"I figure I'll never know until I try." She stood up and slowly walked to the window. Running her webbed fingers along the edge she sighed softly. "Amaya.... I know it's dangerous. I've been afraid of water, especially the ocean almost my whole life. I have had plenty of time to contemplate the dangers of that alone, and lately I've added Moreau to those fears."

She glanced over her shoulder to the lizard. "But the manta says theres nothing to fear. I've been in the lake enough to not fear all of the things I had been afraid of. I know how to swim properly, I know how to use my trans to my advantage. I've got to try.... If there's a chance to make it. To save Rex and Avery. Maybe find a cure for all of us Amaya.... I have to take it, despite the risks. This has to stop."

She turned back to her friend with a passion in her tone. "How many more people does Moreau have to hurt? How many more have to be taken from their homes by a trick or half truth? How many people have to be duped here? I can't let this continue.... I can't let him keep doing this to people. Good innocent people..." Not even Antony deserved this and Awen knew it. She sighed heavily and let her arms drop to her sides. "I have to try."

Amaya watched the manta in silence, her head following her as she walked to the window then back to her. She did very much envy Awen for her determination... her courage.

She stood, pushing her chair away in front of her and walked over to the older girl. For once she didn't hesitate to give her a long hug. Her head nodded, the hat on her head shifting slightly. "Be careful..." The worry was evident in her voice.

The manta carefully wrapped her webbe arms around the lizard slowly and held her tightly. She was very warm and even with scales it felt comforting to have her support.

"I promise." She almost whispered and pulled away to look into Amaya's eyes. "I promise I'll be careful. If it gets to be too much, too dangerous I will turn back. I swear. I'm just going to try."

Amaya pulled back as well, allowing her large hands to drop at her sides. She looked into Awen's eyes and nodded again. Even though she was worried about her friend's safety... she couldn't argue with her reasoning. She had to try. Awen might be the only one who could get off the island and help everyone.

"I'll be fine. I promise." She grinned and patted the girl's shoulder before slowly going to grab her water bottle. She took a big gulp and sighed softly. "But I think I'm gonna head out... this is starting to get too much for me."

She smiled sheepishly. She didn't want to hurt her feelings or anything but...it was just too hot for the manta.

Amaya nodded in understanding and followed her, opening the door awkwardly with her fingers. "It's okay. Just... come by when you come back?" She asked with pleading eyes, her form in a postion behind the door so Awen would see her but any passerbys couldn't.

"Will do." She gave Amaya a broad grin as she stepped out of the door. "I'll be fine I promise. Just take care of yourself. And try to get a little sun hm? A great gal like you shouldn't be all locked up and away."

She waved a little bit and turned strolling down the duplexes. She couldn't believe her passion and confidence either. These changes had inspired confidence where she didn't expect. But Awen wasn't sure if it was from the manta or not. Just the fear if water being taken away....everything didn't seem as bad anymore.

She could do this...

Amaya gave a small wave back as the manta left. "Bye..."

And once she was out of sight, she closed the door slowly and went back to her bed to bask. She had a lot to think about...

Attraction?
(Amaya encounted Rex after his first change and meets Zach)

Amaya Vaughan
Amaya sat up in bed with a gasp as a scream reached her ears. Blinking she looked around in the darkness... Had she been dreaming? It kind of sounded like... Rex. Her brow furrowed and she was about to lay back down when another scream reached her duplex. "Crap!" Jumping out of bed she threw on a top and a sarong over her panties before running out the door.

The days of hiding spent in her room had been forgotten now that Rex might be hurt... or worse, changing. She jogged down the line of duplexes towards the ones on the end where Rex had first seen his own duplex.

"Rex!" She could see him in the early light of the morning, thankful that the tropical weather was welcoming even when it was this early. Though she didn't see the man on the other side of him.

Rex Vadnais
When Zach sprung awake Rex jolted back. He felt like a monster as the man screamed for him to get away. "Zach.. It's me, don't worry." He said, sighing. He came to his feet and offered a hand for Zach to get up. He tried not to think about the fact that he was any different than he was a few hours ago, but every time he saw his hands, Rex had to do a double take.

Then he heard a voice, Rex turned and saw the green figure jogging their way. "Amaya..." he sighed, realizing that he'd just gone through the same awful experience that he helped the girl go through a few days prior. He ran to the girl and embraced her in a hug, "How do I look...?" he said. Half serious and half joking, hoping to lighten the mood as the sun was lighting the morning sky.

Zachary Bloodstone
Zach grabbed the hand and pulled himself up to his feet. He felt... pain? Something sharp pressed into the back of his hand, and the oily feel of blood was running down it. Couldn't be his. When Rex's padded hand released his own, there were four neat punctures. He stared, saying nothing. He didn't even look at Rex, who was a far more bizarre sight.

He only looked away from the cuts to see a large green lizard come over, who was immediately hugged by Rex.

His mind faltered a little at that. It kind of stopped at green. He looked back at the blood, which was now winding its way slowly down to his fingertips. Back to the talking pair.

The lizard sounded like a girl. His mouth hung open a little as he tried to find something to say. Finally, he found something. His voice followed far too slowly after his thoughts.

"You're green."

She is green, he repeated to himself again, astounded. If he knew better, he'd say she was not only green but covered in scales. Huh. Who'd have guessed? What a weird place to wake up.

Amaya Vaughan
The iguana girl ran straight into the embrace, hugging him tight. She looked up at him, the frown on her face evident... though it wasn't disgusted or shocked, it was sad. Amaya had never wanted him to go through such a thing.

Though then she smiled. A genuine smile as she patted his now furry chest with a scaley palm. "You look the same, don't worry." His eyes did seem more... well, exotic and attractive, but it wasn't enough to set him any different then he had been moments before.

Amaya frowned once more, looking up at him. She still hadn't noticed Zach. "I'm sorry... are you still hurt?" She then pulled away from the hug, not wanting to touch any sore spots that might've been on him.

You're green.

Green eyes shot open and looked around Rex at the man standing behind him. Her tail swished across the ground behind her and she used the newly changed man as a sheild. Mouth locked up she simply stared back, the urge to run and hide rising by the second.

But no, Rex might need her help to get through his first change. She... she had to stay, despite her mind's screaming.

Rex Vadnais
Rex pulled a hand away from Zach's and saw the four small puncture wounds, "Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry!" Rex said, fussing over the blood, though his hands were bloody as well. But stopped to think when he saw the glazed look on his face, "Um.. ar-" he cleared his throat, trying to sound strong as usual. It returned to it's usual deep tone and he continued, "Are you all right?"

Rex hugged Amaya tight and chuckled, "The same? Only a little hairier than before." He chuckled, looking at the transformations in a positive light certainly helped make him feel better about the changes. Sometimes a little joke made everything better. "I'm not hurt now that it stopped. Just a little sore." the blood continued to drip from his fingers and splatter in a red death on the ground, but eventually came to stop. "Mostly my butt.." He turned, trying to look over his shoulder at the newly formed tail, he'd have to be careful not to sit on it or something. "What animal do you think?" It wasn't the sea lion that Rex had hoped for, but he knew it was something fuzzy, and that meant he wasn't a lizard like Amaya. What did Rex have to look forward to?

Rex turned to look at Zach's rude comment, "Yeah, she is. So what?" He replied sharply, turning to hug Amaya again. Don't mess with my friends.

Zachary Bloodstone
The weird feeling he'd had clouding his brain since he'd been woken up had slowly been dissipating. He'd stood up too quickly, he figured. Something else was wrong. Looking at the man with sharp teeth and a tail was not in the least bit scary... he couldn't recall the transformation. Rex hadn't always looked so furry.

His hand hurt. He pulled his hand back from Rex and wiped it against his robe, gritting his teeth against the sting. He pieced together what had happened a little more, figuring something had thrown him into shock. "Just dizzy..." Ouch. Thank goodness he hadn't been paying attention to those cuts a few moments ago or he-

Zach looked up again. Rex didn't look too happy with him. He knew he'd said something earlier... something about green? He took a step back, wondering what he'd done while he'd been unable to think clearly. He peered over at the lizard, Amaya, who was caught in Rex's hug. His mind did a double-take.

Lizard.

"She's...uh..." He didn't really have much to say. She was a lizard. Yes. Very observant. Rex had freaking claws. Zach faltered as he took more and more steps away from them. His fearful nature had crept back into its rightful place. "I'm just going to leave now..."

Amaya Vaughan
Amaya was snapped away for a moment and looked at Rex's a**. If she was capable of blushing, she probably would have. "Uh..." She stared at the new limb for a moment, only one animal came to mind. "A lion?" She asked more then stated.

Though then when he defended her and hugged her again, she could feel the heat in her body pushing at her cheeks even though it didn't show. The girl hugged him back, wacthing Zack and burrying half of her face into Rex's chest.

A deep, sad frown formed at Zach's unfinished sentence and she turned her head to look away, half of it still burried into the bright blonde fur.

She's a monster. She's bald. She's green and covered in scales. She looks like something from an old black and white horror movie. As each sentence formed in her mind she could feel the tears starting to work their way to the brims of her eyes.

Rex Vadnais
Rex held Amaya tight in his arms, gingerly wiping a tear from her eye. "Here, let's start over!" he said, keeping his arm around her shoulder, but openeing up to Zach. "This is Amaya. Amaya, this is Zachary." He said, motioning to the person when he said their name. Speaking still sounded a little twisted with Rex's new canines, but he ignored them and continued to speak as usual.

He turned to Amaya, the image from his dream coming back to him once more. The strong creature... now that he thought about the little that he remembered, it did make sense. He repeated her words, "A lion? ..Wow." He was in shock. The whole time he was thinking too bad about the situation. He deeply thought he was going to change into something much worse, like a toad or some ugly bug. But a lion? Suddenly he was even more excited about his change than before.

Zachary Bloodstone
Zach stopped walking backwards. He put a a hand up to wave, fingers slowly curling back down as he pulled back. She looked offended by his practically unsaid sentence, to the point of tears. Again, he felt like running. What could he say to her that wouldn't make her feel worse? Rex seemed more in charge of the situation, so perhaps he could sort things out.

Cautiously he moved back closer to their group, overhearing the animal they presumed Rex had become. Yes, Rex's tail did have the telltale appearance of a lion's tuft. The guy was downright ecstatic. Zach frowned.

"So, Amaya," he started. He didn't want to look Amaya in the eye, he felt guilty. He'd have to keep the conversation off of her... appearance. "How long have you been here?"

Amaya Vaughan
The lizard girl shifted in the arm still around her, staying close to Rex since she felt safe, comfortable... and accepted depite her horrid apperance by him. Green eyes stayed on the ground as the sun started to rise over the trees and buildings, illuminating her scales and warming them up.

She didn't meet Zach's eyes either, her tail giving a twitch behind her. "I... uh..." How long had she been here? It took her a moment to think. "... Seven months, I think." Wow, it had been that long?

Rex Vadnais
Rex smiled, glad he'd semi-mediated the situation as he kept Amaya close to him. He watched the sunrise as well, this was the first time that he'd seen it since he'd come to the island. And boy, was it beautiful.

Happy that Zach didn't flat out leave when he addressed him, he nodded to the man, telling him to come back and be a part of the conversation. "Seven months? Wow, that's quite some time." It was good to get off the subject of Amaya change in a negative way. She was still the same Amaya he'd met on the beach that fateful morning.

Zachary Bloodstone
The sunrise announced the break of another day on this trap of an island. Zach looked away from the bright light. He couldn't get over Amaya's obvious swishing tail. Every transformed individual he met was a scare. Would it ever end...

He came a little closer, unsure of himself. The number was shocking. This island experiement had been active for at least seven months! He shivered. Oh dear, Amaya probably thought it was because of her. His right hand, still bleeding a little, immediately gripped his left shoulder. A nervous habit. He was definitely nervous. It felt awful, but at the same time, it felt natural.

He glanced over at the mountain. "So no one's escaped, huh?"

Amaya Vaughan
"Yeah..." Amaya looked up at Rex with a tiny smile. "It's okay though. Aside from the... changing. I don't mind it here." She had nothing left to loose when she came here anyway.

"Escaped?" Green eyes drifted up to Zach, oblivious of his missing limb. Missing something like that was the least of her concerns. "Not that I know of. There were a handful of people already here when I was brought here. None of them mentioned escape..." She trailed off for a moment, looking down. The poor guy would probably never get off... just like Rex and Avery. "The entire island is bugged with cameras and microphones. Not to mention Moreau can put us to sleep with a single word." It was like being a trapped animal... literally.

Rex Vadnais
"Gosh, I'm sorry about the bleeding thing." He blushed, taking his arm away from Amaya and gesturing to let him see the punctures. "Maybe we should get these cleaned up. I mean.. I've got my duplex right here" Plus he wanted to see how different he was, touching his new fangs lightly.

Escape? The thought percolated in his head. Would the escape with Amaya still work? Thankfully his mind was preoccupied with worrying about the harm he'd caused Zach, "gosh I'm so sorry sorry sorry.." He mumbled under his breath."

Zachary Bloodstone
The changing... wow. He wasn't happy he'd seen Rex transform, but there was no more proof necessary. There was no act. There wasn't a hope left to cling to there.

He listened to Amaya's words, nodding. He just wanted to be sure... he was pretty much asking everyone these days. He was addicted to hope, it seemed. His eyes grew wide at the mention of the cameras and microphones, though. NO. Just... no. Impossi- well, not impossible. On this island, nothing was impossible, unfortunately. The limits of science had been bent, broken, and replaced with something entirely different. The magic word issue he'd heard about, but he was still skeptical of it... not that there was a reason to be skeptical any more.

He politely turned down Rex's offer. "No, no, I'll be fine. Really." The bleeding had slowed to a slight trickle, though there was a reddish tinge to his skin around the punctures. He held up his hand to let Rex look, though. Maybe the damage he had done would open the lion-man's eyes to the negative side of the transformation.

Amaya Vaughan
The iguana girl hadn't noticed Zach's hand bleeding until Rex mentioned it. Blinking, she looked down at the blood and wondered how the lion had possibly hurt him. Claws, probably. "Yeah, you should go wash it off... I think every duplex has bandaids and stuff." She said timidly.

Awen Zyn
Awen stormed up to the duplex and was going to slip the note under Rex's door but paused. Amaya Zach and Rex were all outside. She took a deep breath and kept walking forward. She seemed angry, the usually greyish toned skin was a little red. She paused before Rex and handed him a note which read:

Quote:
It's time. I'm not waiting anymore. Once I'm gone please tell everybody. Especially Chubbs and Jamal.... I'm heading off the beach by the beach bar, just to give you an indication.

Bye Rex,

Awen

P.S. Wish me luck.

And with that the blue haired girl was gone. She turned on her heel and trodded purposefully off to the beach.

Rex Vadnais
"Mmm.." Rex groaned, examining the damage he'd done. "Yeah, I can't leave this alone. Let me get some neosporen and bandaids." He turned to run into his duplex really quickly but was intercepted by an infuriated Awen. "Awen.." He said, but before he could say any more a note was crammed in his hand. He looked up, making sure that the others couldn't see.

He read it quickly, though he knew what it said before she gave it to him. She's leaving... Rex looked at the girl, storming into the sunrise. He wanted to follow her SO BADLY, but he knew this was something that she had to do for herself. He'd had similar moments, there was somethings that you had to do on your own. "Bye Awen..." he whispered. His eyes welled up, but he had to stay strong. Wiping them from his face he clenched the note tight in his fist since his boxers didn't have any pockets. "So!" Rex sniffed, trying not to cry, "Lets go inside." He turned quickly, trying to hide his tears until he knew that Awen had time to swim off.

Zachary Bloodstone
Zach couldn't really reject the help from Rex and Amaya at this point. He glanced around a lot. Cameras... everywhere? Oh man, if he hadn't been insane earlier... he couldn't see any cameras for sure, and didn't want to feel more like an idiot searching for them, so he followed Rex.

Awen looked pissed. He didn't say anything to her, fearing the possibility of a vicious temper. Her note saddened Rex, however. Zach's mind raced. What could she be doing?

Amaya Vaughan
"A-!" The girl smile but then it faded just as quick when Awen simply handed something to Rex and turned back around. "-wen..." She stared in shock, wanting to go after her and see what was wrong. Green eyes glanced at the note handed to Rex... she knew what the manta was going to do. Amaya watched as Awen stormed off. Stay safe, Awen... Slowly she followed the two into Rex's duplex, a strange swaying swagger in her step due to her tail.

Rex Vadnais
He walked into his duplex with his back turned to the others before they could say anything else, wiping the last tears from his eyes. "Just make yourselves at home!" Rex called over his shoulder.

He headed straight into the bathroom, but became distracted. Something else looked at him from the mirror in the bathroom. He leaned over the sink, looking closer at the changed reflection. Those vicious canines were now his. The dark lines around his eyes? His. The newly formed beard and thicker chest hair? His. He looked at his hands below. The dark callouses created pads, it was hard for him to close his hand completely. And the blood that encrusted his fingertips stained the claws where his fingernails once were.

"Uhh.. Bandages!" Rex's Reflection got him distracted, but he opened the medicine cabinet and pulled out a few big band-aids, the neosporen, and a medical wipe, then came into the main room. "Ready?"

Zachary Bloodstone
Zach stood awkwardly near the door. One of the reasons he prided himself on not getting injured all the time was saving himself the pain of rubbing alcohol and other disinfectants. Cuts were categorized with shots as things he truly hated, though they were all unavoidable. He was a little glad he'd been so out of it when he'd been cut, or he would probably have yelled. He didn't want to embarass himself in front of these people.

"Hardly," he admitted. The hand did hurt a hell of a lot; he couldn't scratch at the cuts. He took a few more steps in, careful to avoid Amaya's tail as it moved around the floor.

Silently, Zach cursed disease in general, and held his hand out to Rex again to let him take care of it. He was the one with all the supplies. Please, please, please don't sting as bad as I think it will.

Amaya Vaughan
Amaya walked into the room, not as cautious of her tail as Zach was. She was still getting a hang of it anyway. Green eyes looked around the room, her large pink tongue flickering to take in scents and... emotions. Wow, Zach smelt very nervous.

"You okay?" She turned back to look at him, for once making eye contact.

Rex Vadnais
Zach looked scared out of his mind, but Rex just chuckled. If he'd lived through turning into a lion, then Zach would just have to live through a little sting. "Okay, might hurt a wee bit" He rubbed the disinfecting wipe gently a few times across the puncture holes. They bubbled slightly, but that was good. It meant it was working! "The worst is over, now..." He squeezed a little neosporen onto his finger and dadded the wounds fragilely, trying his hardest not to irritate them more. He only needed two band-aids to cover all four of the holes. With the applications of the last one he said, "All done." and smiled friendlily.

He blinked his emphasized eyes and sat down on the bed, "OW!" He was up faster than a rabbit on a hot greasy griddle in the middle of august. He sat on his tail. "Ahh, the tail.. got to get used to that. He slid his rump carefully onto the bed, his tail wagging minutely, difting side to side.

Zachary Bloodstone
He glanced over at Amaya. The tongue... ohhh. "I'm... surviving." Truthful enough.

He closed his eyes as Rex began disinfecting, though soon it became more of squinting to keep tears from coming out. The stinging was unbearable, hurting far worse than the actual cuts had - or so he kept thinking. He didn't really remember that moment as anything but a strange haze. "Ow-ow-ow, careful!" he hissed, gritting his teeth. When Rex had finished, he pulled his hand back, sliding it into his robe pocket while he waited out the fiery burning.

He watched as Rex leapt up after sitting. His tail... hurt? So the changes weren't just sudden and over. Even less to look forward to. Again, he failed to imagine himself in the same situation as Rex, helplessly changing into some kind of animal.

It was his last comfort.

Amaya Vaughan
The girl watched silently as Rex tended to Zach's wounds, but jumped once the exclaimation reached her ears. Her head darted over to him to make sure he was okay. She had never really had that problem... when she first got her tail it didn't curl underneath her... and now it was too big to even think about it. Without thinking it slid from side to side on the carpet, giving a light tap to one of the bedposts. Amaya winced, not liking the feeling that her tail was... that long.

Wait... Rex was in his boxers. Oh jeeze. She adverted her gaze from him quickly to look around the room. It was rude to stare.

... Why was she staring anyway?

Rex Vadnais
Rex's tail only hurt because it was still sore from the fresh changes and he'd just forgotten he had a tail now. It wouldn't hurt so bad in the future.

He was still holding Awen's note, but got up and set it on the nightstand and went back to the bed. He didn't give his nakedness a second thought, it was just his body. So what? Now giving his tail a bit more recognition, he laid back on the bed with his arms behind his neck and looked up at the ceiling, sighing.

Zachary Bloodstone
Zach looked around the duplex. It was oddly the same as his own. It reminded him, he needed to meet his neighbor downstairs. He hadn't seen any signs of life around that duplex.

"What are you going to do now, Rex?" He asked cautiously. The guy seemed to be contemplating something. "You're part of this island now..." Forever.

He really wanted to see the note, but it wasn't his to look at. Ah well. If he couldn't see the note, he'd just see if he was part of their circle of trust. Doubtful. Plus, the cameras and microphones were always watching.... This would be a great time for a code language, if that could be pulled off.

Amaya appeared to be uneasy too. What were they hiding?

Amaya Vaughan
Well, Rex seemed very... comfortable in his boxers. No big deal. Amaya went to scratch her head, but paused when her claws touched nothing but scales. A shudder went down her spike-covered spine and she dropped her hand again. Her head could itch for all she cared.

Green eyes looked from Zach back to Rex. There was the same sad look in her eyes and she looked at her large feet. Even though she didn't want to say it outloud... she knew Zach had a point.

Rex Vadnais
Rex sat in silence as the question seeped into his head. But the silence was eventually broke by, "Enjoy it." He sat up and looked a the ground, not bothering with their reactions. "If I can't change my future, then why not be happy with everything that I have...?" He sighed quietly, then looked up at Awen's crumpled note, "I mean, if you don't make the best of it, then you're just going to be living in misery for the rest of forever. And I don't know about you, but I don't want to be in agony for my whole life." It sounded sappy and optimistic, but he sincerely meant it. Rex wasn't one to lie, end of story.

As he sat up he saw Amaya look away quickly, chuckling quietly. "Comfortable?"

Zachary Bloodstone
He caught Amaya's eye as she looked, carefully noticing the sadness in her movements and expression, despite the heavily lizard features. Poor, poor girl. And transformed in such a short time...

Zach twitched at the words. He'd suspected the guy of an opinion like that. But maybe he'd been wrong originally. Rex had a good point...

"But that doesn't mean to give up." His eyes narrowed a little. "There's bound to be a reversal to this. To what happened to both of you. I mean, those doctors probably would take precautions against themselves getting a dose of their own medicine. And escape! We just have to keep... trying..."

He realized how much of an idiot he sounded like when he began to trail off. Amaya... she'd been here for seven months... and no one had escaped in that time. He shifted uncomfortably.

"Never mind. I don't know what I'm talking about." Rex was right; make the best of it. Why couldn't he?

Amaya Vaughan
Once again, the lizard girl probably would have blushed a little. "I'm alright." Though her toes were starting to hurt from standing on them. She wasn't sure if she should lower herself or not... if she did, it would probably look like she was falling. All five inches her feet had created.

She nodded once he was finished. "Thats how I thought about it... and I still do in a sense. It's just been... hard." Amaya fidgetted with her large fingers, a nervous habit she had developed while on the island.

"No, it's okay." She gave a tiny forced smile at Zach. "Just because no one has escaped doesn't mean it's impossible... it just takes time and a lot of thought." Her mouth opened, revealing sharp teeth before she started talking once more. "I'm glad Moreau picked me to come here instead of someone else. I don't have anything to loose. But others... they have a family. I just wish he would only take people like me." Amaya frowned again, shifting on her feet a little.

Rex Vadnais
Rex called her bluff, "No you aren't!" He said, grinning wickely at his girl, "Take a load off!" he patted the bed next to him, still blissfully unaware how awkward he was making them feel since he was just in his boxers. "Glad to know I'm not the only one with that philosophy."

Rex's smile turned solmn as Amaya spoke about her past. He remembered what Joliette said about her being adopted or something. But he didn't want to push it on her, she'd tell him when she was ready.

Rex yawned, the transformation had sure frazzled him from his sleep. He sure looked like a mess, but who cares about appearance. Alot of people? Ahh well.. "It's getting late.. er.. early? I dunno.. anway, I think I ought to shower and then get some breakfast..." He trailed off on the end.

Zachary Bloodstone
"Good idea," Zach nodded. He didn't really feel that comfortable here with the pair of them. "I'll just head back to my duplex and get back to sleep."

He quickly made for the door. Before he left, he turned around in the doorway. "Rex, Amaya?" he called. He wasn't sure if the lion-man would even look up. "I'll find us all a way off of this island. I don't care how long it takes."

And the clock starts now...

He left without another word, stumbling a few times. Maybe he was coming down with something. Oh well. He'd had a pretty hard fall not a while ago. Better to get some sleep in before morning really came.

Amaya Vaughan
Amaya smiled at him with a nod. Rex was probably still sore and hungry from the transformation. "Okay. Take care then... I'm in duplex 22 by the way. If you need me." It was more of an invitation to visit. She didn't get many and didn't leave her room very often anymore.

With a smile and a headbob to Zach as her left, she started to the door as well. "See ya Rex." She looked back at him with one of her rare genuine smiled and then her tail vanished through the doorframe.

Without Purpose
(Rex encounters Amaya by the graves of her parents & Amaya has a breakdown)

Amaya Vaughan
New RP

Amaya didn't venture out of her duplex often anymore, only doing so when she needed food. But this time... it was for a different reason.

Her large feet awkwardly walked along the sands of the beach until they came to near the end. There she stopped and kneeled down by the edge of the jungle. Three large stones and driftwood were made into a sort of memorial holding no names in front of her.

It had been too long.

"I'm sorry... I haven't come here in awhile. I've just kind of been scared to leave my room." She started, her voice but a whisper.

Rex Vadnais
Rex couldn't stand not having a gym on the island. He was running as much as possible and doing push-ups and sit-ups in his room, but otherwise he craved work-out machines.

Rex embarked for his usual run along the beach, lost in thought. He wore his usual black jeans, belt, ring and necklace. But no shoes, socks or shirt as his clothes were in short supply and he wanted to keep them as clean as possible. He stared out to the endless horizon of the ocean, imagining the mainland and the millions of people living their lives without the slightest clue of the island and it's inhabitants. Would they ever know? Or would they, as islanders, just be forgotten and die out here on the island? Sand kicked up into the air behind his long strides, it was good excercise.

Glancing back to the white-sand beach in front of him, he eyed the jungle's treeline. Though one of the trees' greens was a different shade. Upon jogging nearer he realized it was a person, Amaya? She appeared saddened and serious. Unsure if he should interrupt, he stood back by the tideline silently.

Amaya Vaughan
Unfortunatly, Amaya didn't hear the man jogging behind her. Now that her ears were gone, her ability had decreased slightly. She sat on her legs, her long tail laying slightly curled up behind her and over the rim of her long black skirt.

Tears brimmed her eyes and trailed down her cheeks, green eyes staring at the graves in front of her. A large pink tongue flickered from her mouth and immediantly caught Rex's uinque 'emotional radar'. She turned slowly to look back at him... but made no move to get up or say hi.

Rex Vadnais
Rex stood in the sand, trying to pick up what she was doing. She appeared desolate and depressed...

When she turned, he stared sadly, then uttered, "Do you.. want me to leave?" He knew the feeling of wanting to be alone very well. When Julie died, Rex shut himself away in his apartment for ages. He'd really let himself go back then. Though he didn't move until she answered, this was her time and the last thing he wanted to do was intrude.

Amaya Vaughan
Amaya shook her head no and sniffed, turning back to look at the graves. "No... it's okay." Last time someone had interupted her it had gone well. She had gotten to sob her woes on Greer. Even though she normally hated putting her sorrows on others... sometimes you just needed to cry on someone elses shoulder.

Rex Vadnais
Rex's spirits rose slightly, at least she wanted his company.. or would at least tolerate it. He made his way up the beach to where the girl was sitting, then sat cross-legged next to her. "Are you all right, babe?" He slid a paw across her shoulder and blinked his exotic eyes. He didn't know what was wrong or why she was here, but he figured it had to do with the monument before them. It seemed like a shrine or a grave, but for who? Had someone on the island died before he'd gotten here? ...or was there something deeper here?

Amaya Vaughan
Another sniff and more tears fell from her eyes as the iguana girl stared at the rocks and driftwood. "My..." She started, cutting off until she felt Rex's arm on her shoulders. It gave her comfort, so she continued.

"My parents and my grandmother are burried back in Pennsylvania." Her voice wavered a lot as she spoke freely, sniffing and crying but her eyes didn't move from ahead. "I figured I would... never see them again so I made a grave here." Her mouth twitched, the little lips remaining turning into a deeply depressed look, a sharp intake of breath before she finally burst into uncontrolable sobs.

Her large palms went to her eyes and her body shook. "I-I don't know what to do anymore!" She had tried her hardest to be happy. To look at the bright side... but their wasn't any. Not anymore. She continued to sob uncontroably, her frame bending foreward as her body shook.

Rex Vadnais
The story was captivatingly sad, but all that he could do was gulp quietly. His heart welled with sympathetic pain. He rubbed her shoulder comfortingly and pulled her closer into his side, sniffing slightly.

"Building a grave here is a very sweet thing to do. But know that they're always looking down at you, they're there to protect you and will always love you unconditionally." He tried not to cry, staying strong would hopefully transfer power into Amaya, she couldn't let go.

Losing loved ones is a very hard thing for someone to go through, the memory of Julie shone strongly in his mind. She dies so unexpectedly, he wasn't ready to let go of her just as their life together was about to begin. He'd always used his engagement ring as a sort of memento for the woman, but maybe building her a grave wouldn't be a bad idea. It would be better on a secluded island anyways, away from the growed cemetery back in San Francisco.

Amaya Vaughan
Amaya practically dropped into his side, her face burrying itself onto his still human skin as she sobbed.

"I knooow." She sniffed and shook. "But I-" Her voice skipped as another breath was taken in. "-don't have anything to hold onto anymore!" The girl wasn't screaming or yelling that loudly, but when she was this upset it was hard to control the volume of one's voice. "My parents are gone, my grandmother is gone, and now so is my humanity!" Her tears slid down Rex's side as they continued to pour.

"I t-tried to be happy. I did for seven months... but I can't anymore." Her voice was quieter now. Defeated. "I'm tired of everything."

Rex Vadnais
Oh boy, this 'not crying' thing was prooving to be harder than Rex imagined it would be. He was a man of emotion and his mood often reflected those of another's. His eyes well with wet as he guided her head down to rest in his lap, he stroked her scaley scalp tenderly and whispered, "Shh, shh... don't worry.. don't worry.." She needed support and he wasn't able to give it to her! There was few things Rex could stand less than people in pain. Physical, mental or emotional.

Amaya Vaughan
The lizard girl was coaxed onto his lap gently, her large hands balled into fists at her chest. Occasionally her body would still shake as she cried. Tears continued to travel down her cheeks and her body curled up, tail weaving around her legs and partially around Rex. She said nothing, only the sounds of her crying coming past her scaley mouth.

Rex Vadnais
The snivelling cries from his lap hit a deep seated gushy spot in Rex's heart, he couldn't hold it anymore. He blinked two tears simultaneaously from blue eyes and released a shuddering sigh. Such tender yet distressed love was an extremely potent emotion, the image of Julie stuck in his head.

Y'know, she was really into Broadway. Occasionally she'd come home with new cast recordings of her favorite shows, and being in San Francisco we got to see the shows at pre-Broadway viewings. Often she'd drag me down to the theater to see plays, and she'd get so worked up in anticipation. There was one show, however, that she listened to all the time . Rent, she was in love with that show and seemed to play the recording over and over again. I'd just laugh as usual, that was my little Julie. But then w-... when she died I stopped listening to it. I don't know why, the house seemed so empty without her music playing in the backround. When they remade it into a movie, I saw it by myself (bawling towards the end), then went and bought the new soundtrack for myself. The last song they played all ways stuck with me, I don't know why....

And the words of that song creaked from Rex's shaky lips, quietly at first, but soon strong enough to overpower the sound of crashing waves...

"Like a breath of midnight air.
Like a lighthouse, like a prayer.
Like the flicker and the flare,
the sky reveals.

Like a walk along the shore.
That you've walked a thousand times before.
Like the oceans roar.
Love heals.

There are those who shield their hearts.
Those who quit before they start.
Who frozen up the part of them that feels
Don't freeze your heart

In the dark they've lost their sight.
Like a ship without a star in the night,
but hold on tight.

Love heals.

When you feel like you can't go on
Hold onto love, it'll keep you strong
When you feel like you can't go on
Hold onto love, it'll bring you home

Love heals when pain's too much to bear.
When you reach out your hand,
and only wind is there.
When life's unfair.
When things like us are not to be.
Love heals when you feel so small,
like a grain of sand. Like nothing at all.

When you look out at sea,
thats where love will be.
Thats where you'll find me.
You'll find me.

So if you fear the storm ahead
As you lie awake in bed
And there's no one, no one ,
no one there to stroke your head.
And your mind reels,
your mind your mind reels

If your face is salty wet,
and you're drowning in regret,
just... don't forget

When you feel like you cant go on
love love love is gunna carry you home
when you feel like when you feel like you cant go on
hold onto love and it will lead you home
Love heals..."

Where on earth did that come from? He sat in silence, realizing what he'd just done. Great, this girl was in mourning and he was busy singing showtunes. He shook his head slowly and wiped another tear from his cheek, then one from Amaya's.

Amaya Vaughan
Unaware of Rex's internal struggle, Amaya simply lay where she was and wept. Gradually the tears dried up. She was still sad and depressed and at the moment could think of no reason for her to be here right now.

Then Rex started to sing.

It was a song she didn't know, but she listened to it intently. Love heals? ... What was there to love? Occasionally a tear or two would be able to slip, a gentle wipe from Rex's hand catching a few.

Her green eyes slowly looked up at him, then she pushed herself to a sitting position next to him. "Sorry..." She said, her voice hoarse and quiet. "Thanks though."

The two green orbs that so matched her scales were dull and wet, the bright love for life and all things that Rex probably never really got the chance to see much was gone. Replaced by a worn, defeated look.

When she first came to the island and started changing, her purpose was to cheer people up about what was happening. Convince them it could always be worse... now she couldn't do that. What was her purpose?

Rex Vadnais
"No, heh," he sniffed, "I'm sorry for making you listen to my bad singing. It just sort of... leaked out." Rex leaned forward, knicking Amaya gently on the nose and grinning sincerely. He didn't want her to be sad, though he understood where she was coming from. Obviously, life on the island, being riped from your home, leaving everything you had suddenly, it was tough. One couldn't help but feel helpless in a desperate situation such as thing.

He pulled Amaya into another embrace, then sniffed wiping the last of their tears from their eyes. "I'm all ways going to be here for you..."

Amaya Vaughan
Amaya gave a smile to him, though he could probably tell that it was forced and didn't touch her eyes. She didn't mind being torn from Pennsylvania... what she minded was being torn of her purpose of living. How could you make others happy when you couldn't even smile yourself? She tried to be happy... she really did. It just didn't work like it used to.

Though as Rex pulled her into an embrace she was surprised. Her eyes widdened a little but then she relaxed. Her eyelids dropped halfway and she put her face on his furry chest, arms embracing him back. The last of her tears had been wiped away.

I'm always going to be here for you...

At that moment she seemed to forget everything and snuggled deeper into him, never wanting to let go and face what lay beyond again. If the world had ended right then, she would die content.

Rex Vadnais
Rex hugged her a bit longer, strong arms cradling her tightly. He rocked her back and forth gently then craned his neck to look down at her. "Are you hungry?" He let go of her and came to his feet, "Or do you just want to go to your duplex? I'll walk yeh." His eyebrows rose while he awaited an answer, looking to the makeshift grave quickly, then back to the girl.

Amaya Vaughan
Amaya greatfully stayed in his arms the entire time, taking in his unique scent and comforting embrace. For her it parted all too soon.

She looked up at him, then to the graves. For a few moments she stared at them, saying a prayer in her head for her parents and grandmother. Then she turned back to Rex.

"I'm not really hungry, no... I wouldn't mind being walked back to my room though." She smiled a little and stood up as well.

Rex Vadnais
Rex was slightly happy she didn't want to go eating, he knew he needed a shower and was slightly embarassed by his stench at the moment. Flowery fresh was much better than gnarly BO. "Alrighty," he smiled, pausing in front of the grave once more before starting to walk off into the forest, "let's go then."

Eventually, the two neared duplex 22. At the door, Rex took Amaya in his arms for a last time and pecked her on the head sweetly. "Y'know, I stand by what I said on the beach. If you ever need me, I'm always here. The island isn't very big." He chuckled then stepped back. "Catch yeh later!" he flashed a hand in a wave then headed back to his own duplex for yet another shower. He'd have to scout out a good location for that grave...

Amaya Vaughan
For the most part Amaya walked by him in silence, stopping once they were in front of her door. She returned the hug with gusto and then pulled back to look up at him.

One of the rare, genuine smiles graced her scaley features as she nodded to him.

"Bye Rex..." She said quietly with a wave of her hand. Green eyes watched him vanish around the corner and she stood there in silence for a few moments before turning around and going back into her duplex.

Awen trudged her way back over to Amaya's duplex. She had failed and had the IV to prove it. She was avoiding telling people, semi, kind of, because she didn;'t want to bring people's hopes down... but then she remembered that Amaya was more worried than anything. So the mant thought she would pay the girl a visit.

She knocked on the duplex door and waited.

Like always, Amaya had been simply flopped on her bed basking and listening to her CD player. Her long tail twitched at the knock and her head raised up to look at the door. Only a handful of people would knock on her door like that. Carefully manuvering herself off the bed to keep from tearing any of her sheets or getting her tail tangled up, she removed her headphones and made her way to the door.

It didn't take her as much now that her feet were so big to peek into the little eye-hole. There stood Awen with... something beside her?

The iguana's brow furrowed and she immediantly opened the door. "Awen?" Though after meeting her friend's gaze she looked to both sides to make sure no one was passing by. Then she opened the door all the way. "Is that an IV? What happened?" Her eyes went wide and her tail swayed behind her nervously, her long fingers fidgetting.

"Ah, hehe, yeah it is." She responded to the IV question before smiling a bit. "It's no big deal though really." She scratched the back of her neck a little bit.

"Yeah it is!" Amaya argued, frowning. Her non-existant brow began to furrow. "What happened? Did they do something to you after you tried to escape?" Her tail swayed a little more behind her.

She chuckled a little bit. "Yeah they did something alright. They saved my life, then gave me a new water bed. Well...more like a bed-tank." She put a hand on the IV leaning a little bit on it. "Appearently I'm just fresh water...not salt water. I...almost drowned." She perked up with a smile. "Oh but I'm fine now!"
