In the end, he guessed that that was what it really was; a lack of confidence in himself. He knew that he himself was safe, but could he really bear the weight of someone else's life being in his hands? And that's what it felt like, in this game; it was someone's actual life in your hands, not just their character. Sure, if it was your friend from the real world, you might party up with their new character. But if it was a stranger? You might never see them again, no matter how close you may have been before their RIP. And that brought Alyx to the Graveyard. A list of all the deaths of characters, as well as their levels, posted by players on the forums. It was a daunting list, and Alyx still saw none that were on par with him.

It seemed that Alyxandeyr was at an impasse, then. He lacked the backup to push forward with any sort of group security, and he lacked the experience to reliably count on his abilities as a tank. So what was there to do? Simple. He had enough confidence as a solo player to push forward. So he would do that. If he had to be a one-man army, then so be it. He would pierce the shroud of mystery that surrounded to Gloomwood dungeon, and he would conquer that darkness. If the forums lacked a voice, he would give them one. He would report on his findings as he journeyed forward, and he would become a legend.

His head swam with visions of himself, standing at the head of a huge army before a huge set of doors, clad in shimmering white armor and holding his blade high in the air, his cloak billowing in the wind. He spoke to his troops, a stirring speech, and pointed his sword forward as the doors opened, a billowing black fog rolling out, wrapping around his light as he shone through it, his army charging forward. If he couldn't be a group leader, then he would become a hero. A solo player who worked with groups, helping where he could. It seemed like an honorable, if lonely, path, that would seem to fit his current playstyle. He wondered how long a solo player could even make it in this game. There eventually had to be a point where the game just got too difficult, right?

Alyx tried to imagine ways that the game might be designed to encourage cooperation. He'd already run into several things that make it much safer to play in a group; swarms of mobs and that damnable effect could definitely be a part of some team-building exercise or another. He imagined mobs that could root, stun or --more terrifyingly-- paralyze and wondered how a solo player could even hope to compete. How could you survive being paralyzed if you were on your own? The question perplexed him, and an answer did not seem readily available. Being unable to move would kind of hinder your ability to drink a potion. You would almost need someone to call a crystal on you.

So what would happen to people like him --if, indeed, there were any people like him-- when (if?)... when they ran into those paralyzing mobs? They would be decimated. And, if they were leading the pack; if they were the frontline warriors, fighting by themselves... Then what would be left? The front lines would be destroyed, and the whole organism that is the community would stagnate... Or, those groups that had thrived under the vanguard's protection would rise to the forefront, and would themselves begin to lead the pack. Now that would be something to see. To see those groups and guilds rise to the occasion and take the world by storm.

Just like the good old days, it would be, then. Back when Alyx was a part of something larger than himself. Back when he was a member of one of the most powerful guilds in that game. Even then, though, he'd stood apart from those others that he played with. While they were content to play together, Alyx devoted much more time to the game, drilling and practicing endlessly in order to better himself and thus the group. The others --his friends-- played on their own sometimes, but it was mostly a group experience that they were after. Which was fine; Alyx would never fault someone for playing a social game socially. He didn't think that they needed to play more to match him, he just played more because he enjoyed it, and he could better work in his group.

Alyx' devotion to his games was often a little single-minded, really. He would allow his entire life to be consumed by the game as he dived whole-heartedly into it. Occasionally he'd need to play another game as sort of a palate cleanser, but then he was right back into it as though nothing had happened. As a result of this devotion, he was often playing by himself while his guildmates were working or playing other games. But, again, he didn't hold it against them. As an administrator, he'd been given a few beta keys to distribute, and he'd offered them to a couple people, but they were all still tied up in their old games. So Alyx held on to his keys and bided his time, until the day that he might create his own guild and rise from the shadows into the light.

Name: That's Not a Knife Questgiver: Weaponsmith Prerequisites: None Objectives: 1 post to produce a skinning knife Rewards: 1 skinning knife
The Weaponsmith is a woman wearing a heavy black apron and working a red hot ingot of metal on an anvil. As you approach her, she wipes the sweat off of her sooty brow and plunges the metal back into the forge.
"That's a fair weapon you've got there. But every good warrior needs a knife. How about we make you one? But don't expect it for free; you'll have to work for it."
Alyx had lost track of... Well, everything. He'd leveled up and just kept plugging away until he'd amassed a formidable amount of wood. Enough for six walls. Which... He guessed... Was a lot? He wasn't exactly sure how it all worked, really. But regardless, he'd leveled up! And now, at level eight, he had enough room to grow and become more powerful. He returned to the Encampment and went to get ready to go out on his next epic adventure. But first, he had a few pit stops to make. He'd read on the forums that there were a few items that would help him in his journey that he wished he'd known about before. Anyway, he went to the Weaponsmith and accepted the quest to forge a knife. He accepted the materials and went through the prompts to forge the iron ingot into something usable.

Carpentry Arte: wooden plank 5 units of wood makes 5 planks once per post.

Alyx decided that he'd probably better put those units of wood that he'd harvested to use. He had the carpentry tools and he had the wood, so he figured that the next step was transforming the wood into something that he could use. That meant planks. Lots and lots of planks. He had enough wood for thirty-two planks, and he supposed that he'd go ahead and convert thirty units of wood into thirty planks just to get a handle on things. Setting down his carpentry supplies into sort of a workspace, he opened the crafting interface and dragged his units of wood into the recipe, setting it up for five units of wood (the maximum) to be converted into planks. He had nothing to do but follow the prompts in order to work his magic.

Well that was relatively painless. He now had five planks in his inventory and five fewer units of wood. He had nothing to do with those planks save for making walls at this point, but he figured that any respectable homemaker would need to be able to build walls in order to raise a house, so it probably made sense that you would start there. Besides, how easy was it to make a wall? The answer: so easy. Lay a couple boards down and hammer them to other boards. No shaping, no tillering or even sanding if you didn't want to be particular about it. You could have a rickety wall put together with no more than a few scraps of wood.

And once you had four rickety walls? Why, you'd have a house, wouldn't you? Add a roof and you wouldn't even need a floor if you settled for dirt. A ramshackle little hut... But would Alyx settle for that? Could he settle for that? No, of course not. He wanted a grand hall in which to live, and he would get it. All it took was a little patience and the sweat of one's brow. Four walls, stained to perfection. Maybe even painted? A fine wooden floor, planed smooth and polished to a shine. A glorious home, a fine hall, a place to call home and a hold that is impenetrable and stands as testament to its king's accomplishments and legacy.

Yes. A grand and marvelous hall. Fine walls, smooth floors. Pillars and high arches. He would build a magnificent castle, and his guild would stand proud in their home, the richest and most illustrious guild hall in this entire game! Yes. Yes, that was perfect. He would endeavor to create just such a place, and he would live in it and it would be perfect in every way. It would stand testament to his accomplishments, and he would fill it with trophies and riches beyond imagination. He could see it all now. And it all started here. At the very beginning. Turning hunks of tree into planks of wood to be transformed into marvelously wonderful creations.

He wondered what he would have to construct to fill such a space. Tables- no! Table. Singular. A grand hall with a huge table, with high vaulted ceilings and tall-backed chairs ringing the table. Ornate tapestries decorate the walls, and crystal goblets sit at each place at the table. The walls decorated with trophies from their grand conquests, high, stained-glass windows shine light into the chamber. He could imagine the scene clearly. A huge, ornate chandelier hangs in the center of the room, candlelight casting its warm glow where the sun does not touch. It was perfect. He would see this through to the end. Yes. Yes, he would.

And here he was at the end of things. He was out of wood, and he now had a pretty good store of planks. Enough for three walls, at least. Which was slightly less than he figured that he needed, but that's alright; he'd just go back and harvest some more wood when he had the opportunity... Well... When he had the inclination. Because let's be honest; he had nothing but time. Seriously, nothing except free time at this point. True, he could venture into the forest to see what he could learn of the dungeon, but he still wasn't quite prepared for that. He wanted to get just one more level under his belt so that he had even more room to grow when he finally went for it all.

Alyx looked at his experience bar... He was half a level away from level nine... What to do until then, then? He wanted to get back into the action, but he knew that he had better have a reasonable cushion for getting back into a real leveling grind. Who knew how far away the dungeon was going to be? And who knew how much fighting he'd have to do once he got there? The last thing he wanted was to be forced to fight without gaining any experience for it, because who wants that? So he'd settle for chopping some more wood. He ventured back out a little way into the woods and started hunting for harvesting nodes. He'd soon found one and called out his woodcutter's axe, getting ready to start on the old grind again.
