I like written descriptions ;_; I always worry, when I draw from other artists work, that I'm taking something that was pure artist-style and misinterpreting it as concrete character design.

And, yeah, there's "a lot". But "a lot" doesn't make up "most of gaia", and "most of gaia" is .. well .. you know.
Most of gaia.

True. That "a lot" also charges really high prices.... *guilty*

And yeah. That's why I've never done a request thread. SO much "most of Gaia".

And Sabin... that picture:

I mean... that was soooooooooooo worth it. My baaaby *coddles*.

unfortunately, everyone doesn't feel the same passion that one as the creator does for their characters. that's the simple truth. i hate long descriptions of details i don't need to know. when i give character descriptions they are very short and get in as much info as i feel the artist needs to know in order to re-create the character. no extras.

for me, the simplest most believable characters end up being the most memorable. as an artist, those are the ones that DO interest me and i'd like to read more about. those are very rare since a lot of people insist on making their characters so unique that they make absolutely no sense in my mind. there's a lot of excess and things like that bother me. a character with a million tiny traits i have to pay attention to just gets to be too much.

6 piercings here, weird tattoo here, 10 horns here shaped this way, 4 wings, one eye this way and the other another way, a scar here, black hair with green blue and pink streaks, parachute pants that are half skirt 1/4 shorts and 2/3 parka, a kitty sidekick who travels on the main character's back and only eats ginger snaps bla etc. things like that drive me completely insane. eek

i believe that is what makes people turn away from OCs.

lol! rofl Magaly, so true! I hate drawing from obscure descriptions like that with tons of details. ugh! gonk In a contest entry I got a minor detail wrong so the contest owner PMed me saying that she couldn't accept my entry since it was off and I had to fix it so it could be in the contest. It was a tattoo on the wrong arm or something.

I think it's useful for an OC owner to have both a short, concise profile along with good ref pics for the artists, and a longer, fully drawn out one for his/her own reference. And of course, I agree with you all on the subject of overloading on unneccessary details.

If you have one or two really good visual references they should be able to get the details in just fine. If not? Maybe some people want to have OCs but over crowd them like people sometimes do with their avatars?

God, yeah. I hate that. ANd like, they have twenty pieces of jewelry that must be exactly like some reference picture, and horns in x x and y spots on their body, six wings - all different colors with specific hues, some specific tatoo you have to copy off of their ref pic, and some complex magic specific pattern on their coat... AND THEY b***h IF I MISS JUST ONE LITTLE THING. What happened to artistic liscense?! sad

I mean, duuuuude. THat's not "uniqe" that's just idiotic bordering on mean.

I really like Raesha and Sabin's characters because they've got like, certain traits that make them "them" that well, aren't hard to remember to include because there are only a few, and they give you liscense with costumeing.

I'm only particular that Rivek has his scar there (don't particular care about eye color, even) otherwise he looks like every other bishounen OC sweatdrop

Here here, (and thanks, Woe <3 )
Yeah, I try to have just enough to make it so you can tell my character from a generic person/anime character - something that makes them distinctive - and I try to find things that aren't usually overdone.

And it is a hard balance - some people make their OCs unique by piling on traits until it does get pretty ridiculous. (You see a lot of that in the furry fandom, too - "I have a tail that's nine feet long, Purple leopard spots on a blue coat, Seven different mix-matching wings, three horns, and I'm a blend of these species - oh and my markings are EXACTLY like this ref.) *shoots self* - not to say that they're all like that by any means, but like Gaia's becoming in the R/C - it's an art based community, and people want their OC/fursona to one-up everyone else and be more distinctive, but it reaches a limit.

And I am totally for having OCs that can wear different outfits - clothes don't define a person - now there can be a style of clothes that they're most likely to wear - they might even have a uniform - but by no means is that all I want to ever see them wearing. I mean, I can't think of any real person who actually wears the same thing every day XD.

Course, on the other hand (and mostly just yammering to yammer) if a description isn't utterly crazy, it is frustrating if the artist does miss things and then refuses to change. I rarely ask for anything particular from a commission beyond "Draw so and so - here's their ref page" - and I do try to have the pages easy for an artist to either just get the basic essentials, or read further into them if they're interested. And I don't mind seeing artists taking artistic liberties most of the time as long as the basic characterisic essentials are there.

But I have had instances where an artist will miss something in a description and then not want to edit it - I am all on the artists' side if there are after-the-fact "oh, can you add..." ad naseum.

At least it seems to be fairly rare, but I have heard a few horror stories about artists who had flipped out after being asked to make some corrections.

There's a difference in writing up character reference for a contest, and writing up character reference for a commission. In a contest, you aren't going to tell the person along with your references what kind of temperment they have, what kind of poses they'd be drawn in, what kind of backgrounds are suitable...
Basically your character reference work has to have everything in it that the artist needs to create a meaningful and accurate piece of art.

Huzzah for varying outfits! mrgreen

What's your take on asking to make some corrections if they miss out a very important trait/defining feature that's clearly mentioned in the profile and not hidden by a bajillion useless pieces of trivia?

I usually point it out, and if they want to fix it, they do. If not, I can fix it in photoshop (with permission, of course). Annnd sometimes I just leave it be. I guess it depends on how hard it might be for them to change it.

One guy I almost had to disqualify from my contest and just pay. He drew everyone listed in my friends section. But forgot my avatar. XD It was a great piece of art, I loved it, it ended up winning after my co-judge decided to give him an extension... but I was just looking at it, thinking, "My contest... my friends... where's my avatar?!" Apparently he thought the first character in my friends section was my avatar. ._. All is well because we asked him to fix it!

The contestant would like it better if they qualified, and you would like it better if the picture was accurate. I don't see any reason to not let them change it, but I also don't see a reason to disqualify ._.

I only ever disquialified one picture from a contest of mine, and that's because the pictures background was a "borrowed without permission" piece of 3d work. A backgroundless version of the image was entered instead and still won second place. heart

Lol, all your friends but you? That must have been such a bag of mixed emotions xd Glad you managed to get him to fix it though!

And back to the subject of contests...is there a place you could advertise a contest that's going to begin in the near future? Pump up the hype etc?

I think the only pieces I've ever disqualified were instances of art theft or blatant copying - or some people who obviously didn't bother to even read the front page and were like "O HI Here' a pic of Naruto I drew!" 9_9
