Lin laughed at that, "That's true, though it's a wonderful incentive to get Miyuki to write."

That was how she had convinced Miyuki that writing was a good thing by writing letters to people she wanted to write letters to.

Earendil grinned as he opened the door that led belowdeck. "Her letters are so sweet. Though it would be more logical for her to keep a journal than write letters, I would imagine."

The corridor was narrow, and he let Lin walk in front of him, since there was no longer space for them to walk side by side.

"It is, and I have started her on that, but..." Lin murmured with a sheepish sort of smile, though it was hard to see since she was in front of him, "It's harder to justify it. She needs a reason to do all those sorts of practices. I'm just grateful the logic of, the more she knows the more she can do is still working at this age. I mean, I was kind of the same way."

There had been, when she was a child, a method to her madness. Lin had the goal of traveling to travel you needed to be intelligent and strong. Education for her had reason, whether it was so that she could defend herself while traveling or because she had to complete her schooling otherwise no one would let her travel or the fact she wanted to know what in the hell everyone else was saying.

"Have you tried pointing out to her that it would be a way for her to remember everything that happens to her in the future, when she might otherwise forget?" Earendil asked Lin, though he was sure she would have thought about it. "The threat of forgetting all the amazing experiences she's had ... like the crystal cavern last week ... how would anyone ever want to forget something like that?"

"Yes," Lin laughed, "Journal writing is easy, but I've been using letter writing to get her to practice composing in other languages. Learning how to write is easy, learning how to compose on the other hand is much harder."

And Miyuki had a lot of languages to practice, Lin forgot now how she managed it. Granted she wasn't perfect in Chinese but no one could be. The amount of characters to memorize was so daunting that not even a full grown adult could remember all of them clearly.

Unless they were one of the neko trio.

"At least she doesn't have to learn how to write in the Ancient Tongue," Earendil laughed, "since they don't have their own writing system, she can just use any of the others!"

He grinned at her in the darkness as they headed down the stairs to the next deck. "You should try getting her to write her journals in other languages. It would be good practice. Kaito does it. I don't mean different languages jumbled together like his, though," he added. "That wouldn't help her at all, I don't think."

"I use to do that with my math notes," Lin murmured, "And my other notes... I don't know why Kaito tends to jumble the letters together but I could see if Miyuki would write in her journal a different language for each entry...."

There was a thought, but it would mean more entries for her to keep up and Lin wasn't sure what Miyuki was going to write while she was one the ship.

"I don't think it's the letters Kaito jumbles," Earendil mused, "I think it's just he'll write different paragraphs in different languages, is all."

Not that it mattered, he supposed.

At the bottom of the stairs was the room that was normally Earendil's, but which for the next several months would belong to all three of them.

"And here we are," he smiled, motioning for Lin to lead the way in.

Stepping in, Lin already saw Miyuki looking at the bunks with interest. The little girl was stepping side to side trying to decide which one she wanted. In truth, Miyuki had never slept by herself before so she wasn't so sure.

"Have you chosen a bunk?" Lin asked.

Miyuki looked up and shook her head.

Earendil headed over to the bunk that he had always used - the one on the inside wall, just beside the door.

"I'll take this one," he told the others. "Closest to the door, so that way you two will have more privacy and less noise from people walking past."

The other two bunks were side by side on the outside wall, with the porthole between them. The one on the right was across from Earendil's bunk, the one on the left had an open space in front of it.

"Okay," Lin nodded at this, "So Miyuki which of the two bunks do you want?"

Miyuki looked at one bunk and then the other making a slow and methodical choice.

"That one!" she pointed to the one with space.

Earendil smiled. "Good. Then we should put our things away before we go up for something to eat."

He nodded at the storage space under the bunks. "Make sure to latch them when you're finished. Sometimes, the rocking of the ship will make it all fall out if you don't."

If their other room had been like this, he wouldn't be telling them any of this, but Lin's other room, the storage was completely different, and far more efficient.

Lin looked under the bunks she hadn't noticed those before and hadn't had to use them previously. Slowly she began to unpack, putting things away and latching them of course afterward.

After she was done with her things she moved to help Miyuki. Miyuki was trying to decide where to put her doll.

It didn't take Earendil long to put his things away - he knew beforehand where they would be going, so he didn't have to think about it - and when he was finished, he turned to help Lin and Miyuki. Though it seemed that Lin had already finished as well.

"Need a hand?" he asked Miyuki, heading over to her and Lin.

Miyuki held up her doll, "I don't know where to put him."

She didn't want to put him into the storage but if she didn't put him somewhere safe he might get knocked around and she knew this too.
