Uriel noticed as the stranger tripped, only a few yards away. But he decided not to mention anything, as it probably wasn't his place. He would wait until one of the others noticed her. This would provide another distraction from any suspicion of him.

Instead, while the others mused over their predicament, he found a place not far from where he was already standing, under a tree. However, he was careful to sit against the side that provided no shade, a peculiar habit of his. He plucked several blades of grass and attempted to make whistles out of each, each one providing a failure. I little annoyed, he started messing with his hair, stroking his fingers along two straight strands that hung down just left of his nose. He looked out toward the enormous bridge that lay before him and was amazed that something so huge could ever grow into disuse.

Lyra sighed and sat up, mumbling to herself again. Suddenly, she held her head in what looked like pain, holding her hands tightly against her covered ears. Lyra slowly pulled her hands away to readjust her hat which hadn't moved when she fell. She turned to where the strange man had gone by a tree and saw the blades of grass that he had pulled out. Glaring at him, she slowly rose to her feet, dusted of her dress and walked slowly and carefully to the bridge.

From behind his tree, Uriel responded to the glare with a slight hand gesture he was glad the rest of the group had not seen. He got up and brushed off his pants, and readjusted his jackets. With an inaudible groan, he walked over to the others to find if they had thought of any other ways to cross the bridge.

Rhone proceeds towards the bridge and sees a girl trip and then stand back up.
"Hey, I think that girl needs-"
Suddenly a pink blur flies by him.
"...help."

The pink Blur was Zelos, who was now beside the girl.
"Are you alright, miss? I'm sorry I didn't help sooner! The great Zelos Wilder, at your service!"

((Doing a little backtracking from here, starting from where Rhone answered Colette. Just saying in case I might be confusing anyone. User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. ))

Colette stopped in her tracks, her eyes widening in an expression of slight fear, after what Rhone had said. She understood that there were bound to be disagreements in the group...but it distressed her to picture things escalating to the point where someone would annihilate somebody else. Wait a minute...but who's Chiaro? she thought, picking up her step to catch up with the rest of the group, which had stopped shortly before the bridge.

After Sheena had posed her question and Rhone and Zelos made suggestions, she exclaimed, "Ooh, ooh! I could carry the puppies!" ^.^

Sheena chuckled a bit, then went on to remind, "I could have someone sit behind me on my Rheaird."

"I could carry someone myself, if need be," Kratos offered, simply being courteous.

It was then that the noises Uriel was making caused the others to notice the person that had tripped. Sheena rolled her eyes as Zelos took off to "aid" her, and followed behind shortly. Once she caught up, she pulled Zelos back by the ear. "Ugh, don't mind him. You seem to be preparing to cross the water yourself; do you need any help?"

Colette, Kratos, and Azriel remained at a short distance and watched on, standing close together.

Throughout all this, little Eloysio had taken a break from his examination of the pact rings to peek out of Azriel's bag, keeping an eye on Uriel and this rather peculiar and random behavior he was displaying at the moment. He had to admit, his actions were baffling him. Why did he go off like that all of a sudden? A display of impatience, perhaps?

Lyra was shocked by Zelos' display of chivalry and blushed lightly. Then she watched Sheena drag him off. "I-I'm fine... I usually cross the water myself by boat so I'll be fine." Lyra said, trying to move but something in her told her that she should stay with them, that she could help them. She was blushing still but now it was from talking. she usually never talked to people but she felt kind of comfortable talking to Sheena.

"I see I came back over here with good timing. We can just take her boat," Uriel said more so than suggested. He asked, "It's going to fit us all right?" Uriel was silently praying to Martel that the clumsy woman before him wouldn't be the one driving. That is not to suggest Uriel was religious, however, he did on occasion ask of Martel little favors and would usually thank the goddess when something positive occurred. After all, that was the way he'd been since he first left home and he'd never really run into trouble on his journeys. So in his mind, why would he stop? If believing in Martel helps, then that's great, he would think, If it doesn't, then whatever. No harm done.

Lyra looked in Uriel's direction when he spoke up but looked away abruptly when she saw that it was the same man that had been pulling out grass earlier. "My boat is big enough for everyone here and more. It's just over there.... By the dock." She pointed to the dock behind her. "Everyone is free to ride on my boat, even you, Mr. I'm-pulling-out-grass-and-giving-me-a-terrible-headache." She said snarkily, pointing at Uriel. "I'm Lyra, Sybak's resident ferry girl is at your service." Lyra said to everyone, bowing low for a few seconds before rising again.

A boat... ... ...ugh, thought Oro. He and boats never really got along.

Schwarz knew it too, but he always enjoyed to watch his brother's stubbornness lead him to suffer a little.

"Raine Sage, Pleasure to meet you." she noticed a little tug on her leg, "this little guy is Schwarz, and the gold one is Oro."

"And I'm Uriel Ledon. But please, feel free to just call me Mr. I'm-pulling-out-grass-and-giving-me-a-terrible-headache," Uriel replied in a similar tone to her own. What kind of joke was Lyra? A ferryman? When did she take on this role? It certainly wasn't one that was needed very often, if ever. He couldn't imagine why she would even bother with the boat. Even if it was merely a passing comment, it didn't occur to him anyone would have reason to cross the waters often enough that purchasing a boat would return in benefits any amount of the cost. Why would she even need one? It hardly mattered; after all, it was a stroke of luck he could cross this natural border without having to crawl along the coast until finding a bridge of land, as was his usual method. But still, he couldn't help asking, "What do you need the boat for anyway? By yourself as you are, and hardly heftily built, I doubt you're a fisherman-- er, fisherwoman."

Lyra smiled at Raine and waved at Schwarz and Oro. "The pleasure is all mine. Don't worry about fees. There is no charge at all considering I couldn't make a living off of ferrying anyway." She turned to Uriel. "I do apologize for my rudeness Mr. Ledon but pulling out grass or even the physical harm of nature... Screams into my ears. As to answer your question, Mr. Ledon, no, I'm not a fisherwoman of any sort." Lyra sighed, looking down at her feet. Her long blue hair drifted in the light breeze. "My mother at the moment is very sick and gets sick often. Living in Sybak, we don't have any doctors let alone medicine so at a young age I built my boat and the docks to travel to Meltokio and purchase medicine for my mother. It usually does the trick after a few days." She frowned at what she had said but felt proud that she had opened up to people that were indeed complete strangers to her. Looking back up at the group around her she smiled again. "If you wish it, you can stay with us in Sybak. I don't think mother would mind." Lyra questioned to the group.

"It's just some stupid grass. It can't feel anything, and if it could it doesn't matter. You're stepping on it now; it's used to being stepped on. If it can't rebel then who cares? Uriel paused a moment, reviewing his and Lyra's words in his mind.

He stated, "Wait if your mother needs medicine from Meltokio, how come you haven't moved directly into the city? And I would think that the research institutes of Sybak would have some sort of pharmaceutical center. So how come---" Uriel's eyes narrowed and he stared at her quizzically. It was fairly faint, as if it had hardly been tapped into, but he could feel magic blood in her, similar to the agitation he felt in Meltokio. However, it clearly did not fill her veins entirely. This woman was undoubtedly a half-elf. Knowing much about Sybak's treatment of half-elves, he let up on the conversation and turned his gaze back onto the boat.

There were certainly dozens of possible reasons for her unusual position, several of which could have been true at the same time. A secretly half-elven student; a prisoner in the basements who sneaks out; someone who spent all their money to go to Sybak, for the schooling or otherwise, and cannot afford to leave. Perhaps she doesn't have enough money for the rich or even average neighborhoods of Meltokio and knows better than to face the slums. Whatever the case, he couldn't help but aid her in trying to cover her secret. But his previous line could have soiled that chance.

How would these people react to a half-elf? He heard rumors the Chosens' group befriended people of all races, but never took any of them seriously. What human would want to associate themselves with someone so low-ranking on the social scale? He both wanted to find out and wanted not to at the same time. He'd watch to see if Lyra could formulate some reasonable explanation.

Lyra payed no mind to Uriel's comments about the grass. She listened to his words and as he began drawing to her secret, her eyes widened slightly. How would he know? No, he couldn't know... It's crazy and... well, no he just can't know what I am. Ok, now calm down. Think Lyra. As she visibly showed signs of nervousness, Lyra closed her mouth and was silent. Thinking of an excuse but merely judging on weather it was a good idea to go to Meltokio today or to just wait.

No even if I had waited a day they would've found me eventually. She thought again.
"T-to answer your question, Mr. Ledon, my mother refuses to travel anywhere because Sybak is her home town and she... Wishes to remain there as a teacher...." Lyra managed with great difficulty considering she was breaking out in a cold sweat.

Calm down. They must not know so just... Think up your next excuse. Carefully... Almost thinking out loud as she tried to breathe calmly.
"Sybak's researchers are still looking for a permanent cure for the illness. Another one of the reasons my mother doesn't want to leave. She feels that if she can some how help the scientists find a cure, then maybe other people won't get it. So far, it's not contagious or I'd be at home in Sybak and not taking you guys across, right?" Lyra chuckled and exhaled the breath she had been holding since Uriel had cut off his possible conclusion. Lyra readjusted her hat again even though it hadn't moved.

((So sorry for not posting. 1) I was kinda hitting a mental block, 2) I was kinda waiting for Vance to post, saw some good opportunities for Zelos to butt in and all, and 3) when I finally decide to do something, I'm dragged out of the house for most of the day. =_=;;

Just...hold your horses... Will have my responses edited in here soon. Just reviewing the last few posts. sweatdrop

Oh, and Lee...character note about Raine. She should've started getting nervous over the suggestion of traveling by boat. wink

EDIT: Aaaaargh, so sorry to leave you hanging again, but I have to go out yet again today. This post will be edited after a handful of hours. sweatdrop ))

((Also, in case you didn't know/remember, Uriel is a pure blood elf. Elves can usually sense elven blood in others. But your post is still awesome so don't edit it at all. Uriel specifically is more sensitive to mana consumption than others, which isn't saying very much at all since all half-elves and elves have the same ability, even if not quite so refined. Not that there's any need for it to be refined. Why am I ranting? Ok then, there it is.

EDIT: I'll just wait for Azriel's post.))
