"It's not like I'd give you something I didn't think you'd like," Carlos muttered. "You made me that card because you knew it was my birthday and you thought I'd like it, right? Why can't I do the same kind of thing for you?"

"I made you the card because I couldn't just ignore your birthday, you seemed like the type of person who would get upset if someone you knew forgot it, alright? I didn't even know you would like it." Adrian crossed his arms and leaned against the counter. "I, on the other hand, don't like gifts and I don't celebrate my birthday, the end."

"The point is that you liked it? When it wasn't meant for you to. It was meant only to show that I still thought of you, that's it!" Adrian shrugged. "Fine, if you want to leave, I won't stop you. Just go." The rat turned way from Carlos, not wanting to see the other's body language any longer.

(( Okay, Jimi is not allowed, short of an act of God, to be here. So I will kick Adrian's a** for him. And set fire to his hair. And spit in his soup. And tie him up and feed him to the slugs. And and and! D< ))
The point was that it didn't matter what it was, Carlos would have liked it no matter what because it was Adrian. It meant that he cared, or that was what he had thought. But all of this right now only showed that nothing had really changed. Everything always seemed to start out wonderful but it fell apart in the end. The fact that Adrian had sent the card at all was an inadvertent act of cruelty. He doubted Adrian had intended it that way, but it left Carlos feeling like a yo-yo. Just like always.
He left the kitchen without a word. He was already out the front door when he paused. He almost said something but what was the point, really? Instead he simply closed the door behind him.

Adrian stood there as Carlos walked out of the kitchen. He waited to hear the front door open and close before turning around again. What had he done? He didn't want to hurt Carlos, again, but did it anyways. Why did he always do this? Why couldn't he just accept the good in his life?
He stood there thinking before making a decision. The rat ran out of the kitchen and out the front door, hoping to catch Carlos. He wasn't going to let the unicat just walk away this time, like he had times before, he didn't want to lose him again. "Carlos! Wait..."

(( *stabs Adrian, stabstabstab* D< ....Oh wait I was going to make him suffer. Hm... redface sweatdrop *hides knife in Adrian's hair and walks away whistling* ninja ))
Carlos actually hadn't made it very far. It's difficult to move quickly when one's vision is clouded with tears. The air around him burned his eyes but it was all he could do to keep them from falling. Then he heard what he had never expected to hear, Adrian's voice. It was enough to make him stop but he refused to turn around. If things got loud and ugly, anyone in the vicinity would see if not hear everything.

Adrian saw Carlos stop and ran up to him. He noticed the unicat didn't turn around, which was reasonable and expected. "I'm...sorry, okay. Just, don't leave yet." The rat wanted to explain, but didn't want to do it in the middle of the hall. "Please."

"Why should I?" Carlos countered, voice low and gravelly with barely-checked emotion. He was visibly shaking and he really didn't know what he was going to do.

Adrian moved closer to Carlos, but still gave the unicat some space. "Because I'm sorry, and...I love you...and I'm trying to change for you, please don't leave yet," he said in a voice just loud enough for Carlos to hear.

"You know, it's getting really difficult to believe that, even for me," the unicat managed to grate out. There were so many things he could say right now that would ruin everything. Everything was already ruined. He just was not the kind of person who says everything on his mind just because it's burning a hole in his head. But at least for Adrian's sake he was still standing there instead of continuing to walk away like he was going to do. Never mind that he still wouldn't turn around, was shaking alike a leaf, and his ears were literally brushing his own shoulders.

Adrian stepped back. He really screwed it up this time. "Alright, fine. You can go, if you want. I won't make you stay. But I really am sorry and I realized I don't deserve your forgiveness or your attention any longer." He turned back around and started heading back to his place. He should have known it would have turned out like this. It was stupid to follow Carlos and hope things could be fixed.

Carlos heard Adrian's retreating footsteps. He found himself turning halfway around but he couldn't look up at the rat. If he did he knew that he'd completely lose it. "Why does this always happen? Things are going so well and then you just push me away. You know I don't want to go. And then you change your mind and drag me back. Or you do like today and you change your mind again. 'Oh, never mind, Carlos.' It's like you can't decide if you want me around or not. But you know I keep coming back because I keep thinking things will be a little different. That you'll accept me the way I try to accept you. I don't always understand you but I try to work with you because people are supposed to work things out. But whenever I try to do something nice for you you always push me away. I don't know what to do. I know what anyone else would say. They'd say I should just leave."
But he couldn't just leave, in fact, if he tried he would find his feet cemented to the floor, unwilling to move. He had never given up on anyone, except for his family who had never even tried. But this just kept happening; how many times could he break before there would be nothing left to heal? His face was buried in his fists. Tears burned into the palms of his hands where his claws clenched and cut into the skin. He almost hoped Adrian had actually left and hadn't heard all that. He hated being so sad and pathetic. Why couldn't he be more like Jimi?

Adrian stopped when he heard Carlos talking. The unicat was right. He was a horrible person, but he's trying to change, which is why he went after Carlos in the first place, but even that made things worse. He cared about the unicat and hated that fact that he couldn't show it and that he couldn't accept Carlos being so nice and giving to him.
He heard Carlos start crying and turned around, walked over to him and pulled him into a hug, hoping the other wouldn't pull away. "I do want you around, okay. I want you to stay, but I don't want to force you into doing something you don't want to do, which is why I won't make you stay if you don't want to. But I want you to, I really do. And I'm sorry, it's hard for me to accept you being so nice without thinking that you might have alternative motives, even though I know in my heart, you would never do that."
