i tap my foot all the time!(some people say 'What would you expect from a percussionist,I disagree!)I see no problem with it and neither does our band director!

Simply tell your band director that it helps you out. Tapping your foot doesn't show any sign of weekness or inmaturity, infect it shows you are mature. My band director isn't particulary picky about whether you tap or not. Infact what we learn new rythms he makes everyone tap their foot. Also, marching band... You march in place to keep tempo when you review the music, and even while preforming your moving your feet to the tempo. So still, dont listen to your band director, do what works for you.

Gane: I do that when I have like, 20 measure rests. Not during the song though. It's too hard to do both. n_n;;

It's not a bad thing.

Tap with your toes. Or, if you're resting, tap with your fingers on your rested instrument, and count measures that way. I do that ;D

i think it is okay if oyu tap your toes as long as it helps..

I don't really think it's bad if you tap it. It actually gives you a steady beat. You can try to listen to the drums or the people around you for a feel, and it's important to be able to see your conductor over or around your stand, comfortably.

this reminds me of the time when we asked our band director something about tapping your foot and he said not to cause it makes noise on the stage if you do

later in time....

are other band director taught class this time and someone mentioned something about foot tapping and he said we should, no one mentioned what the other band director said so oh well

River Angel Odin
Okay, this has been bothering me for three years...since 6th grade when I joined the middle school band. I'm not saying I downright hate my band director or anything, but I can't possibly keep tempo without having to tap my foot. And he's told me so many times to stop (but I still havn't) and he says that tapping your foot is for babies, which was quite insulting to me, actually. My dad's a big music teacher (He was Rhode Island Teacher of the Year) and he taps his foot, which basically means that Mr. Fortier was calling him a baby. The funny thing is, he looks up to my dad yet he's calling him a baby. sweatdrop

Anyway, do you think tapping your foot is at all bad?

What the ********?!? scream It's good to do that ...your BD is stupid (no offence) I do that...especially in jazz band!!!...its anoyiong to do...but it ges the job done...my pit taps ther feet to keep in time with me!!! i don't like your bd..im sorry...but i don't!

i think tapping your foot can help. you just have to remember that the director gives the tempo, and to look at him enough so that you don't follow your foot's tempo and not the directors.

For me, sometimes it is, but like when we're in 12/8 time, the quarter note tripplets screwme up if I got to tap my foot. It's just my opinion. 4laugh

Dude, tapping your foot is something you SHOULD do.
We used to get yelled at for not tapping- I mean, if you don't tap your foot, you ahve to practically stare at the director to know the tempo (or follow the tubas, but the ones in our win ensemble can't keep a steady beat, so taht won't help)- and if you're staring at the director, you aren't seeing the music.
And this is okay for marching band when you need to memorize it. But when it comes down to playing in a concert/symphonic setting, you can't memorize five pages of music (and depending on what instrument you play, it is very strenuous music)- that being one song. It just doesn't work for musicians our age. This is not to say don't look at the director just because you're tapping your foot, it just means that you don't have to stare continuously and you can give attention to the music.
Besides, when you tap your foot, you FEEL the tempo. It helps SO much, it makes subdividing so much easier.

Personally, I tap my foot most of the time. There are points in some pieces where I don't because I know it messes me up, but those are few and far between.

I tap my foot all the time.
however, when I watch Mr. Kea, and he's timing is off, it screws me up and I get lost.
then I get yelled at for missing my que.
I can't argue with him, though, because he'll only give me the round-about...
yeah....so I'm learning to tap my foot and look at him but not actually pay attention to him while we play.

Gosh. I have serious tempo problems. Notes that are supposed to be the same would have weirdly skewed lengths if I didn't tap my foot.

Sigh. Bad tempo+marching band=utter disaster D=
