River was understandably frightened. Her defensive tactic had been dismissed by one really frightening and in-need-of-anger-management Beautifly. It was so unfair, but she still had one clone left-- Nevermind.

The Feeling Pokemon still ran around, frantic, and she managed to swing around and get behind
Aerosmith. She leapt, paw (hand?) drawing back as she neared her target. She shrieked.

Aerosmith turned, only to have River punch him in the eye and fall down.

"..." River was honestly expecting the blow to be stronger.

Aerosmith closed his right eye, shaking his head, before managing a one-eyed glare.

River began hyperventilating.

"Fllllyyyy!" Aerosmith screeched, wings angrily flapping. Abruptly, a strong surge of wind slammed right into River.

"Gust...?" Jett stared, and then he realized that his Pokemon had most likely learned some new moves that he should definitely check out when their day was all. I remember looking up their moves... he'll learn Stun Spore next, and River gets something called Lucky Chant... His jaw clenched, and he nodded once to his Pokemon, who were still fighting. I guess that'll be my goal level... and then... He didn't complete that thought, distracted by the fight, but he was sure that they could handle themselves much better at level 17 against that certain woman.

All he could do now is hope for the best and trust his friends.

It was safe to say that Riza was more than a little caught off guard when Crenu stopped, and apologized for earlier. For a moment she just stared at him incredulously, wondering what this strange person had done with the real Shiro. She watched him closely, trying to decipher his expressions even though he looked genuinely apologetic, and there was almost something strange about his eyes. She blinked and looked away, her gaze resting on the bandages of his hand and arm for only a split second. It appeared as though his wounded arm had finally stopped bleeding, though. "I only ask questions because I.....care," she said finally, the words feeling completely strange coming from her own mouth. Again this territory of relationships and whatnot was foreign to her as she'd come from a broken family, but she decided to let common sense (and what she'd learned from several daytime dramas, or the good parts about faithfulness and honesty and all that jazz) rule here. She looked back at him again, her face nearly expressionless, save for the hint of confusion in her eyes. "I honestly don't know what 'we' are," she said, gesturing back and forth between them, "but if 'we' are something, you're going to have to learn to let me care about you, worry about you, and take care of you. It doesn't make you weak or useless to share your burdens with someone you care about. If anything, trying to do all that yourself makes you stupid and delusional." She cleared her throat and moved closer to him, stopping only when she could feel his breath on her cheek. "Let me take care of you, and in turn, you can take care of me. That's what couples do," she whispered. Then, as though to accentuate her point, she stood up on tiptoe, her heart pounding dangerously against her rib cage, and she kissed him, but not like the quick little kisses and pecks they'd shared before. This kiss was different: deeper, passionate. And she thought that if this didn't get through to him and show him just how she felt, then nothing else ever would.

Katie's expression was soft as she recalled her fainted Roselia and clipped the ball onto her belt. "Thanks, Gardenia," she said, giving a slight nod. "Hearing that from you means a lot." She herself had no doubt that Seraphim would grow not only in loveliness but in power too, and she looked over at the paralyzed Turtwig, carefully considering her next Pokemon. 'I can't send Nell out there, I don't know her moves and battle style well enough yet,' she thought. 'Miles and Kord are too weak to fight anymore, and I'm sure Gardenia has something tricky up her sleeve after Turtwig, so I'm gonna wanna save Genki for last. So that means...' Her thoughts trailed off as she plucked a poke ball from her belt, and she threw it. "Noa, you're up next!" she shouted.

The oddly coloured Staravia appeared in a bright flash of light accompanied by brilliant sparkles, and she flapped her wings, resulting in a few tawny brown feathers floating to the ground in her wake. She let out a loud chirp, looking quite eager to battle, especially when that awful flaming-money wasn't around to show her up. "Let's start off with a Quick Attack!" Katie shouted, hoping to use the Staravia's superior speed to take advantage of Turtwig's paralyzed state. The Staravia sped into action, flying up and then down, white light glittering behind her as she raced towards the grass-type.

"Come, let's return to our guests," Milton said lightly, setting Diego down so that he could gingerly pick up the positively snoring Ulani. "Graceful little bird, isn't she?" he chuckled. Diego said nothing.

The two artists followed the sound of M.A.'s voice to the source -- it wasn't that she was talking particularly loudly, but in the silent mansion, any noise was easy to find.

"-- not as scary as you think it is, I promise!"

"I-I..." Rebecca paused, her little brow furrowing. Some memory replayed in her mind, though her expression, as before, remained more or less aloof and stony. "I don't really... like adults. They're scary. Oh, oh! Except Uncle Milton, of course," she added hastily, as if frightened by the idea of forgetting that exclusion.

M.A. looked at the child with analytical eyes. It must be because she was so timid, that she was afraid of those mysteriously bigger, more powerful entities, Mary-Anne figured; she had not been shy as a child, but she figured children came in all sorts of temperaments. "They're not bad, really, these 'adults' that you speak of. I mean, I'm as tall as one, and you're not scared of me anymore, are you?" Becca shook her head. "And sometimes they're as grumpy as Daemyn, but you're not scared of him, are you?" Once again, a shake for the negative. "Why don't I take you on a little field trip tomorrow, if your uncle says okay? We'll go look at all sorts of different Pokemon -- yeah, there's a lot out there! Ones even cuter than Daemyn -- maybe shop a little, maybe even meet some kids your age! It's summer vacation and all, you know."

From around the corner, Milton frowned, the eye beneath his steel half-moon mask gleaming a bit. "So she's trying to take away my Becca, too?" Diego, alarmed, looked up at Milton, but could see nothing threatening in the mask that was Milton's cordial expression. Before the Smeargle could say anything, Milton strode into the open. "Oh, hello! There you are, my friends. As you see, M.A., your Swablu's currently snoozing... Becca, come here," he said, giving a small, paternal little wave over. The little girl, almost guilty, traipsed over so that she was directly next to her 'uncle Milton,' and the artist gently patted her head. Per instructions, she took Ulani from Milton's hands and trotted back a foot or two to give her to Ulani before returning to the man's side.

"You two looked like you were getting along swimmingly!" Milton smiled. M.A. reciprocated, while Rebecca became stone again under Milton's touch. "Come, let's have some dinner. I went to town recently, we've got some grand gnocchi. Store-made, I'm afraid, as I'm not too good at cooking, since following cut-and-dry instructions seems ever so dull, though it produces in the best results," Milton chuckled at his own folly. Daemyn, now under no threat from M.A.'s foot, growled underneath his breath. Still didn't like this guy! But he was hungry...

Claire and Kokoro followed behind the Espeon as it lead the way through the winding underground base. It was pretty elaborate for a base that was recently rebuilt. Claire thought to herself, so far these treatments seemed to be ineffective and the girl thought that they might actually be making things worse since her more recent memories were also somewhat hazy. After a couple minutes, the team was at the medical center of the base.

“Right on time, Ms. Claire.” The scientist in the medical room noted as he got up from his computer. “We’ll get you hooked up and begin.” The mans assistant began to put on the headgear that was supposed to stimulate Claire’s brain into remembering her past. After a bit of fine tuning, they seated the girl down and started.

Espeon had taken a seat near the door while everyone was busy with the commotion. With a faint pink sparkle in her eyes, she reached out with her mind to the machine that controlled Claire’s treatment. After a little fiddling, the machine was rewired so that it would appear to have worked successfully, but would in reality have done absolutely nothing.

Kokoro had been uneasy since entering the room, as she had for each attempt beforehand when she happened to be out of her Pokeball during the procedure. She wanted to burn the place down, it had to be wrong! Meanwhile, out of the corner of her eye she noted the Espeon’s actions. What are you doing?

Me? Oh, nothing, nothing at all! The Sun Pokemon said with a sly grin. If you really want to know, you’ll have to come and chat with my master and me this evening.

---

“Now, Moti Lotus…” Macabre said as the orange haired man moved into the room. “You’ve been with us for a while now and although you’ve done well with the new recruits, I believe it is time for you to put those apparently good skills of yours to good use.” Macabre folded his hands in his lap and spun around to his desk and clicked a button, turning on a projector on another wall.

“Um, I’d rather not…” Moti trailed off as Macabre gave him a stern look. “Then again, it could be pretty fun.” Moti added scratching the back of his head.

“Now, we’re going to pay a visit to the Lashley Institute of Memory over in Kanto. They have research that is important to Claire’s progress and have graciously agreed to provide us all of their data and resources for our problem.” Macabre took the time to stress all the ironic phrases he had used in his previous statement. “We’ll fly you over to Cerulean tomorrow morning and you can make your way on foot to the Institute. I’m sure you can come up with a plan to discretely procure all the data and any other technological resources we need to carry out our operations. With that last stunt the boss pulled, we're sure to be under a lot of suspicion from various authorities.” Macabre adjusted his glasses once more.

"You're dismissed." Moti walked out of the room and scratched the back of his head once more. You get all that? How're things on your end?

Things look good. Yang responded as the crew left the room for Claire's barracks. She felt decidedly better after this session for some reason, but the day was wearing on her and she was ready for a nice rest.

The van sped on down the road with Akane sitting in the passenger seat, an upbeat pop song quietly playing on the radio to fill the awkward silence in the cab of the van. Akane's mind raced. Wasn't this the kind of thing that her parents warned her about? What was she thinking? Was this really the way to Viridian City? It didn't look familiar at all ... What if this strange guy was in Team Rocket and was just waiting for a good time to kick her out of the van and drive off with Twinkers? Panic was starting to settle in ... what on earth possessed her to ask for the ride? She hugged Twinkers a little tighter.

"You don't have to be scared, ya know" preempted the delivery guy.

"Really?" squeaked the tense young trainer. She was gripping the armrest tightly without realising it.

"Really, really" replied the young man. He spared a glance at Akane and smiled at her reassuringly before his eyes snapped back to the road. "I must say I'm impressed that you had the guts to ask for the ride, most new trainers don't have the guts. Speaking of, you shouldn't second guess your gut instincts - they are right more often than not. Ya know?"

Akane pondered this as she calmed down, all the while silently scolding herself for getting so worked up. As the van kept on going and Akane spied two young trainers battling in a clearing not far from the road. A Bulbasaur and Pidgey battling it out. The van was putting too much distance between her and the battle before she could see who was winning.

"So why get the ride to Viridian? I am going as far as Saffron, ya know? And the biggest part of the journey for a trainer is the journey itself, not the destination - or so they say ..." It was clear that the delivery driver also saw the battle and saw that Akane saw the battle too.

"That's where I can catch the Pokemon I want. Bellossom are so pretty and would be a big help when I try and win my first Gym Badge." Akane started trying to imagine what a Bellossom would smell like.

"I didn't think there were Bellossom in the Forest ... " replied the delivery guy thoughtfully, obviously trying to put his mind to the task.

"There aren't. At least as far as I know. I'll have to get an Oddish and evolve it. But I'd have to find a Sun Stone somewhere for that to happen ... or I'll be stuck with a Gloom" Akane's frown made it clear what she thought about that happening though.

Aerosmith was not amused. He fired off another String shot, attempting to catch the now teleporting River. The Butterfly Pokemon was growing really tired of this whole battle.

But then he closed his eyes and remembering that Geodude obliterating him. 'Dude!' It repeated within his mind, a madness mantra, and he felt himself getting angrier and angrier. And then the other battle with
River, when she descended upon him.

That was it.

"Beautifly," Aerosmith hissed, mouth unfurling as he looked up. Without warning, he began Absorb, just as
River appeared and began her descent. She glowed a bright green before a series of orbs gathered quickly around the Beautifly.

"Nice going!" Jett called from the sidelines, grinning. "Nice to see you using strategy like that, Aerosmith!"

Aerosmith was far from done. He used String Shot, wrapping around the Ralts before he hurled her to the ground and began Poison Sting.

River's head was throbbing, but she managed to focus when she hit the ground and saw the needles coming. She fired off a Confusion, crushing the attack in the wake of the telekinetic force.

The Feeling Pokemon fired off another Confusion with as much force as she could muster. The Psychic attack hit its mark, sending
Aerosmith even higher in the sky.

"Fly," Aerosmith retorted, wincing. That Absorb had definitely helped him take that last attack, but he could not risk more of those. He began to furiously flap his wings again, sending another Gust at River. "Beautifly!"

River leapt back and Teleported, disappearing from sight. This time, however, she didn't return.

"...River?"

Her mind and body tingled with a strange numbness as Kasiya watched Mike wrestle Napalm to the ground. Had her mind been in the right place she probably would have pieced together the fact that her dear friend was not reduced to a crispy critter from the Magmar's flaming body, and it wasn't until she heard Sasha's voice saying her name that she blinked and snapped out of her little trance. "Yeah, that's definitely not normal," she replied, perhaps a little too nonchalantly. Her gaze flickered over to Portabello has he once again relayed the story of how Mike obtained his fiery powers, all the while clutching poor little Camarae even tighter, as though somehow the Omanyte's shell, by extension, would magically protect her. And perhaps it did, as her naive little mind eagerly yet subconsciously censored out the mean and nasty words - unfortunate end, resurrection, gone, bring him back - that had she heard otherwise would probably have sent her over the edge, even though her subconscious was painfully aware and understanding of the Breloom's words.

Her expression was uncharacteristically stoic as she turned to meet Sasha's terrified gaze, and after a moment or so, the corners of her mouth slowly upturned into a small smile. "What is there to be afraid of?" she asked, her tone genuinely surprised. "This is Mike you're talking about. After all, he's always loved Fire-type Pokemon, now he essentially is one," she added brightly, though she did frown slightly when she thought of something else. "Though, if he does have Moltres' essence with him, that means he can't hug us anymore," she said sadly.

She smiled at Sasha once more and then stood up quite abruptly and made her way back down towards the arena, just as Kilik went off to go and have Cable healed. However, this time she'd managed to forget the raised platform that lead down to the main floor as her gaze had been fixed on Mike, and she awkwardly stumbled off it. First and foremost she clutched Camarae tightly to her chest, more worried for the young fossil Pokemon's safety than her own, and she met the floor with her knees and right elbow. "I'm okay," she said quickly, getting to her feet like nothing had happened despite the fact that both her knees were now bleeding profusely, having not been as lucky as her elbow. She'd only managed to hear the tail end of Mike's declaration of retribution but she still got the gist of it, and even though she was sure he already knew what her answer would be, she beamed at him. "Count me in, Mikey," she said, also marking the first real sentence she'd said to him since their arrival on Cinnabar. "Our record when battling together is flawless. There's absolutely no way you can do this without me." She wanted desperately to hug him, but her mind quickly reminded her that it would be akin to hugging a tree that was on fire, so she settled for hugging Camarae instead. Geebus, by now that poor little guy must have been sick of being squeezed and squashed by the blonde girl, though chances were good that she wasn't strong enough to really hurt him, what with that rocky shell and all.

With a dramatic flourish, Jake pointed the sleek, red device at the gooshy brown Pokemon, waiting expectantly for something amazing to happen. After all, he really had no idea how to work the thing, but it became apparent he was doing it wrong as both the Bidoof and Turtwig stared at him like he had a three heads sprouting from his shoulders. Turtwig was especially stunned - just how utterly helpless was this boy? Did he have to do everything himself? Grumbling, Turtwig jumped up and gently snatched the red device from the boy's hand. He pawed at the switch on the side, actually opening the thing up and turning it on, and then he indicated the button to be used for scanning new Pokemon. He'd seen Professor Rowan show new trainers how to use their PokeDexes so often he felt kinda like an expert or something.

"...Oh," Jake muttered, ignoring the smug look Turtwig was giving him as he snatched back his PokeDex and practically thrust it in the Bidoof's direction, his thumb jamming down the proper button angrily to initiate the scanner. "Know-It-All," he added, shooting an annoyed glare at the Tiny Leaf Pokemon while the PokeDex searched through its database.

"Bidoof, the Plump Mouse Pokemon," the computerized and monotonous voice stated quite matter-of-factly. "They live in groups by the water-" Jake quickly noticed the distinct lack of water in the area and frowned doubtfully at the PokeDex's accuracy "-but often migrate in search of food or other materials used in building their nests. They are more agile and active than they appear and are difficult to perturb due to their steel-clad nerves. They constantly gnaw on trees and boulders to whittle down their continually-growing front teeth, which have been proven to grow at the same rate as Rattata's."

Jake wasn't entirely sure what a Rattata was right away, but for some reason it seemed very familiar to him, and he felt a sudden flare of annoyance shoot through him when he was able to visualize the tiny little purple rat Pokemon in his mind. "Rattata are everywhere," he frowned, looking up from the PokeDex and over to the Bidoof, who was still sitting there, perhaps a little too afraid of this very odd human to move, at least until Turtwig had taken his place beside it again. The brown Pokemon nodded and took its leave, quickly scurrying back into the tall grass, and Jake scoffed. "Bidoof, seriously?" he chortled, snapping his PokeDex shut and stuffing it back in his pocket as he got to his feet. "That has got to be the weakest, most pathetic-looking Pokemon I have ever seen." Well, not that he really remembered most of the Pokemon he'd encountered before whatever it was had happened to him, but it was the principle of the thing. Besides that, Rowan had told him to study and examine Pokemon that interested him, and that little Bidoof had definitely been far from enthralling. "Come on, Turtwig, there's got to be more interesting Pokemon around here somewhere," the boy grumbled as the pair went onwards.

Meanwhile, a pair of gleaming, beady black eyes were watching the human and his Turtwig with the utmost seriousness as they walked away, a low growl now escaping the creature's throat. Pathetic and weak, he'd said? Well, it was about time this human learned the meaning of those two words! Reaching deep within itself, the creature emerged from its hiding place, sunlight glinting off her razor-sharp front teeth. This was one Bidoof that wasn't about to let some stupid human talk about her species that way! With a feral roar (that sounded more like an enraged screech) she bolted forward, gnashing her teeth together as she chased after the tall human, eager to teach him a lesson he would never forget!

Viridian City came into view before very long and Akane found that she felt a little sad that she would be parting company with the nice delivery man. She said her farewells to the man as he dropped her at the Viridian Pokemon Center. The white Silph Co. Van glided away as Akane took in the imposing structure. This place was big, which luckily meant that it would be easy to find again.

But that could wait until later. Seeing as it was still well before lunchtime Akane thought that some shopping before lunch was just the thing she needed. Her blue dress wasn't exactly cut out for trekking though the woods looking for an Oddish. Neither were her shoes, something a little sturdier was needed.

After some wandering she found several clothes shops and bought a few things that would be suitable, were cute, and were on sale. Twinkers followed along and gave advice as needed - poking a tongue out to say no and jumping excitedly for yes. Akane's new outfit consisted of sturdy hiking shoes, a green skort, a matching shirt with a red scarf, a belt and some new hair ribbons. She changed in store, placed her old dress and shoes into her messenger bag, and left with the feeling that she could do this. She was so intent on psyching herself up for the challenges ahead that she walked right into a teenage boy. He was eating a hamburger and talking with a bunch of other boys around his age, that was until a certain adorable young trainer collided with him and made him drop his food onto the sidewalk.

"Hey! That was my lunch!" the youth exclaimed in anger. "Right! That's it, I challenge you! You look like you just might have enough cash to cover another burger ... but maybe not. Either way this ought to be fun." The evil grin that played on the kids lips as he pulled out two pokeballs out of his pocket was enough to make Akane feel as though she had swallowed an iron ball.

The boy held his two Pokeballs in one hand and brushed his unruly brown hair out of his eyes with the other. His friends backed up clearing a space round him and Akane, all eyes looking to Akane girl expectantly. More passers by quickly added to the growing crowd of spectators.

Akane swallowed hard. How could this be happening? Was lunch a good reason to fight? More importantly, was she a Pokemon trainer or not? "Right, Twinkers! Let's go!!" Akane definitely looked more confident than she felt, though in all honesty that wasn't a hard thing to achieve. She pointed at her opponent as Twinkers stepped in front, a look of determination on her little pink face. "Let's show him what we've got."

"This will be too easy" the youth smirked. "Go Ratatta!" The angry teen held out one of the Pokeballs and in a red flash a small purple rat Pokemon burst forth from the device. It landed ready for battle snarling viciously, a single gold earring in its right ear matched the one in its trainers right ear. "Let's take her lunch money."

Twinkers was about twice the size of the rat Pokemon, though the Ratatta made up for size with attitude. This was definitely going to be a tough fight, and the trainer still had a Pokemon in reserve. That gutsy Ratatta needed to calm down for Twinkers to stand a chance ... that was it. "Twinkers, show that rat some charm!" ordered Akane, the young girl focusing so hard on the purple rat that she started to forget that there was a crowd watching.

"Ratatta! Bite!" barked the boy, and the order was obeyed with blinding speed. The purple Pokemon was a blur as it leaped forward teeth first landing a solid blow. Twinkers stood firm against the assault, and retained her focus enough to launch her counter attack. Akane could all but see the hearts in the Ratatta's eyes as it bounded back in front of its trainer, and Twinkers smiling face and suggestive wink was enough to get the rat Pokemon to forget its anger and sigh a dreamy sigh.

Jett waited. And waited. River was gone. He frowned, wondering if she had teleported into another plane of existance.

That would certainly be a breakthrough in training.

"Fly?" Aerosmith wondered aloud, drifting along the area. "Beautifly?" He neared the trees, searching for a trace of white or green or red... "Beautifly!"

"River!" Jett called, looking around. "River, where are you?" If she got lost, she'd be terrified and lonely and... Jett couldn't bear to finish the thought, some parental instinct overwhelming him as he stood up. "River!?"

A rustling came from below Aerosmith.

"Beautifly!" Aerosmith cried, unleashing an instinctive gust upon whatever emerged. River offered him a grin before she disappeared as the attack hit dead-on.

"..."

"...Fly?"

"W-wait! That was--"

Jett's thought was interrupted by the blur of white springing from the trees, River offering yet another grin to her opponent for the match.

"Beautifly!" Aerosmith growled, tackling River, who merely disappeared once more. Aerosmith, however, continued upwards, knowing what would happen next.

He was utterly wrong.

A Confusion blasted the Butterfly Pokemon as he ascended, before the actual River leapt from the trees, clinging right to the Bug-type.

The two instantly fell with their combined weight added onto Aerosmith's utter surprise and confusion and River's planned momentum.

They landed with a dull thud, and Jett watched eagerly to see who would emerge victorious. Finally, River stood, catching her breath as she offered her small audience a smile.

"Nice work, River!" Jett grinned, running over to pat the Feeling Pokemon on the head. "You were great, too, Aerosmith." The Beautifly in question was on the ground, nearly unconscious, but he still offered the others a fatigued "Fly..."

"Watch out, Roxanne," Jett grinned, looking to the city in the distance. "We're coming for you."

Finally, the day was here that Mahnaz was going to start her own adventure and maybe run in Mirrikh along the way. She stepped out of her house and stretched in the sun as Maipe ran out and howled to the sun.
"Maipe, behave boy," she said with a chuckle. Her mother didn't bother to come outside; she knew that was going to happen.
"Lithe?" Maipe looked up as his partner with a confused look.
"Onto Pewter, I guess. That's the first gym in Kanto." Mahnaz sighed; she was so much older than most people starting their journeys. She walked around the city one last time, then started walking towards where she met Maipe. "And onwards we go."

Once they'd started walking again, Jake had considered using his PokeDex to check out Turtwig's entry, but before he could even think about taking the PokeDex out of his pocket again, some sort of strange screeching sound was coming from behind him. Both he and a startled Turtwig turned back to see what the cause of the noise was, and they both could only stare in awe and confusion as a Bidoof had suddenly come charging out of the bushes, its beady little eyes gleaming with rage. "Is that a... Bidoof?" Jake asked, squinting to try and get a better look at it. Its mouth was wide open and it was shrieking horribly, and it was moving fast - no, unbelievably fast, and was headed right towards them. "It is a Bidoof," Jake said, now walking backwards with the sudden realization that it was not only charging at them, but it looked angry, too, which definitely was throwing Jake off-guard, especially since the first two Bidoof he'd encountered had only managed simple, almost lethargic expressions.

Turtwig merely took a step back and watched with bewilderment as a blur of brown fur sped by him, apparently more interested in going after Jake than him. "Tur... twig?" the Grass-type inquired softly, for he'd never seen anything like it before. There were plenty of mild-mannered Bidoof living back at Professor Rowan's laboratory, many of whom he was good friends with. He didn't know what Jake could have possibly done to piss this particular Pokemon off so badly, but he figured he'd better go and help. The Bidoof's vicious snarls and Jake's terrified shouts were easy enough to follow, so the Tiny Leaf Pokemon sighed and shook his head as he trotted along after them. His life had been so quiet and uneventful before meeting Jake; just what had he gotten himself into?

"What is your problem?!" Jake shouted, now flat-out sprinting to try and get away from the very angry beaver, though it was easily gaining on him. The PokeDex hadn't lied - it certainly was capable of moving faster than one would suspect. He looked over his shoulder, certain he could see whitish light trailing out from behind the enraged Bidoof. Wait, is it using Quick Attack? he thought, remembering how the white light had trailed behind Peaches the Pachirisu when she had used Quick Attack. He ran faster and tried to remember what moves the PokeDex said that Bidoof could use. He remembered Tackle and Growl, but definitely not Quick Attack. He looked over his shoulder again, though this proved to be a bad idea as he should have been watching where he was going instead of looking back at the Bidoof, as he happened to trod upon a loose rock on the ground, and just like that he was falling forward, yet again.

“So, we’re gonna battle the first people we see in this place, alright?”

“Quil!”

Scarlet dramatically threw back the massive wooden doors that had majestically well oiled hinges. … That was way easier than I thought. Apparently, the monks really took care of that place. The trainer strolled into the wide, wooden shrine, his pokemon at his heels. “Wow. Bellsprout statues?”

Cindy blinked up at the twin bronze statues. Weird pokemon to dedicate a shrine thingy to.

“Of course. What did you expect from something called ‘Sprout Tower?’ After all, as legend has it, a 100-foot tall bellsprout became the center column you see wobbling before you.” A mysterious voice sounded off from behind the pillar.

“That’s silly,” Scarlet started with a frown. “It would have to use so many growths…” As the cherrygrove trainer pondered how a pokemon could go its whole life using one move over and over again, and then how horribly powerful that pokemon’s grass type special attacks would be, a tiny little kid wandered out from behind that pillar.

And then came that magical moment. School Kid Damien and Pokemon Trainer Scarlet made eye contact. That unwritten rule instantly came into effect. Damien’s hand shot into his pocket, from which he retrieved a single pokeball. And with a flick of his wrist, that pokeball barreled through the air, cracking down on the ground.

Scarlet shot his index finger toward Damien, and Cindy responded by dashing forth into battle. At that time, Damien’s pokeball burst open, a crimson light springing out and taking the shape of a kitty. A bipedal kitty with a giant coin in its head.

And for a moment the combatants trainers stood, staring at each other. Damien awkwardly adjusted his glasses. “Um… So we’re battling, right?”

“That was the impression I was under, yeah.” Scarlet just as awkwardly rubbed the back of his head.

“Okay. Cool.”

Mia shrugged as the Geodude hid behind the rocks. It was a pretty smart move, though cowardly if Mia could give her truthful opinion about Roark's strategy. They'd have to give their spot away eventually with some sort of attack, there wasn't much they could do at this point. "Weeeeeeeelp, let's just knock some rocks down Jello," the young girl instructed with another shrug. Boy, this gym battle wasn't exciting and rousing like her father's.

Jello nodded, using her Vine Whip to cast several rocks onto the ground. She effectively knocked quite a decent amount of them down to the floor, reducing the possible spaces that Roark's Geodude could hide. "Keep going Jello!" Mia instructed, maybe they'd get lucky and hit that stupid Geodude.

Gardenia inspected the challenger's new Pokemon. Again, it seemed to be a rare and powerful Pokemon. She had to give credit to this trainer! She could work wonders even with a Flying type. I mean, c'mon, Grass types naturally were created to shine brilliantly and grow up to be big and strong. But the fact that this girl had trained such a common bird Pokemon so well, well, it was impressive.

The Grass Gym Leader smirked as she waited for that speedy little Staravia to come closer and closer. Turtwig's father had passed down an attack to his son that he had gotten from his own father. Needless to say Gardenia had many Torterra and Grotle and Turtwigs. She even gave some of her babies to Professor Rowan to hand out to new trainers. She just LOVED them. LOVED.

The girl continued to wait, calculating the timing right down to the second. The whole thing went by quickly and immediately Gardenia shouted, "Turtwig! Body Slam!"

Turtwig took the Quick Attack head on, bracing himself for the damage before launch his own body forward trying to throw his weight onto the bird who was now conveniently close to the ground.

Now there's something you don't see every day, Keegan thought, raising an eyebrow as he watched Mike rolling around on the ground with the Magmar in celebration of their win over Kilik and his Electabuzz. He wasn't sure exactly, but should sustained direct contact with Napalm be resulting in severe and painful burns? Nah, he decided not to question it. Some things he felt he was definitely better off not knowing. He enjoyed another long and satisfying drag of his cigarette, making a mental note to stop at a store sometime soon and pick up some more, as he was certain he was gonna need them, even more so as he looked back at Mike as he'd suddenly gotten to his feet once more, a somewhat serious look on his face. Keegan peered past his old friend to see what had become of Napalm, smirking a bit when he saw the Magmar sprawled out on the floor, undoubtedly in need of a bit of relaxation after his bout with Cable. Yeah, I have got to get me one of those, the redhead thought, flicking a bit of ash to the floor. Mike may have been completely off his rocker, but at least he had good taste in Pokemon.

He wasn't really all that surprised to hear what Mike had to say next, as he had been well aware of the sombre anniversary that had slowly been creeping up on them. Had it really been three years already? He closed his eyes, still able to feel the sweltering heat caused by the drastic spikes in temperature, highly abnormal even for a place such as Lavaridge, though those upward surges on the thermometer were surpassed on the weirdness scale only by the very sudden and very random deluges of rain that would pour down from the skies; the thick dark clouds seemingly have come from nowhere. Those torrential rains had caused massive mudslides, and had it not been for the quick actions of many of the Lavaridge inhabitants and their Pokemon combined, their entire town could have been washed away in a cascade of mud, rock, water, and other debris. Sometimes he still had nightmares about it, waking up during the middle of the night, covered in a cold sweat, heart racing. It wasn't hard to imagine himself still stuck back in that disaster, as at the time, it had felt as though it would never end.

Keegan shivered despite the fact that he was standing inside a volcano, and he had another lengthy drag of his smoke before opening his eyes once more, though he was startled to see that Mike's wide, excited green eyes were fixed on his. He's gonna murder us all in our sleep, he thought for a paranoid second, until he heard his old friend's request, and he grinned wolfishly. Now it all made sense, why he wanted everyone here, even him. Given their history, their past friendship and everything they'd been through over the years, him missing out on this now would be ludicrous. He wasn't surprised to hear Kilik, Mitsu, and then Kasiya all agree to help, though the blonde's ungraceful reentrance to the arena made him wince a little. He looked back to Mike as he tossed the finished butt of his cigarette to the ground and crushed it with his heel, his expression resolute. "I guess I'm in too," he said finally. "Can't wait to see the look on that b*****d's face when we come storming in," he added, crossing his arms over his chest. "Though I'd better get to smack him around a bit." He also remembered well the day he'd been approached by Maxie, and Keegan could still clearly see the look on the Magma Boss' face when he'd told him to get stuffed (or rather, something a lot less polite than what could be written here). He looked back at Mike again, a little more serious than before. "I don't know exactly how how I can help, but I'll do what I can."

"Paloooo!" Sparkle let out a loud cheer, eagerly returning Sam's hug as though she'd known the girl all her life. She felt energetic and even powerful, and she knew that she would be much more capable of protecting her trainer now. The bulb on her tail flashed brightly a few times as she turned to a still very stunned-looking Miharu, trying not to giggle as many strands of the girl's green hair were standing on end. The Ampharos cooed and wrapped her arms around her trainer, a little amused that they were nearly the same height, for Miharu was just under five feet exactly.

Finally, Miharu blinked and smiled, hugging her newly-evolved Pokemon tightly. "Sparkle, you look so cool," she said, though her voice was a bit muffled due to the Pokemon tightly hugging her back. She loosened her grip on the electric type, unable to wipe the grin from her face. First, she'd evolved her Staryu with her Water Stone, a few days ago, and now Aska, Lily and Sparkle had all evolved as well. She felt both excited and a little sick to her stomach at the thought of all these sudden changes. It hadn't yet occurred to her just how much more formidable her Pokemon team had just gotten, and she looked over at Sam. "Thank you, my Pokemon are all suddenly evolving on me. I'm not sure how I feel about that," she added, now smoothing her frizzled hair. She realized that it probably seemed like a silly thing to say, but she really couldn't help it. Her little Pokemon weren't so little anymore.
