Mayu stifled a giggle -- this was just too funny!

"I am going to see my grandmother and carry her a cake and a little pot of butter from my mother," she replied, chipperly. She held up the box and purse for Manior to see as she spoke.

Manior had begun to giggle, finding Demare's voice rather funny.

"Does she live far off?" he asked, still trying to use the deep voice.

"Oh, I say, it is beyond that mill you see there, at the first house in the village." Mayu replied, and pointed off vaguely in a random direction.

"Well," Demare started, looking in the direction Mayu had pointed in, "I'll go and see her too. I'll go this way and go you that, and we shall see who will be there first."

The halfling looked back down at the book again to see what was written.

"The wolf ran as fast as he could, taking the shortest path, and the little girl took a roundabout way, entertaining herself by gathering nuts, running after butterflies, and gathering bouquets of little flowers. It was not long before the wolf arrived at the old woman's house."

Demare thought for a moment, then walked out into the hallway, closing the door behind him. After a moment, he knocked on the door twice.

Mayu pretended to chase butterflies and gather flowers as Demare ran out into the hallway, twirling about like a clumsy ballerina. She dropped the blanket and her props as the boy knocked on the door, and got upon his bed.

"Who's there?" she asked, attempting to take on the voice of an old woman.

Manior giggled wildly, clapping his hands at the performance so far. It was as if he were actually watching everything happen!

Demare pitched his voice high, trying his best to mimic Mayu's voice, but not doing very well.

"Your grandchild, Little Red Riding Hood," he squeaked, "who has brought you a cake and a little pot of butter sent you by mother."

Mayu pretended to cough and cried out, "Pull the bobbin and the latch will go up."

She smiled as she heard Manior laugh, her plan to get the child to stop crying had worked.

Demare let the door swing open once more, dashing into the room.

"Rawr!" he cried, running up along the side of the bed and very carefully draping himself over the tree girl. He pretended to eat her, picking her up and setting her down on the other side of the room, then ran back to his bed. "Yumyumyumyumyum!"

The halfling rubbed his stomach as if he were full, then took one of his pillows out from its case and placed the pillow cover just over his hair. He began to recite the next part of the story the best he could from memory.

"The wolf fell upon the good woman and ate her up in a moment, for it been more than three days since he had eaten. Shutting the door and getting into the grandmother's bed, he was expecting Little Red Riding Hood, who came some time afterwards and knocked at the door."

Mayu picked up the blanket from the spot where it had been discarded before, and also the props she had dropped upon the ground. She then strode out into the hallway, and tapped on the door twice lightly.

Demare coughed a little bit, clearing his throat and once more attempting a higher pitched voice, this time trying for an old woman.

"Who's there?" he croaked.

Mayu opened the door slightly so she could be heard from the hallway, and recited, "Little Red Riding Hood, hearing the big voice of the wolf, was first afraid; but believing her grandmother had a cold and was hoarse, answered.."

She put on a timid voice for this part. "It is your grandchild Little Red Riding Hood, who has brought you a cake and a little pot of butter mother sends you."

Demare tried his best to make his voice sound weak.

"Pull the bobbin, and the latch will go up."

"Nuh! Dun opin ta dohr, Wed!" Manior cried, trying to be a hero in the audience.

Mayu entered the room slowly, to create an element of suspense. Or, at least, that's how she imagined it to be -- in actuality, she just looked to be a very slow walker. She turned to the bed, waiting for Demare to say his line.

Demare stared at her for a moment, wondering why she didn't say anything. ...Oh, right. His line.

"The wolf, seeing her come in, said to her, hiding himself under the bedclothes..." he narrated while pulling the sheets over himself a little more, "Put the cake and the little pot of butter upon the stool, and come get into bed with me."

The halfling blinked, then blushed slightly, realizing how bad that must have really sounded.

Mayu placed the box and purse on a nearby chair, and walked over to the bed. She dropped the blanket on the floor and hissed for the boy to scootch over.

When he had made substantial room for her to lie down, she shuffled into the bed, and said, "Grandmother, what big arms you have!"
