Well, Ive asked this question in other forums but Id like to get your imput as well: I think it would be in my best interest to learn flute especially for jazz band, and I don't know the first thing about buying a flute. What am I to look for? I'm pretty sure I'll go to a pawn shop to get it.
Oh well, any suggestions would be great!

Get a friend to help you find a nice one. Basically, if it's a new name brand you shouln't have to worry much. IF it's an off brand, or used, then make sure to have someone check it out--
--Dr. K.
Also don't bother with open holes, a B foot, or anything made of solid silver yet. You don't need those. It's also needless to say, DON'T GET SWINDLED INTO BUYING SOMETHING JUST BECAUSE IT HAS FRENCH TIPS. Those do nothing for your sound, they just look nice.

One more question: Ive seen some in line and offset G thingamabobs. Does that mean anything?

Get it. It's more comfortable and reportedly better for your hand. Plus, the inline G does nothing for your sound. Offset is generally just a better pick.
See, there are some people who are just more comfortable on inline, generally the really high end players who have been playing for so long, they don't want to have to make any adjustments now. Some even say it makes faster playing easier, but that's probably just a personal difference.
Offset G is generally never any more expensive. It's a good thing that you remembered about it, Dr. K.

Sup, flautists. XD
I should practice more. I quit band once I got to college (don't have time) and I probably really really suck now. crying The only things I can play now are the Chocobo Theme, some stand music, and the district tryout music from way back when. sweatdrop

Today my friend let me borrow her old open-hole flute.
._.;;
Needless to say, it's a big adjustment. But already I can get most notes out <3 It sounds so much better. One big problem though...it's inline G. gonk
why does she have an old open-hole? Well, she upgraded to a five thousand dollar flute :3 it's like the stradovarius of flutes, it's so easy to play *heaven*

Oooh, I'm not fond of the offset. >< It hurts my pinky finger and, on the crap school I've got at the moment, is harder to play. But to each their own, I guess.
