A rave might be hard to make an entire ball off of.
However it would make a great room.
I'm pretty sure 'Rave' was one of the rooms in Val's Celebrations theme suggestion.
<3

TT
Angel loves that idea so much~

But has a few more things to add to it.
Since people seem to like space,
And more people want steampunk,
Perhaps change the rave into a Space Rave?
And add a room specifically for steampunk that's separate from the Victorian Tea Party?
Since I love the tea party idea...
But they seem to want to focus on airships...
And tea + giant floating things with sudden motions don't always mix,
Has another party on an airship, if they want?
Like a Sky Cruise?

AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY VAL!
<3
I HOPES YOU HAVE THE BEST BIRTHDAY EVER!
^^

raves and steampunk go perfectly together, lets have a huge cruise ship and have a rave room, we could also have your "tea party" in a more sophisticated room and all that cool stuff

>w<
That's almost exactly what I said.
Maybe I didn't phrase it well.

Unless you're suggesting that the steampunk and rave go together in one room?
Hm...
I know a little about steampunk.
Lolita's more of my thing.
But isn't steampunk more of an alternate Victorian/ industrial era type of style?
And raves have loud blaring techno music?
I would pair space and rave as opposed to steampunk and rave,
And then give the steampunk airship it's own room.

But I could be wrong in my idea of what steampunk is.
>w<
So feel free to correct/inform me, please!

hmm it seems as if the way the rooms ideas are going i think they may turn into cliques if we are not careful. I would just like to remind everyone that the ball is for meeting new people & friends, and I believe that if we become to focused on certain areas like "steam punk" (as i have heard that mentioned the most) we will either divide people drastically within the rooms (as they will want to go with their friends & partake in the theme they are most familiar with) or scare people away if we are only gearing the ball towards a particular group of people.

In saying this, I would like to see a more neutral theme, that people would be able to enjoy without going to the extreams of each end. I am not a big fan of cliques at all- we see them enough on gaia (between the forums like the GD, and GCD ect) where people cannot seem to relate to one another at all.

I would like to continue to see this as an event for all Gaians, where they can leave everything behind them, and chose a place prehaps outside of their normal, but not so much that they will not come or enjoy the ball at all.

Wow I haven't been on here in awhile. I read through all the ideas and I really like the Around the World in 80 Days theme. I think everyone could find at least one location they'd be interested in, and perhaps guests could choose to either move on to the next location or remain in a previous one (so if they love victorian tea parties they might stay in London). I also like the idea of a rave. Perhaps one destination could be Germany (cuz in my mind Germany = dance clubs = raves!)

>> Alright, brace yourselves for another uber long wall of text. XD
{{I'm finally 16! Yayness!}}

@AMK: Of course we would love to have you draw art for us. I know that Envy said that we would be having contests for things like that, but I percieve that to mean for major characters, manga, banners and thread layouts, and as a device to get more members and spread the word of the 8th annual ball. I'm sure that there will be more than enough to draw, even when we are holding contests. Additionally, I'm sorry if I confused you when I created the database for art shops, but there are always some arts that have to be commissoned each year, so I thought it best to be prepared.

@Panda: No lazyness for you, mister! I better see you doing some work for this ball! *cracks the whip*

@Bliss: I see where you are coming from, but I think that combining a large variety of themes will do just the opposite of turning people away. With more options, more people would find rooms that they had something in common with, and felt comfortable hanging out in. I see that there was a lot of talk about steampunk, but I don't think anyone was planning on focusing the ball only on steampunk. This year, we are broadening the horizons to include more themes, which will in turn include more opportunities to make people feel welcome and at home at the ball.

@Uffie: I'm loving the idea. I can really see where that would be able to be expanded into different areas, like rooms. Such as: the rabbits hole, the tea party, ect ect.

I also wanted to combine my Around the world in 80 days idea with the celebration theme, and elaborate on it a bit more, just so people could see what I percieved the ball to look like if we went with that theme.

So first, I think that everyone would be travelling together, all on the same steampunk airship. In order to give each room the same amount of time to develop, I though that for the plot, we could have the ship traveling around to different settings to drop off people at the locations they wanted, almost like a bus stopping at lots of locations and letting the passengers get off at their stop. All of the "dropping off" would happen in the first day, but people who would rather stay on the steampunk ship would just hang around in the steampunk room.
The stops could be [in no particular order]:
~In Greece for a greek festival
~In Japan for a Comic/Anime/Scifi Convention
~In America for a Carnival/Fair
~In Italy for an art exhibit at a museum
~In England for a Victorian Tea Party
~In Transylvania for a Murder Mystery themed celebration
~On the moon for a Space Rave
~On the ship for a Sky Cruise

Well, anyway, something like that. I'm braindead, so no more writing for me. And this post wasn't as long as I thought it would be. XD
Lucky you ^.~

Tempor: Okay first of all, -looks at calendar- I don't think we need to rush into voting these threads into action.

Why? Because I'm pretty sure that something that is agreed on this week might be disagreed on next week. I'd also like more than just theme ideas before we set out a vote. I'd like a few brain stormed ideas on what could be done with those themes as far as activities and such. A great theme is awesome, but if we can't think of anything enjoyable to do with that theme its likely going to be a reasonable one to go with.

Secondly, we don't even know who the ball host is yet and thus we do not know how they may want to run the ball. I can't speak for all of the candidates, but I wouldn't clear giving out an expensive prize to the person who comes up with the theme we use. I think the prize for coming up with the chosen theme is obvious-- we'd be using that theme. And how/when voting (if there is to be voting) would fall on the shoulders of the ball host who may want to get right down to picking a theme or might want to continue brain storming for more ideas.

@ Bliss: I agree, I completely agree. That was my fundamental issue with steampunk. I couldn't easily relate to the theme-- mainly because I'd never really heard about it in depth. But, that doesn't mean I'm against it so long as it can be designed to cater to a wide audience.

The PRO to a more neutral themes is typically the same people working on this ball now will not always be the same group that is working on the ball in 6 months from now.

@ The Rave idea: A themed ball/dance/party in towns/zomg, hollywood, whatever I could see. I don't see much more we could do to evolve on the idea of doing a rave. It is very possible that my idea of a rave might be different from some other people-- but after twirling so many glow sticks I don't think this theme is going to give us much more substance. Although, I imagine if we passed out enough drugs to the guests they could just as easily see a Victorian tea party on the moon. As much as alice in wonderland themes are allowed on gaia, I don't believe we can expressively point out how alice got into the rabbit hole. But, again, I won't naysay this idea completely assuming someone can enlighten me on more we could do with this theme.

@ The around the world idea : As I said before, I do like this idea. Mainly because I like the opportunity to enlighten people with a variety of culture. I even like angel's idea of giving the people the option to not re-board and stay in the place that they are in. If done right, I imagine this idea could be amazing. We would, however, need to network with a mod or mods who could be ready each day to move and sticky our new destination. I don't think this would be a huge problem if we networked with them well enough in advance on what we were doing.

@ Val: As for breaking down the idea a bit more - Japan and doing a convention there? Honestly when I think of the conventions I think of America and fawning over Japanese culture with a splash of star trek/wars and a few dominatrix roaming about. I'd much rather us find something to encompass oriental culture. Maybe even switching around your idea for japan and make it for america and have the asian destination be something like us landing into Chinese New Year Celebration or something similar. Or even a host club where people could find dates for the ball. >.>

But I do understand you were making an attempt to encompass the themes people had thrown out-- but if we do an around the world theme we want to make sure that we do not use too much Americana.

i personally think the carnival, game, and sins/virtues ideas have a lot of potential and playroom...

i was thinking for the virues/sins thing... for everyone to get to know each other better, each person should pick a combination of their favorite sin and virtue to describe themselves [ie, pride/justice]... half and half, a reminder nothing is all good or all bad.
we could even do up pictures of masks that would thus display each combination that attendees could copy and paste into thier signature...

hmmm yes i definately am taking this idea and running with it...

definately opens up a lot of oppritunity for art contests and the like.

@Val - I love it! <3 I think I liked it better when it was just Celebrations, but I think others might really enjoy the around the world theme.

@Bliss - I don't think it would form cliques! But I do think that people could meet others interested in the same type of celebrations they are. It wouldn't be that no one met new people or made new friends, it would be that everyone could meet someone in the topics they have interest in, and thus are more likely to get along with them and keep in touch afterwards. At least that's the way I see it. <3

@Envy - I really like the idea of switching the Japan and America events if we do do the Celebrations theme in the form of Around the World in 80 Days.

Val!~
You've torn me between which topic I like better.
TT
Transylvanian Murder Mysteries vs. English Victorian Tea Parties?
Their awesomeness levels are both too high to choose~
-squiggles-
Though I have to admit the Victorian Tea Parties are awesomer by just a smidge...

>> @Envy: I'm loving the Chinese New year celebration idea, it definitely shows more culture than the convention. And I think that communication with the mods would be imperative for this whole thing to work out. Also I agree that too much American stuff and some people wouldn't be able to relate. ((Sorry, I'm American, and therefore I'm more drawn towards American pastimes/activities))

@Spaced: I'm actually really liking the two-sides of the coin idea that you had. This way, the room wouldn't seem too light or dark, but instead have a balance of each.

@Angel: Oh, you flatter me too much (or my ideas at least XD)

I don't have anything to compare with for the whole organization thing, so I'm going to let people who know better than me handle that. ^_^ I will say, though, that I like the idea of having people's positions depending on their work and time devoted. People who are there and are working hard get put in places they'll do the most good that way. It just seems more practical to me.

As for the Around the World in 80 Days theme, that sounds fantastic!!! I like the idea of introducing people to different cultures (and in such a fun way!). There seems like there'll be a lot of work involved though, so we need to remember that and be ready for that. I don't mean to be a downer! I love the idea, seems like a ton of fun (personally I'd be psyched for the Chinese New Year/Host Club and the murder mystery) but trying to stay realistic. 3nodding

Oh, and also? Gaians in Wonderland? YES PLEASE!!! (One of my nicknames is the Mad Hatter, so of course I'm interested.) This one sounds like fun!
PostPosted: Wed Jul 15, 2009 10:43 pm

lol, Kaia, it's still pretty realistic. Honestly I'd go as far as saying that it would only take a week to set up a nice thread (maybe two to three if the art was really detailed). What takes the longest time is getting a group of people to all agree with how said threads should be done. :> Paint it black, no paint in pink... and before we all know it we're married with poka-dotted walls. :>

And Val I can excuse you for the Americana, I'm from the US, too. =)

Even if we did do a Chinese New Years or something of the like it'd likely have an Americana feel to it, because we're not native to that land. But just like if we were going to do a theme on Mount Olympus, we'd need to be sure to do enough back round research on the cultures to make it attempt to be more authentic. And the Around the World could very well encompass Celebrations from Cultures of around the world.

Because honestly.. we need lots of dancing. That was one thing that really confused me and many others about our last ball. It was a Ball, which people ultimately attribute dancing too-- and yet.. we really didn't have much to offer as far as dancing. -insert sad face-

While in Europe we could have a tea party by day and a rave by night. Both of these suggestions are seemingly reasonable-- but I think they would be lacking if we centered an entire day around just a tea party or just a rave. Same could be said about if we did just a host club.

And again, we must also remember to keep our theme slightly wide enough to where we can allow for people to create spin off threads.

Sorries, I'm on vacation and this is the first chance I've had more than a few minutes on the computer.

I absolutely love the 80 days around the world idea. I think we could do enough background research to pull that off. We would just have to be incredibly organized.

These are the stops written about in the novel 'Around the World in 80 Days'. Of course, we could always make our own stops. XD

-London
-Suez
-Bombay
-Calcutta
-Hong Kong
-Yokohama
-San Francisco

This idea is pretty open, considering we can leave the guests the option to stay in a 'port'. That would result in all sorts of creative stuff.

I would actually have to agree with Bliss. I think if we get much more specialized with the room interests, it could end up being very cliquey.

I'll think about some ideas, I'm getting sleepy.
