Alyx got two units of wood from his first node, and considered himself lucky. He wandered about the woods for a little bit longer looking for another node, and found one after a little bit of searching. Swinging his axe at this one, he marveled at how oddly comforting this was. Just harvesting materials. Not in a constant battle for survival, just taking some time off and relaxing, looking to build something rather than to destroy it. It was just sort of soothing. He had always been more focused on battle and combat, but he had found out recently that in this game that just doesn't happen. You can't focus on combat and continue to level; there is a cap to the skill levels, and you have to level up to raise it, but you have to raise your skills to level up. Ultimately, you had to diversify if you wanted to level up. It was just mandatory.

Only one unit of wood from that one. That's okay. He wasn't in this as some sort of race. Besides, if he was going to be a carpenter, he'd better get used to harvesting wood like this. He supposed that there would be some people --like there were in every game-- that just harvested all the time and would sell their materials to actual crafters, but he would really rather not have to pay them, despite the fact that he had more money than he knew what to do with. Almost four thousand gil, and the most expensive thing he'd seen in game was a rookie health crystal at 300 Gil. He could be swimming in crystals if he so chose. But he was more responsible than that. He would save his money. Hoard his riches until he came to something that he absolutely had to have. He was still not sure how to get a plot of land to build a house yet, and he reasoned that that would cost a load of money, so maybe it was good that he was getting started saving it up now. Besides, it wasn't really all that much; four thousand base currency units was only forty silver in some systems, and he knew that that was hardly a vast amount of wealth.

Besides, where was the fun in not harvesting your own materials? It just seemed lazy. Now, the carpenter sold nails, and he knew that, so he'd have to buy those, but everything else in this game was player-driven. The players would harvest the wood, build the walls, build the houses, and presumably furnish the houses as well. At this rate, it would take some real work to build a house, though, and he could only imagine that what he was working toward right now would not be a grand mansion of any sort, but that's perfectly alright. It would be a starting point, and that's what was important. Oh, well. He'd be able to get to all that eventually. But as for now, his first wall's worth of wood had to go back to the Cook to pay for his axe. Alyx harvested the last piece he'd need and set course for the encampment again.

Alyx returned to the Cook and was informed that he could keep the woodcutter's axe. Which was lucky, because he'd rather planned on keeping it anyway. He was given a paltry sum of gil and a few skill points for his trouble. He cared more about the skill points. He was stuck, combat-wise, at level 7. If he didn't get a few levels under his belt from other skills, he'd have hit the utmost limit of his journey and he was still on the first floor. Now, true, he could always work on his block (he had seven more points he could go in block) or his --ew-- evasion. And he would work on his block. He needed to. He wanted to have block and OHSS maxed out at all times to be the best tank that he could be. But he wanted to have some room to grow before he ventured forth into the dungeon alone. That way he wasn't just wasting his time. He raised his axe and swung at the next node in the woods.

Alyx supposed that there was a way around the skill caps. If he really were leveling up a separate combat style, like THA, he might be able to focus purely on combat skills. But what would be the point? Being an incredible warrior with two different weapon styles was not likely to help him very much in the real --fictional-- world. So he'd be able to pull out his THA and waste mobs in solo combat. So what? He could waste mobs in solo combat with just his OHSS already. He practically had two combat styles now, as he only used his shield when he was leveling it up or defending someone. Little did he need an entirely new tertiary fighting style that he would only employ in the off chance that the occasion arose.

There was a part of him that missed his old fighting style, though. Pure evasion tank with a focus on damage. Perhaps less the Two-Handed Sword, and more a rapier type weapon. That would be a fun way to play, but it would require completely retraining himself, and, while it may be more conducive to a solo game style, it was hardly befitting the Gloomking, now was it? He had a reputation to uphold, now. As far as he knew he was not only the only person who'd ever beaten the Gloomweave Queen, but the only person that even played this game, so when you are your own mythos, you have to keep to tradition, else what do you really have? God he was lonely.

There was something utterly depressing about his current state of affairs; playing a Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game... By himself. He didn't even have any friends in the game, because his friends from other games must all have been busy. Which means that Alyx was basically on his own against insurmountable odds, playing a game that was meant to be a social outlet without a single connection to the real world. In short, he was a shorthand of every offensive stereotype that the world had against videogamers. It was really, really sad. But he really, really, didn't care. He was having fun, even if he was doing it by himself, and even if he had to clear the dungeon by himself --a nigh-impossible goal-- he would do it. Because why not? It was a videogame. It was not the boss of him. He was in this world, but he was above it. He was stronger than the game. He could do this.

Right after he got done chopping enough wood to level up.

This wasn't as bad as it could be. True, it may not have been as viscerally thrilling as combat, but it was at least not as boring as it could be. Every swing of the axe brought Alyxandeyr one step closer to leveling up, and so there was at least a clear and present motivation to continue. It would be worse if it were harder to raise the skill level, but it progressed at a rate that was agreeable and kept you interested. He supposed that this rapid rate of advancement was meant to keep the crowd who didn't necessarily want to take a break from combat from growing upset with the game for forcing them to diversify.

He was beginning to slip into a meditative, zen-like sort of trance, traveling from log to log and chopping them into bite-sized --byte-sized?--, portable pieces. He had a certain tune stuck in his head as he worked, and almost began humming it as he progressed. After all, he was a lumberjack, and he was okay. In fact, most everything was okay. He was level seven now, he was outfitted in nothing but rare gear, he was able to solo the biggest monsters he'd ever seen in this game, despite supposedly needing a party behind him to even survive in the game. Beyond all of that, though, --beyond and above that impressive list of accomplishments-- Alyxandeyr was royalty.

Because, while there may not necessarily be anyone in his camp or by his side, he was still recognized as and, to him anyway, that meant something. He'd worked hard and put in a lot of hours just trying to make it in this world, and look at what he'd accomplished! He, a solo player, was not only succeeding in this world, but thriving in it. Excelling in it! He had been, thus far, dominating this world. True, he'd had close calls. True, he'd lost faith and thought that all was lost now and then. But he'd persevered, and he'd fought and scratched and clawed and dragged himself into the head of the pack. And he was at the head of the pack.

Alyx had been feeling lonely, so he'd taken to the message boards in search of companionship. It was mostly a collection of those beta testers just coming into the game and the system (some of them had won a beta key but did not yet have the necessary equipment required to actually play the game) but a few others were experienced veterans coming back from their third or fourth death. In all cases, though, when the subject of difficulty came up, the players expressed a resounding noise of excited frustration. Sure, there were a few ragequitters, and some whiners who begged for the game to be made easier, but then there were those like Alyx, who relished the challenge and thrived on the rush of combat.

Of those who were like Alyx, though, few if any were on par with his abilities. It seemed that those playing the game the way it should be played (that is, in groups) were falling behind Alyx in terms of power. It seemed that while the group might be capable of taking down a bear, the individual players still struggled fighting boars. Basically, he had, due to his solo play, become a one-man army, equivalent by himself to an entire group of players. He supposed that that made sense; he was taking all of the experience for himself. As if to confirm the gap in power, on the boards, he found a few scattered mentions of the Spider Queen, with most of those being records of TPKs or people trying to scrounge together enough manpower to take her on.

Of the dungeon, he had found little information. Of course, he knew that there was a dungeon, but the people who had tried to get there had all been killed in ambushes and traps set on the way there. This filled the place with a mythical sort of aura, and many people joked that the game might be designed to prevent you from ever reaching the actual dungeon, while others simply lamented that it was impossible. Alyxandeyr was inclined to disagree. He believed that it was possible to reach the dungeon, and even to beat it, but that it took a significant investment of time and resources to do so. He didn't believe that the other players had enough patience to make it further into the game, and that they would need to learn to have that patience if they were ever to succeed.

Of the crafting and other non-combat skills, he had seen especially little posting on. This further reinforced that few if any were at Alyx' level. If anyone had made it to Alyxandeyr's point of progress, they would not only be inclined but required to begin working on the crafting skills in order to progress in level. This was not merely a game in which one could faceroll through monsters forever, but instead a game that made Renaissance Men out of its players. Diverse, multi-faceted characters who had talent in many areas of play were not just the goal, but were expected to be the norm.

So if Alyx was alone, he figured that he'd better get to working even harder. He'd given some though to recruiting from the boards, but he was still a little too nervous to start taking that sort of responsibility for others' welfare. He felt like it would be different if he met them in game, but he felt that advertising on the boards might seem a bit like... Well, advertising. And he was hesitant to begin marketing himself as a product when he wasn't completely confident in his ability to deliver the goods. True, he could solo the Gloomweave Queen, but that only showcased his survivability, not his ability to actually keep someone else alive.
