Stacking some wood up, Leshya'e began to rebuild the fire. Flashing the flint she had found over a rock, she worked on making some sparks.
"It was in my destiny to join...Maybe not this particular one, But my life lead me out to join a caravan." Leshya'e said with a slight tilt of her head, " I grew up in one myself, My family being gypsies for as many generations back as anyone can care to remember." She smiled proudly as she paused, sparking the flint a bit harder until a flame finally caught on, "When I was finally at the age where I was to set out on my own, I was given Varekai and everything I would be needing. Not very long after trekking out, I ran into Valelldia...and then, well, you know what happens after you meet up with her. Hehehe."

"It's a little like being caught up in a web - but much more enjoyable, I should think." Lorelei laughed, hands working amongst the greens. "It must be nice, knowing what's expected of you in life and actually agreeing with it. It seems like it was so straightforward and clear..."

Leshya'e nodded, then frowned slightly, "Are things not that easy from where you came from?" With the fire now going, she positioned the bread dough above it on a already warm stone to begin to the cooking process.

"It was... different." She set aside the salad bowl and drew Vanna up onto her lap. The girl curled up and listened to the two women intently, curiously.
"Not gypsy life." Lorelei had become wary in telling her life story. The longer she remained in the caravan, the more she realized it almost didn't matter. All that mattered was that she was here. "I wasn't in control."

Maeko-Hana Anezka kneeled next to Lorelei and touched Vanna's hand. Not gypsy life? What other life is there? she thought to herself. Not wanting to interupt the adults conversation, she remained quiet and smiled at her purple friend.
"I couldn't even start to imagine," Leshya'e said with a frown, empathyzing with the woman. She didn't want to pry, so she decided to let her new friend lead off where she desired, where she felt comfortable. Elysia Kavanagh So Lorelei let it drop.
Vanna peered up at Anezka, smiling and blinking happily, though sleepily. It looked as if the moment the little fey got some food into her, she'd conk out for a nice, long nap. She yawned, clutching at Lorelei's dress and snuggling close. Maeko-Hana Leshya'e slowly nodded her head to Lorelei's silence. Picking up a stick, she lifted up the bread and the checked that it was done. She nodded and then coughed into her hand, "Breads done...and the salad is ready, once we add the dressing...so...we can eat now. I'll just go and grab some smaller bowls and utensils for us." She smiled and stood up, heading back to Varekai. Elysia Kavanagh Lorelei watched her go with a faint smile, grateful that Lesh hadn't pressed. She turned her attention, then, to her daughter and Anezka.
"Well!" she said, happily. "Seems we'll be having a nice dinner, hm?" She wanted conversation, wanted to draw Anezka a little out of her quiet shell. She knew that shyness was her own weakness, and whenever she saw it in others... she sought to fix it in them. Maeko-Hana "Yes...I like when Mum makes greens for dinner. I think you will too." Anezka said with a smile, her bucked-teeth popping over her lower lip. She reached up and lightly scratched at her long ears, then giggled before reaching her hand back out to tickled at Vanna.
Returning with a few small wooden bowls, some forks and some serving utensils, Leshya'e set them down and then broke the bread. Handing half to Lorelei, she placed the other half on her lap. "The dressing for the salad...it's right there" She said, gesturing, "Add it to the salad as you like..." Elysia Kavanagh Lorelei smiled. "I'm sure I will."
Vanna giggled and was still laughing when Lesh came back. Lorelei carefully moved part of the salad to the bowl she would share with Vanna, adding a little dressing and taking the bread. It was hard to move with a small child squirming in her lap!
Luckily, Vanna calmed when saw the food. She reached out for some, and Lorelei gave her a bit of bread. The girl happily took to munching on it, stuffing it into her mouth.
"Thank you, again," Lorelei said, laughing at her daugher and taking a bite of the salad. Maeko-Hana Anezka laughed at Vanna and then put some salad into a bowl for herself. She then went silent again, aside from nibbling & chomping sounds.
"Thank you" Leshya'e replied, "I'm glad to share...And it's not to be so alone." She smiled and reached over, giving Lorelei's shoulder a reassuring grip. Glancing around at the four of them and seeing that everyone but herself was eating, she brought her hand back to her lap and tore off a hunk of the bread to chew on. Elysia Kavanagh Lorelei smiled, focusing on her food and the feeling of family. She watched how Vanna gnawed on her bread. When the girl had finished, Lorelei carefully fed her little leaves from the salad.
She ate herself, too, but not very much.
"I will always be glad to have you over for a meal," Lorelei commented. "Feel free to come and knock whenever you need company." Maeko-Hana "I'll be sure to remember that...And I know Ani won't let me forget. I'm sure she'll want to see her new friend more." Leshya'e glanced over at Anezka and laughed at what she was greeted with. Anezka's head was nodding, her mouth wide with a smile, and a leafy bit from the salad caught between her two front teeth. Elysia Kavanagh Vanna giggled, too, but then yawned. She barely managed to swallow the leaf she was munching on before she yawned again and curled up against Lorelei, sleepy.
Lorelei finished up, smiling at Lesh and Ani. "I'd love to stay and talk more, but I think Vanna needs to go down for a nap." Maeko-Hana "I'd say so," Lesh smiled and nodded at Vanna, "Thank you for joining Ani and I for our meal. Let's be sure to do so again." She gathered some things together, cleaning up, then stood up to bid good-bye and good rest to Lorelei and Vanna.
Anezka cocked an eyebrow, but soon figured out what was wrong. Picking the leaf from her teeth, she placed her salad bowl down on the ground and stood up. "Yes. I'd like to play with Vanna more, please." Elysia Kavanagh Lorelei stood up as well, holding her dear, mostly asleep child. She nodded her thanks to Lesh, then looked at Anezka.
"Of course you will! I think, if she wasn't so sleepy, she would be playing with you still right now."
She looked back to Lesh. "Well, then. I suppose I'll see you two later," she murmured, dropping an instinctual, small curtsy before going back to her wagon. Maeko-Hana Anezka curtsied back to Lorelei and then helped her mother clean up from their meal, returning to their wagon to finish eating there.
Leshya'e walked back with Anezka and grabbed a bucket of water, putting out the fire she had built to bake the bread. "I think Vanna had a good idea...I'll be taking a nap now, Ani." She yawned and went to bed.

Entry the Seventeenth
As the days, weeks, and months pass, I get to know my fellow gypsies more and more. You would think that traveling with them for so long would mean we knew each other intimately. But the road is hard, and most of our time is spent feeding our animals, making repairs, cooking food, and taking care of our children. And sleeping - I am always tired by the end of the day, something I never knew at home. In fact, I've been so tired that I've hardly written. Over the past few months, I have shared meals with Leshya'e and Ki. Shy is as much a gypsy as I always thought she was. She gave me all sorts of tips, things I never would have thought of. For instance, when Vanna grows out of her clothing, I can use that same fabric for headscarves and belts. I never had to think like that back home. She also gave me a few recipes, and we enjoyed a nice meal. Ki was different - she was more like DeArca and myself in that she is reserved by nature, and partially outside of the caravan proper. She's been with the caravan longer than I, yet knows less. She's sweet, though, and a good mother to her son, Van. She, like DeArca, sees me as a way to grow into the caravan more. I must admit, I'm worried that they put so much faith in me - but I will do my best. More recently, we came across a trader. She was... sick. Very sick. And yet she sold medicine and a few other items. I bought from her a set of scissors and make-up. She said that it will help disguise me. For when I'm in Tempranillo. I hope it works.

Aleysius blinked- once, then twice. The kernel within the meij was obviously destined for those within its wagon.

When Aleysius cried out, Lorelei turned her head from where she sat cradling Vanna in her lap. The girl had gone down for a nap after a long night of hyperactivity. Lorelei herself was tired, eyes heavy. But Aleysius' words snapped her awake, and she stared at him, listening, already begin to puzzle. While so much of it seemed unfathomable, the last line... Well, she knew what it was asking. They were only a day or two from Tempranillo. She had no idea if the scissors would change her appearance for an hour or a day. She had been putting off trying for weeks, ever since she'd bought the objects. But with this sanction from the meij... Shifting Vanna carefully onto the bed, Lorelei stood up and went over to her trunk, riffling through her few belongings. She pulled out the scissors, watching them gleam in the early morning light that streamed through her window. Then she took a bit of hair from her curly half-bangs and cut off about half an inch. She felt the change immediately. Her skin tingled. She fought the urge to cry out, closing her eyes. She hoped that it was only a side effect of the glamour, and feared that she may have done something terrible. By draw, perhaps the fortune had meant the paint? But she didn't want to sweat the makeup off, so she had always planned to use the scissors. And now... She opened her eyes, looking in the mirror. Her eyes widened. No longer green, but blue. Her hair, blonde. And her skin... her skin... She reached up to touch her cheek. It hurt. She gasped. She took a step back, and found herself wobbling on legs longer than she had had before. One of her eyes refused to open. She stared at her reflection. Her reflection. Because it seemed... It seemed that the scissors... enacted a more permanent change. She held a different face, now. A face deformed by hideous sores. She dreaded Vanna's awakening.

All the Banya spewed forth fortunes. They all did. Of course, mine was simply a little more alarming, and sent me running towards my scissors...
It told me 'to paint my face anew'.
Perhaps I should have used the make-up instead.
Whatever it was, I used the scissors. And now... I hurt. I hurt all over. I'm covered in sores, and my face is not my own, and I don't even recognize the look in my eyes. Vanna is worried. So am I.
But we forge onward. We must.

-written in a new hand-
I write for Lorelei, for she cannot.
I do not know the whole story. Lorelei is hard-pressed to tell me all of it. She has spent most of the last day alternately crying and sitting very, very still. I do my best to help her, but I'm not used to dealing with this. I want to help her. Can I?
I... perhaps I should write my name, but does it matter? She's the only one who reads this. I... well. I'm Leax. I'm her... I don't know. Perhaps lover is not quite appropriate yet. I'm her helper. Her partner. I don't want to leave her.
Anyway, I'll put down what I know. Perhaps she will elaborate on it, one day.
There was a festival in Tempranillo. The streets were full of people. I was there looking for her, but I didn't find her until it was too late. But that's getting ahead of the story...
From what I know, things went smoothly. Children grew. People met, people parted, and they participated in the ceremonies. Lorelei was almost chosen to be the mother of the Savior - isn't that amusing? My Lorelei, the holy mother. But no, that honor went to another in the caravan.
Then... she went to the docks. She said it was to help somebody. One of the other children. And it was fine, but then... then... one of the children of the caravan - he was possessed, controlled, it seems - came, and struck Lorelei and Vanna with a curse. Now she can no longer look at Vanna. If she does, she is struck blind. It hurts a lot. She screams and cries.
I heard her cries and came to her. She was changed. She looks so different. So ill. She says it should pass, and I hope that it does. But even if it doesn't, I will be here with her. I swear it.
We covered her eyes, the other members of the caravan and I.
And now I stay with her and hold her and help care for her daughter.

He was unhappy at sea, as were all the other Fire Banyas. There had been much dissent in the wagon, and that too, irked at the beautiful Fen and gave the bird pause to search the meij for a vicious kernel. Your Daughter will see Her father before She can see you Her Sea Loam was kinder. The second to last sister You will have to help her, too.

Lorelei was lying on her bed with a cold wet cloth over her eyes. It served a double purpose - it soothed her aching sores and kept her blind to her daughter's face. Vanna was napping at her side, and Leax had taken a break from stroking his lover's hair to get her a glass of water.
When their Banya began to sing, Lorelei stirred, but didn't move the cloth. She frowned, as did Leax.
Leax returned to her side, helping her sit up (so as not to disturb the still-napping Vanna) and held the glass to her lips. She sipped, slowly, before speaking.
"... But can't she already see you?" she murmured, leaning into Leax's warm touch.
"I've never heard of a Banya stating the obvious before, but..."
