I really tried to write a comprehensive story here, so check it out if you have a stake in hoarding items.

A lot of people remix that Mountain King piece. It's in movie commercials. It's in DDR too, in that song "Dream a Dream." xd Kind of like the popular commercialized uses of Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy and the Blue Danube. (Poor Strauss and Tchaikovsky!) But Mountain King is one of those versatile pieces that can withstand all sorts of usages, and it never gets old to me.
I've yet to hear a classical piece slaughtered more brutally than Fur Elise. x___x *heard rock/metal versions in Disneyland and on TV and wanted to cry*
That Goldfrapp song is pretty. <3

Aldo Lady Pyre You should look up their video "I Don't Care" on Youtube. It's not being friendly with me right now. The video is nifty, but I prefer the songs where they don't have a guest vocalist. It just distracts from the instruments. I like their "Hall of the Mountain King." I think it's actually a classical piece (sounds like a metal title, though), but they make it heavy. Yes, Hall of the Mountain King is a classical piece, feel ashamed for not knowing that. razz It was composed by Edvar Grieg for the opera Peer Gynt. The most famous version around here is the hardcore house version by Thunderdome. ... Why yes, I do know too much about music some times. redface Goldfrapp is smoooooooth, I like. biggrin Apocalyptica I've heard before, it's uh kitsch, but fun kitsch. Geez. Sorry my school had a shitty music program. rolleyes Considering Apocalyptica started off covering famous metal bands, it's not that hard to get confused. Rainbow has a song by the same name. And seeing as I only listened to Dio when he was with Sabbath and Dio... And okay, so Apocalyptica covered thrash, not power. But honestly I was half asleep when the blasted song came on and the title SCREAMS "epic metal." Which again, I know they like the thrashy crap, but that doesn't make them kitsch. crying

Haha. Have any of you guys ever watched the Brain Wall (or "Human Tetris") game show from Japan? Looks like the UK/America/Australia have adopted their own version, Hole in the Wall. (By "adopted" I mean they borrowed everything down to the competitor's costumes.) I love Brain Wall, I can't believe I've been missing out! Hmm. Do "Westerners" get equally offended when they're called Westerners as Asians when they're called Orientals?

I like Hole in the Wall! I mean, does anyone ever think about how they can move their body in a certain position to get through a hole in the wall? I think not! haha
I don't get offended. That's an interesting thought, though, Sirius. 3nodding

Sirius Silverstar Hmm. Do "Westerners" get equally offended when they're called Westerners as Asians when they're called Orientals? I don't get offended being called a westerner. Hell, I don't think I'll get offended by what you call me. Well minus my nickname my family uses for me, but I'm not offended by it, I just hate it. confused Are you offended being called that, as you fall onto that side? What exactly brought this up?

Haha, Joe the Plumber is not a plumber. razz Sirius Silverstar Hmm. Do "Westerners" get equally offended when they're called Westerners as Asians when they're called Orientals? Oh god, my favourite subject. razz Orientalism is a term used to describe the stereotypical image we from the west (the Occident) have of people living in the Middle-East. We have this image that everyone living there is very sensual, hotheaded and prone to blow up in a public mall. Edward Said has written a few books about it and has a huge influence in the discourse about this subject. I don't think Asians are ever called Orientals... chinks, japs, curries and pindamen is a lot more popular. I guess that the stereotypical image we have is that of a yellow man with huge teeth and small eyes with a straw hat and a samurai sword yelling profanities. And yes I would get pissed if someone said I was a racist pig-eating decadent imperialist.

I've never heard the word "Oriental" used to describe anyone from the Middle East. It's usually Chinese, Koreans, Vietnamese, etc. I don't think it's really used much anymore, though, except by older people. And I think it's an unintentional offense. The other terms you mentioned are much more popular as far as derogation goes.

I guess you can apply the term to whatever region in 'the east' you can think of. As long as the sun pops up in the sky in that general direction you're golden. razz

Aldo And yes I would get pissed if someone said I was a racist pig-eating decadent imperialist. Haha, that's exactly what I was wondering. Does it have a bad connotation like the term Oriental does? Old people are funny. They have the sweetest intentions, but sometimes they don't realize... the things they say or do when they're trying to be friendly. xD
