Adjusting his grip as he wheeled down the Village path, Alec set out on a mission to make amends.
After his strong realization that he couldn't deny what he was any longer and that he should not only accept the finality of his form, but learn to live with it - and with another, so it turned out. The company made it all the more easy to pick up and move to a new place after remaining in that bottom-floor duplex for so long. The only problem was that he felt some things had been left unfinished, some lose ends, so to speak. He couldn't bare to take such a huge step forwards in his life -in what surely promised to be a 'different' experience altogether- without taking care of these things. There were people to get in touch with again and others that he definetly owed a debt to. The dragon man came to mind automatically, as the ordeals he'd uncaringly put him through in the past were unforgettable.
So the sharkboy pulled his wheelchair to a halt beyond the doorway of Zach's duplex, pausing at the base of the seemingly neverending staircase. Why the hell don't these places have godamn wheelchair ramps? For a moment the teen sat mutely in his chair, straining to stair up at the obstacle. What else could he do?
"ZAAAAAA-AAAAAACH?!"

About a minute and a half later the door at the top of the building creaked open a sliver. A single yellow eye scanned the space outside the door and, seeing nothing there, tentatively opened it further. What Alec was unable to see was that Zach had a finger hovering over the panic button the entire time. Satisfied that no one was going to ambush him right in front of his own home, he crept out. The sunlight didn't shine off his scales in any way. The stress was making them dull and even a little flaky, like some kind of terrible skin condition.
He let out a hiss-like sigh of frustration when he looked down at where the yell had originated from. Alec. Damn it, they just didn't leave him alone, did they? He put a couple claws to his forehead near where the eyepatch covered his missing eye. At least the fact that the shark couldn't make it up the stairs meant it wasn't as likely he could attack again. Once he'd bottled up the majority of his anger again, Zach took several light steps down the stairs and stopped halfway down. His tail zigzagged down the staircase. "What do you want?"

Alec waited patiently, twiddling his thumbs in his lap as he sat painfully in the sunlight. The heat really was a killer on his skin sometimes. Inhaling sharply, he prepared for another strong bellow, the soft click of the door opening causing him to exhale it all out in a huff. It was hard to see up that far but he was sure he could see movement, so the teen smile and gave a generous wave. Stupidly cheerful, this one.
He expected the dragon man to come down and meet him, seeing as it wasn't possible for him to drag himself all the way up those stairs himself. What he wasn't expecting was the poor shape the large lizard man was in once he'd left the shelter of his shadey duplex behind. His smile faded from the sight as well as the harsh inquiry, though it wasn't quite as visible on his natural shark-like mouth anyways. He was bound the be hostile. He never expected this to be easy.
"Ay." The boy curtly responded without a tinge of defensiveness. Now what was he supposed to say? He took a few moments to breathe and gahter his thoughts before opening his mouth again.
"A' neh wha ye thinkin. Bu' a' came 'ere t'say apologehs. A've been 'avin a rough time bu' thas no excuse. A' treated ye wrong an' did bad things." Alec quieted down, keeping his webbed hands folded in his lap to assume a non-hostile position. Not that he felt himself as the more dangerous of the two ever, regardless of the circumstances.

Zach continued to stare angrily down at the shark, giving no polite greeting whatsoever. While he was trying to be a little less bitter toward people who had some hope of seeing reason, he'd written off those who'd attacked him as lost causes. Alec was one of them. If he attacked once, it wasn't beyond the limits of the imagination to assume it could happen again.
The words surprised him, and immediately he was suspicious. Gaius had apologized once with an ulterior motive before, and went into a raving fit shortly after when faced with the obvious. The shark hadn't just tried to take a chunk out of his wing, though. He'd accused Zach of statutory rape. Having an ego as large as he did, he wasn't going to stand for the verbal abuse he took. He showed his teeth a little as he scanned the shark-like face for a hint of human expression to go by. He didn't accept any apologies quite yet. "Took you long enough to figure that out."
He rested an arm against the safety railing and leaned against it. "Somehow I doubt you or anyone around here is that sincere. Apologizing because you were wrong? I don't think so. What do you really want?"

Under any other circumstances Alec would've laughed. It was true, what he was saying. it'd taken him a long time to get it through his thick head that he had only lashed out at Zach in some cynical attempt to throw blame on someone for what he'd seen and experienced. It'd taken him weeks to even get his head around it and gobs of destructive behavior to both himself and others before he'd gotten the nerve to get the full story from Amaya herself. He could definetly accept the criticism but he couldn't accept the accusation that he had intentions other than the sincere admittance he'd just spoken.
"Bu' a' am!" The teen let his lower jaw go slack, giving him an awe-struck look. What else could he want from him anyways? "A' mean i'..."

Zach cut Alec off in mid-sentence. "Someone tried apologizing to me before once, but not until after they'd been... punished for something. He wasn't sorry at all and never has been."
"I'm supposed to take your word for it? I've got no reason to trust you or anyone who attacks me. You were the one who accused me of- you know, I don't even want to say it. With Amaya. You bit a hole in my wing. And you nearly murdered Aubrey once." He was pretty certain everyone had forgotten that he himself was guilty of the same, though not intentionally. Losing his eye had made him disgusted and even more hateful than before. He'd heard no word on whether there was hope of growing it back and had to assume the answer was no. It would be this way the rest of his life. He'd lost that eye to an islander like this shark, and he loathed them all.
"Why," he growled, "should I even stand here and listen to this?"

Alec sat seemingly calm during the verbal attack, allowing the dragon man to vent his rage. He had reason to be angry, distrustful, spiteful. Hell, he might've had no one to express this rage to until now, so he might as well let him get it out of his system. He was speaking truths, afterall. He was a predator, a violent creature and worst yet, he couldn't blame the incidents on his instincts. The hostage-taking, the harsh words and subsequent attack, they were all his work. The shark may have granted him the strength and the means but in the end, it was Alec Derring who had caused harm. The teen didn't want to open those flood gates of guilt but all he could do was sit back and let the old wounds re-open.
"A' learned me less'n f'messin wi' th'labs." The boy slowly began his defense, choosing his words wisely. "Bu' a' neveh go' anehthin' f'wha a' did. A' coul've gone on..." He gestured to exentuate his point. "...wi' no worrehs. Bu' a' came 'ere righ' now. 'Ere. T'say tha' a' realize a' was n' th'wrong." He paused momentarily, hoping he wasn't giving Zach any bright ideas for demanding somesort of retribution now well after the fact.
"Wha' c'n a do t'convince ye?"

Zach's anger dissipated somewhat when Alec claimed he'd learned not to mess with the labs. This was something he wished more people would figure out, but he didn't have that kind of luck. His tail writhed on the stairs in a mockery of a cat's flicking. He sounded approving, even if he was still a little bitter. "Good! You're already miles ahead of almost everyone else here."
So far, there didn't seem to be any ulterior motive on Alec's part. If he was completely serious, Zach could perhaps eventually help him to embrace his new life and disregard the old completely. It was too bad no one seemed capable of it right away, not even the shark. A life devoted to hating everything around oneself seemed hardly a life at all to him. Sabin had chided him when he'd been like that, and the doctor had been right to.
"To convince me? Not a lot of things would, given your record. Although I think I might have something in mind." As though a little more reassured of Alec's good intentions, Zach went down a couple more steps, his wings fanned behind him. He had to admit, it was difficult to stay on top of what was going on in the village now. He was sure that many people were, in their own small ways, drawing up plans for escape. It was catching them at it that proved to be difficult. He'd never seen so much as a shred of evidence of any escape plans. He'd only heard various people claim they'd find a way to escape. If such plans were being made, they were beyond him to discover. Perhaps he was just paranoid, but people had certainly tried before. There was no telling when the next time could be. Unless... "I... haven't been able to get out as much lately since I seem to get ambushed everywhere I go. I lost an eye last time, and I'd rather keep the other. I know you were one of those people who've gone after me, but I can forget about all of that if you'll just agree to do me a favor. If you could, I don't know, find out what's going on around here for me? I'd like to stay informed."
Besides, even if this didn't work, Alec still had the potential to be an ally. All he needed was some guidance.

Alec winced inwardly, expecting somesort of mockery of his genuine words. Persistance was never a trait he excelled at especially in strenuous situations but if it took all day to convince Zach that he meant him no further harm, than so be it! He'd sit in the hot sun eve, it meant that much to him.
Thankfully the dragon man seemed to be calming down some, his body language changing until he finally approached him further. His wedge-like head canted to the side as he listened, wondering what sort of "favor" the bitter man could come up with. He could just imagine the possibilities, all of which were as gruesome as he'd expect from Moreau himself. But how could even relate the two? That in itself must be a sin.
"Oh?" Marble-black eyes blinked in surprise. Keep him informed? That didn't sound so bad at all! "Sure! A' c'n do tha'..." His voice trailed off once he'd realized what he'd said, tone lowering into a somewhat hushed grimace. "Ye... lost ye eye?" How could he be so stupid to not notice? The skin wrinkled, shrivelled, sunken into the deep socket. He'd thought he was just... well, he didn't even consider it. Words failed him and the boy went silent.

"Wonderful," he grinned. It wasn't the friendliest-looking smile, but without substantial lips he wasn't able to vary them much from their usual predatory appearance. He didn't want to think of it as taking advantage of the kid, but as an opportunity for him to redeem himself. And if he tried anything stupid, well, he seemed perfectly aware of what would happen. Zach wasn't feeling up to his usual level of zealousness, so not having to explain it all over again was good.
He looked away from Alec when the subject returned to his eye, glancing over the side of the stairs instead. He placed a few fingers lightly over his left eye and noticed that he had completely forgotten to put the eyepatch on that morning. He hadn't expected to go outside, and he still wasn't used to the lack of an eye. Strange how he never got a break on missing body parts.
"Some people around here aren't content with being miserable themselves. They like to make sure everyone else around them are, too," he said quietly with a hint of a growl.

Alec wasn't sure if the dragon was taking some malicious jab at him or not, still dumbly staring in shock at the realization of Zach's injuries. And to think he'd thought he was the only one to wrong him! The wounds he had inflicted in jealous and unjust rage seemed like nothing compared to a lost eye although the realization struck him that it was actually all the same. The sharkboy's attack could have easily escilated into something that serious, he could vouch for this on account of the strong emotions he'd felt at the time. Guilt stung at the core of his spirit once again as he considered the idea, that he might've had to live with such a huge mistake. And to think that others were mistreating Zach just like that. It made him painfully guilt-ridden and somewhat imbittered and angry. It wasn't right.
"Thas no' g'nneh 'appen anehmo'." The boy suddenly muttered, as if his will alone would stop future events from ever happening. "Everhthin'll be alrigh'..." His voice trailed off as he struggled to think, shifting his wight uncomfortably in his wheelchair. His bold statement left even him feeling a bit awkward but somehow oddly consoled. "Th'labs'll take care o' thin's."
They had to, didn't they? It was their job to stop people from doing this sort of thing and more importantly with that thought, he was sure as hell not about to step into the crosshairs again. At least not to Zach; he could promise himself that much beyond the instincts of the predator within his legless body.

"I wish it wouldn't. I can't live like this, waiting for the next damn attempt on my life." He paced along the stair he was on, tail lashing nervously. He still hadn't heard anything from Sabin about growing his eye back, and it was dawning on him ever so slowly that he wasn't going to get it back. But those kinds of thoughts weren't fitting and he shoved them away as quickly as he could. He shouldn't be asking too much from the doctor.
"They are taking care of things, though," he added with a little more enthusiasm. Zach unclipped the panic button from his waist and held it up between several clawed fingers. While it wasn't something he'd show to most of the islander population, he figured Alec wouldn't get angry at the sight of it, nor could he just leap up and snatch it away. "If anyone tries to attack me now, I can get them zapped at the press of a button. At least preventing them from getting a shot in at all is something. I'd just like to find some way to keep them from even wanting to. I don't understand why they get so... so crazy."

As some islanders would feel inferior, enraged, victimized, even possibly jealous of this new gadget Zach was casual showing off, Alec was far from put off. True to his childish wonderment of all things new and interesting, he thought the new toy was kind of cool. "Ouu..." The teen cooed as his tooth-filled jaws came together to form the sound so well despite the malformities. A defense mechanism, now that was ingenious. That would have been mighty useful in preventing the loss of the dragon man's eye for sure. The idea that Zach might possibly misuse this little trick never even occurred to him, as well as the thought of stealing it away for himself.
"Handeh lil' gidget." The sharkboy nodded agreeingly, finally drawing his dark eyes away from the object in his hand. "Good on ye. Deservin'." And why not? The man had clearly been mistreated by several islanders in the past, just short of having his own personal guards following him around he now had ample protection, seeing as he clearly refused to use his natural endowments to overpower and cause harm.

Zach nodded, displaying a flash of teeth with a crooked grin. He replaced the object at his side, taking care not to accidentally press the button with his claws as he snagged it back on his belt.
"So," he started slowly. He'd been somewhat suspicious the entire time as to why Alec was apologizing. He was wrong, obviously, about Zach having done anything with Amaya. But, seeing as it hadn't been himself, it must have been someone. He'd have to be careful though. He didn't want Alec to break their little deal suddenly over this kind of personal grievance. "If you don't mind me asking, what did happen to Amaya?"

Alec pressed his lips together in a thoughtful and hesitant expression, hands in fists around the armrests of his wheelchair. He lifted himself up and let his body drop back down into the seat within a moment in an uncomfortable shift of weight. "A' d'neh if she'd be 'appheh if a' told pehple." The teen mumbled and nervously picked at a bit of shredded armrest material that was peeling from wear and tear. He let the silence fall between them, praying the dragonman wouldn't insist on knowing the full details. He wasn't sure if he could even stand recounting it, in fact, he just wanted to forget it ever happened.
"Theh was a side effect o' 'er serum." He finally managed to mumble, wondering if that small bit of info would satiate him. "'sides, she's been toucheh eveh since th'thing wi' Jamal an' th'jeep n' all.." His voice trailed off as he made a dismissing gesture, assuming himself that Zach would know enough of the story he was referring to to understand.
