Harbinger of Pandamonium Rae x Rae Lex Joseph Luthor Rae x Rae emo No one is on AIM. Tonight is lonely. Sadly, I must go to work soon, else i'd try to amuse you. Or is it abuse? Whichever. I get plenty of abuse already. When Stream's not eating me and Spider's not making awful bunny jokes about picking me up by the tail or hitting me with newspapers, I've got Kin using third grade insults. People are already mean enough emo So if you ever do pop up, can I ask for amusement and not abusement, plz? I am tempted to post the kitty-rawr .gif now. .... stfu mad

I have a petly question for Mala.
My boyfriend and I are going to be moving in together. He has two cats, I have one cat one dog. I suggested we get everybody updated on shots before moving in.
His cat, Norton, has rage. He is really worried about taking her to the vet and them being mauled. Is there a way to...keep her calm? He also wants to try and use those soft caps for her claws. How well do those work if we could even get them on her?

His cat, Norton, has rage. He is really worried about taking her to the vet and them being mauled. Is there a way to...keep her calm? He also wants to try and use those soft caps for her claws. How well do those work if we could even get them on her? There are a few medications that can be given for sedation, like acepromazine, but they're prescription. He'd need to check with the vet if it'd be possible to get some. If Norton hasn't been seen regularly, they may not be able to dispense it.
Feliway works for some, but not all cats. There are also loads of "homeopathic" anxiety treatments out there, but I don't have enough experience with them to say either way on those. I know a couple people have tried them and felt they really helped. As I recall, Kansai used one before taking her cat in to be shaved, and said that the cat basically seemed drunk, but more cooperative than usual. (Edit: I have heard some fairly positive things about Rescue Remedy, in particular.)
The claw covers work really well as long as you can get them glued on securely. We've put them on a few cats and it can be a little bit of a pain, but it's generally worth it for the damage reduction.
I seem to get a lot of owners who're convinced their cat will be a holy terror in the clinic, but a surprising number of the cats do really well. But then there are the ones that really live up to the expectations. sweatdrop In those cases, the sedation is definitely helpful.

She has been fixed, but that is about it. He wants to get her shots updated and microchipped. She can be really difficult and scratchy. She is sweet, but gets full of rage when she doesn't get her way. Right now, he is living in his aunts basement which is where the cats have to stay. So she is always trying to get out. And when she doesn't she gets pissy. I think she will be okay, but he is really worried. We are going to get his other cat, Trixie in soon and I was going to talk to my vet about them about Miss Norton. I think they will be able to handle her...

Yeah, in that case they might not be able to get her any acepromazine, but it's worth asking when you're in with the other kitty. :3
But yeah, most cats are still pretty manageable, even if they're a little crabby. Chances are she'll be fine, but if he's worried enough, Feliway or Rescue Remedy might be worth trying, although neither is really cheap, and there's a chance they won't do anything.
