I grimaced when I heard the squishy squelching. And I nearly hit the breaks when Larissa gasped that I had run several blobs over.
"Stupid things ran out in-front of the car." I said, grumpily. I eased up on the gas, driving slower because of the slime now on the tires. "Just have to make this drive more complicated."
I drove the way I did when the roads were icy. But soon enough we reached the haunted house and I parked in a space near the place. I got out and looked at the colorful goop that covered my tires. It also had gotten on the hood of my car too.
"I'll have to go to a car wash later." I said as I put my hands on my hips. "Get all that goop off."

"I guess they're not that bright" Larissa said. "Even birds know to get out of the way when a car's coming towards them. I didn't notice a brain or anything inside them actually. They're just blobs of coloured jelly with smiley faces. I'm guessing they're magically animated or something"
On her shoulder Poff sniffed "Purrobably. Familiars are smarter than those things"
Larissa noticed Garnet was driving slower and felt a little worried about the car sliding off the road but they made it to where they were going and soon parked. She got out of the car and noticed the slime all over it. "Oh my gosh, what a mess. Poor blobs!"
Poff wrinkled her nose at the slime "Ew, gross. I hope none of that gets on my fur"
The witch looked around to see where they were and noticed a group of students in Halloween costumes gathering around a man in a staff uniform with a name tag on his jacket. Wondering what was going on, she started to head over, hoping Garnet was following "Why is everyone out here? And where is everyone? This looks like a small group"
The tour guide smiled and waved them over "Welcome, welcome. This is Oslow House. I'll be your tour guide this evening. The other tour guides have already gone ahead with their groups, so we'll just wait a few more minutes to let them get ahead of us while we wait for more people to show up" he gestured to the large empty house behind them. "This house was one of the first built in this town back in the settler's days. The family here was very rich but it holds dark secrets and tragedies. You can take photos and video in the tour, but I warn you sometimes you get more than meets the eye. We've had people catch shadow figures, orbs, and even some EVPs and class A apparitions" he said and a chill raced down Larissa's spine.
She glanced at Garnet "Wow the story they made up this year sure is scary. Guess it's all part of the fun" she smiled nervously. She fished her phone out of her pocket "We're supposed to take photos and videos, huh? I'll just use my phone. Way to make it more interactive"
Poff's fur was beginning to stand on end. She huddled down on Larissa's shoulder "I have a weird feeling about this place" she complained.

"Hey, us birds are very smart, thank you." Gossamer said, puffing out his feathers. He then started to preen his wings. He then paused and tilted his head. "Except chickens. They're dumb enough to drown when it's raining."
I just smirked and rolled my eyes as Sapphire chittered, amused.
After taking a good look at the tires, I followed Larissa over to the tour guide as I studied the building. The building was old, I noted as I looked on as the tour guide spoke; but it didn't seem to be in too bad a state of dis-repair. Slightly shabby, but no broken or cracked windows and very little in the way of peeling paint.
It was then Larissa made a comment about making up the story. I sucked in a breath as Gossamer and Sapphire did the same. There was in the scent in the air... not bitter and strong like hellfire, more like the scent of ash and lily. Gossamer's feather's puffed as Sapphire dropped from my hat and flew to my shoulder, nuzzling up to my neck. She hasn't done that since she was a wee baby bat.
I leaned over to Larissa. "I doubt this is made up...."

She laughed softly at Gossamer's comments. "Oh yeah, chickens can be pretty silly"
"They taste good, though" Snow Poff chimed in, licking her lips. "I could go for some chicken later on"
Larissa stroked her "There'll be nibbles and drinks at the dance. We can look for chicken then, okay?"
The tour guide seemed satisfied after a few more people showed up and started to lead them into the house, through the well kept garden.
"Now you may notice that although old, this house is kept in good condition. That's because the owners are the descendants of the original family. Everything is kept clean and tidy, and they hire people skilled in olden day techniques and knowledge to do any repairs or cleaning. While old, it is still very much a beautiful house" he said, leading them into the entrance way and then to the right, down a corridor which had different rooms leading off it. Each room was set up as though the owners had never left; the place was fully furnished and stocked. The floor was made of ornate materials in intricate designs, marble and types of stones that cost a fortune. The walls were wood panels carved and decorated and the ceiling was decorated too. The only thing lighting the house were candles and oil lamps.
Larissa stayed close to the group, and close to Garnet as they walked around, her heels clipping on the hard smooth floors, but muffled by rugs and carpets laid over parts of them. She listened to the guide tell the stories of the old place. The dim lighting and dancing flames made the place seem more eerie, though she felt kind of safe in the group.
"The original story goes, that the Oslows were the first magical family to settle in this town, many years ago. The townspeople at the time, were superstitious and fearful of things they didn't understand. But there were some who used to visit the Oslows for spells, healing, and magical advice. However, the people who visited soon began to have strange and mysterious things happen to them, and then, deaths. The Oslows were blamed for the murders, of course. Eventually there was a riot, and the townspeople killed Sir Oslow's wife, who had just given birth to twin boys. Their father eventually remarried, although it was rumoured their stepmother was a cruel woman who wanted the family's wealth and power for herself. She had a child with Sir Oslow..."
He kept talking as they walked around, telling them all of the history which included suicides, death by sicknesses, murders and magical accidents, explaining what the rooms and walls were made of, what the family coat of arms meant, what the lives of the people here were like. How they had maids and servants. He also talked about ghostly activity that had been seen and which dead family members or servants the ghosts were supposed to be causing it.
Larissa noticed some of the rooms were roped off, with do not enter signs. She saw an old alchemy lab. She gasped in fright when a black shadow figure zoomed across the room and suddenly, she clung to Garnet. She was shivering, and realised the air was much colder than it was before.
"Oh my god! Garnet I just saw something!" she whispered, her voice high pitched with fear and panic, and a little bit of excitement. "This is an actual haunted house! Oh my god...oh my god, I shouldn't have come here!" But the only way out was to walk her way back on her own, and the entrance they came through was quite far away. Or else, stick with the group and the guide until the end of the tour. They were walking over creaking old polished floorboards now, and she winced at every step. Poff was hunkered low on her shoulders, her claws digging into her partner. She didn't seem to like this much either.

The house certainly was spooky. Once we finally ventured in, I was soon to realize that the smell of lily and ash grew stronger-- and indeed there were ghosts here. Fun. I thought as I glanced back the way we came, watching the others jump to shadows and seeing ghostly images appear.
I listened to the tour guide drone on; here was a room where someone had not only been killed but buchered; another where they had hung themselves... wow, this house has quite the gristly history, doesn't it?
Soon enough a shadow zipped across the room, and Larissa was clinging to my arm, afraid. I glanced about, before folding one of my wings around her and Poff, while my two familiars huddled againt my neck.
"Don't worry." I said, casting a holy charm; my hand glowing faintly with light. "I'll protect you."

"Ohh, thank you Garnet!" Larissa whispered, squealing softly as she clung tightly. She relaxed when Garnet's wing went around her and sighed softly at her comforting words. She was shaking, both from cold and fear, and worry about her familiar. Poff was scared too, picking up on her partner's emotions as well as having a healthy dislike of ghosty things.
Larissa noticed the strange smell too. She sniffed the air, but wasn't able to decipher what exactly it was. "What is that? It smells odd" she whispered.
Poff had noticed it as well and she spoke through their link. 'It's lily...and ash. That smell. But I don't understand why. Is this what ghosts smell like?'
"I don't know. I didn't know they had a smell" she whispered back to her familiar, making it seem like she was having a one sided conversation with herself. Some people gave her looks. The ones with Familiars instantly understood though.
The more they traveled through the house, the spookier it seemed. All the years and years of history and sad, tragic events weighing heavily within the walls, the floors, the entire interior. Their breath came in huffs of white smoke in the chilled air. Larissa heard distant voices and footsteps coming from other parts of the house. Some other people noticed and commented on it.
The tour guide chuckled "Well, it could be the resident ghosts. But it's most likely what we're hearing is the other tour groups ahead of us. Don't worry foks. We're perfectly safe" The sound of a little child giggling could be heard from one of the rooms. Larissa turned her head to look and froze in horror. She then grabbed her phone and took pictures. "I got it I got it!" she whispered excitedly. "oh my god" She had just taken pictures of two ghost children playing on the bed. {Poff yowled and her fur stood on end "Let's get meowout of here!"

I kept Larissa close as she and her familiar murmured to eachother; and the tour guide reassured us that we were safe. I glanced back and forth, watching the hallway and everything warily as my tail swished back and forth with my gait.
It was then Larissa spun around and snapped some pictures with her phone. frowned, realizing what she had taken pictures of. Poff was very vocal in her desire to leave; meanwhile Sapphire and Gossamer were nuzzled up near my neck, seeming almost bored of the events.
"We're almost done with the tour." I said. "Are you sure you want to run out right now?" Sapphire chittered, sleepily, wanting things to quiet down as she folded her ears behind her head. "Always unflappable, those two."

Larissa shook her head "I want to run, but not by myself through this old creepy house! I'll just stick with you until the end. But I hope it's over soon. There's real ghosts in here!" she waved her phone for emphasis before looking around nervously. "Ow Poff, you're digging your claws in" she gently tried to pry the claws out of her shoulder and the cat relaxed a little but stayed pressed close to her partner, wrapped around her shoulders like a scarf. "I can't help it. There's real ghosts in here!" she meowed.
The tour guide led them throughout the rest of the house, pausing in rooms to tell their history and events, and explain which ghosts were commonly sighted there.
The tour was just ending, with people filing out the back of the house and through their back garden, along a winding path and to the exit gates. Larissa had nearly made it through the whole tour and was stepping out of the back door when she felt a hand on her arm and someone whispered "Boo!" right in her ear. She screamed and ran off into the garden, unaware that the abandoned yet well tended grounds haboured those cute little blob monsters they'd seen on the way here. Poff clung on tightly to her partner. "Where are we going? This isn't the way out?!"

We had made it almost all the way out of the house while following the tour guide. As we got closer to getting out I felt comfortable enough folding my wings back and just holding my arm around Larissa-- at least until someone abruptly spooked her and she went screaming off in some random direction.
Her shrill and abrupt scream hurt my ears and Sapphires. The bat folded her ears back and winced, at least until the scardey cat woman was out of eardrum killing range. "Ow."
I glanced over to see a semi translucent figure that was pale white and wearing an elaborate ball gown. She smiled at me, and I frowned back at her.
"My eardrums do not thank you for that." I said, before sighing and following Larissa in the direction that she had fled in.

Poff had dug her claws in again, her ears flattened against her skull to block Larissa's scream. Poff yowled along with her as she ran. The woman only stopping in a quiet part of the garden with colourful fall leaves on the trees and bushes. She put her hands on her knees, bent over a bit while she caught her breath. She winced at her familiar's sharp claws in her flesh and reached up to stroke Poff to calm her down. Poff slowly relaxed, though her fur was still poofed on end. "The nerve of that ghost!" she sniffed "Fancy playing a Halloween prank on us. I ought to scratch her face off" she grumbled.
Larissa chuckled a bit "Now, now. We're all right. It was just a horrible fright is all. I bet that ghost is cackling to themselves right now, thinking this is all a big joke. I'm just glad we didn't run into any really unsavory characters" she sat down on a cold wooden bench and shivered a bit. "My heels have mud and grass all over them" she complained. "Hm? What's that?" she suddenly noticed little blobs all over the garden, and all of them were hopping towards her. Standing quickly, she whipped out her wand and tried casting a spell "Crystallize!" a jolt of light sparkles flew out of her wand and hit one of the pink coloured blobs square between the eyes. It frosted up like a glass marble...but only for a few seconds. The spell soon wore off and it squeaked menacingly as it resumed jumping towards her.
After several minutes, Poff was in a colourful tree, meowing as she watched her partner struggle under a pile of jelly blobs that seemed intent to suffocate her. A few of them zapped her with weak magic attacks.

A few moments later I strode out into the garden. I had taken my time, almost enjoying the silence and scenery of the old house. Stepping into the garden, I saw the scene; Poff up in a tree, and who I could only guess as Larissa being jumped on by jelly blobs.
"I swear, these things were a collage prank that went haywire." I said as I strode over, standing a distance away from her and the blobs. I was trying very hard not to smile in amusement, but this is funny. I doubt Larissa thinks so, though, so I kept a lid on it. "Want some help?"

Poff waved her paw, signalling Garnet to come over "Cat we get a little help purrlease? My partner is buried in blobs and I'm not touching those slimy balls. They might dirty my fur" she crouched down on the tree branch, using her tail to keep balance as she watched the scene below with her yellow eyes.
Muffled sounds came from the blob pile and Larissa struggled out of them a bit to sputter "Yes please!" before they crowded her back under. Small flashes of light were coming from inside the blob pile, Larissa's attacks weren't really doing much. It was hard to do it properly when one was panicking and forgot all the defensive spells one was supposed to know. The blobs seemed fairly harmless but they did suck warmth and energy from animate and inanimate objects so she'd eventually die...very...very...slowly or if there was hundreds of them.

I looked down at her and put my hands on my hips. The tough part will be getting rid of them without hurting her, really.
I glanced up at Poff, who of course was more worried about getting dirty then helping her mage. That would likely change the longer Larissa was buried under the blobs, but I wasn't willing to let them get that far. I do like Larissa.
I turned around and lashed out with my finned tail, catching half of the blobs with my tail and sending them flying. There was a loud, resounding SPLAT. The garden wall soon looked like a splatter of color.
I spun around again, and with another swipe of my tail sent the other half flying too. They hit the wall with an even louder splat.
I leaned down and held out my hand to help her up. "I swear, Larissa." I said, still trying not to laugh. The garden walls were not the only things now overtly colorful. "You look like someone has been flicking paint at you."

Poff watched from the tree while Garnet slashed and splashed the blobs all over the place. Larissa was finally free. But she looked like a little kid's splat art masterpiece or like she'd been playing paintball. Poff scrambled down the tree as elegantly as a cat could and landed lightly on her paws on the cold, leaf strewn grass. She strode over to Larissa, sniffing her thoroughly from a safe distance. She wasn't willing to get any of the slimy colouring on her nose. "Mew look a sight but at least you're okay" she said.
Larissa had sat up and was looking at her dress and skin with a grossed out expression. She looked at the splatters on the garden walls and giggled a bit before Garnet held out her hand. Larissa got up, nearly slipping over again from the slime on the grass and on her shoes. She clung to Garnet for balance, careful not to smear too much of the rainbow colors of slime on her.
"I know! It's terrible! My clothes are ruined. Thanks for that by the way. I didn't know they could overwhelm you so fast. I just panicked" she said.
"I'm really glad that wasn't a demon. But they did suck out some of my energy. Not much though" she tried to brush herself off, gingerly pulling the material of her dress away from her skin "Ew, this is so gross. It's like coloured snot" she complained. "Or snail slime" she shuddered. Yuck. Snails.
She looked at Poff "Are you okay Poff? They didn't get slime on you did they?"
Poff shook her head "I'm okay. And no, thank goodness. I couldn't lick it off unfortunately. It might be toxic to cats" she jumped onto Garnet's shoulder and pushed Sapphire a little aside "Move, move, make room please. I can't possibly travel on Larissa's shoulder like this and I don't want to traverse this cold haunted garden alone" she said, which was rather humble of her to admit.
Larissa groaned "Don't remind me. I feel like we're all being watched right now. It's so creepy. Let's get back to the house and get changed. I'll need a shower before I can even think of attending the masquerade tonight" she looked at Garnet. "Thank you...for helping me before. In the house. I appreciate it. And Poff does too. Let's go back. This was kind of ...kind of fun. But mostly scary."

"They're jelly slimes." I said. "That's to be expected."
I sniffed, and actually laughed this time. "They smell fruity at least!" I managed. "Maybe they're sentient jell-o." I shook my head, watching her get colors all over my white shirt. "Looks like my tail isn't the only thing getting colorful."
I glanced over at Poff as she climbed onto my shoulder, and Sapphire eyed the cat. "You could always take a bath you know." Commented the bat to the cat. "Life is boring if you are always afraid of getting dirty."
I smirked and shook my head, before turning back towards the mansion. Wait, that might not be the best idea. Sapphire chittered at the thought I just had, and Sapphire and Gossamer lit from my shoulders, shrinking and then dangling from my earrings. I held Larissa to me, lifting her off the ground as I clearly was just going to get more and more messy as moments passed.
"Now how I pictured doing this for the first time." I said as I spread my wings. "But I don't trust the doors in that mansion. Hold on you two."
I took off running for the edge of the garden, angling my wings to catch an updraft. A couple flaps and help from a breeze spell and---
I felt my feet lift the ground as the pressure went from my feet and legs to my wings. I flapped, accidentally sending us higher up into the air, clearing the garden wall and soaring over the street. "W-whoaoa!"
