scjsport KitoYasha [c h o k e] my school's senior band has 23 flute players... rofl Twenty-three? Holy crap, and I thought we were bad. We're going to have twenty next year, because we've got so many [awful] freshmen coming up. =/ our flute section has 40 flutes largest band in AZ Is at least balanced with the rest of the band? Ours isn't. I have learned this year that there is in fact such a thing as too much flute.
And to answer the question that was asked, I can play them on three octaves. =) It's not very hard, but my flute friends hate me for it all the same.

Rhyala Should I switch to flute next year? : O I would automatically say "yes" out of love for the instrument, but that is a bias which you probably shouldn't listen to. What do you play currently?

What do you play currently? I play percussion right now... It's a big switch I guess. I really really douby the BD would let me, and my mom absolutely hates the idea. She says if I switch now I'll never get good at anything. =/ I dunno though.. I'm going to ask him after I go in for my science exam tomorrow if I can borrow a flute for the summer. I borrowed someone's once, for a night, and fell in love. sweatdrop I'd like to try it out... but everyone seems so negative about it. Besides, my music class will have no flutes next year.. they're all not taking it again. But even if I don't switch all the percussionists are leaving too so I'd be alone again. Huh.. I feel it's my duty to provide a section. You can't have a band class without flutes, or percussion. ;__; [/ramble]

It is good that you feel it is your duty to take up the instrument, but if you're a percussionist and there aren't any flutes, then it is more the responsibility of the musicians who aren't coming back to play. They made the commitment, didn't they? Either way, I respect your dedication to the band. You get brownie points x300!
Aren't there other percussionists coming up next year? In my school, at least, there have always been an excess of them. You should probably stick with it if there aren't, but it isn't as though you can play the entire percussion section by yourself. However, if you do want to try the flute, then do like you said and borrow one for the summer to help see which you really want to pursue. If you do decide to stick with flute, then it's not as though you have to give up percussion entirely, anyway. Your school probably offers other bands, right? As for people being negative: if you enjoy it, then what's the problem? If you truly love an instrument, mean things people say don't matter. =) And besides, if you're the only flute, you wouldn't have to worry about competing for first chair! No worries.
I don't know, I am probably not being much help here and am rambling because it is morning and my brain is thbbbbt. But you have all summer to decide, and if you have any questions or need any help, I will gladly answer them!
Good luck!

Good luck! Awh, thank you so much. heart I went in after my science exam today and asked to borrow a flute... I said I didn't want to switch out of percussion, and just borrow the flute for the summer to see if I enjoy it or not.. Well the BD got really upset and told me that they don't sign out multiple instruments? I don't know... I mean it's not like percussion is an instrument, I don't get what he means because I don't have any other school instruments... it's a stupid rule... Anyway now I think I'm stuck with flute so I have a summer to figure out how to do the grade 9 level book by myself. And then I'm going to be thrown into senior band (I'll be in grade 11, I'm behind with music classes...) and I won't be able to do anything. >.< It's so stupid... And my mom is beyond pissed at me. I made up a lie and said the teacher said it was okay that I could just borrow it for the summer but that isn't true... I've officially switched over now I guess... He gave me lik 30 seconds to decide. This is so stupid, I'm like really upset over this and I really shouldn't be... I don't get why everyone has to be so strict. Like, if at the end of the summer I decide I don't like it it's just going to be too bad... Even though it's perfectly easy to just hand it back in and continue with percussion...

What do I do? I know exactly, EXACTLY how you feel. holyshit, twins. I'd say promise her that you will keep going with your flute, but just on the side do a few other things... Promise her that if your music mark drops, you'll stop playing the other things? That might get her to agree... But I know completely how you feel. sweatdrop

Am I the only one with parents who are happy that I want to learn other instruments? =/ My BD doesn't allow it either. Perhaps he is just paranoid that you're going to quit alltogether and doesn't want his only percussionist to go from something she's good at to something she's just learning. And if you're the only flute, it definitely will be a challenge.
It really bites that he just forced you into it. It's what you wanted, though, right? I don't really understand what he's doing. He got angry, but he's making you do it? Wtf. Bipolar, much? The only thing I can think of right now is to perhaps approach your BD and your mom tomorrow after they've cooled down a bit and explain it a little more. Also, it's testy considering the situation, but you might want to look into a private teacher to help you get the hang of things. You're going to have to play a fast game of catch-up, but I am sure you can do it. =) Practice makes perfect!
I am sorry all of this crap is happening to you just because you want to expand your horizons and go with something you love. Welcome to America. ><

Thanks, I'll give it a try. But i guess the main reason she wont let me take another instrument is because im already playing flute and french horn, and guitar. But i still think i have room for more, 'cause im even better at french horn than the ones that have been playing for 2 years. (ive been playing for 2 months) and guitar, im pretty good at, and im bored of french horn, so i want different instruments.

I am sorry all of this crap is happening to you just because you want to expand your horizons and go with something you love. Welcome to America. >< I wish my mom wanted me to learn other instruments, but she wants me to be the next Neil Peart, or something. xD I guess that's somewhat true. sweatdrop I had a 98 in the class, before the written exam (now it's like 94 or something, meh) with percussion... And I've been taking private lessons since October for drumkit, so... I guess I am somewhat good, maybe I insulted him or something? I absolutely love my mark, it'll bring up my low as ******** math one, but maybe he took it as an insult or something... I did want to do flute, but I wanted to take it home for the summer to leisurely practice... now I'm pretty much forced to. x.x If I like it or not, I'm going to be stuck. Too late to talk to the BD... school's over. He's home. xd Though.. I'm sure I can talk to him in September... possibly. He scares me though. o_o I'd looove to take private lessons for it too, but.. 1) My mom would be angry because she wants me to focus on percussion; 2) I don't even think anyone offers any kind of those lessons here... just guitar, bass, drums and piano is all that I can find in the city. sad anddd 3) Then my mom would find out the truth, that my teacher pretty much forced me into doing flute now, she still think's it's okay and I'm handing it back in in September and everything is dandy. o.o I'll tell her the truth in like.. a month or something. xd Holy crap am I ever writing long posts. Seriously. I never write up anything this long. D: And ******** I NEED private lessons bad though... I can't do everything out of this stupid book, I don't know how to play the notes, like if they sound right... I don't get how people learn to play instruments out of books @_@ It's impossible.

This is a very disturbing clip I just found. Think of what Ian Anderson would sound like, if he did hip hop. http://www.timbarsky.com/media/mp3s/sophis.mp3(No, there's nothing special going on. It's just some guy, his flute, and a mic.)
