Jake shifted Turtwig in his arms and nodded earnestly. "Yep, it arrived safely," he said. He was certain he'd never get Beth's wide-eyed-bush-baby stare out of his mind. He shook his head and looked back at Rowan. "I didn't know you handed out Trainer's Licenses," he added. "That girl was so happy to get it, she nearly took my nose off with her front door - twice." Turtwig snickered from his place in Jake's arms, and the blonde boy glared down at him. "You almost lost yours too," he scolded, but the Tiny Leaf Pokemon just laughed even harder. Jake grumbled and bopped Turtwig on the head, and as a result received a well-deserved chomping of his hand. The two were grinning all through their silly antics, though when they realized the Professor was still there they straightened up. "Uh, yeah. Anything else I can do for you?" Jake asked as Turtwig nuzzled and nibbled gently at his arm.

Riza was a little surprised to see that Shiro was actually running after her, as usually he just walked along behind her, keeping pace enough to not fall completely behind. Upon seeing this she slowed her pace so that she could take his non-bandaged hand in hers, and she smiled again, humming a quiet little melody as they made their way towards the Contest Hall. They arrived with plenty of time left before it closed for the night, and luckily enough the place was virtually empty, save for the receptionist seated behind the desk. Riza felt a rush of excitement surge through her and she let go of Crenu's hand before practically running up to the front desk. The receptionist looked up at the raven-haired girl with tired, almost bored eyes. "Here to register?" she asked, her tone as flat and tired as her expression.

"Yes we are," Riza answered quickly.

"All right. Is this your first contest?" she asked, eying them both in return, and Riza nodded. "....'kay. I need you to fill out these forms while I get your Contest Passes ready." She shoved two clip boards at them, each with a pen already attached. Riza took hers and filled it out quickly, her handwriting very neat and even. She read over it a second time to make sure there were no errors and she handed it back to the receptionist, who took it wordlessly. "Here, take these," she said, handing a small, rectangular box much like a badge case to either trainer. "Every coordinator receives a Ribbon Case upon registering," she droned on in her dull, sleepy voice while inputting Riza's information in the computer. "This'll only take a moment..."

"Could she be any more bored with her job?" Riza said with a quiet snicker, giving Crenu a gentle nudge with her elbow. The receptionist was too busy with the computer to notice.

Katie couldn't help but utter a small cheer when she saw Seraphim's attack connect, as it had been the first one they'd managed so far. She grinned back across the battlefield at Gardenia. "Thanks, you're pretty good yourself," she called, though it was hardly a fair enough comment. Gardenia's Cherrim was well-trained, that was very easy to see. For a moment she felt a little bad for that harsh attack it had just taken, but she quickly dismissed that thought. Thinking that way would allow Gardenia to crush her in a heartbeat.

"Okay Seraph, let's get some momentum going, here! Let's try your other new attack!" Seraphim nodded, her little smile never wavering even as she raised her blue rose high in the air, seemingly drawing power from every shadow in the room. A ghostly energy formed, causing all the petals of her body to dance and sway lightly. With a sharp little cry, the Roselia thrust her arms forward, sending the Shadow Ball spiraling towards her opponent.

Rowan listened to the kid explain what all had happened as he watched the Turtwig try to eat the boy. "Hmm, yes good job." While the boy was gone Rowan had come to a decision that if the boy did his job well, he would be getting a few gifts. Since he had accomplished his task Rowan felt he was worthy of them. Reaching into his pocket he pulled out two rectangle little machines and a scrap of paper. "Here, write your name on this and take these two things. Your my new out in the field researcher. Congratulations." Rowan actually did get a lot of requests for people to come help him on his research, he always refused them.

"Make sure you keep in touch kid. I want a report everyday." No he didn't want a report because he wanted to make sure the kid was ok. He wasn't going to be worried about some kid who couldn't even remember his name.

~~~~~~~
"Slowking? Well unlike Slowbro you need an item called Kings Rock, and you need to trade it while he is holding the item." Tony explained.
"Oso!" Robin cried as she jumped up full of determination. "Ok, so where do I get this Kings Rock!" Her whole body was full of excitement and determination.
"Well there are only two places where you can get such an item, and you just happen to be lucky enough to be close to one of them. You can buy one in Oreburg." Tony got up looking at Robin who looked like she was about to run off to go get one. "You can go get one but first change out of your training uniform. I don't want people knowing that I am accepting students again." Mostly because he considered himself retired and didn't want to be bugged by them. "Just because you are out of your uniform though does not mean you wont be training. Now hand over your pokeballs, the only pokemon you will be bringing with you is your Monferno and Totodile. Those two need the most work. Your Monferno is to defend you against wild pokemon and your Totodile will be running alongside with you to help build his strength back up."
"All right Master!" Robin cried as she quickly unhooked all of her pokeballs except for those two and handed them over to Tony. "I will be back soon! I still have a lot of training to do!" Robin grinned as she picked Black*Star up and put him back onto his feet. "There you go! Come on Black*Star!" With that said the two of them took off running and jumping excitedly as they headed over to the pokemon center so Robin could change again.
Somehow Turtwig managed to jump down to the floor safely as Rowan had shoved a bunch of things in the boy's hands. Jake stood there for a moment or two, gawking at them like an idiot, mostly because he had no idea what two of the three items for. He recognized the piece of paper, as it had the same design as the paper he'd delivered to Bush Baby Beth. "I don't understand," he said, looking around for Turtwig, as the Tiny Leaf Pokemon had disappeared. "Well, I think I kind of do, actually. But, what are these for?" he asked, holding up one device in each hand. The first was red and sleek and shiny and looked quite new, while the other was heavy, a little on the clunky side and looked as though it had been run over by a car and then haphazardly taped back together. "And what exactly is it that you want me to do?"
Sam matched Miharu's frown. "I didn't really want to be a Trainer either. In fact, I hated Pokemon since I was 10. I used to study them for hours on end when I was little, wanting to become the Champion. As soon as I turned 10, I went out to the ocean, and basically dragged a Staryu from the sea. I brought it to Chuck's Gym, and challenged him. The Staryu of course wouldn't listen to me, and as Chuck laughed at me, it escaped by using Rapid Spin and spraining my hand. Hurt like hell, mind you. After that, I was so upset and immature I didn't want to have anything to do with Pokemon. Then, my dad brought home a Pokemon egg. About a week or two ago, we went out on the ocean, sailing for some port to deliver goods. My dad's a jack-of-all-trades for Cianwood, so this was just a normal day. As we were sailing, we hit a storm. I hated the egg so much I threw it overboard. But I freaked out because I thought of the suffering Pokemon. My compassion got the best of me, and I jumped in after it. While I was clinging for dear life to that tiny egg, it hatched into Star. I fainted, but Star...she brought me to safety. She pulled both of us to Vermillion City, in Kanto. I didn't really have a choice then. I had to stick with Star to get back home." Sam shut up abruptly, realizing she had been rambling. She blushed, embarassed by her motor mouth, and still ashamed of what she had done to Star's egg.
After a bit of awkward silence, with the Pokemon Center coming into sight, Sam glanced sideways to her friend. "So you really like painting, huh? I'm more of a reader. Don't have an ounce of artistic ability." She fell silent once more, not really expecting an answer.
"I ain't a Gym Leader for nothing!" Gardenia laughed, stretching her arm towards the sky before lowering them, brushing her nose with the thumb of her right hand. She had to admit, this battle was pretty fun. It was pretty obvious that Cherrim was going down if she couldn't dodge this attack but she wouldn't leave this battle without landing another hit.
"Don't fight the paralysis!" Gardenia instructed, "You'll just seize up again! Relax and give that Roselia a taste of your Magical Leaf!"
Cherrim nodded, understanding that her time in this battle was nearing an end. Either way, she was going to give her opponent an attack that'd sting, even if it wasn't very effective! Cherrim didn't bother to watch as Katie's Roselia gathered the shadows from trees and bushes around the field. The shadows were plenty, but small thanks to the strong sun which happened to be weakening and would soon return to normal. In the time it took to charge up the Shadowball Cherrim was able to unleash a barrage of multicolored leaves. They shimmed and transformed colors like magic.
"Give it your best Cherrim!" Gardenia cheered as her Pokemon sent forth the leaves with as much force as she could. Cherrim stepped forward firmly with her right foot, throwing her arms forwards, sending the magical leaves at their target. She had to admit, it was one of the strongest Magical Leaf's ever. It zoomed around the Shadowball nearing their target with each passing second.
Roselia's attack had connected as neither Cherrim and Gardenia made a move to dodge the attack. It connected, simply, and Gardenia recalled her Cherrim before tucking the Pokeball back onto her belt. "You did good," she replied looking fondly at the Pokeball. The Eterna Gym Leader looked at the Roselia, to see what the outcome of the attack would be.
What did he want the kid to do? Wasn't that obvious? Did the kid need it spelled out for him? "Boy do you need me to draw pictures for you? You are my new field assistant. You are to go out and study pokemon and their behavior while I am here. I have a lot of work to do here and I can't go out in the field as much as I used to anymore." It certainly wasn't because he was getting old. "Those are a pokedex and a pokenavi. I shouldn't have to tell you this." Rowan grumped but he didn't really feel it to much, not that he would let the boy ever know that. Looking down at the boy Rowan looked down at his old pokenavi in the kids hands. It had gone through a lot, he hadn't been able to throw it away when he got his newfangled highly advanced pokenavi a few weeks ago, he still couldn't figure it out half of the time. "What else do I need to tell you? Make sure you don't get into to much trouble. Call me if you need anything and to report in each night." What else would it take to get this kid out the of the door?
Seraphim had been too preoccupied with charging up her Shadow Ball that she hadn't noticed the oncoming Magical Leaf until it was too late, not like she could have dodged it if she tried. She cried out from the stinging sensation of the leaves striking her body, and once the attack had finished she felt significantly weaker. Somehow she knew that attack shouldn't have hurt as much as it did, had she suffered a critical hit?
She didn't have a lot of time to dwell on it though, as the sound of Katie's cheering caught her attention. The Roselia looked around, noticing that her opponent had been recalled. Had that meant she'd won the first round? The Thorn Pokemon breathed a sigh of relief and gave a little bow. She was feeling very tired now and she knew it wouldn't take much more to bring her down, so she stood tall as she awaited Gardenia's next choice of Pokemon.
Rowan was only about halfway through his rant when Turtwig trotted back into the room, looking mighty pleased with himself. He rammed his head into Jake's shin to get the boy's attention, and when Jake glared down at him, he simply beamed back up at his new trainer, holding a pen firmly in his mouth. "Fiiiigh!" he cried, voice muffled by the object, and he let out a cheer of happiness when Jake took it. "Oh," the boy responded once Rowan had stopped yelling at him, and he stared at the pen as though it would somehow magically deflect the man's anger. He used the only flat side of the beat-up PokeNav as a makeshift writing surface and he quickly scrawled his chosen name in the area indicated - Jake Johnson - a little surprised that he still knew how to write as he handed the license to Rowan for inspection. But then again he could walk, talk, wash dishes and do other things, but all that just made it more frustrating that he couldn't recall his own name. He didn't actually know what a PokeDex or PokeNav were or what they were for, yet somehow he knew that if he were to ask Rowan about it, he'd receive another lecture. He nodded at the comment about not getting into trouble. "Right, report in," he repeated, not entirely sure how to go about writing/giving a report, but he figured it was something he'd learn over time. "I get it now," he lied, figuring it was better than making the professor even more angry, and after all he'd done for him too. "I appreciate all this, Professor," he said, tucking the two items into his pockets. "So uh, thank you, for everything. There is one more thing, though. Was there anywhere specific you wanted me to go? Any Pokemon in particular you wanted me to study?"
PostPosted: Tue Jul 27, 2010 9:25 pm
What to study? Waving his hands as if that was a minor detail, it was, Rowan read the boys trainers license. His name was Jake Johnson? That was a little plain but who was he to judge on a name, his last name was a tree. "Study what is interesting to you. If something doesn't interest you then you won't do it or you might miss something important." Handing back the trainers license Rowan stared down at the boy and the Turtwig that was next to him. "My number is in the pokenavi so make sure you call it." He wanted to make sure the kid called but he didn't want it to look like he was to worried for him. Still it felt good to have trainers actually thank him for his help, some of them were quite rude, it made Rowan wonder why he had volunteered to be the starting Professor for Sinnoh.
Watching the kid for a moment Rowan felt a small connection to the kid, it wasn't often that he met someone he liked. It wasn't often that he helped someone like this either. "Good luck out there to kid. Your going to need it. Figure out who you used to be or not it doesn't matter as long as you are happy with your life." He felt a little odd giving out such light advice but he felt like it was an important thing to tell the boy.
"Leader Gardenia's Pokemon is unable to continue! The first round goes to the challenger!" Suki the judge announced, holding a white flag up on Gardenia's side to signify the loss.
"All right, this next guy's a bit young but he's a tough one!" Gardenia smiled before throwing the white and red sphere forward. In a flash of bright light a Turtwig emerged, raring and ready to battle. Truth be told this Turtwig was the baby of her original Turtwig who was now a big, strong Torterra. Needless to say, her son was strong and determined. He'd proven himself to be one of Gardenia's toughest Gym Pokemon.
"Take down that Roselia with a Bite!" Gardenia commanded. She could tell that the Pokemon was fairly tired and one tough attack may be enough to knock it out. Turtwig launched himself into action, dashing to the Thorn Pokemon with his beak-like jaw open wide.
PostPosted: Tue Jul 27, 2010 9:49 pm
Turtwig stood up straight and tall at his new trainer's side as though to show that he was going to do his best to take care of Jake and help in any way he could think of to recover the boy's lost memories. Turtwig didn't know who Jake was before he'd become 'Jake', but he'd stick by his side no matter what. Jake, meanwhile, was listening intently to the professor as he spoke. Studying things that interested him seemed like common sense, though it was what Rowan had said last that had really stuck with him: Figure out who you used to be, or not; it doesn't matter as long as you're happy with your life. Sure, Rowan was a bit of a grouch but he definitely knew what he was talking about. That, and it was somewhat reassuring to know that someone was on his side, even if it was grumpy old Professor Rowan. Jake thanked the man once more before he and Turtwig set off again, this time making their way east through Sandgem. One thing he knew for sure was that he'd have to invest in some better footwear as soon as he had some money, as the wooden sandals on his feet wouldn't last forever, nor were they really meant for extended periods of travel.
The duo had planned on making their way north to Route 202, though no sooner had they gone past the Pokemon Center (where Jake had stopped to give Turtwig a much-deserved round of healing) did the sandal on his left foot decide to break, and in such a manner that it sent the poor boy tumbling to the ground. Luckily Turtwig was still confined to his Pokeball otherwise he might have died laughing at his trainer's bad luck, though as Jake was getting to his feet, he noticed a bit of money lying on the ground just inches from where his nose had been. Perhaps that fall hadn't been entirely bad luck after all, though above the knee of his cutoff jeans had a lengthy vertical tear that would probably make the ladies avert their eyes from him, blushing and giggling.
A short time after that, Jake had come upon a small thrift shop and he'd managed to purchase a pair of white cargo pants (used, but in good condition, and what could one buy with a only measly $400 to their name?) as well as a cheap pair of shoes. The clerk had been nice enough to throw in a pair of new socks for him as well, leaving Jake with enough money to buy a single Pokeball, which he did with the clerk's insistence. He was halfway out the door, his aviator jacket slung over his shoulder as it still needed a wash when the clerk's cute strawberry-blonde daughter caught up with him and handed him a small vial of medicine - a Potion - though before Jake could thank her she'd gone back inside, and he figured that she probably wasn't supposed to give that to him. He set off towards Route 202 once again, this time feeling slightly more prepared than he had before.
Miharu cringed a little as she listened to Sam's story. She'd mentioned something about taking on Chuck before, but now that she knew the whole story she felt a little bad. That also could explain Star's bad attitude, she thought, though she would never say that out loud. For a while the two trainers walked in awkward silence, both probably contemplating the other's stories. "Yeah, painting helps to calm my mind," she said idly, suddenly very much missing her craft. She hadn't really the means or opportunity to really sit down and just paint, as her life as a trainer kept her quite busy. Interestingly enough, though, Miharu wasn't much of a reader and could probably count the number books she'd read on one hand.
Miharu allowed Sam to enter the Pokemon Center first, as Sparkle hadn't really been injured in that last battle. The Flaaffy was still looking quite pleased with herself, though once they were inside the Center she practically clung to Miharu's leg, as she never had been all that good with crowds. "Well, at least it's not overly busy in here," she commented while gently petting Sparkle's head to try and calm her.
The next morning, M.A. stumbled down to the common room of the lighthouse to see this note -
"Mornin' Rosemary -
Will be doing maintenance with the lights. Grab some breakfast from the kitchenette (sorry don't got nothing fancier than marmalade and toast, hope you got something for the Pokemon 'cause Pelipper hoardes her own food somewhere hidden), be back in a jiffy to give you instructions to the trail.
- Old Man Rivers"
Mary-Anne chuckled a little bit; the retired captain had called her Rosemary all last night too, but she didn't interject to correct him as 1) Rosemary was somewhat close to her actual name, and 2) he didn't seem the kind too inclined to talk, and so she didn't want to disrupt his flow preemptively. But anyways, she did as she was told and went to the fridge. It was large and obviously older in style, but had very little in it; there was the marmalade he spoke of, some butter, a package of cheese, cold cuts, and mustard. Spoke volumes about the man's daily diet, but M.A. wasn't going to complain about the hospitality of the Ole Lighthouse Inn.
She fed her Pokemon first, allowing Tora and Daemyn to run outside to wrestle under the sunlight of the warm morning sun. The sphere of light seemed like it was twinkling today in the nearly completely clear skies, as if apologetic for the storm the night before; M.A. felt like it'd be a good day today. Meanwhile, she strolled about the common room, looking at the trinkets she hadn't looked over yesterday while munching on her toast, Ulani the Swablu nestling comfortably on her head. (Truth be told, for those inquiring as to why she hasn't involved, it must be for the fact that she rather liked how perfectly she fit on her trainer's head, while at this size.)
It was eerily quiet save for the sounds of the distant waves, so M.A. made sure to make some noise by humming. There were a lot of picture frames, especially of this one girl whose steely blue eyes mirrored Mary-Anne's in each, as if she looked into the camera lens to pierce into the eye of the beholder. Here was a porcelain Pelipper or two, some odd metal contraptions that moved when they were touched. M.A. glided about the room until she came back to the kitchenette. On the table where she had prepared her toast, there was a newspaper lying there, though it was about two months old. Looked like he had been reading it, though. In the corner of the little kitchen, she saw another small mound of newspapers atop a little stool. These were all outdated, too. She flipped through them backwards until she found the oldest one to date. A year ago. The boating accident wasn't even on the front page, it was on the third, tucked between real estate advertisements and a quick weather report. M.A. glimpsed through it, noted the fatality report, as well as names of the survivors. Her eyes widened noticeably upon tripping on some new nugget of information that she would not have guessed.
Well, in any case, Diego's master's name was Milton Stephanides.
"How can you be a trainer, yet know none of your Pokemon's moves?" Roy asked, in an almost accusatory tone.
"Frankly, I'm not a trainer. I'm a beautician," Jun relented, continuing when he saw the confusion in his fellow man's eyes. "I'm training my team, here, to take on a Gym Leader. You might find this as mildly subversive to the trainers' lifestyle and morals, but we're doing this for the cash."
Roy took this in quietly. "To all their own," he shrugged, regarding the subversive comment. "But you ain't gonna take anyone on without knowing what your Pokemon can do, first. Here, actually, why don't you take my old PokeDex? It's a little outdated, but it's better than nothing," Roy offered, handing over a slightly scuffed device.
"You sure? I mean..." Jun started, surprised by his generosity.
"Yeah, it's junk to me," the man shrugged nonchalantly. "But yeah, you're gonna want to have your Pokemon figure out their attacks before they go into battle. Some are status afflictions, like much of your Roselia's attacks," he said, pointing at the PokeDex's screen, "and some do direct damage. There's also a list of TMs you can teach 'em."
Jun nodded. Back in his Veilstone dojo days, he used to be in charge of grabbing his dad's challenger's awards. Drain Punch, it had been, right? And money... Oh money, how Jun missed you so.
"Well, let's still have a mock-battle, hm? We'll keep the pace slow, so you can try out your moves. According to the Dex, your Pokemon are at a lower level than mine, and so you can try more of your moves on 'em and I'll take it easy."
Part of Jun's man-pride ruffled at this pity, but he realized that this really would be for the best, and it wasn't often that you found someone so willing to help a complete stranger. "Alright. Thanks /so/ much for all this." Jun wanted to grab his shoulder in a show of thanks, but figuring that could be misconstrued, kept his hands to himself.
"Yeah yeah, no big, I'm not in a rush," Roy said, stepping back a bit to prepare the mock battle. This time, he released a Purugly. Ew, Jun thought. Thing needed to lose some weight. But ah, well.
"Demi, let's see what you can do first!" Jun announced, since the Jynx's data was on the Pokedex first.
Crenu didn't expect Riza to slow her pace and grab his hand suddenly, but he just smirked a bit. Honestly should have expected it by now. He was content to listen to her melody as they made their way to the contest hall, it was soothing and nice, just hearing it made his arm and hand hurt less, as impossible as that was. When they finally did arrive at the contest hall Crenu was relieved to find that the registration was still open. It would have been a big waste and a hassle if they had missed a deadline, in fact coming to enter so last minuet was risky in the first place. Ken should have said something a lot sooner than he did that's for sure. Speaking of...where was Ken? HE and Riza's brother disappeared around the same time, though Ken never said he was leaving. Not that Crenu minded of course, it was great to have that bothersome guy out of the picture, but it still rose some curiosity. Now that the contest drew near Crenu got an unpleasant chill, he was almost certain that the shiny caped man would pop up any moment now. He pushed the thought from his mind for now and focused instead on the receptionist, who could have been a machine for all he knew. Such a monotone voice, the bored look on her face, he could tell she just wanted to go home. Crenu said nothing seeing as Riza took it upon herself to answer all the questions for the both of them, which was fine with him since he didn't like talking much anyway, and just nodded. When she presented them with the clipboards Crenu took his and read it over a few times, making sure he didn't miss any of the details before filling it out. Crenu filled it out in cursive, it was just the way he wrote, and handed it back to her. He didn't really expect much from her, but the receptionists silence was a little unsettling, he swore he could hear the gears turning in the clock on the wall. When she handed them what looked like a badge case Crenu didn't pick it up at first, he wasn't really interested in displaying his prizes. Hell, he kept his badges in his pocket jumbling around like loose change, they were pretty much worthless to him. What he cared about was the challenge itself, the proof of victory one received afterwords meant as much to him as materials they were made of. But since ribbons were probably a little more delicate and since it was right here in front of him, he decided to take it. When Riza nudged him about the receptionist he simply nodded. "Who wouldn't be? She's probably been behind that computer all day." He replied softly.
