would continue the healing process without Joe needing to prompt it. As his fire vanished, Joe fell back, gasping. That had been a serious strain, now that he was done. Hearing Paul groan, Joe looked over. "Hey," he called weakly, before cocking his arm back and lightly lobbing a small ball of universal energy at his prone form.

Sabre's voice, distinguishable by the sheer amount of evil-ness, broke free from the mess of Shadows.
"Let the others go. I'll fight you alone. Let them leave. They've done nothing to you. I am responsible."
---
Paul jerked slightly as the energy struck him. It flowed into his limbs, and he finally had the strength to sit up. He pulled Joe's sunglasses off of his eyes and rubbed the sleep from them. Pulling them back on, he checked his pistol, then noticed he didn't have the Athena rifle - or at least he didn't until Fyrin dropped it into his lap, telling him, "Here you go. I don't suppose I need it anymore." Paul glanced at him oddly, but he had moved past, to the edge of the unlight field.
None of the Shadows had time or concentration to take notice of him. Instead, Fyrin tried to gain Helmsborough's attention. Somehow, without words or visible features, he communicated an idea, an idea of "let me have the Shadows."

"Forgive me for not believing they'll just leave me alone," Helmsborough replied, eyes still closed. His next sentence answered by Sabre and Fyrin. "No, I'm going to wipe you all out alone, just because I can, I think."

Siber conceded, and promptly stabbed at Helmsborough's exposed back.

Helmsborough whipped his blade around, out of the sheath, and smacked the phase knife aside violently. With an exaggerated sigh, he turned slowly to Siber, sheathing his blade again. "If that's how you want to play... I should've expected you to try backstabbing me once you had them back."

"You serious?" Joe said as he stood, dusting his pants off. "We just called a cease-fire. Do you honestly intend to continue fighting?" He adjusted the Titan's Fists threateningly as he sent a mental communique to the Djinn for backup.

"Be happy I'm killing these little pest Shadows for you. They'd follow you for as long as you had necromancers with you," Helmsborough said with a groan.
"I, for one, am totally for continuation of this cease-fire and letting him kill them!" Takeshi chimed in.

"The cease-fire has been violated and nothing is happening. Let the Shadows go or I'll keep this up, and I know you don't want me alive." He grinned wickedly. "You remember my contribution to this little altercation pretty well, I imagine."

"How, exactly?" Takeshi snapped back. "He hasn't done s**t to us, and the Shadows aren't exa-"
"The Shadows are not your concern. Why are you so caught up in them?" Helmsborough asked over Takeshi.

"The longer they stay here, the more come, right? I'm not familiar with these things, but they don't appear to be friendlies, and it's not as if they're dying fast. If you can come up with a way to obliterate all of them quickly, you won't be in violation of the pact any longer and I'll stop harping on old battles."

The pool of unlight reached out to each of the demons and humans present and moved them outside of the ring. They felt as though the whole universe was moving aside and they had stayed in place. "You're free to go," Helmsborough declared. "But I'm killing something today, so these will have to do."

"Works for me," Siber responded, stepping away. "Sorry for the altercation; I've just had enough of things trying to kill me recently," he explained to the others. He knelt by his dæmon, chanting his incantation to help speed up the healing process.

Fyrin shook his head as he was shifted; that was something he had not been surprised to see. Nor was he surprised when another Shadow burst up from the ground beside him and tried to take a chunk of his leg off. This Shadow was still outside the unlight. Fyrin tried to strike it and disable it, but it slid away, trying to cut the Achille's tendon in Siber's leg as it ran. It also made a successful pass-through on Paul, leaving Joe's jacket burned and Paul's chest exposed. He wasn't bleeding from his wound, though; the heat of the light had cauterized the wound.
The Shadow had obviously been listening to the conversation and had some idea as to how to rescue its compatriots. Disturbingly loyal, this one.
As Paul reacted to this burn, it came to his memory that his limbs were all still hacked up from Helmsborough's chains, and he remembered how difficult it was to just sit up. Even with Joe's energy, he was pretty much screwed if the Shadow came back again.
---
The other Shadows still within the unlight were looking at each other, trying to decide on a course of action. It was not coming easily. Only one had any sort of viable ideas; since it has already been established that as far as Shadows go, Sabre is the most awesome, it was therefore obviously his soul that carried this thought. It tried to pull through to the top, worming through years of twisting and burning and cutting and horrors. Eventually it succeeded, and it was the thought that they had already died once before. Twice, in fact, and they were still here. Three times would not be once too many; Sabre knew his hate was still strong enough, even if the other's wasn't. He didn't communicate this idea. It might end in betrayal, and if that were going to happen, he needed to be quiet. Very quiet.
((I'm getting surgery and I don't know when I can post. Hopefully I'll still be about, but... yeah, the signature says it.))
