Milton excused himself, asking if he could have some private time with Diego. He'd also like to borrow Ulani momentarily, would that be alright? M.A. nodded, of course she didn't mind, after all the artist was so kindly extending his hospitality while M.A. had no way of descending the mountain.

So Diego and Milton re-entered the house with Ulani perched happily upon the artists' head. She couldn't understand what about this guy made Daemyn bristle so; well, the canine was always a little wiener when it came to strangers, but Mr. Milton was really nice; he had given her crackers earlier, and had even chuckled and patted her head when she perched on his head! As far as Ulani was concerned, she was sold.

The trio was quiet for a while as Milton and Diego walked. Milton broke the silence with his soft, breathy voice. "Do you remember that incident three years back?"

Diego nodded. How could he forget; the memories came back to him in dreams. He remembered waking up one night in a hot sweat, M.A. asking what was wrong; he had shook his head then, as if he had forgotten what he had been dreaming about, but of course he had not. It had been the duo standing upon that fateful cliff, the artists' wild brush strokes underneath a sheltering overpass, trying to capture the tragedy that was occurring before their eyes, Milton's attempt to interfere with the tragedy, to save the child 500 feet below them in the furious sea, Diego's refusal to let himself be a fool, Diego's insistence that he remain impartial, as an artist, as a professional. Milton's tears, blurred in the storm.

Milton stopped at an obscure corner of the house. There was the painting -- a little water damaged, but more or less intact. "When the storm occurred last year, I rolled this one into plastic brush container, because I couldn't lose it. I still consider it my greatest masterpiece." It truly was. Through the fire, the torrent of rain, the misery of man was there. And in the corner of the painting was a mere splotch of black, that child. Diego looked up at Milton; he had seen this painting a thousand times by now. What was the purpose of his showing him?

Ulani was still perched on top of Milton's head, but she had fallen asleep. Milton removed her from her perch. "My hair must have quite a bit of chemicals in it, from the paint... She'll wake up soon, with some fresh air," he added, noting Diego's worry. "But Diego, don't you remember what you told me? To not get personally involved with my craft... Aren't you doing this now?" he asked nonchalantly, turning the bird around in his hands. His thin hands reached around, finding the bird's beak with his fingers. And began to smother the sleeping bird with a surprisingly strong hand. Ulani unconsciously groaned, muffled.

Diego, alarmed, grabbed his master's arm, his typically sleepy eyes wide open for once.

Milton laughed, an odd, metallic sound. "That was a nice expression, Diego. Shame I've already captured horror on paper. Relax. I was kidding, kidding," he said, releasing the still-sleeping bird. Ulani gave a deep sigh, but continued to doze. Milton put the bird gently down on the couch. "In any case, I suppose I can't judge you for getting too involved... I have, too," Milton sighed, sadly. "It's hard to capture emotion at a distance. I'm no Buddha. I cannot sit content with watching beauty without wanting it for myself, wanting to possess it. You and I are the same. You alone understand me, isn't that right, Diego? You've always understood me, my foolish passions. You and I are bound together, 'till sweet repose... Is that not why you have come back for me, this useless, tainted me?"

Milton reached for a key in his pocket and approached the door that had been locked before. Diego, frightened and unsure of what was going on, followed his old master into the door. At first, it was pitch black; it was a windowless room. And then Milton lit a candle, and typically silent Diego found a new level of speechlessness.

Mitsu stepped closer to Keegan on instinct as Mike writhed and flopped all over the floor in what could only be described as uncontainable excitement with a hint of insanity. It scared her a bit, the laugh, his uncontrollable movements, everything. And she felt scared for Kilik when Mike seized him by the collar. He was just so. . .unpredictable now. And different, so very different. Mitsu slowed down her thoughts, remembering that somewhere within him was that boy she once knew and loved. He still existed, but he was just hidden, that was all.

She continued to watch wordlessly as Mike continued to hug and snuggle up against his Magmar. Any normal person would have been burned severely, but Mike was anything but normal. How he managed to withstand the fires, however, was beyond Mitsu's comprehension. But if anyone knew, then it was her, that while it was strange it wasn't impossible. Something must have happened between the time of the Slateport catastrophe and now. The girl shook her head slightly, she would ask him later if she worked up enough courage to talk to him.

"So, what is your answer guys? Will you help me correct my mistakes, or will you back down?"

"You can count on me," she replied first without a thought, only to realize what had just come out of her mouth. Both of her hands swiftly went to cover her mouth, looking shocked at her immediate response. Of course she wanted to help and be there for Mike. . . but how much help could she really be? She looked over at Mike, Kilik, Kasiya . . . they were all so much stronger than she was. Her eyes found their way to the floor as her hands dropped back to her side. It was silent for a few moments as Mitsu mentally fought back her thoughts and doubts. After a pause Mitsu shook her head, laughing. Her laughter was rough and almost reckless. "What the hell," she smiled looking up at Mike, something was different, her eyes sparkled with determination, "I'm in."

Needless to say, that Stun Spore was unavoidable. Turtwig shook as he felt the spores start of seize up his muscles. What would his dad think about this! He was going to fight this stupid sickness with his all, he wouldn't let small set back stop him from winning another round! He pulled his leg foot back, digging it into the dirt several times showing both Gardenia and Katie that he was raring and ready to go.

"The challenger's Roselia is unable to battle. Leader Gardenia's Turtwig is the victor!" Suki the referee stated with a matter-of-fact tone. She raised the white flag on Katie's side to signify that her Pokemon had fainted.

"I've gotta admit," Gardenia said, "that was a pretty smart move! And you Roselia is just beyond amaaaaaazing!" The Grass Gym Leader could just not get enough of the Grass types, she truly loved them to the point of obsession. "I'm sure it'll grow into a lovely Pokemon!"

---------=========-----------

Mia checked her watch, nope, it was 6:45 AM. "It's not early at all! A Gym Leader should be up and ready to go in the morning!" Mia replied, again speaking loudly. It was something she'd picked up from her father. They both raised their voice when they spoke of something passionately. She shook her head as Roark went to go change.

Sheesh, what a sloppy Gym Leader, showing up in pajamas. Mia, though seemingly judgmental, had grown up with a Gym Leader as a father. He woke up early everyday and had his Gym doors opened at 5AM at the latest. Her father always ran a strict code of conduct when it came to his gym. Growing up in such an environment had trainer Mia to believe that all Gym leaders would be the same, or at least should be.

"The name's Miyamaru Wake!" she replied, happily, confidence glimmering in her eyes. Let's get it on! She was going to get this badge and be one step closer to going home!

Wake? Was she related to that insane water gym leader? Urg, no wonder she was here so early. Eying her a bit closer Roark noticed the similarities between the two, though it mostly had to do with the clothes. She probably had a lot of water pokemon to, just great. "Your that crazy gym leaders daughter aren't you?" Well she wasn't the only one with a gym leader as a father, although sometimes his dad drove him a little nuts, at least he wasn't Crusher Wake. "Well as one gym leaders kid to another I accept your challenge."

Grabbing his pokeballs and his shovel, Roark swung the later over his shoulder and grinned at Mia. "I hope your ready, though seeing how insanely early you are up I will assume you are." Heading over to the edge of his rocky arena Roark stopped in the trainers box before swinging his shovel down and slamming it into the dirt. "This will be a one on one match, three pokemon are allowed to each of us. Does that sound good to you miss Wake people who have two jobs up super early in the morning?" Ok so the Wake-Awake pun was pretty bad but it was early so he wasn't really to blame for his terrible choice in humor.

Kilik cringed when Mike got so in his face that he could practically see the fire burning in the boy's eyes. Though in his overreacted excitement, Kilik did agree that it was quite possibly the best battle that he'd had in his life. He looked over at Blaine and nodded. Yet as he was about to leave, Mike began to completely explain what his plans were. Had it already been three years? He was much younger, and much less mature, when it had happened. All he knew was there was an odd amount of rain for Verdanturf, and before he knew it, his mother was crying in front of the television. It almost made his blood boil just at the thought of the tragedy - to think that one of his closest friends had almost ended Hoenn's existence.

But he couldn't be mad. And Mike was going to redeem himself, and Kilik smiled. He's more of a man than me, he thought with a quiet sigh. Perhaps one day...this group will help bring down Team Rocket! Kilik looked over at Mitsu when she spoke up, and raised an eyebrow. She was getting herself into something dangerous, but she was stronger than she let herself believe. He nodded.

"You bet, Mike!" Kilik gave his friend a smirk and a thumbs up. There was no sense in disagreeing. When this group got together, it was hero time! "Though, I can't say I'd be much help in my current state," he said, scratching the back of his head. "I don't think a rag-tag team of low-level Pokemon like Treecko, Chimchar, and Drifloon will be much assistance."

"I'll be back momentarily, gang," Kilik said, waving to the rest. He assumed that they'd all agree to go along with Mike's plan. After all, why wouldn't they? The boy disappeared through the door leading towards the lab.

When he arrived in the lab, he let out a low whistle. It was all very impressive. Kilik flipped a light switch and the fluorescent lights above him began to hum as they grew brighter. Kilik placed Cable's Pokeball on the machine that Blaine had mentioned and pressed a few buttons to turn it on. He'd never used a machine like this before, but how hard could it be? Technology wasn't a foreign subject, and it was easy enough to figure out. As Cable healed up, the boy put his hands on his hips and looked around the room. There had to be a transfer PC, like the Pokemon Centers had, somewhere. He walked along the wall, and noticed a computer in the corner, next to a large and bulky transfer machine.

"Wow," he laughed, "Looks pretty old but..." he turned the computer on and it seemed to groan as it booted up. It took a bit longer than most computers to finally start, but when he logged in, it worked just as well as the others. "If Mike wants to tackle the entire Team Magma base, I'm going to have to be as strong as I possibly can be!" He loomed over the keyboard and with a few more keystrokes, he had filed his Pokemon from highest level to the lowest. He straightened up and raised an eyebrow.

"Oh, how strange," he said simply, "I had no idea that Bahamut had grown so high. I mean, Flareon and the gang aren't too far behind..." he put Chimchar, Treecko, and Drifloon's Pokeballs on the transfer pad and they disappeared after Kilik entered his ID number to authorize the change. Their icons appeared in his box, bouncing up and down like the others. "Aaaalright," he said, clicking his tongue, "Flareooon, Weeeezing..." he double clicked and their Pokeballs showed up in front of him. The boy snatched them up and held them in his hands. A wave of nostalgia hit him like a ton of bricks. These were his first two Pokemon...He couldn't believe they'd become so powerful. It certainly felt like an eternity since he'd used the pair, but he needed their power. Hopefully he wasn't too rusty when it came to using them.

In the corner of the room, he heard a ping to signal that Cable had been all healed up and was back to 100%. He double-clicked Scizor and Bahamut next, their spheres showing up on the transfer table as well. He let out a low whistle. Scizor's Park Ball was almost thrashing - she really needed to get out. "Don't worry," he said to the ball, "You'll get plenty of battling out when we get to the Magma Base." The ball settled down at these words and Kilik clipped the sphere to his belt, along with Bahamut. Now that he had his strongest Pokemon with him, Kilik felt like he could tackle any challenge!

He shut down the PC and headed out the door, shutting off the healing machine after taking Cable's Pokeball. "Hey Flareon!" he said, "Come on out!" He tossed the ball up into the air, and his old companion showed up in front of him, shaking a bit. Flareon stretched and wiggled his tail. Then he looked up at Kilik and squealed happily, jumping into his trainer's arms.

"Flaaaar!" he cooed, bumping his forehead against Kilik's chin. His trainer looked so much more mature! He climbed all over his master until he got on his shoulder, wrapping his large poofy tail around his trainer like a scarf.
Kilik let out a soft sigh. He missed Flareon a ton. And perhaps Weezing would like to see everyone...though it was so hot in the arena that he wasn't sure if the Poison-derp could handle it. Ah, well, he'd give it a shot. He let Weezing's Pokeball fly, and Weezing hovered about lazily, taking a deep breath when he saw Kilik. His cheeks puffed out and his face began to flush red. His body began to glow white and a loud ringing sound began to fill Kilik's ears.

"AHH!" he screamed, "Whoa whoa! Weezing! There's no need to blow up! We're not going to blow up right now, okay? Explosion, is a no no!" The Poison-type kept glowing and exploded...out of his pores. A loud, gassy fart practically burst out of the Weezing, filling the room with a green haze. Kilik placed his hand over his mouth and ran out of the room with Weezing, closing the door tight behind him. He took a deep breath. "Yeesh. Normally, I would've been able to handle that, but...What has mom been feeding you!?" he coughed a bit and started to walk back into the arena, where everyone else was, Flareon on his shoulder where he belonged and Weezing hovering behind him, with a trail of heart shaped smoke puffing out of the Pokemon every couple of feet.

He walked back to where he had been standing when he agreed to go with Mike's plan, and put his hands in his pockets, saying nothing. Perhaps he wasn't gone as long as he thought he was. He looked over at Flareon, who smiled.Weezing let out another, yet very high pitched pooooooot. "WEE WEE WEE!!" he laughed afterward.

Placing her finger to her temple and tilting her head slight downwards while looking up with her blue eyes, Mia smirked, "Bingo! You betcha." She didn't really take offense to his comment about her father being crazy, because well, he pretty much was. Sometimes anyways, other times she wouldn't call him crazy but just really, really, really passionate. And when it came to his Gym Leader duties, you could bet that he was very passionate.

"Sounds fine to me," Mia replied, though he'd left out the rules about items and switching. How thoughtless! But oh well, this was still a battle she would win regardless, especially after training two of her Pokemon especially for this match. Scuttles wasn't a very good match up for a Rock type Gym, but Mia was confident enough in Jello and Rhyme. They could easily pull through a victory with the two of them alone. Though she had to admit it was also odd that he hadn't sent out a Pokemon. She was so use to the Gym Leader sending out their Pokemon first. Mia mentally shook her head, she'd have to get rid of these silly preconceptions about others if she was to "grow" and "reach her potential" as her father had instructed her to do as he kicked her out of not only their home but their town as well.

"Well, I guess I'll start with Jello!" Mia smiled, throwing up the Safari Ball. In a flash of red light materialized a tangle of overgrown vines, two red shoes, and two big, white eyes poking out through the center of the mass of blue-green vines. "Tangla!" she shouted, excited for her first battle. She turned to Mia as if to say, "Wow! This is my first Gym battle! By the way did you know that there are three Rock type Gym Leaders as the first in their league? All the regions have one but Jhoto!"

Mia laughed. Her Tangela knew so many things she didn't, presumably from living a life in the swamp where so many trainers from all over decided to come to catch Pokemon. She turned her attention back to Roark. Well, she was ready! Her debut as a trainer, here we go!

Roark took one look at the Tangela and groaned, yeah this was going to suck. Inwardly he cursed the fact that he had to use his lower leveled pokemon on trainers who over leveled their pokemon to steamroll over the lower level gyms. Still rules were rules and he would follow them. "Yeah all right a Tangela. Geodude your up!" Roark just hoped his pokemon didn't get to mad at him for sending them out just to get hurt like this.

In a flash the small Geodude appeared on the battlefield. The unusually pretty smart rock pokemon took one look and groaned, it was one of these battles. Sending a glare back at his trainer he couldn't do anything but sigh as Roark gave him an apologetic shrug. He was a tough pokemon and could put up fights with the best of them but sometimes it just wasn't very fair.

"Geodude let's start this off with your Defense Curl!" Roark ordered his somewhat sleepy manor from before disappearing and his inner gym leader was shining through now. Defense Curl was really their only way of surviving even one of that Tangela's attacks.

Out in the battlefield Roark's Geodude stopped his little complaints when he heard the authority come back into his trainers voice. Not wanting to disappoint him Geodude curled up into a ball as a green glow came over him as his defense was raised.

After Demi had landed a fairly heavy Ice Punch, this time Roy asked for a time-out so that he could Fully Restore his Grotle, who was rather unhappily frozen and surprisingly hurting from this first-timer.

"Now, let's try your Jynx on the defensive. Grotle, Mega Drain!" he commanded firmly, and the Grove Pokemon immediately complied by coughing up a nest of vines that launched into the air. Now, that would NOT be good for her hair! Demi thought, bristling a bit. A woman's livelihood was her hair, and this thing was gonna fuss it all up! Pouting, Jynx willed with all her heart that it would just, you know, go away, and suddenly a purple aura surrounded the mass, throwing it off.

"Oh! She knows Psychic!" Roy exclaimed. "That's impressive. You can use that directly on the opponent." Grotle, disgrunted that his attack didn't work the second time, took advantage of Demi's little smug self-contentment and sent another wave of Mega Drain that she was a little less prepared for. Demi managed it so that it landed on her shoulders and body, somehow, however, more attentive to her hair than her health. But it didn't hurt that bad... It was a little draining, but nothing she couldn't bear.

"A lot of Grass Pokemon have this kind of leech-like move, where they'll suck your Pokemon's health and regain it," Roy explained, pointing to his Grotle to have Jun see that it was glowing with health.

"Ah, okay. Then..." Jun thought for a moment. Since Demi wasn't close to the Grotle, rushing in would leave her open. What other attacks could she use? Mean Look sounds entirely useless, it isn't like anyone is running from the battle... Lovely Kiss? What's this? "With a scary face, the user tries to force a kiss on the foe. If it succeeds, the target falls asleep." Bahahaha I don't know if this will work, but dear goodness, I'd love to see Demi's scary face, and her seducing that bush thing!

"Lovely Kiss!" Jun commanded.

Demi turned to glare at Jun, and goddamn, if he had never seen anything more frightening in his life. 'That thing?!' she seemed to say, gesticulating. Jun, frozen beneath Demi's arresting, entirely intimidating stare, nodded slightly with a huge forced grin as sweat broke out on his smooth, perfect skin.

Her hair flying like Medusa and her presence so furious that she seemed to stand ten feet tall rather than just four feet, Demi advanced on the Pokemon, all fire and bells, before suddenly turning sweet and (hesitantly) giving him a smooch on his forehead.

Smitten Grotle, as if reassured to bed by his own mother, fell asleep after having been relaxed by Demi's kiss.

"Well, see, that wasn't /that/ bad, was it?" Jun asked cheerfully.

Demi used that DoubleSlap she hadn't been able to before, albeit lightly, since Jun wasn't a Pokemon. But Jun, with his martial arts background, was less hurt than reprimanded. "Okay, okay, we'll choose who you kiss more carefully, darling," Jun sighed.

A cluster of grass approximately five feet off to Jake's left started shaking ominously and instinctively the boy froze up on the spot, almost too afraid to even breathe. The seconds ticked by slowly, each one seemingly an hour long and punctuated by the thundering of his heart against his ribcage. Finally he took a step forward, deciding that after all he'd been through, he wasn't going to let a wild Pokemon get the best of him. He'd been just about to yell some kind of loud profanity in order to try and scare the Pokemon away, but just then Turtwig poked his head out of the tall grass, looking up at his trainer as though he were completely out of his mind. "Twiiig?" he asked, the two leaves on his head twitching intently. If one could translate what the Tiny Leaf Pokemon had just said, it would have been along the lines of 'What are you on, kid?'

"There you are," Jake muttered, his arms dropping to his sides in relief. "Okay, you're gonna have to stop running off on me like that," he said, doing his best to be stern. Turtwig's face quickly twisted into a heartbreaking pout, his leaves drooping just to add to the effect. Jake sighed and knelt down, and Turtwig came over to him and let his chin rest on the boy's knee. "I mean it, Buddy. You're all I got in this world right now, so I need you to stick by me." Turtwig gave a slight nod, suddenly feeling a bit guilty. He hadn't meant to get so far ahead, but this grass was just so tall, and he was just so, well, little. "Let's keep going," Jake said, standing up. "We wouldn't want to disappoint the professor, now would we?"

"Twig!" Turtwig cheered, trotting off ahead again (but not too far ahead), accenting each of his steps with a hearty "tur!" The duo hadn't gone very far when suddenly Jake found his feet falling out from under him, and he very unceremoniously face-planted the ground for a second time that day, not overly pleased with how familiar he was becoming with the solid ground. Turtwig had pivoted around quite swiftly to see what the commotion was about, and he tilted his head a little when he saw that it had been a Bidoof that his master had tripped over. It was looking a little shaken up as well, and its eyes opened wide when Turtwig ran up to it, apologizing profusely for his trainer's clumsiness (though Jake would never really know what was being said between the two). Jake had pulled himself up so that he was on his knees, and he looked over his shoulder at the two Pokemon, rubbing his possibly-bruised forehead as he wondered if this was possibly the same brown-bucktoothed-chubby-beaver-thing as before when he remembered the PokeDex that Professor Rowan had given him.

Mia knew the situation fairly well, the whole trainer-with-too-strong-a-Pokemon and whatnot. Many trainers came and fought her father with such Pokemon, but it was always a thrill to see how hard each trainer had worked to secure that badge. But Mia knew not to take such battles lightly either. Too much confidence could make a person's mind all hazy! Crasher Wake had crushed many a trainer with such Pokemon before through the sheer force and cunning that he fought with.

She herself, while unwillingly most of the time, still had trained her Pokemon very hard under the care of her father and his disciples. Though battling Gym Leaders and collecting Pokemon were the last thing she imagined she would be doing at the time. But, ah well, what could you do? Things were bound to still be interesting.

Oops, too much reminiscing and soliloquizing! It was time to battle! Seeing the Geodude use a Defense Curl gave Mia an idea. She was counting on Jello to take out two of Roark's Pokemon, leaving Rhyme fresh to take on that fearsome Cranidos of his. "Let's use Growth Jello!" Mia instructed. The boost of strength would give each of Jello's attacks a bit more of a punch.

Jello acknowledged the order by first hopping up and down and then glowing an luminescent green shade. She could feel herself getting stronger by the second.

Boss Macabre sat at his desk, strumming his fingers together. His team had not had any breakthroughs in their memory alteration research… it was beginning to be troublesome. If they didn’t get enhanced results soon, then they would be the next project to be cancelled. One of the boss’ three monitors lit up, indicating he had an incoming video message. He clicked the answer call button.

“Sir, we’ve compiled the reports on areas that are involved in memory research like you requested. I’ve sent the file to you just moments ago.” The grunt on the other side of the chat responded. “The most promising one seems to be along Route 9, in Kanto.”

“Thanks, you’re dismissed.” The boss said as he closed out the window. He glanced over to another monitor, which had a live stream of the training room. Just as he glanced, Kokoro was enveloped in light and evolved. The admin grinned, that Moti was an darn good trainer, even if he was a little too chipper for a shrewd organization like Team Rocket. But the promise of changing the world drew in all sorts of folks, it was really only the upper admins and some of the hard core scientists that were the amoral ones. The rank and file had all sorts of different motivations for joining up.

He pulled open the file and looked into the information. The Lashley Institute of Memory Studies, just west of Cerulean City along Route 9 had been publishing results of recent studies into long-term memory loss. Why make my own research when I can ‘borrow’ research done by someone else? We wouldn’t want to waste time proving the same thing twice now, would we? The man thought cynically. He reached for the button on his intercom.

“Moti.” Macabre spoke, waiting a moment as everyone in the training room halted to listen to the announcement. “Send Claire to the medical center for her usual treatment. You come to my office, we have an operation to discuss pertaining to our star agent there. Dismissed.” Macabre adjusted his glasses once more, yes they had quite a bit to discuss…

”Oy, well, I suppose we’ll call it quits on training for today.” Moti said with a shrug after he listened to the announcement. “You all can go back to your dorms,” Moti directed as he glanced to the other recruits that were training. “You two,” Moti added as he pointed to Claire and Kokoro, “Can follow Yang to the medical ward for your treatment.” With a wave the man took off for the exit on his way to meet with the boss. He’d been avoiding missions, but it seemed he had finally been stuck with one. Yang, you know what to do.

Righto! the Sun Pokemon thought-spoke back on their ‘secure connection.’ Please follow me Claire, Kokoro-ro! The Espeon added on her ‘broad channel’ as she began to head for the opposite exit of the training center.

Akane's return trip to Viridian City was much easier than the trek she had getting to Professor Oaks laboratory. Although it was scary at the time, asking for a ride back to Viridian with the driver that delivered the boxes of pokeballs to Oak turned out to be an excellent idea. He seemed like a nice person as he smiled back at the young trainer and agreed. Akane missed the knowing nod exchanged between the professor and driver. Twinkers, the newly evolved Clefairy, now sat on Akane's lap as she in turn sat quietly in the passenger seat of the white Silph Co. delivery truck as it sped along the road to Viridian City.

Clefairy.

It was still a little odd to think of Twinkers as a Clefairy now. She had been a Cleffa so long that it was hard to think of her as anything else. Memories of Twinkers welled up within her - seeing her for the first time, snuggling together in bed, playing games, and staring at the stars at Mount Moon. Then the thoughts shifted to the more recent past - running away on a grand adventure with a best friend, battling wild Pokemon, getting to Professor Oaks lab, the wonder of Twinkers evolving right in her arms ...

"Fairy?"

Twinkers brought her back to the present, a slightly worried look on her face. Akane smiled reassuringly at the pink Pokemon and Twinkers looked back at the road ahead with wonder and joy on its adorable face. That look was reminiscent of the look Twinkers had right before she evolved. She had just come up to Akane as she was researching the Pokemon she might want to catch and where to find them, struggling with a dirty golden looking Wobbuffet statue half as big Twinkers herself. The expectant look on the Pokemon's face become one of joy as Akane accepted the treasure Twinkers had found and gave her best friend a thank you hug. It was then that Twinkers evolved, remembering the sensation still made Akane's arms feel tingly. The arms that were now wrapped around her Clefairy's middle. Akane gave her a hug, making the fairy Pokemon give a content "Cle ..." as she did.

Growth, hmm, well he could deal with that. "Geodude use your Stealth Rock and hide in with the rocks." Roark watched as the Tangela start to glow as it used it's Growth, that was going to hurt if that hit. Since getting hit was part of the game here it was going to be time to do some guerrilla warfare hit and run tactics.

Out on the battlefield Roarks Geodude nodded and while the Tangela was still bringing up its power it tapped into the power that his trainers special move gave him. Not a lot of people used Stealth Rock like Roark did but then again not every trainer was anywhere near as good as his. Soon the arena was filled with a bunch of floating rocks that he could blend into easily. Not missing a moment Geodude flew into a small mass of rocks
before entering stealth mode. This was like when other pokemon used Double Team, only this time the other rocks were real.

Seeing his pokemon's good work with the Stealth Rock and camouflage Roark grinned. He was proud of his pokemon and all the hard work he put into them sure paid off. There was little chance of them knowing where exactly his Geodude was now. Of course he knew where his pokemon was not that he was going to be letting them know that. He wasn't a beginning trainer who looked at their hidden pokemon all the time.

"This is a one-on-one battle! No items will be used! The Pokemon themselves will decide their moves and if they decide to give up!"

Jett stood on the sidelines of the makeshift battlefield his team had formed. Of course, they were behind the same house that they really needed to visit some day, but now they had organized it somewhat. A series of small rocks lined the area, forming a nice rectangle.

Jett raised his make-shift flag (some leaves tied to a stick, thanks to Aerosmith's String Shot, thank you) and looked to the sky. The sun wasn't visible today, but there was a nice sheet of darkening clouds, which made everything considerably darker and edgier. It really added nicely to the drama of the battle. Jett could only hope it didn't start raining or anything.

"Begin!" He let the flag fall.

River, of course, had the first move, because she was a lady. The small Ralts offered her opponent a bright smile as she leapt into the air, initiating a Double Team. Several Rivers suddenly existed, all linking together to form a circle around the Beautifly. They all began to spin around, effectively disguising which River was real.

"Fly!" Aerosmith was not amused with such tactics. And, as he expected, the Rivers fell to the ground and fleed about. He felt like Godzilla, creating havoc upon a small population of white Psychics. Poison Sting came to mind, and so he began his barrage of lethal needles that descended upon the beings below like the wrath of God.

"Fly! Fly! Beautifly!"

Jett stared in mixed amusement and concern as he watched his Beautifly go around, shrieking and seemingly cackling as he took out the clones. Something told the boy that this was not healthy behavior, and he made a note to talk to the Beautifly sometime soon about his... unusual tendencies. They were going to add to their team soon, and Jett couldn't have their new Pokemon frightened away!

Elsewhere in the house, Mary-Anne was busy admiring Milton's works. Each work moved her to emotion; there was magnificence, there was danger, there was regret, loneliness, unadulterated joy... And no two works brought her to the same shade of feeling, they all were different somehow. Milton did not duplicate.

It soon came to M.A.'s attention that little Rebecca was watching them timidly from afar, her little eyes darting behind some wall or other obstacle whenever Mary-Anne looked her way. It seemed that she was looking at Daemyn, mostly, her deadened eyes registering something like curiosity. The whole time that Mary-Anne had been in the house, it seemed like Rebecca had evaded being in the same room with her as much as possible, forgiving a bit of business here and there. But she seemed quite awed by Daemyn, for one reason or another; well, she probably didn't see many Pokemon besides the forest Pokemon here, so Daemyn must've been something quite new for her.

After ten minutes of this not-so-discreet spying, M.A. sighed with a little smile. "You know, Daemyn, I'm glad you don't bite," she said, rather loudly.

Daemyn was about to growl and protest - Yes I do! - when Mary-Anne smothered his snout with lovingly forceful hands. "And you're sooooo smooth," she added, rubbing the back of his head to his shoulders to his back.

Well, that he could agree with.

"I'd be sad, if I never got to meet such a handsome, well-behaved and sweet specimen," M.A. added, smiling with a tinge of feigned sadness.

Rebecca couldn't take it anymore. She slipped out slowly. "Ummmmmm Uncle Milton was inquiring if.. umm... if you wanted to rest or something... Or if you needed something else..." she mumbled, a poor liar. After all, she was "but five," as Milton said earlier.

"No, I'm quite fine. It seems Daemyn here, on the other hand, would like some fresh company; he loves pretty little girls," M.A. said, leaning heavily on Daemyn's muzzle with her elbow as to keep him from refuting the lie that he adored children. He hated the whole lot of them, in truth. But there was something scary in M.A.'s eyes...

"Well..." Rebecca said timidly, although her face remained oddly impassive; it must have been a personality thing, for her to hide herself behind her stony expression, too. Maybe she was just excrutiatingly shy. "If he really does want my company, I could." The girl stole up to them quietly, her dainty feet barely making any sound. Tentatively, she patted the dog's head. Daemyn dutifully remained quiet; if he didn't, M.A. was about to step on his foot. His master was so demanding sometimes, he sniffed.

"Don't worry, he won't break," M.A. laughed a little, when the girl barely poked the back of his ears. She seemed a little shocked by the brunette's voice, but seeing that she meant kindly, listened with no hesitation. So Rebecca petted him a little bit more firmly, and as much as Daemyn hated to admit it, he kinda liked it. As a point to make against Mary-Anne for forcing him into these things, however, he commanded his tail to remain still. It flickered once or twice in pleasure, though, that disobedient tail of his.

Meanwhile...

Milton sighed grandly. "Only you, Diego. I can only show you this, my all-encompassing, diseased love, my passion eating my heart away like a cancer. The world would decry crudeness, but no, you see the art in my craft, don't you? Look how beautiful the nymph is! That pale skin, doe-like eyes... With such purity, of course her emotions will shine through like the stars in the country night sky. A perfect article of inspiration, and of adoration."

Diego tore his eyes away from the subject on the walls, unable to look at all those little hollows, all those little indentations of the flesh...

Milton continued, entranced by his own work, his own words. "No one else will love her as I have. I do. Even now, that small frame, only I can embrace her, only I can capture her in entirety on paper. Look! At her entreating, furtive glance. It's majestic. But alas, dear Diego... even I have tired of this subject. There is little else to explore; in fact, she's utterly useless now, her facial expressions have died, she is but a doll. It's a lovely contrast, actually, the presumed innocence of a child and the coldness in her, but even that cannot inspire more than one or two paintings. Diego, I am tired. I am weary. There is nothing left for me to paint. Nothing except --"

At this point in time, Diego had started creeping out. He had to warn Mary-Anne. This man was no longer who he used to be, he was --

"Where are you going, my dear friend?" Milton asked quietly, suddenly by his side, his hand clamped on the Smeargle's shoulder. "It can't be... that this girl has softened you to this extent? Must I remind you, of the pact we made, to search for ultimate beauty dispassionately, and at all costs? My friend," Milton said grandly, lifting the Smeargle up into his thin arms. There was surprising strength in them. "You have come back to me again. Don't disappoint me. Or... I just don't know what I will do," he said. Diego saw his eyes purposefully, menacingly, glide towards the sleeping Ulani on the couch, before resting warmly upon Diego once more. "I believe we have an understanding. See, I knew you'd understand me."
