Hearing that Emelyn had taken Emerwyn to the labs was surprising. That did not sound like the Emelyn he had come to know. Perhaps that incident occured before the lockout?
It took Lucas a moment to realize that Emerwyn was waiting for him to speak.
"I really don't know what to say. Emelyn is a kind woman and I would like for her to be happy." Or as close as she could come to that here. The scene back in his apartment as Emelyn spoke feverishly, crying and asking not to be left alone played in his head.

Emerwyn's lips pursed for a moment. She had an idea. Leaning forward, she took the pad away from Lucas once more, then took the pen gently from his hand.
She held the pad close, and began to write fervently.
"Emelyn is indeed very kind. She also has a strange way of accepting that which she can not understand." Emerwyn did not look up, nor did she stop writing as she spoke. She spoke about herself at this latter statement. "She was the last person I spoke to before I turned to shadow. And she helped me to find my way back out. She and Greer had more patience than I would ever ask of anyone." Now she looked up at Lucas, with an odd smirk playing at her lips. "I am not always the easiest person to speak with."

Was that what she was really writing?
Lucas returned Emerwyn's smirk with a confused look, then a small smile.
Reaching for his cup, he took a sip, then winced when the hot tea brushed against his cut. The next sip he took me made sure to keep the liquid away from that side of his mouth. "You don't want me to write it anymore? Good tea," he added.

"Oh, you are writing it... trust me...
Now... Emelyn was attacked by Joliette. And you found her. Was that the first time you'd met her?" She felt like a journalist. She'd never done this kind of writing before. But then again, she wasn't writing it. Lucas was. He just didn't realize it yet.

He was writing it? Maybe she meant that he would rewrite it?
"No, I met her a little before the attack in the jungle. We sat and talked for a while."

"A quiet talk in the jungle... I am sure you covered the basics of introductions, but after that... Emelyn struck you as a kind person. And you want for her to be happy."
Emerwyn looked to him again after jotting something else down. "She was staying with you after she was hurt... tell me about that."

"Um, there's not much to tell. I just helped her back to my duplex. I cleaned up her wounds as best I could. Then let her rest. I'd bring her food and watch Reuben." He hoped she wouldn't press him for more details. "There was a night a few days back when it was raining. Emelyn forgot she left her valuables out at her cave. I went out there to try and get them before they were ruined. Unfortunately I changed while I was out." He scratched at the fur around his face. "The next morning Emelyn took off and ended up in the labs."

Emerwyn nodded slowly. She was about done. The rest was for Lucas.
She handed him the pad.
Emelyn
You have been found to be family. You are held close as a friend. What you give to us, we wish only to give back. As you have helped in times past, we wish to help you know in the only way we know how. You know the power of words. Maybe these words can help you, too.
It seems that sometimes we can become lost. And it is not easy to find our way back. Oftentimes, we are led to believe that we are the only ones who can save ourselves. While this is true, oftentimes, there are other times, times when we need to know that someone else is there. We have had people in the past. People from the time before who were our family, who were our friends, who were people we loved. It has happened again. You have found to be family. You are held close as a friend.
Reach out to your friends, and while they may not be able to pull you to your feet, they will sit down on the floor in frustration right beside you.

Lucas read over the letter once. Then a second time. When he finished he looked up and smiled. "This is great, Emerwyn. I know this is better than anything I could have come up with. It seems, though, that you did most of the work." He looked at her sheepishly.

"Oh no... of course not. I merely dictated... with a fare amount of artistic license, I do admit.
But... tell me. Do you believe in what I wrote here?" Her eyes were always deep and shadowed, the brown sparkling distantly. Like something was hiding in there that you could never quite reach.

"Well... I doubt I'm family or a close friend to her. I think she thinks of me as just some weird guy that found her and took care of her, like some male nurse at a hospital." He laughed. "I do think of her as my friend, though. And I do want to help her. I don't like to see anyone alone, sad or in pain."

"Then that is enough," Emerwyn said, and when she said it, it was final. No one was going to argue this point any further.
"But, I must say, I am impressed that you manage to read it." The writing was indeed sloppy and inconsistent, but legible with patience, especially for those used to bad writing. "I would rather not have Emelyn suffer the same fate. Perhaps you should re-write it. Feel free to add anything you wish." She passed him the pen.

"Well, I had to read it twice. But the writing wasn't that bad. And I think it's fine as it is. There's nothing I could add."
Figuring Emerwyn meant for him to rewrite it then, he got to work. Using his best handwriting, he completed the new copy and turned back to the brunette. "I've signed both our names." He stood up. "I hate to rush out, but I'm going to head toward the labs now. Hopefully I'll get there and back before sundown. Thank you for all your help, Emerwyn. Really, thank you." He folded the letter carefully. "And thanks for the tea."

She rose with him when it was done. "That is just fine."
She walked him to the door. "Wonderful. I am certain they will see that it gets to her. After all, there is nothing harmful... the sooner she gets out of there, the better. For everyone, including the doctors." She smiled brightly at Lucas. This had all left her rather rejuvinated. "We began and ended our visit with a letter. I thank you for returning it. Farewell, Lucas. Until we meet again."

He smiled. This had cheered him up, as well. After spending so many days feeling guilty and worrying for his friend, he finally felt good. This is what he needed. He felt like he was doing something to help her now.
He looked at the letter. Hopefully this would be what Emelyn needed, too.
"You're welcome, Emerwyn. Hopefully we'll see each other again soon. Take care." He waved, called for Reuben, and started for the labs.
