Trial advocacy trial is done. I'll just go crash now, thanks.
Oh, and I got all my items back. Thanks mods/Zelo!
Also, did I ever tell people here about my summer internship for this summer?
Congratz! And no, I don't think you did tell us about your summer internship.
Well, this summer I'll be working in the Yolo County District Attorney's office. Our school had on-campus interviews for various places, including the Yolo DA's offices. I'd tried going to other DAs for a few weeks before the interviews, but most of them had filled up all their internships already. So I applied for one of the interview spots and got it. This felt good, because last year when I tried for on-campus interviews, I didn't actually get a single interview.
So I go to the interview and sit down with the two interviewers and start answering their questions. And I'm...a little less prepared than I probably should have been, but it's my first law interview, so I didn't know what to really expect. I thought I'd just be able to show I was smart and wanted to work in the DA's office and all that. And they ask a first question which I had prepared for, thankfully. They asked who the DA was, and I get the feeling if I hadn't known that, it would have been "Okay. Thank you. Next!" or the slightly more polite version of that. Their next question, though, throws me off. In retrospect, I should have found a reason I wanted to be a DA in Yolo County as opposed to anywhere else. I start talking about wanting to work for a District attorney, and just end up rambling a little. That throws me off, so I'm pretty nervous through the rest of the interview and by the end, think I didn't do too well. They were having a second round of interviews later, and so didn't really give any sort of decision then
I sent a thank-you letter afterwords, which was a somewhat longer one about how I wanted to work in the DA office. And, to my surprise, soon after I got an e-mail asking me back for the second round of interviews. After some scheduling errors on my part, I go down to perform an opening statement for the fact situation they sent to me. I misunderstood the rules and thought we had to use a diagram that was in it (but that was just for the class the hypo was taken from). So I print out my own version of a diagram to use and bring that with to the interview.
The interview was in the Woodland courthouse, which it took me a little time to find. Google Maps, 2nd St. doesn't connect like you think it does. I still get there with plenty of time, since I was worried about just that. The interview itself was conducted by six attorneys (one of whom was at the first interview too) and I and the two other people there that day gave our openings. I thought I did alright on both writing and delivering, and got some good feedback. After that, the attorneys break into pairs to talk to the three of us and answer questions. I was talking to the guy who did the first interview and another person. He starts talking and mentions that they noticed I was really nervous at the first interview and weren't going to call me back if my thank you letter hadn't persuaded them to give me another try. I was all of a sudden very glad I'd followed the advice to send the letter. They talk a bit more about my opening and some of my credentials, particularly how I am an Eagle Scout and how that's a pretty big mark in my favor.
Only a few days after that, I got the offer while I was in the middle of class, and that made that session of Constitutional Law feel a lot better.
Anyways, long story short, I've got the internship I really wanted, and I'm looking forward to it a lot.
